Power Plant Controller (PPC) Gamesa Electric PV inverters have a very flexible and dynamic hardware/software circuitry that allows operation far beyond of the limits imposed by international standards. Although the inverters are normally configured to meet standard applications (i.e. official grid codes, maximum production of active power, …) it is possible upon client or grid operator requests to modify these standard setups to overcome problems related with low quality grids or to provide grid stability capabilities.

The set of control equipment required to carry-out the above listed characteristics is called Gamesa Electric Power Plant Controller.

In order to improve the grid quality, grid operators are increasingly demanding to new PV plants higher and higher technical requirements: On-demand active and reactive power generation capability

in order to match grid power generation and consumptions. Capability of power factor regulation at PCC. The inverters

shall regulate reactive current in order to match the power factor required by the operator at PCC.

Capability of voltage regulation at PCC. The inverters shall regulate reactive current in order to normally obtain a PCC voltage of 1 p.u.

Reactive current injection during voltage dips or immediately after the voltage dip.

Reactive power injection/absorption at nights. Control of active power – frequency regulation, ramp-up

control… Occasionally control of additional equipment as capacitor/

inductor bank or Statcom units could be required to fulfill the above referred requirements. A new trend is the requirement of energy storage capability, actually required by some grid operators. Battery chargers and battery banks should also be controlled in this scenario.

Gamesa Electric’s Power Plant Controller paired with Gamesa E-PV inverters, Gamesa E-Statcom and Gamesa E-PCSs (bi-directional inverters for energy storage systems) can perform all these requirements.

Each Gamesa E-PV inverter or Gamesa E-PCS has a Webserver platform accessible by introducing the Internet Protocol address (IP address) of the equipment in a web browser. If no internet connection is available with the inverter, the Webserver is accessible through a laptop connected to the inverter with an Ethernet cable.

The Webserver allows both remote control and remote monitoring.

The remote control actions that can be managed through the Webserver are:

Start/stop the inverter. Define the power factor. Define a maximum limit to the active power.

The remote monitoring shows the most important variables of the inverter in real time (electrical parameters, thermal parameters, warnings and alarms) and shows also plots and graphs of the active power, reactive power and energy generated.

All this information can be sent to customer SCADA for analysis and data record through open communication protocols.

The Webserver is a very useful tool for those plants were there is no plant SCADA installed, or during the commissioning of the PV plants when the plant SCADA is not yet installed, or in those cases when the plant SCADA is out of order.
