Elections Committee • 2011 Review & 2012 Concerns

To have any hope of preventing approval of the revised billboard ordinance we will need to turn people out in

force for the two Council meetings in August where Council will vote on the ordinance. All meetings will be held in Council chambers at City Hall.

1. Thursday, August 4th, 9:00 AM - first reading and public comment

2. Thursday, August 18th, 6:00 PM - reading, public comment, vote.

The web site at Scenic St. Petersburg has been updated with an email campaign that residents can use to email the Council. The Land Development and Historic Resources Committee asks that each resident use this link to send their thoughts on this issue to the Council, and pass on the link to anyone you know who might be interested in commenting. Every email counts. http://scenicstpete.org/take-action

On Sept 24th the city is once again offering to help with community projects to beautify the neighborhoods or

to help residents in need. We are looking for as many volunteers as we can get to help an elderly resident on 84th Ave N with some yard cleanup and some landscaping.

You can either join us at 7am for check-in and light refreshments at Lake Vista Park, 1401 62nd Ave. S where we’ll pick up the supplies, or you can join us at

the 84th Ave N address around 8am when we get back, where we hope to have everything done by 12 noon at the latest. (pls call or email Prez Dave for specific address) Either way you want to help, everybody that participates  is

also invited back to Lake Vista Park afterwards for cold drinks, lunch and entertainment until 2pm.

We are also looking for people who maybe own a nursery, landscaping, painting or home repair company that would be interested in donating your time and expertise or some supplies.  Also if you can’t physically help out, but would like to offer some plants or supplies, any donations will be accepted.

I promise you that you will feel so much better when you see what we accomplish for this needy family by coming together when they need us.

National Night Out is a very special event, held each

year, to recognize the partnership between our residents and law enforcement throughout the country.  It is a very big way to bring our communities together to show our support for the St. Petersburg Police Department and the vital role we play in helping prevent and control crime in our neighborhoods.

This year, the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood is sponsoring the National Night Out event for all communities within District Two. Because your association resides in District Two, we wanted to make sure that you were aware of the event, to be held Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at North Shore Park between 5pm and 8pm and extend a warm invitation for all of your residents to join in this celebration. Here is a snap shot of event activities:

Music and entertainment, Food, Games and activities for all youth, Educational programs and material about crime

prevention, Demonstrations by the St. Petersburg Police Department and Fire and Rescue and Prizes.

Most of all, it will be fun for the entire family and a way to celebrate the very  important partnership we have with the City of St. Petersburg. This is a great opportunity to meet with our community service and crime

prevention officers and have fun.Feel free to wear association or crime watch T-shirts.Our National Night Out Chair for District Two is Judi

Reed so if you have any questions or ways our neighborhood would like to contribute to the event, please contact her at [email protected].

Hope to see you on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 from 5pm – 8pm at North Shore Park on the corner of 11th Ave and North Shore Drive NE.

Council Member Kennedy’s CornerThank you for allowing me the opportunity to contribute to your monthly newsletter. In this month’s issue, I would like to update you regarding the following:

North Bay TrailThe North Bay Trail through the beautiful waterfront

parks was completed in November 2010, just in time for the Centennial Parks celebrations. The wide concrete path now carries over 1,000 users a day who enjoy all that our spectacular waterfront has to offer. The North Bay Trail continues to the north beyond Coffee Pot Park along the east side of lst Street Northeast. This section from 30th Avenue NE to 78th Avenue NE is currently under construction and will be open for full use in late Fall. North of 78th Avenue North, the Trail merges with the Rio Vista Trail and continues to 83rd Avenue. As a part of the project from 30th Avenue to 78th Avenue, the bridge deck connection to the Rio Vista Trail will also be replaced with a composite material to provide better traction for trail users. We expect that by the end of the year a continuous Recreational Trail will exist from 83rd Avenue North to the Downtown providing an opportunity for residents in the areas of this Trail to walk, jog or bicycle anywhere along the route or to our waterfront parks and downtown.

