53rd YEAR • JANUARY/FEBRUARY, 2013 ISSUE www.rbcanews.com

Donna & I had an absolutely wonderful

holiday visit up north with both families and we wouldn’t have missed it for the world, but we were both very glad to get back home to Riviera Bay, still the Bestest Place Ever. We returned from the frozen tundra with everybody in both families still talking to each other, so it was also a successful trip….this time.

We weren’t here, but we heard that the boat parade and candle luminaries were great again this year, and we also got a few phone calls and e-mails concerning New Year’s Eve fireworks in the neighborhood. (see “Neighborhood Concerns” article inside)

2013 is shaping up to be another fantastic year for our neighborhood and I just can’t wait to welcome

all the volunteers that want to help us make it an even better-er place for your entire family.

If you have an idea for an event or an idea to improve your quality of life here in Riviera Bay, or want to offer your help, shoot me an email, give

me a call, or attend one of our general meetings, and I’ll try my best to get back to you asap.

Like my brother used to say, “Nobody can do everything, but everybody can do something, even if it’s just to serve as a bad example like you do.”

I hope to see you on Thurs, Feb 21th for great pizza from Paisano’s....oh, and I guess we’ll work in some neighborhood business when we get a chance.

The following is the current and forecasted status of the Rio

Vista Elementary School park proj-ect. The award of the demolition contract was approved to Samsula Inc. last October. A pre-demolition meeting was held on December 13th and the Notice to Proceed to commence with demolition was is-sued for Monday, January 7th. The contractor is required to give the County a ten day notice for inspec-tion prior to commencement of the demolition, therefore work may not begin until the following week. In the meantime, the contractor has installed tree protection and City forces have begun disassembling the old playground.

Illustrated here is a plan showing the revisions to the concept result-ing from the last public input meet-ing. As you can see the basketball court moved westward and is now located next to the tennis courts. Also, we are designing an area west of the original 1926 school build-ing to locate a historic marker de-picting the old school. We are also planning on keeping portions of the western most building corners as mementoes to the old building.

We anticipate the demolition to be completed by early March. The construction plans for the new park improvements are expected to be complete by end of February. We anticipate completing the permit-ting, bid solicitation and award of the construction contract for the new park by late Spring and start construction on the new park by early Summer. The City will han-dle the procurement of the play equipment, the picnic shelters and the fitness equipment. If all goes

RBCA SPRING YARD SALEFri, March 1st Thru Sun, March 3rd

Deadline To Have Your Location On MapIs Mon, Feb 25th

It’s time once again to trade your unused stuff taking up

your space for somebody else’s unused stuff that takes up even more of your space.

To have your location marked on the 500+ maps we distribute and have your street marked with a sign on 4th St and/or 83rd Ave, either email Donna Hoover at [email protected] or call 579-3644 before Feb 25th and leave your name, contact number and address of sale, and since RBCA funds are being spent to advertise & print, you must be a current RBCA member to get marked on the map. Membership is only $10 per household and runs from Jan-Dec. A convenient membership form is

printed on the back page of this newsletter for you to mail in with your $10 check, made out to the RBCA.

We advertise all 3 days, 8 am-2 pm in the Tampa Bay Times, St Pete Patch, The Flyer and our Face book

page, but you are welcome to set your own days and hours for that weekend. If we get rained on 2 out of the 3 days we will put the signs out for the following weekend, but we won’t have time for the advertising. We also have a few smaller signs that we can place inside the neighborhood if we have time, but all other signage directing people to your location is up to you. Be a good neighbor and remove

any signs that you have posted when your sale is fin-ished. We will pick-up all of the RBCA signs by Sun night, and remember, junk is something you’ve kept for years and throw away three weeks before you need it.

CHRISTMAS EVE BOAT PARADEBeautiful Night! Beautiful Parade!

Page 7: RBCA News 01-02-2013

We had a little rain early on, on Christmas Eve but by the time we put the candles out it had cleared.

