“For it is in giving that we receive.” St Francis of Assisi

Dear Families,

It is wonderful to be back at school with the children, teachers and parents preparing for the second half of the year! We have much to look forward to:

Football and Netball Championships, Athletic Championships, Book Week, Instrumental Concert, Father’s Day mass, Our school’s 25 year birthday with school celebrations, Year 3 Camp and Our Foundation interviews - one of my favourite times!

I share with you a reflection to be mindful of during this busy term…

Lord, help me to be ready.

Ready for the unknown, the unexpected, the

Unhelpful, the unwelcome.

Help me to be ready, ever alert, knowing life will

Often present both opportunity and adversity.

Let me be ready, unafraid of the future, always

Confident of your powerful presence.

Remind me often that, even with my best

Preparations and greatest efforts, my life relies on You.

Amen.

Pupil Free Days Please note that we will be holding a Pupil Free Day on the following day in Term 3:

Friday 19 July NCCD

Change of Dates for first P & F and School Board Meeting Thank you to the executive of the Parents and Friends and School Board for accommodating a change of dates for the first meetings in Term 3. The change of dates allows Trish Miller from Catholic Education Sandhurst to present to our School Board.

The new meeting dates are: Thursday 25th July at 6pm School Board meeting Thursday 1st August at 7.30pm Parents & Friends Community.

Congratulations - Netball Teams Congratulations to both our Under 12 Girls and Under 12 Boys Netball Teams who won both categories of the Regional Divisional Netball Championships. Both teams will now travel to Swan Hill to compete to reach the Victorian Championships!

Special thanks to Danielle Coates for coordinating this day; as well as Matt Butcher, Annette Exell and Kate Zealley. Well done!

Child Safe statement Ministerial Order 870 requires all school members (staff, volunteers, contractors and clergy) to observe child-safe principles and behaviour towards and in the company of children.

One of the ministerial expectations is that no person is allowed to “photograph or video a child without the written consent of the parent or guardians”. This can be tricky for school community members as many of us know each other so well and enjoy taking photographs at sporting events, liturgies, etc.

I ask all parents to feel free to take photographs of their own children, but refrain from taking photographs of other children at any school events.

Deb Balls – Help needed Our past students, now in Year 11, have been invited back to be celebrated at the St. Francis of the Fields Debutante Balls. Such is the popularity of these evenings we now have four balls that are held on:

Friday 2nd August Saturday 3rd August Friday 9th August Saturday 10th August

These evenings are major fundraisers for our present students. We are hopeful that $40,000 will be raised for our school students this year. As can be imagined we need significant support over these four evenings – in setting up and cleaning up at the end of each evening.

I am hopeful that our parents can commit to helping out on one of these evenings in the knowledge that your children will benefit directly from the proceeds. Please help! Please see the flyer and rosters in this newsletter for an idea of duties and times required. We would really appreciate some people to come and assist, with the

initial set up of tables and chairs and decorations, on Wednesday 31 July at 6pm. If you are available to help, can you please email Michelle Janssen: [email protected]

St. Francis of the Fields 25 Year Birthday Celebrations On Friday 6 September we will be holding celebrations for our past and present students, staff and parents. We would love you all to join in our celebrations in some form. Please see the attached community invitation. To culminate our celebrations, we will be holding a Cabaret/Ball for all past and present staff and parents. I can guarantee there will be little talking and plenty of music, fine food and festivities. Please purchase your tickets via the link on the website or on CDF Pay. https://www.sfstrathfieldsaye.catholic.edu.au/

Assembly There will be no assembly tomorrow as we have a Pupil Free Day.

Christ has no hands but yours. Tim Moloney Principal

RE News…. St Vinnies Winter Appeal We are most grateful to the St Francis School Community for your generous

contribution to our Winter Appeal. Thank you to the staff, students and families for

supporting us so well.

Through your generosity we were able to give a ‘hand up’ to over 60 households

in our parish.

Wishing you all the best for the second semester.

Thank you! St Therese’s Conference St Vincent de Paul Society

School Happenings…. Lost Property

Please remember to clearly label all items and update labels when purchasing second-

hand items. I’m a Mum who volunteers her time so don’t know every student at the

school - items labelled with a first name and initial for the surname are unlikely to find

their way back to your child.

All clearly named items will be returned via the class tubs usually on a Friday morning.

Thank you, Kat Harrop

Request from Assisi Kindergarten CAR PARK: It has been brought to our attention that some families are entering the carpark via the exit (NO ENTRY point) located near the kindergarten.

We understand that the school driveway can appear congested during the afternoon as it is shared between families of St. Francis of the Fields and Assisi Kindergarten, however the pick-up point at the school is well controlled by St. Francis staff and traffic does flow very well.

Parents walking small children from Assisi across the car park are not expecting traffic to be entering that area from the left and this creates a high risk hazard. Please assist us in protecting everyone safety.

SCHOOL CHILDREN IN FOYER: Just a reminder that school aged children cannot be supervised by kindergarten staff in the Assisi foyer at the end of the school day.

As requested at the beginning of the year of all kindergarten families with children at St Francis of the Fields, we ask for a safe and convenient meeting place to be pre-arranged by families on the school grounds.

Once the school aged child/ren are in your care, we welcome them to come to the kindergarten with you to pick up their siblings.

Join ‘Teams’ – Making Marriages Better ‘Teams’ is a movement within the Catholic Church designed to enrich spirituality in marriage and make good marriages better. An information session will be held on Wednesday 31st July, time and venue will be decided according to numbers. To register your interest and find out more about the night please email [email protected] or ring Michelle 5441 6244.

St. Francis of the Fields

Debutante Balls 2019

Friday 2 & Saturday 3 August

Friday 9 & Saturday 10 August The 2019 St. Francis Debutante Balls are one of the major fundraisers for St. Francis of the Fields. It is a fantastic fundraiser because we just ask for your time and not your money! The Debutante Balls are held for Year 11/12 students. Ex-St. Francis students have first preference but the Debutantes and their partners can be from the wider Bendigo community meaning the money raised comes from outside of our school. The Deb Ball Committee is calling for volunteers to come along and enjoy helping out at these wonderful events. A sample of ‘jobs’ on the night include:-

Collecting entry tickets and viewing entry coin donations;

Car park attendants:

Escorting guests to tables; or

Clearing of tables (waitressing not required). If you are able to help, either fill in the lists at the office or please email Michelle:

E | [email protected]

Thank you for your support. St. Francis Deb Ball Committee Reecy Owins, Donna Stebbins, Michelle Janssen,Deb Breene & Jacqui Pethybridge.

The Mercy Connect Project, part of Mercy Works, has supported students from a

refugee/asylum seeker background in Ballarat Schools since 2012 and would like to

commence supporting students in Bendigo.

The project aims to provide mentoring for young people to optimize their literacy

development, academic and social learning. Often this leads to a long term mentoring

relationship.

Mercy Connect volunteers work with students during school hours and the volunteer commitment is for

approximately three hours per week. Experience working in an educational setting is preferred but,

volunteers receive on-going training and support.

Obtaining a current Working with Children Check is part of the Application Process.
