Dear Friends of Radford Athletics,

At Radford University, we are extremely proud of our student-athletes and their successes. They have and will continue to excel in the classroom and in competition, while representing our fine University in a first-class manner.

As we close the chapter on another exciting season, we are constantly pre-paring for a very bright future in Highlander Athletics. In addition to our wonderful group of student-athletes, we have excellent coaches and a very strong administrative staff. Along with the strides and progress they have made, we continue to see improvements to our facilities, making them some of the finest in the Mid-Atlantic region.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

I am proud to present to you the 2011-12 Radford University Athletics Club Annual Report in which you will find a summary of this year’s RAC informa-tion and this past year’s ac-complishments as well as what your support means to us.

Join the Club...Make a Difference!

Go Highlanders!

Robert Lineburg

Our institution and Ath-letic Department promote quality and character of each student-athlete. Our goal at Radford University is to offer the best experi-ences and opportunities for our athletes both aca-demically and athletically.

“Our success is defined by the positive experience of the student-athlete... they are the reason we are here.”

2011 ANNUAL REPORT 2

Highlander student-athletes receive strong support from academic advising to com-pliance services, giving them the tools needed to be successful in the classroom. Radford’s athletic training and strength and conditioning programs allow the student-athletes to compete at their best possible level.

A true team atmosphere, the Highlander family consists of each and every Radford student-athlete, past and present, the coaches and athletics staff, as well as our loyal donors and season ticket holders. Support for each program starts from within ath-letics and reaches out into the general university population and the community at large.

In addition, strong relationships run throughout the Highlander family binding student-athletes, coaches and staff to each other.

The Radford University athletic program offers 19 varsity sports, eight for men and 11 for women: men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track, along with field hockey, swimming, softball and volleyball for women, and baseball.

The athletic program has grown dramatically since 1974-75, when men’s sports were first offered on a varsity level. Radford currently competes in the Big South Conference, NORPAC and CCSA. A charter member of the conference, Radford has won 43 League titles in 10 different sports and has advanced to NCAApostseason play in seven sports.

“Although Radford is in a smaller community, every person I have met during my collegiate career has positively influenced the person I am today.”

- Chelsea Kelley, Softball ‘11

LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARDOn June 3, 2011, Radford University’s Chelsea Kelley (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) was honored as the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award winner in softball. One of the most prestigious accolades in collegiate athletics, Kelley was presented the trophy in front of a packed house at ASA Hall of Fame Sta-dium in Oklahoma City, home of the Women’s College World Series.

Kelley, who made an impact on the field, in the classroom and the community during her four years wearing the red and white, is the first Radford and Big South student-athlete to earn this honor. Graduating summa cum laude with a degree in sports medicine, Kelley is now working towards a post-graduate degree in physical therapy in the University’s first-year doctoral program.

TheThe award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I head coaches, national media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I softball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athlet-ics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

2011 ANNUAL REPORT

HALL OF FAMEFounded in 1995, the Radford University Athletics Hall of Fame was or-ganized to honor the most prolific and significant program participants in our century of sports.

The first competitive Radford University sports team was women’s bas-ketball which competed as the Normal School in 1911. Since those earli-est days, our program has been witness to athletic and academic All-Americans, conference champions, national champions, co-education, and ultimately a 19-team athletics program that continues to make sig-nificant strides towards national prominence.

Radford University’s athletic heritage runs deep within the history of the school and served instrumentally for decades as a key component to the education of its undergraduates. This Hall serves to honor our institution’s athletic heritage and to encourage the pride that is inherent in each graduate’s diploma.

TheThe Radford University Athletics Hall of Fame recognizes the outstand-ing contributions of former student-athletes, coaches, and staff have made to Highlander Athletics. These individuals honor the college’s edu-cational mission through their commitment to excellence in both academ-ics and athletics.

The 32 members pictured left constitute the best of the best in Radford University’s athletic history and genuinely reflect the excellence for which the Highlanders stand for.

ABOUT THE RADFORD The Radford Athletics Club (RAC) is the fundraising arm for Radford University Athletics. Through its annual fund drive, the RAC solicits contributions in support of the athletic operating budget. Additionally, the RAC aids athletic facility enhancements and other needs through capital campaigns.

AsAs a RAC member you contribute to the educational opportunities of the student-athletes representing Radford University. Each and every season, RAC members witness their impact firsthand as RU student-athletes excel both on the playing field and in the classroom.

In return for their contributions, RAC members also receive a tax deduction and athletic benefits congruent with their giving level. The benefit chart on page 13 displays the different RAC giving levels and the benefits associated with each.

- Abram Williams, Baseball ‘12

Radford University Athletics strives to provide the best competitiveexperience, educational experience, coaches, and facilities for each

student-athlete who represents the university. In doing so, our leadershipis committed to achieving excellence in each sport in which we compete.

Q&AWho can become a RAC member?

Any individual or business who wants to support RU Athletics and our student-athletes can be a RAC member.

How do I keep the basketball tickets I had last season?

Every season ticket holder who submitted their ticket renewal by the priority deadline is guaranteed their same seat location from the prior season.

Do you need to give a RAC donation to purchase season tickets?

No. However, donating to the RAC will improve the likelihood that you will be able to purchase tickets to events with restricted ticket quantities.

Which sporting events require a ticket to attend?

Currently, only men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and postseason events held by RU require a purchased ticket.

I make gifts to other areas in the University, do I receive benefits for those I make gifts to other areas in the University, do I receive benefits for those gifts?

Priority points are granted to all donors who make a gift to the Athletics Department. RAC benefits are granted exclusively to donors who provide gifts to the RAC, which are then used to support the scholarship needs and offset the operational budget of the RU Athletics Department. Contributions to other areas of RU do not earn Priority Points or other benefits involving athletics.athletics.