They looked beautiful. We drove through the neighbor-hood and enjoyed then throughout. The decorations were beautiful also. We ran into a few traffic jams where there were parties and other gawkers. Our candle distributors did a wonder-ful job again and we thank our new recruits for volunteering. Delivering candles is not an easy job and very time consuming. Please thank them for their hard work when you see them in the neighborhood. With all this nice stuff, we do have a small avenue off 4th st. on the naughty list and your distributor will no longer be going on your street. Slamming doors and making rude com-ments are just unacceptable.

Our thanks and appreciation go out to all our distrib-utors: Marc & Carrie Plotnick, Nancy Haines, Heather

Green and her helpers, Terri Hammer, Debby & Lance Obst, Sheryl & Mathew Spencers, Karen Smith, Kenny Turcotte, Kim Triplette, Sandy Mitchell, Mark & Julie O’Brien, Wayne & Ingrid Busselle, Denise Spornraft &

Diane Croft, Mike & Mary Reed, Don Steer, Judy Can-non, Susa Hanks, and our (5) New Volunteers this year - Kathy Crow, Sean & Sarah, Dave & Bill.

I received a few calls and emails concerning the neigh-borhood fireworks on New Year’s Eve, so I called

around the neighborhood to get a general consensus. Some people were very positive, that “They were great this year,” and some were very negative, “They went until 4 am and I couldn’t sleep.” I would like to take this opportunity to remind every resident that your associa-tion cannot and does not “regulate” any of our residents. All I can do is put an article in the newsletter if we have the space available, and say, “Please be considerate of your neighbor” or “Do onto others as you would have them do unto you”.

My first suggestion on any complaint (not just fire-works) is to just try to talk to your neighbor or the household that you have an issue with and let them

know your concerns. Nine out of ten times they may not have realized they were causing a problem and are willing to change, compromise or correct the issue. If that doesn’t work or isn’t possible, call the non-emer-gency police number or contact the Codes Dept if it is a codes issue, and they can follow up with you person-ally if they have any questions or need further info, All pertinent info is on the back of this newsletter or can be found at www.stpete.org

Just as an example, some of the other issues we get calls on that should go to the Police and/or Codes dept: speeding, yard parking/multiple cars parked at one resi-dence, barking dogs, people not picking up after their dogs, people throwing anything in the canals, yard maintenance, seawall repair, mangrove removal, etc.

I urge every resident to just try to talk to the offender first about your concern, but if that isn’t possible:

(from city website):

To keep St. Petersburg a great place to live, learn, work and play, report violations through the city’s web-site using www.actiononline.stpete.org/ This online service allows you to report violations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your report is forwarded electronically to a Codes Technician who opens a case in their tracking database.

Please note that when the status of an Action On-line complaint is “Closed”, if a property address was provided and the complaint is within the jurisdiction of the department, a Codes case number is provided in

Codes Compliance Assistancethe response. Use the Codes case number to Search the Codes database for case progress from this web site.

Call Codes at (727) 893-7373 to report a violation. Send a Fax (727) 892-5558.

You can also call our area Codes inspector, Thad-deus (Thad) Mitchell at 551-3171 or send in your com-plaint by mail:

I ’m sure you saw the “Lost Dog” flyers all over the

neighborhood and I’m glad to say the dog has been found so if you see the flyers up, please remove them.

Dave and I ran into the lady looking for the blue eyed dog and got her poster out to ev-eryone on our e-mail list, also to the surrounding neighborhood presi-dents who also e-mailed their people and our Face Book page which Debby Obst is keeping up for us. Thanks to the quick actions of sending out email blasts, posting to our Facebook page, including the dog’s picture and name, the dog was found in a few days over by the Ale House when someone called it by name and it jumped into their car. Keep us in mind, for any urgent concern, the faster you let us know so we can do an email “blast” and/or post to Facebook informing others, the better your chances are for a quick solution.
