“It’s Another Great Day in Riviera Bay!”55th YEAR • MARCH/APRIL, 2015 ISSUE www.rbcanews.

L ike Mr. Rogers always said, “It’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood.” It seems like we have new

people moving into the neighborhood and joining the association every day. At our last meeting we had four residents volunteer to become new board members and possible association officers. (Must be the great president, LOL.)

I’m telling ya, the weather right now is why we all live in Florida!! Not real hot during the day and cool enough to leave your windows open at night...ah, perfecto mundo. SPRINGYARD SALEFOLLOW-UP

We didn’t hear one complaint and

talked to a lot of residents that did very well at this past yard sale. We saw a lot of dealers/thrift store people in the area on Friday looking to buy things cheap to resell them at a profit later, but a lot of people managed to clean out their treasures.

Saturday started off cold and rainy, but cleared up to become a nice selling day with a lot of traffic.

Sunday seemed a bit light. Suggestions have been made again to only have the sale on Saturday. Let us know what you think about that.

Once again after the maps were made and the signs were placed, we got calls wanting to know why their street didn’t get the big signs. We aren’t going to di-rect yard sale traffic down a road where there aren’t any sales that we know of, so please call to get on the map for our Fall Yard sale to make sure we mark your street.

Easter Egg Hunt & Ice Cream Social April 2Check Website and Facebook for Date, Time and Location)

The Easter Bunny will be hiding plenty of goody filled eggs for us again this

year and all you need to bring to join the hunt is your own Easter basket or something to collect your eggs in. The number of eggs you get to collect will depend on the number of kids that will be hunting, AND, you get to keep the Bunny ears we give you.

The Hunt will be followed again this year by our Ice Cream social. The RBCA will provide all the fix’ins so all ya gotta do is have a sweet tooth.

All we require is you be a RBCA member to participate, so if you aren’t already a member, pay the $10/family yearly dues that night or you can mail in $10 to 163 87th Ave. N., St Petersburg, FL 33702 before that night.

This year we will be holding this event at the Riviera Bay Park Big Pavilion in the back on Thursday April 2nd Easter Egg Hunt to start at 6 with Ice Cream Social to follow the hunt. This event is not just for kids, come join us for the ice cream social. Come meet your neighbors. The park is located east of 4th St on 83rdAve to south on Macoma Drive NE to 8131 on left.

RBCA NEIGHBORHOOD/CANAL CLEAN UPSat, April 11 – 8:30 am To Noon

Sunlit Cove Drive NE Boat Ramp(East off of 4th St N onto 89th Ave N, bear right onto

Sunlit Cove Dr NE to ramp between 228 & 236)

We need as many volunteers as possible to meet at the boat

ramp to sign in, pick up supplies, and pick a location to clean. FREE BREAKFAST FOOD, COFFEE and DONUTS will be supplied to get the day off to a great start and LUNCH will be provided to end the event around Noon. We will provide gloves, trash bags, pickers, dumpsters, and everything needed for a very productive day. Just bring along a desire to help the neighborhood become a better place for everybody to live. Boy Scout, Girl Scout troops and Youth Groups are welcome. Great for high school community service hours! We don’t just clean the waterways, we clean the entire neighborhood as well.

Anyone with a boat or truck is especially encouraged to help pickup collected trash and debris. I will have a trailer there for larger items. We can use anybody that shows up.

NEED VOLUNTEERS TO:• Help set up and tear down

location tents.• Help to pickup breakfast food

before 8:30am and lunch food• Help to check-in people, check

out supplies.

• Clean waterways of debris and bring it back to the dumpsters at ramp.

• Clean land areas along 4th St N between 98th and 78th Ave N, If

needed, trash bags can be left at locations for trailer pickup later.

• Clean 83rd Ave from 4th Street to San Martin Bridge as our Adopt-A-Mile clean-up.”

• Clean around the 83rd Ave/San Martin bridge.

• Help separate recyclable materials from trash. Everything is weighed for a report back to the city and to Keep Pinellas Beautiful.

• Attaching “Drains to Bay” signs on storm drains.

PLEASE NOTE: After Saturday at noon, Riviera Bay residents are welcome to use the dumpsters at the boat ramp to discard anything except hazardous materials, paints,

etc. (I will try to arrange a hazardous material drop off at a later date somewhere) All we ask is that you place metal materials to the side or end of the dumpsters for recycling so it doesn’t go to the landfill.

Page 6: Rbca news March/April 2015

6 RBCA

• Never dump anything down the storm drains• Sweep up driveways, sidewalks and roads• Don’t blow leaves into the street or storm drains• Wash your car on the lawn instead of roads and driveways• Check your car for leaks and dispose of waste oil properly• Pick up after your pets• Use fertilizers and pesticides sparingly• Do not throw cigarette butts on the ground

Unfortunately, litter in our waterways and on our beaches lasts a long time, often years. Litter, especially plastics, takes many decades to several hundred years to break down, thereby threatening wildlife and public health for generations. Consider how long it takes for items commonly found in our waterways to breakdown:• Cardboard box, 2 weeks• Orange peel, 2-5 weeks• Banana Peel, 2-5 weeks

KEEP TAMPA BAY BLUEOur canals and bays are a part of St. Petersburg for all to enjoy. By doing our

part to minimize our impact, they will remain healthy and productive.Help Keep Our Bays and Waters Clean!

