Greetings K-State Fans!

It’s a terrific time to be a Wildcat! As we wrap up anotheracademic year and look forward to the next, we wouldlike to take one more opportunity to reflect on the suc-cesses of K-State Athletics in 2012-13, known by many asthe “Year of the Wildcat.”

We continue to approach every day with our Vision of aModel Intercollegiate Athletics Program in our sights andthank you for helping us reach the goals outlined in ourK-State Pledge.

Every accomplishment reviewed in the enclosed AnnualReport is a direct reflection of the significant investmentof time and resources by our student-athletes, coaches,staff and our great fans in achieving the initiatives out-lined in our rolling strategic plan.

n All programs are currently well above the required NCAA APR standard including the

women’s golf, men’s golf and men’s cross country programs who were awarded APR

Public Recognition distinction for APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

n Half of all student-athletes received a 3.0 or higher GPA in Fall 2012.

n A total of 220 student-athletes logged a 3.0 GPA or higher, earning Fall 2012 Big 12

Commissioner’s Honor Roll recognition, while 236 earned honors in the spring.

n 73 student-athletes graduated in 2012-13, including 56 in the Spring of 2013 and 14 of

which will compete as graduate students in 2013-14.

n 95 student-athletes earned Academic All-Big 12 honors during the year, while 17 were

named to the inaugural Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team.

n Katie Arrow (rowing), Allison Dorau (rowing), Samantha McCloud (rowing), David

Klaudt (golf ), Daniel Wood (golf ), Ethan Hammes (football) and Jared Loomis (football)

were recipients of the Dr. Gerald Lage Award, the Big 12’s highest academic honor.

n Senior women’s basketball player Brittany Chambers, junior women’s tennis player

Petra Niedermayerova and junior outfielder Jared King were named Big 12 Scholar

Athletes of the Year in their respective sports.

n Senior rower Samantha McCloud earned a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA in architecture,

planning and design, one of K-State’s most demanding academic programs.

n Senior men’s basketball player Rodney McGruder was recognized as the only student-

athlete in his sport to earn Academic and Athletic First Team All-Big 12 honors.

n Increased compensation for department’s graduate assistants, who provide critical

front-line support for student-athletes and athletics day-to-day operations.

n Opened new locker-rooms for men’s and women’s basketball and new strength and

training centers utilized by student-athletes from many sports.

n Continued progress on the student-athlete performance table in new West Stadium

Center, including long-term agreement with Sodexo for training table food service.

n The Ahearn Fund hosted student-athlete alumni reunions for equestrian and men’s bas-

ketball, welcoming several hundred former student-athletes and families back to campus.

n Honored former football player Mark Simoneau on-campus for his induction into the

National Football Foundation’s College Football Hall of Fame.

n Played men’s basketball road games in home towns of student-athletes including

Washington D.C. (Rodney McGruder) and New York City (Shane Southwell, Omari

Lawrence and Jordan Henriquez).

In 2012-13, Mark Simoneau became the second Wildcat football player, and first under Bill Snyder, elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. 3

In 2012-13, K-State reduced its direct University funding support from $1 million to $750,000 as part of phased-out reduction plan and will eliminate this subsidy completely in 2013-14.4

VALUE TO THE UNIVERSITY, COMMUNITY AND STATE

n President Kirk Schulz was named to a four-year term on the NCAA Board of Directors as

well as a post on the NCAA Executive Committee.

n Reduced the University direct support of athletics from $1 million to $750,000 as part of

a multi-year phase out plan. This direct subsidy will be eliminated completely in 2013-14,

one year ahead of original schedule.

n Grew licensing revenues to nearly $1.5 million, of which 27 percent goes back to the

university for student scholarships, the support of band and cheerleader scholarships

and the Division of Communications and Marketing.

n Worked with Student Governing Association to develop new three-year student-fee

agreement, establishing seat locations and student ticket prices, while helping continue

to fund over 400 part-time student employee positions throughout the department.

n Partnered with Student Governing Association and University on new Student Outdoor

Recreation Complex, including outdoor basketball, sand volleyball and tennis courts for

student-use, as well as new on-campus tennis stadium.

n Hosted several international student outings at home sporting events, including a

gathering of nearly 50 Ecuadorian students at a men’s basketball game.

n Hosted the school’s first NCAA Regional in baseball which boosted the local economy

in addition to bringing added exposure to the Manhattan community.

n Having season ticket holders now in 46 states, Ahearn Fund members in 49 states, and

NLC donors (giving $10,000 or more per year) in 19 states means millions of dollars are

coming into our state and being invested into our university and community.

n Increased student pass sales for football and men’s basketball to highest level since

2006, with over 8,000 passes sold.

n Wildcat student-athletes committed a total of nearly 3,000 hours toward community

service activities in 2012-13.