Rio Vista ParkThe City of St. Petersburg is in the process of doing our

due diligence to acquire the former Rio Vista Elementary School, located at 8131 Macoma Drive Northeast. A public meeting will be scheduled before the demolition of the buildings to provide any additional thoughts and/or ideas. Your support of this initiative made the difference and I will continue to keep you updated as new developments occur.

FY12 BudgetThe Mayor has provided his recommendations for the

Fiscal Year 2012 Budget. If you were unable to attend one of the three Budget Summits, you will have one more opportunity to convey your ideas, interest and concerns at the following Budget Public Hearings:

• Thursday, September 8, 2011 at City Hall, Council Chambers, 175 - 5th St. No.- 6:00 pm

• Thursday, September 22, 2011 at City Hall, Council Chambers, 175 - 5th St. No.- 6:00 pm

It is indeed an honor to serve as your Council representative. If I can be of assistance, please feel free to call my office at (727) 893-7117.

We had another great time entering another float/decorated boat in the “All Children’s Hospital”

parade. The pictures aren’t in color, but we did a very patriotic red, white and blue theme for this parade. We threw a lot of “free” beads again, thanks to yet another

All Children’sHospital Parade

very generous contribution from Toni Michalove. I’m really surprised we don’t get more of the neighborhood

Page 7: RBCA News #4 July/August, 2011

interested in joining us in these parades. Ask anybody that’s been there, we’ve had a total blast in all 3 of the parades we’ve been in.

We want to thank Jimmy and Cathy Shelton for allowing us to borrow their boat & trailer, and Thanks also to Mark O’Brien for towing it that day. We put Prez Dave in the very tall crows-nest and almost knocked him out of it with every traffic light and a few low hanging tree branches.

RBCA “Adoption”Of 83rd Ave

As you know, in 2010 the RBCA in conjunction with Keep Pinellas

Beautiful, we “adopted” the one mile stretch of 83rd Avenue N east of 4th Street N to the San Martin Bridge. We need to schedule a few more cleanups this year. Each cleanup only takes about an hour or two depending on how many volunteers we get.

The next date is set for Sat, Aug 13th from 9am to 10am. Meet at 83rd Ave N and Macoma Drive in the Rio

Vista school parking lot. Please call Donna Hoover at 727-

579-3644 or e-mail at [email protected] to volunteer or for more details. We will provide gloves, pickers, trash bags, and water. Please join us if you can and show your pride in your neighborhood.

A great source of information from Pinellas County is now available

in a monthly newsletter sent via e-

County ConnectionE-News

mail at www.pinellascounty.org/emergency/subscribe.htm  This months newsletter has a wealth of

information concerning our upcoming hurricane season from emergency phone numbers, checklist, family plan, is your home ready, storm history, preparing to survive, etc.  Well worth checking out before the storms arrive.

What are we going to do? Our best helpers are moving to another county. Guy, Cyndy, Justin and Austin Glynn have always been the first to arrive to help and the last to leave at most of our meetings and events, they have carried our RBCA banner in all our parades, delivered newsletters wherever they were needed, always helped

whenever asked, and sold the Christmas Eve luminaries for many, many years, and they will definitely be missed by everybody in the neighborhood. We may as well disband the association right now. Life as we all know it has ceased to exist. Glynn family, please know that your service was very much appreciated and you guys are always welcome to come back and join us at any of our future functions because you have definitely earned a lifetime RBCA membership.

SAD DAY IN WHO-VILLE

Since the Glynn family has moved, we need at least one person (preferably two people to share about 100 deliveries) and an alternate to step up ASAP to deliver newsletters to all the houses north of the 2nd St. hump bridge.

Please contact Prez Dave ASAP if you are interested in checking it out before you commit.

Condolences...Long time Sunlit Cove resident Bob Mapp has passed away. If you don’t recognize the name, Bob used to be a pretty regular sight in the area riding

his bike with his long white hair flowing behind him while his daughter Nancy rollerbladed beside him. I had many occasions to interact with this man and he was one of the nicest men I have ever met. He will be missed and our thoughts and our prayers go out to his family. A memorial is being planned as I

write this, so please contact Nancy

ENERGY NEWS - If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.
