Dear Parent

Lisneal College opened in 2004 and moved to this superb site on the Crescent Link Road in 2007. This was the most exciting development in Controlled Secondary Education in the city and surrounding area for almost half a century.

Sustainability had been a major consideration in building the new Lisneal College. Daylight, natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting and solar energy had been used to reduce the building’s carbon footprint, save energy costs and meet the Department for Education’s brief for a building that would bring sustainable development to the heart of the learning experience.

This is an exciting time for pupils transferring to Lisneal College. The new Year 8 intake will have access to the most up to date and state-of-the-art facilities.

The College will greatly enhance the learning opportunities for succeeding generations. It has already been possible to provide a wider choice of subjects for our pupils both at Key Stage Four and at Sixth Form. Currently there are 120 pupils in our Sixth Form studying a combination of subjects drawn from nine curricular areas.

Changing schools can be quite a daunting task but I trust that you will find the ethos of Lisneal College both warm and welcoming. You can rest assured that, if you entrust your child to our care for the next crucial stage of his or her development, we will do what is necessary to ensure that he or she is valued as a person, afforded every opportunity to develop personally and academically and be prepared to take their place in society.

If I can be of any assistance to you throughout the process do not hesitate to get in touch.

Looking forward to meeting you at our Open Nights at 7.15pm on either Wednesday 11th or Thursday 12th January.

SCIENCE

GEOGRAPHY and TOURISM

Setting out for a Field Study

We have only one world and geography encourages students to appreciate the role they have to play in looking after this unique resource.

It is an enjoyable subject which gives students the opportunity to carry out investigations, problem solve and develop their geographical, social and personal skills for the world of work. Topical issues, such as recycling, tourism, global warming and many more are discussed and researched in our new ICT suite.

All students take part in fieldwork each year, visiting many of Northern

of the University of Ulster through the StepUp programme. Many of our students have progressed to university for further study or found employment in science-based occupations.

Ireland’s beaches, rivers, forests and other local environments.

Pupils can continue their study of geography to GCSE level or this subject also lends itself to the study of GCSE, ‘Leisure and Tourism’. This is an exciting GCSE that has been introduced as a response to the job opportunities available to our young people. It involves linking with local businesses to create portfolios of work and an exam unit.

‘A’ level Travel and Tourism has also proved a popular choice with exciting employment opportunities.

History is a fascinating subject which pupils at Lisneal have always enjoyed and has an excellent success rate at both GCSE and A level. Key Stage Three pupils have the opportunity to study a wide range of historical periods including a study of medieval life in England, the life of the Plains Indians in the 19th Century and an in depth study of the First World War to name a few.

While studying History pupils will develop a wide range of skills including managing information, decision making, problem solving, working together, I.C.T., thinking skills and creativity. History also contributes greatly to the development of literacy skills, so important to every other aspect of a pupil’s progress.

HISTORY

This is a vibrant department with highly motivated teachers who strive to bring out the best in all pupils regardless of ability. It is fully equipped with the latest

HOME ECONOMICS andHEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

technology for all areas of the subject.

All pupils study Home Economics at Key Stage 3. Thereafter it is offered as an option. There are 3 Key Concepts for Home Economics

Healthy Eating•Home and Family Life•Independent Living •

We aim to provide pupils with rich learning experiences, the opportunity to develop practical skills, demonstrate initiative, solve problems and make informed decisions. Activities are differentiated to meet the needs of all abilities.

The History Department strive to provide the pupils with a wide variety of educational trips to enhance their understanding of History and widen their life experiences. We currently provide trips to the Somme Centre, Ulster American Folk Park and Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. This year GCSE and A Level pupils visited Krakow in Poland as part of their 20th Century studies and A level pupils took part in a trip to the World War I battlefields in Belgium and France.

Pupils choosing Home Economics at Key Stage 4 can opt to study GCSE Food and Nutrition or Child Development. GCSE Health and Social Care is also offered as a Double Award subject.

Whether studying at Key Stage 3 or Key Stage 4, emphasis is placed where possible, on active learning and encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own learning.

At AS and A2 level we offer Double and Single Award Health and Social Care. This has proven to be a very popular option with students achieving excellent results.Study of this subject prepares students for 3rd level education or employment.

