Problem Description

PT. Energy Management Indonesia (Persero) (EMI) is a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) focused on energy efficiency, energy conservation, and resource conservation. Located in Pancoran Area, South Jakarta, EMI provides various energy efficiency services such as Energy Audit, Industrial/Process Performance Study, PROPER consultancy, ESCO (Energy Service Company), Feasibility and Technology Evaluation Study, Project Management and Assistance Services, Engineering Designs, and Benchmarking and Gap Closing.

As the only SOE focused on energy efficiency, energy conservation, and resource conservation, EMI's vision is to be the leading provider of energy and resource efficiency services, especially water, and the leading provider of renewable energy comprehensively (end to end Energy Service Company), while contributing significantly to the national energy security.

In its experience of 31 years since established, EMI has been involved in numerous feasibility studies and energy audits, especially in fulfilling the obligation mandated by Government Decree no. 70/2009 which compels every facility using more than 6000 TOE of energy yearly to implement energy management programs. One of such projects is an Energy Audit on a Palm Oil Mill that produces Crude Palm Oil.

1. Inroduction

2. Energy AuditsEMI conducted an Energy Audit on a Palm Oil Mill in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia that processed 60 tons FFB/day. Energy Audit is conducted as follows:

Preparation and Planning Phase

Preparation and Planning Phase is done to optimize the Energy Audit to its need. In this phase, numerous activities are done:

Confirmation of Audit Criteria Confirmation of Scope of Work Energy Audit Team Selection Audit Procedure and Execution Strategy Development Audit Checklist Development Preliminary Walkthrough Visit Preliminary Data Collection Preliminary Analysis

Data Collection and Review

Historical data of an energy user is an important data needed to build its energy usage baseline. This baseline will be used to compare the current energy performance of the facility with its historical performance, which then can be used to set goals and target of energy efficiency programs. Energy performance are usually measured as Energy Intensity or Specific Energy Consumption, that is the ratio of energy consumption and production rate within the same timeframe. In this case, it will be measured as energy per ton CPO produced.

Facility Survey and Measurement

Facility survey and measurement is conducted to measure current as-is performance of the facility, including and especially its energy usage. In an industrial facility audit, the measurement and data collection are conducted within the developed and agreed scope of audit, expressed in the Audit Execution Strategy.

Operation Practice Observation and Review

Operation observation and review is conducted based on the historical data collection and current performance to determine the facility's Energy Load/Demand profile, correlation of energy usage and production, and energy usage impact to environment. All of the data will be used to further and deepen the analysis of the audit itself.

Data Documentation and Analysis

Collected data can be classified into three types: operation data, energy generation data, and energy usage data. These data will be then analyzed to determine the facility's energy efficiency potential. The potentials will be then classified into three types based on the effort needed for its implementation: no cost programs, low cost programs, and capital investment programs.

Reporting and Recommendation

Reports of the energy audit will cover the whole activities starting from the preparation phase to the result and recommendation based on data analysis.

An Energy Audit was conducted on a Palm Oil Mill (POM) with capacity of 60 tons of FFB/day. Palm Oil Extraction in this POM is expected to generate solid wastes and liquid wastes. The solid wastes comprised of Empty Fruit Bunch, Palm Oil Shell, and Fibers with a generation rate of 230 kg/ton FFB (wet-based), 70 kg/ton FFB (wet-based), and 130 kg/ton FFB (wet-based) respectively. Currently, the fibers and the shells are used as fuels for power co-generation while the empty fruit bunches are composted. The specification of the wastes is shown in table below.

Wastes Calorific Value (J/g)

Empty Fruit Bunch

Palm Oil Shell

Palm Oil Fibers

4,900.50

4,400.00

5,700.00

The audit found that there is a potential to optimize the solid waste of the POM as fuel to generate electricity. The power then can be self-used or exported to the outside grid (i.e. PLN grids) under a Power Purchase Agreement Mechanism.

For that, the participant is asked to determine the techno-economically best technology to utilize the solids waste as fuel to generate electricity power with intent to export. This technology must cover the solid waste handling, solid waste pretreatment, and power generation. This technology must also consider: , , and energy generation efficiency operability and continuity technical and economic feasibility.