In 2012-13, USA Today named K-State one of 23 programs nationally which generated enough revenue on their own to cover expenses. 5

n Operated with a financial surplus for the fourth consecutive year which enables the

department to invest in facilities, people and programs and be a self-sufficient unit and

stronger partner.

n Named Bruce Shubert, former university VP for Administration and Finance, as

Associate AD for Business.

n Named Lindsey Babcock, former Assistant Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast

Conference, as Associate AD for Compliance.

n Named Clint Dowdle, former Assistant Athletics Director at Bowling Green State

University, as Assistant AD for Administration/Chief of Staff.

n Published contractual details of new employment agreements for Bill Snyder and Bruce

Weber.

n Launched a fan awareness sportsmanship campaign prior to the 2012-13 season.

Materials were shared with fans through football fan guide, website and in-venue public

service announcements.

n Transitioned to new compliance tracking software, providing additional resources for

education of coaches and student-athletes as well as more efficient rules monitoring.

n Conducted monthly coaches meetings with athletic director, compliance and

coaching staffs.

n Compliance office met with each department unit and team for rules education.

n Reviewed and revised position descriptions and responsibilities for all full-time

administrative staff.

n Women’s golfer Whitney Pyle named 2012-13 Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year.

CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL ATHLETIC PERFORMANCES

HISTORIC ON-FIELD SUCCESS

n Became just the second Big 12 school and one of four BCS program since 1998 to win

league championships in football, men’s basketball and baseball in the same year. First

school in Big 12 history to boast Big 12 Coach of the Year honors in football, men’s basket-

ball and baseball during the same academic year.

Football – Tallied an 11-2 overall record, including an 8-1 mark in Big 12 play to capture

the school’s second Big 12 championship and a berth in the 2013 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Volleyball – Posted a 21-9 overall record and an 8-8 mark in Big 12 play and advanced

to their 14th NCAA Tournament.

Cross Country – Laura Galvan capped off a sensational season at the NCAA Champi-

onship with a school-record 6K time of 20:19.5 in Louisville, Ky to finish 45th.

Men’s Basketball – Posted a 27-8 overall record, captured their first conference title

since 1977 with a 14-4 Big 12 mark and advanced to its 27th NCAA Tournament.

Women’s Basketball – Advanced to the postseason for the 11th time in 12 seasons with

an invitation to the WNIT despite just 7 healthy student-athletes for the last 19 games.

Track and Field – The men’s team finished fourth and women seventh at the Big 12

Outdoor Championships and third (men) and seventh (women) at Big 12 Indoors.

Men’s Golf – Hosted the Big 12 Championships where Curtis Yonke finished 10th and

the squad finished fifth.

Women’s Golf – Recorded four top-five team finishes on the season.

Rowing – Finished in fifth place at the 11-team Conference USA Championships with 37

points, while they were fifth at the Big 12 Championships.

Equestrian – Western Team earned its third Reserve National Championship in the past

four seasons (2010 and 2011) and posted an 11-7 overall record.

Tennis – The only Big 12 school to advance a doubles team (Bonacic/Niedermayerova)

and a singles player (Niedermayerova) to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championships.

Baseball – Finished the season with a 45-19 overall record en route to a Big 12 and

NCAA Regional Championship.

n Olympic silver medalist Erik Kynard finished his career with Big 12 and NCAA indoor

high jump championships and earned his seventh All-American distinction.

n Brittany Chambers became just the fourth player in Big 12 history with 2,000 points,

850 rebounds and 350 assists and was drafted by the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.

In 2012-13, quarterback Collin Klein was named the Big 12 Athlete of the Year for all sports and became K-State’s second Heisman Trophy finalist.6

IMPROVED FACILITIES THROUGH AHEARN FUND GIFTS

n The state-of-the-art, $18 million Basketball Training Facility opened in October. The

facility was recognized in Signs of the Times magazine in the Exhibits/Murals/Banners

category for its innovative branding elements.

n Installed new baseball center-field batter’s eye, helping K-State lead the nation in

several hitting categories.

n Over $125 million in facility projects underway benefitting all 458 student-athletes.

New construction includes the West Stadium Center, the Intercollegiate Rowing Center,

and the new on-campus Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.

n Increased donations to athletic department and Ahearn Fund for fourth consecutive

year. Ahearn Fund memberships reached all-time high of more than 9,000, while total

giving to K-State Athletics also reached record levels at $36.8 million for 2012-13 - nearly

tripling the 2009 total.

n Increased NLC to 300-plus members, a 6% increase over the previous year.

n Increased gross ticket sales for third straight year, reaching $15.8 million in 2012-13 and

setting program-best marks for football, men’s basketball and volleyball ticket revenue.

n Online merchandise sales reached a record $662,131 in 2012-13.