ICTAll pupils study ICT at a variety of levels with a view to ensuring that they have the opportunity to gain an external accreditation in the subject. Pupils work to acquire ICT skills through hands-on experience and practice. In so doing they will, for example,

learn to prepare spreadsheets, databases, use charts and graphics and desktop publishing. They then have a number of opportunities during their school career to earn credit for their competences through a variety of examinations. Such accreditation and the vital key skill which it recognises in a formal way, prepares pupils for a range of occupations where competency in ICT is now a requirement. ICT is offered to Advanced Level and in the summer 2011 double award ICT A Level examinations, two Lisneal pupils were again the top achieving pupils in Northern Ireland being placed 1st and 2nd. This continues the success for our A level students who also came 1st, 2nd and 3rd in these examinations in 2010 and 1st and 2nd in 2008.

Business Studies is a subject which pupils can choose to study at the end of Key Stage 3. We offer both GCSE and BTEC choices. These courses afford students the opportunity to acquire and develop the knowledge, understanding and relevant business skills necessary for the workplace or in further education and training. They lay the foundation for Advanced Study at Lisneal College or other locations of further and higher education. They can lead to employment opportunities in business, administration, education and the public services.

Other subjects offered by the department are Office Administration, Business & Enterprise and OCR Text & Word Processing which will allow students to take a more vocational route to further education. The Business Studies Department is highly successful with an excellent

record of impressive examination success at GCSE and A level. In addition, at Key Stage 3, pupils are introduced to two world religions other than Christianity.

In this department, we aim to present the various teaching topics in a fresh and challenging way, allowing pupils the opportunity to examine and reflect on their own attitudes and ultimately encourage them to respect the religious beliefs, values, practices and lifestyles of others. All pupils are encouraged to think for themselves and we endeavour to create expressive and dynamic students who develop to their full potential and can express themselves through new ideas and experiences.

Music is taught in a purpose built department, which is separated from the rest of the school. We have three classrooms fully equipped with percussion equipment and keyboards. Each classroom has small practice rooms, which pupils are able to use when taking part in composing and group activities.

Music is taught throughout the school. At KS3, pupils are encouraged to perform, listen and appraise their work at all times. They take part in many activities to help them become more mature composers and performers.

We offer music at GCSE and A-Level, recently adding Music Technology at A-Level which has proved very popular.

The music department puts on a musical every two years, and pupils can also take part in the School Choir, Wind Band, String Ensemble, Jazz Group and other Ensembles which take place on a weekly basis.

Many students will go on to study music at University or performance related courses at other Institutions.

There are two tutor rooms where pupils are taught by WELB music staff, and two dedicated computer rooms, where pupils can avail of software such as Sibelius and Reason. In the recording studio we have state of the art equipment, which provides pupils the opportunity to make professional recordings of their own work and performances.

In what is now a more enlightened society it is recognised that pupils in mainstream schooling can have a wide range of special or additional needs which if not addressed can act as a barrier to their learning and development. To address these needs Lisneal College has a well resourced Department with 5 full-time teaching staff and a large number of valued Learning Support Assistants. Within school pupils with special needs are catered for in a variety of ways. Some pupils

LEARNING SUPPORTare placed in small classes where work is differentiated in terms of pace, content and methodology to ensure that the curriculum is accessible. Others who have specific learning difficulties are offered the opportunity through parallel support to work individually or as part of a small group to overcome their difficulties. Other pupils cope best with the support of a Learning Support Assistant. Pupils with behavioural or emotional needs work with trained staff who put in place strategies aimed at limiting any detrimental effects on educational achievement which might accrue. Diagnosis, monitoring and evaluation are on-going and teachers are kept up-to-date on a regular basis with information and developments to enable them to best cater for pupils in their classes. Pupil progress is monitored closely and every effort is made to ensure that pupils reach their full potential.

Sixth form numbers continue to increase in Lisneal. This year we had over 65 students entering year 13. We work closely with our partner schools in the Foyle Learning Community. Students from Lisneal attend A level courses in Foyle and Londonderry and Oakgrove Colleges. Students from these schools along with other students from St. Mary’s and St. Brigid’s attend A level courses at Lisneal.

Prefects provide a valuable role in supporting the smooth running of the school and this year all

SIxTH FORMprospective prefects undertook a leadership course in Year 13 to develop their potential. This course has been externally verified thus giving the students more evidence of their acquired skills which is useful for completing job and UCAS applications.

