Welcome to the October issue of Princes Risborough View magazine. By the time you read this the trees will be showing some Autumn colour and the children will have settled back into school.

This is always a good time to think about new hobbies and here at PR View we hope to be able to help with that. Ian Shaw (a new advertiser on P19) is offering Piano lessons, Clickettyclack

(P23) can supply everything you need to start knitting or to revisit an old skill, or why not visit Princes Risborough Market on a Thursday and let Kirsty Collins at Moss Stitch Yarns (P11) help you with knitting and crochet ideas.

If you would like to make new friends and enhance your local environment why not get involved with the Risborough Countryside Group (see Community section for more details) or the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway (Community section and

on our front cover), who are always looking for volunteers to help with a wide range of services from serving cream teas to manning the ticket office.

If you know of a community organisation that is not featured here and would benefit from free publicity why not suggest that they get in touch with us here at Princes Risborough View and we will deliver that information FREE to 4000 homes and business. ([email protected] or Tel: 07500 048230)

Recipe of the Month

Get your kids involved in making these spooky cup cakes then watch them crawl off the plates into hungry mouths!

You’LL nEEd:Muffin tin with 6 paper muffin cases,120g plain flour, 140g castor sugar,1 ½ teaspoons baking powder, Pinch of salt,40g butter at room temperature,100ml milk, ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 egg

dEcoration:100g butter at room temperature, 200g icing sugar, 1 heaped teaspoon cocoa powder, ¼ teaspoon milk, 80g melted milk chocolate, 6 marshmallows, 3 liquorice wheels, 6 liquorice blackberries, 12 white chocolate buttons

1. Pre-heat oven 300f 170c gas mark 32. Put the flour, sugar, butter and baking powder

in a bowl and mix with an electric beater on a low speed.

3. Whisk the egg and milk together and gradually add to the dry ingredients mixing with the beater on a slow speed.

4. The mixture will be quite battery and loose. Spoon into the muffin cases so they are about ¾ full and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 20-25 minutes.

5. When the muffins are springy to touch remove from the oven and cool completely. If the cakes have risen above the level of the cake case just cut the top off to give a flat surface for decorating.

6. Sieve the icing sugar into a bowl and add the butter and mix together thoroughly, take two tablespoons of the butter icing and put in a separate bowl, to this you need to sieve in the cocoa powder and mix well together add ¼ teaspoon of milk to the chocolate mix to give it a good consistency to pipe.

7. Place the marshmallows on the end of cocktail sticks and coat with the melted chocolate stand in eggcups to dry.

8. Smooth the butter icing onto the cake giving an even coverage all over.

9. Put the chocolate icing into a greaseproof piping bag and pipe circles from inside out starting small in the centre and getting larger to the outside of the cake, then take a cocktail stick and drag it through the chocolate lines about 6 times from the centre out

10. Take the liquorice blackberries and attach one to each marshmallow with a little butter icing to form the spiders head.

11. To make the spiders eyes pipe a blob of chocolate icing on each white chocolate button and stick them to each head with butter icing.

12. Finally, place the spiders body on each of the cakes, unravel the liquorice wheels and cut into 1 ½ inch strips for the spiders legs, place 6 strips on each cake tucking the ends just under the spiders marshmallow body.

Natural health… Good night’s sleep

In typical ‘Wind in the Willows’ fashion this also tends to include more sleep. It makes sense that humans should take more rest and sleep during the darker months. Unfortunately a good night’s sleep can be somewhat elusive occasionally for everyone at one time or another. However for ever increasing numbers of the population it has become a constant problem.

So I have put together a few suggestions that can help.

Restless nights and short sleep patterns can be down to mental activity, varying from worry, anxiety, excitement and over stimulation to name but a few.

I would urge anyone who is having problems sleeping, to start taking some of the common sense steps. Caffeine is a notorious culprit, so obviously do not have any caffeinated drinks after 6.00 pm. Also be conscious of using the latter part of the evening as a winding down period. Avoid action or fear movies just before bedtime and relax more by listening to gentle music or reading. A walk out in the fresh air before bed can help to unwind if you have worries about forthcoming events.

Moving to the bedroom, in my opinion the television in the bedroom is a definite no. This should be sanctuary; a place of neutrality and peace. The ancient Chinese philosophers held that the bedroom should be for sleeping and love making only. A CD player to play gentle relaxing sounds or music on is very beneficial. The use of aromatherapy oils such as Lavender can have a calming effect. You can use an oil burner or a room/pillow spray. Crystals are reported to help and placing a piece of Rose Quartz under the pillow or beside the bed is said to re-balance your energy and aid relaxation.