• Newspaper, 6 weeks• Apple core, 2 months• Wool sock, 1-5 years• Cigarette filter, 1-5 years• Plastic bag, 10-20 years• Tin can, 50 years• Foam plastic cup, 50 years• Aluminum can, 80-200 years• Disposable diaper, 450 years• Plastic bottle, 450 years• Fishing line, 500 years• Glass, I million years• Rubber tire, infinity

As you can see, the natural items take a shorter time to decompose, and the manmade items (often the more pervasive and abundant) take much longer.

• Recycle Your Old BatteriesDon’t just throw your old batteries in the trash to end up in our landfills. We will have a collection bucket at each RBCA General Meeting to collect old batteries for recycling.

RBCA CAR & MotoRCyCLE

Showby Gary west

The focus of this article is to gauge interest in a RBCA car

and motorcycle show both from a participant and spectator point of view. Many of us have cars and motorcycles in which we take great pride, have restored/have kept in pristine shape and enjoy driving, riding and showing.

Prez Dave & I have discussed this topic on occasion. With the new park completed and a long road next to the entire park area we think this would be an excellent location for a neighborhood car show (usually called a Show and Shine or a Cars and Coffee). No prizes, no admission, no classes, just show up and enjoy.

If you’re reading this and we have piqued your interest as either an entrant or spectator, PLEASE let me know. E-mail me at:

[email protected] Details will follow pending

e-mail results. If any of you need further prodding, I can tell you that there are some VERY interesting internal combustion powered things hidden away around here that will be glad to reveal themselves to an appreciative audience.

I want to Thank RBCA residents Jill & Gary West, Denise & Chris Rodgers, Sean, Amy & Erin Singh,

Lynne & Stephanie Boyle, Randi Langas & also Judy Cannon from the Riviera Bay Home Owners neighborhood who came out and helped us with our 1st 2015 Adopt-A-Mile Clean-up. We collected 31 lbs. of trash and recycled 6.2 lbs. of plastic, 3.8 lbs. of metal, 2.6 lbs. of glass, leaving only 18.4 lbs. of trash thrown away. We were able to report 19 Volunteer Hours to “Keep Pinellas Beautiful” and the City of St Pete.

Please mark your calendars for the remaining 2015 dates, April 11 (meet at boat ramp for cleanup details), Aug 8, and Nov 14. We meet at the St. Pete Presbyterian Church southwest corner of the parking lot at 9 AM. The RBCA will provide the trash bags, pickers, gloves and water. Depending on

the number of volunteers, we can normally do this in less than an hour, depending on how you are about cigarette butts. (Unfortunately, there are lots)

Please mark your calendars now and come join us for a little exercise and help us keep your neighborhood beautiful. Even if you can’t join us on 83rd Ave — and a lot of people already do this — please take a trash bag with you if you walk the neighborhood and pick-up the trash you come across. If we all do a little, we can accomplish a lot.

RIVIERA BAy PARK CoMMUNIty GARDEN

By Donna hoover

I’d really like to Thank Brenda & Leah Padot for spending a few hours weeding our Community

Garden on 2 separate occasions prior to our scheduled Feb 28th Garden day. Dave and I were joined by

Toni Michalove, Gary & Jill West, Pete, Lynne and Stephanie Boyle on what started out to be an overcast morning. We were able to get 1.5 hours in before the rain started, and we were able to move a lot of mulch and deadhead the majority of the roses in the garden. Dave and I returned on March 6th and put in another

2 hours to get the garden ready for spring. All together we reported 24 volunteer hours to the City.

Please mark your calendars for May 16, Aug 22, and Sept 26 to come out and help us. We also need to keep a record of volunteer hours for the City, so please let me know if you have worked in the garden and for how long you worked.

If you have plants you would like to donate to the garden, we are looking for ones that attract birds and butterflies, without taking over the garden.

Please email or call me if you can help. Donna Hoover at 727-579-3644 or [email protected]

It took us a long time and a lot of effort by a lot of

people to have our beautiful Riviera Bay Park installed, not to mention our $1,000 donation and commitment to our community garden, and I’m sure that any local neighborhood resident now considers it the gem of the community, so I’m sure they pick up after themselves and their dogs whenever necessary, and leave the park looking as pristine as possible when they leave. We can only hope that it’s the “out-of-towners” or other visitors that don’t pick up the “debris” and dispose of their cigarette butts properly. While I’ve worked in the garden, I’ve seen multiple walkers pass by trash on the ground multiple times as they walk around the park. People, it doesn’t have to be your trash to pick it up. Please don’t let your dog run loose around the park and maybe leave “deposits” to be stepped on. Please treat this park or any area like it was your own, because you as a taxpayer paid for that park. Take pride in your park and always leave it cleaner than when you entered it.

NEIGhBoRhooD EtIQUEttE

Please be considerate of other people’s property. During the yard sale weekend, I noticed several

signs posted asking people to clean up after your dog. This also goes for some of the common areas around the canals. If you’re going to walk your dog in to someone else’s yard to do their business, please be considerate enough to remove it and dispose of it properly in your own trash can.

I also need to comment on grass clippings being blown into the streets to later get washed into the canals. This hurts marine life as it decomposes by depleting the oxygen in the water and eventually ends up on the bottom of our canals. It also hurts your neighbors at the end of the drainage. They are the ones who end up having to pay to get the city to dredge the canals behind their property. Grass clippings should be mulched back into your yard as free fertilizer or disposed of in your trash can. Excess fruit and dog waste should also be disposed of in your trash can. Tree branches and hedge trimmings can be recycled at the 62nd Ave Recycle area or disposed of in your trash can also.
