    MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR GENERAL

Electrical power is the most important input for developmentand progress of any country, Government of India has beenendeavoring to increase installed Power Generating Capacity

continuously to maintain an annual growth rate of 9%.

The installed generating capacity of our country as on 31stDecember, 2011 is 1,86,655 MW and at the end of the 11th Five Year Plan it isexpected to be 2,00,000 MW. To achieve this target, a large number of ThermalPower Plants including large capacity ultra Mega projects at Pit Head and coastalareas have been envisaged. Besides generation capacity additions, the matchingTransmission and Distribution Network for evacuation of power is on the anviland a strong National Power Grid is being planned by inter-connecting regionalgrids with hybrid system consisting of HVDC, Ultra High Voltage AC (765/1200KV) and Extra High Voltage AC (400 KV) Lines.

The Power Development programs in forthcoming 12th & 13th five year planswould require enormous efforts in providing adequate trained manpower to copeup with the new technologies being introduced from time to time. A large numberof trained manpower is required for Operation & Maintenance of old and as wellas new Thermal Power Plants. Power generation is a complex process and manbehind these processes involving complex machinery along with its controlmechanism is extremely important. To meet this requirement, NPTI has beenconducting a Post Graduate Diploma Course which covers mandatoryrequirement under Indian Electricity Act 2003. The course aims at providingessential skills to the student for Engineering, Planning, Project Management,Erection & Commissioning, Operation and maintenance of Thermal PowerPlants. NPTI has its own state-of-the-art Hi-quality, Hi-fidelity, Digital, Real-Time,Full scope coal based Thermal Power Plant and CCGT simulators complete withData Acquisition System. The students have to undergo compulsory training onthese simulators.

This high quality program has been designed to meet the requirement of powerindustry. As a result more than 2500 students who have successfully completedthe training programs are gainfully placed with reputed companies in PowerSector

    ABOUT NPTI

    NPTI Corporate Centre

National Power Training Institute (NPTI), the national apex body under theMinistry of Power, Government of India, has been engaged in the service ofHuman Resources Development in the countrys power sector since 1965. NPTIoperates on all India basis through its five Regional Institutes at Badarpur (NewDelhi), Neyveli (Tamil Nadu), Durgapur (West Bengal), Guwahati (Assam),Nagpur (Maharashtra) and and four specialized Institutes i.e. Power System

Training Institute (PSTI) & Hot Line Training Centre (HLTC) at Bangalore, andHydro Power Training Center (HPTC) at Nangal & Centre for AdvancedManagement and Power Studies (CAMPS) at Faridabad. All institutes of NPTIare fully equipped with latest state-of-art training infrastructure and expertfaculties with long years of professional teaching background as well as R&Dexposure. These institutes are conducting a number of training programs forPower Engineers, Operators and Technicians in the areas of Thermal & HydroGeneration and Power System. To provide off-job/hands on operation training,NPTI is equipped with three computerized full scope, fossil fuel Thermal PowerPlant Simulators. Two of them of 210 MW thermal power Simulators areavailable at Badarpur and Nagpur institutes and a 500 MW Simulator at

Faridabad. Also NPTI is having one CCGT Simulator of 435 MW at Faridabadand one Hydro Simulator at HPTC, Nangal. NPTI also provides consultancy tothe Utilities on training and technical problems including setting up of PlantLevel/State Level Training Institutes. The Regional Institutes are conductinglarge number of long-term and short-term courses every year. Long-termcourses (52 weeks) cover the mandatory requirements under Indian ElectricityAct 2003. In addition, these institutes are also conducting on plant/on-sitetraining programmes as per the need of the Power Sector organisations. Since

inception over 1,80,000 personnel of various levels have been imparted trainingby the Institutes of NPTI.NPTI is also conducting 4-year B. Tech. (Power Engg.) recognised by AICTE atits Badarpur, Durgapur, Nagpur, Regional Institutes and 2-year M.B.A. (PowerManagement) at the CAMPS Faridabad.

In order to meet the requirement of skilled/trained man-power, NPTI & NTPChave set up Solapur Power Training Institute at Solapur(Maharashtra). Theinstitute is offering NCVT recognized courses (ITI) for 8th pass/10thpass/12thpass students as well as working personnel of power sector.

    THE NEED FOR THE COURSE

The Indian Power Sector with more than 1,86,000 MW installed capacity atpresent has an annual growth of 6% approx. This huge annual growth of IndianPower Sector along with technological advancements and sophistication during

last few decades has, in turn, been demanding trained man power. The technicalknowledge acquired from Engineering Colleges provides the basic foundation, which needs to be supplemented with the Applied Engineering skills so as togroom the engineers for efficient functioning at every stage of planning, designing, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, transmission and distribution of power supply industry.

NPTI recognized the need for making this technically trained manpower readilyavailable to the Power Sector in line with its present and future requirements. Itwas felt that requirement of trained manpower for Power Sector could be fulfilledif the engineers after passing their engineering degree are groomed byconducting a technical course approved by the competent authority ofGovernment of India and giving them an exposure to the theoretical as well aspractical aspects of operation and maintenance of thermal power plants.

In view of this, NPTI has upgraded its 52 week Graduate Engineers Course, which is being conducted for more than four decades, to the level of PostGraduate Diploma Course in Thermal Power Plant Engineering. The coursefulfills the mandatory requirements of Indian Electricity Act 2003.The course is designed to improve knowledge and enhance skills of freshgraduate engineers/working Engineers who wish to make their career in PowerSector.

The 17th batch of thispost Graduate Diploma course shall be starting from20/08/2012.