If the problem is a pestered mind try Bach Flower Essence White Chestnut. Take a few drops in a glass of water, to be sipped occasionally until sleep occurs. If you awake and the anxiety returns, take a few drops of Rescue Remedy, another flower essence. In other cases over-stimulation and restlessness can be due to too much adrenalin in the blood stream. The homeopathic remedy Coffea will help to address this.

A common solution that many people tend to turn to for sleep is alcohol. Though this can certainly knock you out the effect is short lived and hardly beneficial! Aside from the obvious habit dependency factor it also tends to re-awaken you too soon with the necessary need for liquids and emptying of the bladder. If the problem is long term, then you really need to seek professional help from a qualified homeopath or other natural therapist, to examine more thoroughly any underlying causes that are aggravating sleep.

Finally a good old fashioned milky drink at bedtime is worth trying. I noticed that there is now a night time milk available which is claiming to be rich in Melatonin. This is the sleep hormone, so I for one will be giving that product a whirl and adding it to my Horlicks.

Wishing you all a good night’s sleep.

Ken Teppin (M.C.P.H)

The Passing Of Time

By Mike Payne

One of the things about being a local historian, or any historian for that matter, is that you are probably more keenly aware of the passing of time. The fact that you are continually receiving photos of buildings, people and places, means that you are often comparing the ‘then’ and ‘now’.

We, as a Heritage Group, keep a close eye on the development of the town of Princes Risborough, and although in many respects our High Street and Market Square has changed little over the years, when you analyse each of the shops and buildings there have been many changes. Take the shop next to Barclays Bank for instance, back in the 1950’s it was Whitmee’s the fishmonger. Since then it has been a number of different outlets and most recently a Tattoo Parlour, which, once my body had been covered in various designs, the loss of their best customer proved too much and it is now empty again. Most famously that shop also appeared as a magic shop in an episode of Morse for TV. There is a great scene of ‘Lewis’ (Kevin Whateley) coming out of the shop and crossing the road in that particular episode.

The old Co-op building is another that has seen many changes since it was built around 1958. The original building was divided into three units, a grocery store, an electrical store and a chemist. Since then lots of changes have been made and the good news is that we now

have two big names in WH Smith and Costa Coffee amongst the current residents. It does show you how developments happen and if you compare any photos of the High Street over the past 80 years, you will notice differences in each decade.

And when it comes to people, then obviously the changes are just as noticeable, if not more so. When our ‘Voices of Princes Risborough’ came out my wife and I themed one chapter on family life, and we featured the Attridge family of Ash Road. The photo we used featured all five of the children, and recently I was able to recreate that picture at a family gathering. As you can see from my ‘then and now’ picture, time has moved on. It is lovely to know though that the family are just as close now as they were all those years ago.

I find the change in people fascinating. Over the years I have been lucky in meeting many of my old football heroes, I remember them vividly from their playing days, and still have this mental picture of how they used to be. Now when I see them, 40 or so years later, I find it a little sad, but good to know that they are, in the main, still fit and well. And that applies to the local footballers too, as I continue to receive some amazing team photos of Risborough football from yesteryear. I am hoping to feature one in a future article.

Meanwhile the sand continues to pass through the little opening in the hourglass and we are all moving on, just like the town…

Podiatary at The Luxton Clinic

With Debby Luxton BSc (Hons) Registered Podiatrist

What is a FungalFoot Infection?Approximately 80% of the population will suffer from fungal foot infections at some time.

It tends to be more common in males and during the summer months when feet get hot and sweaty. Commonly it starts between the 4th and 5th toes and then spreads to the other web spaces.

It can also spread to the sole of the foot, or sometimes on top of the foot, causing a red, dry,

scaly rash.

It can also spread to the toenails and is characterised by a thickened nail with white/brown/yellow discolouring. The nail is fragile and splits easily.

What causes it?Fungal infections thrive in hot moist conditions so sweaty feet are a prime cause but also poor skin vitality or an impaired immunity.

What can I do?Treatments for fungal infections include topical creams or sprays.

However, there are some preventative measures you can take as well.

•Always dry well between your toes after a shower or bath.

•Wear cotton socks.•Don’t wear plastic/synthetic

shoes as they encourage a warm environment.

•Wear flip flops in a communal shower or pool side – fungal infections are contagious.

• Keep using topical cream for 2-3 months after the infection has cleared.