In 2012-13, K-State sold out six home football games for the first time since 1999 and also operated at 100% capacity for men’s basketball home games.8

THE BEST FAN EXPERIENCE IN THE BIG 12

n Sold out a school-record six home football games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and

operated at over 100% of capacity on the season. K-State sold its preliminary bowl game

ticket allotment through pre-orders for the second consecutive season and brought

nearly 35,000 fans to the Fiesta Bowl.

n Surveyed over 1,700 fans who attended games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium through-

out the season. Fan satisfaction rate measured at over 97% and provided valuable

feedback for continuous fan experience improvement.

n K-State ranked 24th nationally in attendance and was one of 13 schools to average over

12,000 in paid attendance for all regular season MBB home games for the third consecu-

tive year, operating at a 100% capacity for the 2012-13 season. Student attendance at the

home game vs. KU was the highest single game mark in three years, while the game vs.

Florida at Kansas City’s Sprint Center generated a third-straight crowd of over 15,000 fans.

n Ahearn Field House hosted more than 1,800 fans per match for home volleyball

contests, ranking 20th in the NCAA.

n Regular season baseball attendance was up nearly 11% per game, while nearly 8,000

fans attended the three K-State games in the NCAA Manhattan regional.

n K-State fan support helped secure four home WNIT games during the women’s

basketball team’s exciting run through the 2013 postseason tournament.

n The athletics department reinitiated the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame with public

nominations and selections for the class of 2013.

n The fan experience and sales department was recognized as one of three finalists for

college athletics marketing team of the year by the National Association of Collegiate

Marketing Administrators.

n The ticket office implemented a new mobile ticketing site, pick-your-own seat football

ticketing map for online sales and a new 3D seating map producing virtual views from

every seat in Bill Snyder Family Stadium including the new West Stadium Center.

n Announced a new multi-year third-tier television package that maximizes exposure for

K-State athletics programs through Fox Sports and K-StateHD.TV.

n Announced a funding plan, through new Ahearn Fund priority seating giving levels, for

future video and sound improvements in Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Began study and

master planning of video, sound and wi-fi in athletics venues.

n Developed a “Welcome to K-State” Committee to analyze and implement fan experi-

ence ‘best practices’ from around the country. Over 28 live K-State athletic contests were produced by K-StateHD.TV and distributed live viaFox Sports Midwest, Fox Sports Kansas City and Fox College Sports in 2012-13.

In 2012, K-State won the program’s third conference title and second as a member of the Big 12 Conference. 9

n Predicted to finish sixth in the Big 12, the Wildcats tallied an 11-2 overall record, includ-

ing an 8-1 mark in Big 12 play to capture the school’s third conference championship and

earned an invitation to the 2013 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

n K-State won a school-record six games against ranked opponents in 2012, including its

conference-championship clinching victory over No. 18 Texas. The Wildcats went 8-1

against BCS bowl-eligible teams, reeled off 10 straight wins to open the season and

ascended to the No. 1 ranking in the BCS standings in November.

n Team finished the year ranked No. 1 in the UPS Team Performance Index ratings for

special teams and fewest team miscues. The Wildcats finished third overall in the final

2012 ranking, which uses statistical information to measure efficiency and teamwork of

programs that are well balanced across all aspects of football.

n Head coach Bill Snyder was named Big 12 Coach of the Year by both the coaches and

Associated Press, while also being tabbed as the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year.

He was also a finalist for the Liberty Mutual, Eddie Robinson, Bobby Bowden and Maxwell

National Coach of the Year awards.

n QB Collin Klein became the school’s second-ever Heisman Trophy finalist and the first

since 1998, finishing third in the final voting.

n Klein was also a finalist for the Maxwell and Davey O’Brien awards and won the 2012

Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. He finished ranked in the Top 10 in school history in

rushing touchdowns, touchdown responsibility, scoring, total yards, passing efficiency,

rushing attempts, rushing yards, completions, passing touchdowns, passing yards and

pass attempts. His 55 rushing touchdowns rank fourth in Big 12 history and second

among quarterbacks.

n Swept the major football awards from the Big 12, including Offensive (Collin Klein) and

Defensive (Arthur Brown) Players of the Year, Defensive End (Meshak Williams) Player of

the Year (Collin Klein) and Coach of the Year (Bill Snyder). Twenty players were named All-

Big 12, including seven First Team selections (Cornelius Lucas and Ty Zimmerman).

n Arthur Brown, Collin Klein and Ty Zimmerman were named All-Americans.

n Three Wildcats – Arthur Brown (2nd round), Chris Harper (4th round) and Braden Wilson

(6th round) – were selected in the 2013 NFL Draft, marking the 20th straight year a

Wildcat has been taken in the draft. That streak currently ranks second among all Big 12

schools.

