The 2010-11 campaign was another exciting season (sixth in the BIG EAST Conference) for Marquettefans for a number of reasons. The Golden Eagles collected several impressive team and individualaccomplishments over the course of the year and multiple initiatives for future seasons have created a highlevel of anticipation for continued success as 2011-12 rapidly approaches.

Once again in 2010-11, multiple programs represented Marquette in postseason play. The men’s basketballsquad participated in the NCAA Championship for the sixth-straight season and advanced to the Sweet 16for the 14th time in school history. The women’s team returned to the NCAA’s for the first time since2007 and advanced to the second round before falling to host Tennessee. The women’s soccer programcontinued its dominance in the BIG EAST Conference, claiming its second-straight divisional crown andadvancing to the Sweet 16 for the second time in school history.

In the classroom, two programs (women’s tennis and women’s soccer) were nationally recognized by theNCAA for their multi-year Academic Progress Rate success and 13 of the University’s 14 programs finished2009-10 above the national average. A total of 45 student-athletes completed their eligibility in 2010-11.Of the group, 28 Golden Eagles have claimed Academic All-BIG EAST accolades during their respectivecareers and nine own a cumulative GPA of 3.5-or-higher.

This past season also provided the opportunity for exciting growth in athletics, both on and off the field ofplay. The University announced the addition of varsity men’s and women’s lacrosse beginning in 2012-13.The Klein Family/KBS Soccer Pavilion, a 3,000-square-foot facility featuring dressing rooms for both teamsand officials and spectator restrooms, was dedicated in May and is located at Valley Fields.

Each of the 14 athletic programs participated in community service projects throughout the year, working inconcert with the University’s mission. Multiple teams took part in the University’s Hunger Clean-Up event, one of the nation’s largest one-day service projects. Women’s basketball, volleyball and women’s soccerraised money in support of breast cancer research with three initiatives and men’s basketball continued itsparticipation in Al’s Run. Other activities included organizing book drives, hosting clinics and conductingreading programs.

2011 marked the third year for the Intercollegiate Athletics Alumni Awards and this year’s recipients wererecognized for their many contributions to the University and community. Five awards were distributed aspart of the University’s Alumni Awards weekend in April.

Marquette student-athletes, coaches and staff continue to work hard daily to fulfill our mission of strivingfor excellence in athletics, academics and leadership in service to others in the Jesuit tradition. Thank youfor your passionate support.

Closing the Athletic Scholarship Funding Gap

BLUE & GOLD ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP FUNDAs a member of the BIG EAST Conference, Marquette gains national exposure —a powerful marketing tool for attracting academically talented students with anaffinity for sports. Marquette’s ability to consistently recruit championship-caliberstudent-athletes is highly dependent upon the success of the Blue &Gold AthleticScholarship Fund and the generosity of over 4,500 alumni and friends.

More than 4,500 alumni and friends contributedapproximately $3.4 million to the Blue & Gold Athletic Scholarship Fund – an all-time high forMarquette Athletics. The Blue & Gold Fund

provides current use scholarships for student-athletes (“one and done” resources).

The Marquette Athletic Scholarship Endowment, valued at more than $4.4 million, provided approximately $220,000 in spendable athletic scholarship aid.

Based upon Marquette’s sponsorship of 14 intercollegiate sports, NCAA provisions allowed

Marquette to award up to $4.5 millionin athletic scholarships. scholarships.

Marquette had about an $881,000 funding gap considering the NCAA’s provisions for scholarship capacity; with the addition of 24.6 scholarships for men’s and women’slacrosse in the coming years, this gap is expected to increase by $1 million.

Lifetime Achievement AwardDr. Michael P. WoodsFew individuals participate in an Olympic Games, let alone three. Dr. MichaelWoods accomplished it after switching from track to speed skating, representing Marquette on the Junior World Team and in two World SprintChampionships. He won a gold medal and two silver medals in eight all-around World Championships and was a national outdoor long trackchampion and U.S. Skater of the Year. In 1998, he was elected to the NationalSpeed Skating Museum and Hall of Fame.

Friend of Marquette Athletics Stanley J. Andrie and Barbara Gombar AndrieStan arrived on campus as a freshman walk-on football player in 1951, withnowhere to stay and very little money. One of the coaches found a room for him with two other players and got him a job at the Ardmore Bar. As asophomore, Stan received a full athletic scholarship and as a junior met hisfuture wife, Barbara, spending their first date talking on the Capitol stepsafter the Marquette–UW football game. Barbara studied in the library, andStan began studying there, too, earning all A’s in his junior and senior years.

Distinguished Alumna of the YearMary Beth H. NienhausThe ability to remain calm on the golf course and in life is a fundamental requirement for success. Mary Beth Nienhaus’ deep faith is her source. Herfavorite quote from the Bible is, “Without Him, I will be nothing, but withChrist, He will strengthen me.” The first female varsity student-athlete inMarquette history, Mary Beth actually joined the men’s golf team in 1965 afterwinning the Wisconsin Women’s Public Links Golf Association AmateurChampionship in 1963 and ’64.

Young Alumna AwardDr. Kristen L. MaskalaAfter setting standards on the basketball courtthat few have matched, Dr. Kristen Maskala hascontinued her winning ways off the court. Youwon’t find her in her No. 22 jersey, but she hasn’t strayed too far from sports: she is a highly respected orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine in West Bend, Wis. Largely responsible for helping Marquette reach the women’s NCAA Tournament forthe first time in school history in 1994, Kristen is a university legend, rankingin the top 10 in scoring, three-point field goals, free-throw percentage, steals and assists.

M Club Hy Popuch AwardPaul R. NowakowskiPaul Nowakowski’s experience at Marquette reinforced the values that wereinstilled in him by his parents: help others, and give back to the communitywhenever possible. Since graduating, Paul — who attended Marquette on atrack and field scholarship — has put these values into action personallyand professionally, providing energy and leadership to the university andcommunity. He is a strong supporter of Marquette athletics, most notablythrough the M Club, for which he is a board member and chaired the Hall ofFame Committee in 2004, ’06 and ’09 (the only three-time chair).