If you think you may have a fungal foot infection please contact our Registered Podiatrist, Debby Luxton, at The Luxton Clinic on 01844 352200 for further information or to make an appointment.

Apples - both dessert and cooking, Plums, Pears, Cherries, Greengages as well as a good choice of nuts such as Cob, Hazel and Walnut.- these trees can all go in now and will provide you with lots of home ground fruit for years to come.

As well as traditional ‘Bush’ fruit trees, we also stock Family Trees. This is an Apple tree with thee varieties on the one specimen. A great idea if space is limited.

We also have ‘Espalier’ and ‘Fan’ varieties - ideal to train up fences and walls.

Soft fruit bushes should also be planted now - Raspberries (we stock a number of varieties, so you can harvest from early Summer right through to mid September), Blackcurrants, Gooseberries, Blackberries etc are all looking superb. And no fruit garden is complete without easy to grow Rhubarb. One tip to remember is that if you want to grow Blueberries - they need an acid soil, so they will not perform well in our chalky/alkaline environment. Plant them in a good sized container using Ericaceous compost.

We stock a comprehensive range of fruit trees and bushes, but if there is a variety you are looking for, and we don’t currently have - do let us know and we will track it down for you.

To help your fruit tree get off to a flying start, we have top quality Tree compost, Bonemeal, Tree stakes and straps.

And don’t forget, we offer a FREE local delivery service - so you don’t have to worry about transporting trees in you car.

Askett Nurseries - Fruit Trees

Autumn is the traditional time to plant fruit trees and bushes, and we have a really fantastic selection to choose from.

Risborough Rangers Football ClubDid you know there is a thriving football club on your doorstep playing a good standard of football? The first team play in the Spartan South Midlands Division 2 (Step 7 of the non-league ladder) and are situated in Horsenden Lane, next to the cricket and tennis clubs. The facilities at our ground include a main stand holding 25 seats, a smaller stand holding approximately 10-15 people, a tea-bar, a clubhouse/bar and also, for a small fee, a match day programme on entry to the ground. We are very proud of our set-up and would like to invite the public to come and have a look and be impressed by what we are achieving. They play regular on a Saturday afternoon and when the first team play away, the reserves play at “Windsor’s” in the Spartan South Midlands Reserve League Division 1.

Also, the football club have a website if you need to find out any more information at: www.risboroughrangers.com

Horticultural Society

Our Annual Show was held as usual on the second Saturday of the Risboro` Festival. Entries in the floral and vegetable classes were down a little compared with recent years but that is hardly surprising given the odd weather patterns

this year. The domestic and craft classes were well supported. The show is as popular as ever with the public. We do not count those coming through the door but we think that numbers were up on last year. Our treasurer has still to reach a final conclusion but it seems likely that the Show made a modest profit thanks to the profits from the raffle and from the tearoom.

Risborough Community Centre NewsMaintenance WorkOver the coming months Colin Griggs, our maintenance man, will be carrying out some essential work throughout the Centre. Internally he will be sprucing up the paintwork with particular attention to the Carrington room. In recent weeks we have been trying to resolve the curtain problem in the main hall and hope that by removing the cord pulls on the lower curtains and replacing all the lost hooks and gliders we will make them easier to pull for all users and therefore less prone to damage. Externally we will be carrying out repairs to the windows, doors and woodwork to keep us secure and water tight for the coming year.

New audio systemFollowing a support grant from the Buckingham Foundation, work has commenced to install a new audio system throughout the community centre. The initial phase of installing the high level loudspeakers in the Main Hall was arranged to coincide with other maintenance work that necessitated the use of a hydraulic lift.

The new system includes a ‘loop’ which will benefi t visitors who use hearing aid. It is anticipated that the installation in the main hall will be completed within the next two to three weeks.

Risborough Rangers Girls FCLooking for PlayersRisborough Rangers Junior FC have two established girls teams at U10 and U12, playing fixtures weekly against local teams such as Chesham, Vale Reds, and Marlow in the Bucks Girls Football League.

Last season our young players not only played league games, they also enjoyed taking penalties at Wycombe Wanderers FC home games as well as playing in local 5 a-side tournaments, one of which our U10’s came runners up at Penn and Tylers!

We are looking for more players of all abilities (7-11 years) to add to our existing teams. Girls who like football and want to be part of a friendly and fun group and make new friends, should get involved and come to our first training session back after the summer break Saturday 10th September at 9.30am @ Wades Park. No experience required, no need to book just turn up. Qualified coaches will guarantee a new skill learnt each week!!