In 2012-13, K-State won its first men’s basketball conference title since 1977.10

BIG 12 CHAMPIONS/NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE

n Posted a 27-8 overall record and captured a share of their first conference title since

1977 with a 14-4 Big 12 mark. It is the school’s 20th overall conference championship and

the 18th won in the regular season.

n The squad also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 27th time in school history,

including a school-record tying fourth consecutive season, and received its third highest

seed – No. 4 in the West Regional – since the NCAA began seeding teams in 1979.

n Finished the season in the Top 25 of both major polls, including No. 12 in The

Associated Press and No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches polls. They were ranked for 13

consecutive weeks to end the season, including two weeks in the Top 10.

n The 27 wins were the second-most in a single-season in K-State history and just the

fifth 25-win season overall, while the 14 conference wins tie the 1958-59 team for the

most in school history.

n Led the Big 12 in five statistical categories, including scoring defense (60.4 ppg.),

turnover margin (+2.6), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4) and offensive rebounds (13.4).

n Drew the second-most fans to its home schedule with 225,503 filtering through the

turnstiles at Bramlage Coliseum and the Sprint Center.

n Senior class of Jordan Henriquez, Martavious Irving and Rodney McGruder became the

winningest class in school history with 101 victories from 2009-13. They are just the

second class to advance to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

n Three Wildcats – Rodney McGruder, Angel Rodriguez and Shane Southwell – were

named to the Coaches’ All-Big 12 teams.

n Head coach Bruce Weber was selected as Big 12 Coach of the Year by the league

coaches and The AP, while he was the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and

National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District Coach of the Year.

n Weber was just the third first-year head coach to win the Big 12 regular season since

the league’s inception in 1997, while his 27 wins are the third-most by a rookie head

coach in conference history.

n McGruder was the lone Big 12 men’s basketball student-athlete to earn both First Team

All-Big 12 honors in both academics and athletics.

n Four players, including all three seniors, graduated from K-State in May 2013.

In 2013, K-State won its first baseball conference championship in 80 years. 11

n Finished the season with a 45-19 overall record.

n Hosted and won its first NCAA Regional with victories over Wichita State, Bryant and

Arkansas and advanced to its first NCAA Super Regional, where the team lost in three

games at No. 3 Oregon State.

n Set school records for wins (45) and conference wins (16) in a single season.

n Won its first conference championship since 1933 after being predicted to finish

seventh in the preseason coaches’ poll. The team made the biggest jump in the presea-

son poll by a conference champion in Big 12 history.

n Ranked in the Top 15 of each of the final college baseball polls, including No. 13 in

Baseball America, No. 14 in the USA Today Coaches, National Collegiate Baseball Writers

Association (NCBWA) and Perfect Game rankings and No. 15 by Collegiate Baseball.

n Three Wildcats – Jared King, Ross Kivett and Shane Conlon – were selected in the 2013

Major League Baseball Draft. King was drafted in the fifth round by the New York Mets,

Kivett in the 10th round by Cleveland and Conlon in the 21st round by Kansas City.

n Two Wildcats – Jared King and Ross Kivett – earned All-America honors. Kivett was

named to the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America, National Colle-

giate Baseball Writers Association and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-

America teams, while King earned his first career All-America honor from Perfect Game.

n Relief pitcher Jake Matthys was named to the Louisville Slugger and Baseball America

Freshman All-America Teams. He finished his rookie campaign with a 9-2 record and a

stellar 2.05 ERA to go along with nine saves.

n Catcher Blair DeBord was a semifinalist for the 2013 Johnny Bench Award as the

nation’s top catcher.

n Shortstop Austin Fisher was a semifinalist for the inaugural Gregg Olsen Breakout

Player of the Year Award and a candidate for the Brooks Wallace Award as the nation’s top

shortstop.

n Swept the major baseball awards from the Big 12, as Ross Kivett was named the league

Player of the Year, Jake Matthys Freshman of the Year, Jared King co-Scholar Athlete of the

Year and Brad Hill Coach of the Year. A conference-record tying seven players were

named First Team All-Big 12, including unanimous selections Kivett, King, Conlon and

Austin Fisher.