The school formal continues to be one of the highlights of the school year and as well as attending our formal, Lisneal’s senior prefects were invited to and attended many of our Local school’s formals and in turn they sent representatives to our

school formal. It is great to see how all our Local sixth forms are working so closely together.

The progress of pupils is systematically monitored. Data is used to inform, evaluate and review practice within the school, the aim being to raise standards, facilitate continuous improvement and ensure the effective teaching and learning of pupils during their time of school.

Central to the core values of the school is the belief that school is more than a place where pupils are taught subjects and prepared for examinations. Whilst these retain importance and are a priority, school also seeks to offer a stimulating and supportive environment where relationships and the ethos which informs practice provides an opportunity for a pupil to develop as a well-rounded individual with informed positive and tolerant attitudes.

To these ends, Lisneal College provides a learning environment where moral, spiritual and social values are developed within a caring community, where the pastoral and academic dimensions go hand in hand and the establishment of positive relationships are viewed as central to the achievement of pupils.

A range of extra-curricular activities offer pupils opportunities to develop personal, social and recreational skills and explore issues which they deem relevant within a safe and secure environment.

At Key Stage 4 and at 16-19 (Years 13 and 14 ), Lisneal College continues to build on past success to provide a wide range of subjects and accreditation which allows pupils to further develop their skills, abilities and knowledge, follow their interests and make choices which offer route-ways into Vocational Training, Further and Higher Education or employment.

The curriculum at this level offers a range of applied/academic and general/academic courses aimed at providing pupils with viable and potential career choices linked to the needs and demands of a changing economy – locally and globally. Some of these are now offered in collaboration with other schools which, like Lisneal College, are members of the Foyle Learning Community.

In Key Stage 3 the Curriculum is common for all pupils and is determined by the requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum which was introduced in September 2007.

The curriculum is comprised of the following Learning Areas:– Language and Literacy, •Mathematics and Numeracy, •the Arts, •the World Around Us, •Personal Development and Mutual Understanding and•Physical Education.•

The curriculum also provides for key elements such asPersonal Health, •Cultural and Spiritual Awareness, •Employability and Sustainable Development and •Spiritual Awareness.•

Within the school a Programme of Study for each Learning Area is followed by all pupils. This allows pupils to access knowledge and understanding within each area of the curriculum.

Careful consideration is given to the selection of materials and teaching methods with an appropriate focus on how children learn in addition to what children learn.

Assessment takes place in accordance with regulations and guidelines provided by CCEA. Reports are issued to parents twice a year.

The curriculum also allows pupils to develop skills and capabilities they need for life and work in a changing world. The cross-curricular skills are the key basic requirements which young people need to achieve –literacy, numeracy and ICT. Other skills and capabilities targeted within the curriculum are

Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities •Problem -solving and decision-making, •Self-management and Working with others, •Managing information, and •Being creative.•

Pupils in Year 8 are assigned to classes on the basis of performance in Standardised Tests and on advice received from primary schools, our aim being to afford equal opportunity and accessibility to the curriculum and facilitate the development, progression and achievement of the individual pupil to his/ her potential.

Pupils with learning difficulties are given extra support. In addition to differentiated provision of the curriculum this may take the form of specialist tuition offered over a period of time and the allocation of learning support. Such provision is determined, in consultation with parents, by information obtained from a battery of diagnostic assessment instruments and on advice obtained from the Educational Psychology Service of the Western Education and Library Board.

The aim of this subject is to equip students with the information and skills for the world of work, and life after school. It is an enjoyable subject that covers many issues faced by young people today. These include citizenship, skills for the workplace, CVs and personal, health and social issues to name but a few.

The Drama Studio is bright and spacious with spotlights to help focus students’ performances. Year 8 students are timetabled for one period of drama a week for the whole year. Drama encourages students to explore the world around them; to respond to the feelings of others; to develop communication skills which are vital in all subjects.

Students will learn how to use mime, improvisations and role-play and to sustain the characters they create.

dRAMAThey are encouraged to evaluate their own work as well as that of others. Drama builds teamwork, helps children to get along together while having a great time.

It is an exhilarating and entertaining process and one that most students love.

In addition pupils have the opportunity to become members of the School Orchestra and participate in school shows, Prize-giving, concerts and musical events.
