Take hold of your future

We call our style of education ‘applied learning’. That means that we teach theory thoroughly and thoughtfully, but also ensure you take an active role in your education. No matter what you study you will have the chance to get a real understanding of your chosen industry: creating, discovering, testing and experiencing first-hand what it will take to make your career and lifestyle goals a reality.

Otago Polytechnic provides excellent learning opportunities to its diverse population of students and plays a significant role in the economic, social and cultural development of the Otago region. We are active and present throughout New Zealand, delivering education from our Otago-based campuses and Community Learning Centres and offer distance and blended learning programmes to cohorts of students across the country.

Otago Polytechnic is a highly-regarded institute of technology and, in 2010, was ranked New Zealand’s number one tertiary institution for degree completions*. Our personalised approach to delivering education and the associated services and support sets us apart from other tertiary providers. It positively impacts the quality of our programmes and courses whether they are delivered in a traditional setting, or through online or blended methods. Our energetic lecturers are successful in their own right, share their enthusiasm for teaching and learning with others and teach methodologies that lie at the cutting edge of industry.

The best measure of the success of our approach is our graduates. We aim to send highly capable people into the workplace armed with practical skills, the ability to generate original thoughts and ideas and the capacity to adapt to the ever-changing work environment.

At Otago Polytechnic we encourage you to make the most of the opportunities to get a great start (or a good step forward) in your chosen career. To help you on your way, we make sure our programmes are industry-relevant and that you have the chance to learn by both thinking and doing while you’re studying with us.

When you do decide on a career for yourself, the qualifications you need can often seem out of reach.

Capable NZ

Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) is acknowledged internationally as a way of formally recognising the experience and knowledge you have gained over a lifetime. Otago Polytechnic is home to Capable NZ, the leading organisation for delivery of APL in the country.

Prior learning is a combination of career and life experiences. We understand that through these experiences you will have gained valuable skills, but that this knowledge is often hard to measure.  APL is a rigorous, internationally-recognised process, designed especially to measure your existing knowledge against formal academic qualifications.

APL is available at Capable NZ for people who can draw on their own experiences and demonstrate a deep understanding of their desired qualification area. Because it requires far less investment of time and money than traditional tertiary study, it is especially valuable for those who are currently employed. Capable NZ can support you to achieve a range of qualifications including certificates, diplomas and degrees. The APL process not only assesses full qualifications, but also part qualifications such as the second year of a bachelor’s degree.

The APL Process

Capable NZ facilitators help candidates from a wide range of backgrounds to select the best qualification for them based on their experience. Candidates then enter a process of supported preparation (called facilitation) where they will be encouraged to identify, express, demonstrate and reflect on the knowledge and skills learned in the workplace and other relevant life experiences. A rigorous assessment at the conclusion of this process will result in the awarding of all, or part, of a recognised qualification.

Programmes

Qualifications in business, health, design, hospitality, sport and adventure, trades and technical careers and life sciences are all offered through APL at Capable NZ. We offer several established pathways but can customise the process to suit your needs.

Capable Workplaces

In tertiary institutions throughout the world, education has traditionally been about teaching an ‘off-the-shelf’ course. It focuses on general skills and knowledge – be it in management or design or political philosophy – and students will apply that knowledge to their careers. Capable Workplaces, by contrast, turns this concept on its head: we start with the organisations and with learners. What skills do you require? What do staff members need to progress their careers in your workplace? What particular challenges do you and your staff members have on the horizon that could be used as rich learning opportunities?

We then develop a programme that meets nationally recognised standards at all levels, focusing on degrees and postgraduate qualifications. Capable Workplaces is based on partnership. Courses of study are negotiated between learners, employers and Capable NZ, with each party playing a distinct and important role.

Capable Teachers

Otago Polytechnic and the University of Otago have established a National Centre of Excellence in Technology Teaching. We can help you fast-track into a career as a fully-qualified food and/or technology teacher, by giving you marks for the skills you already have.

If you are already a food and/or technology teacher but don’t have a degree, we can help you upgrade your qualifications to give them the same status as your colleagues’, without making you start from scratch.

As a student in Dunedin you’ll be in good company! The city has more than 26,000 students – that’s about one fifth of the total population, and most live in and around the North Dunedin Polytechnic and University campuses. Living in such a student-oriented city means great facilities and a fantastic student culture!

Whether you come to study tourism or design, English language or cookery, engineering or information technology, you will find Dunedin a fun, lively and adventurous place to live – and one of the best things about studying in Dunedin is that you don’t need lots of money to enjoy yourself. Rent is generally cheaper than in other New Zealand centres, transport costs are minimal and students enjoy discounts in many of the city’s shops and businesses.

Coiled around the base of Otago Harbour, Dunedin can be both beautiful and intriguing; the lights of the city as you arrive from the north at night, the countless nearby beaches, the pockets of native bush, the many examples of original Victorian architecture. However, Dunedin’s culture is also unique. New Dunedinites will become aware of the city’s proud Scottish heritage as soon as they hear the drone of the bagpipes, see the statue of Robbie Burns in the centre of town or visit the pub that bears his name. Dunedin is home to three Marae and a thriving Pacific Island and international community. The city plays a great part in sustaining the arts, music, sporting, fashion and recreation cultures of New Zealand.

Supervised Accommodation

Supervised accommodation is a great option, especially for first year students who have neverlived away from home. You are guaranteed to meet heaps of new people, you’ll probably gettwo or three square meals a day and you won’t have to worry about extra expenses like powerand phone rental.

There are plenty of properties to rent in Dunedin – they range from top-line trendy apartmentsto traditional old villas to studio rooms. Flats located close to campus are likely to be snappedup first, but be careful not to be too hasty when you sign up; there are more flats available thanthere are students to rent them. Shop around and you are likely to get better value for moneyand a higher standard of living. Dunedin has many real-estate agencies that list both vacant flats, and connect people looking for flatmates.

Unfurnished Flats: Generally cost between $85 and $115 per week in rent and another $80 to $100 in expenses like power, phone and food. You may need to sign a lease and pay a bond to the landlord when you move in. If you don’t want to sign a lease for an empty flat there are always lots of other students looking for others to share established flats. Check the newspapers, Internet and campus noticeboards for ‘flatmate wanted’ advertisements.

Furnished Flats: Typically cost slightly more – about $85 to $140 per week for rent, and are less common. Your expenses will most likely be the same as in an unfurnished property.

Studio Rooms: Cost from $120 to $220 per week. Often this includes power, heating, local telephone calls and cleaning of the common areas. Higher-priced studios can include ensuite facilities.
