DCNS is changing its name to Naval Group.

Naval Group states our ambition. Simple, international and intelligible in all languages, our new name shall enable us to increase our market reach and sustain the attractiveness of our brand.

Naval Group is a mark of the success of our strategic choices that in 2016 culminated in two events which speak volumes about our skills and our know-how. Firstly, our selection by Australia for its future submarine program - a decisive turning point in our internationalisation strategy - confirms our group’s place at the top table in naval defence worldwide. Meanwhile, the creation of our subsidiary specialised in marine renewable energy, together with our industrial and financial partners, strengthens our technological, industrial and commercial credibility on this new market.

Naval Group pays homage to our history, our heritage and to the 400 skills that are such a priceless asset to our company, having been handed down from generation to generation over nearly four centuries. Naval Group

designs, builds and maintains some of the world’s most advanced surface ships and submarines and has always proven itself able to adapt to the social and technological changes of its time.

Naval Group states our commitment. It makes our expertise and our vocation clear: to help safeguard the sovereign interests of the French Navy and of our partner countries, and to make the most of our naval skills in the energy sector. It pays homage to the pride and values of excellence which motivate and unite our employees, bringing them together around a powerful plan for the future.

Naval Group is a natural step in the major transformation our group has been going through since its change of status in 2003. With the commitment of our teams, we have the technical expertise to take on the most complex projects and keep costs under control. Extending beyond just naval architecture, our capacity to design and integrate combat systems, sensors and weapons on a single vessel and to make them operational in real-time sets

us apart from our rivals. Naval Group is unique today in offering integrated co-design of the combat system and platform, with the sole objective of guaranteeing technological superiority in combat.

With Naval Group, our name is changing but our commitment is not: that of our workforce of nearly 13,000 employees to work day in, day out, both to serve navies worldwide – by offering them vessels armed with the most high-performance weapons available – and to advance the industrial development of marine energy.

Although the first arsenals were created at the end of the 13th century, it is only with Cardinal Richelieu that a veritable French naval policy emerged in 1624, founding a sustainable fleet able to compete with the European powers. In 1631, he thus created the Ponant and Levant navies; the Toulon and Brest arsenals gradually took form, as did the Indret shipyard, and Compagnie des Indes was founded in Lorient.

Between 1669 and 1683, Colbert then his son Seignelay, continued the work undertaken by Richelieu and set up the administration of the merchant and fighting navies. In 1690, during the Battle of Béveziers, 100 vessels equipped with 80 canons each provided a demonstration of the firepower of France’s Royal Navy and the excellence of the arsenals and shipyards. These pre-industrial sites are the expression of the sovereign State and already bring together a record number of cutting-edge competencies, technologies and materials. They can also be considered as the social lungs of the cities, in which the work is handed down from father to son. The expertise of shipwrights is particularly sought after, followed by that of construction engineers.

The technological superiority of the French Navy shone once again during the American war of independence, where the frigate L’Hermione hit the mark. As revolutions, empires and restorations went by, the navy experienced mixed fortunes, and the arsenals were the mirror of this with their number and specialisations adjusting to the needs.

The industrial revolution was also a driver for the arsenals. It was a time of great inventions: the beginning of steam propulsion required, for example, the transformation of Indret’s foundry into a steam-engine factory; in 1845, the first prototype of a steel-clad wooden hull was built followed in 1858 by the construction of the world’s first ocean-going armoured ship, La Gloire. The propeller and the submarine both arrived at the same time. The experience of the Plongeur in 1863 is followed by that of the Gymnote in 1886 and the Narval in 1899, the world’s first operational combat submarines.

Naval Group and its 13,000 employees, spread across ten sites in France and eighteen countries around the world, are the heirs to 400 years of innovation illustrating the major technological, industrial and social milestones of naval history.

After the First World War, the navy was entirely rebuilt with priority given to speed and firepower. The decree of 1927 organised the arsenals and the Navy; the Front Populaire nationalised the weapons factories, thus bringing the Saint-Tropez site, specialised in torpedoes, under the State. The arsenals worked flat out up to the Second World War. But the conflict left the fleet, ports and arsenals in a pitiful state.

After the reconstruction, major projects for emblematic vessels were started, such as escort vessels or the two aircraft carriers – Le Clemenceau in 1959 and Le Foch in 1961. The great nuclear deterrent project was launched on the initiative of General de Gaulle. True to the culture of technical leadership, which has driven the naval-construction experts since the beginning, this project became their raison d’être. The launching of Le Redoutable in 1967 in Cherbourg, the first French nuclear-powered submarine, equipped with France’s first sea-launched nuclear missiles, is a real achievement, whose fiftieth anniversary we celebrate today.

Over the period 1970-1990, while the private shipyards all closed one after the other, the export market took over from national orders. DCN International was created in 1991 to deal directly with foreign navies while a reform took place through the separation of the specification and design activities from the industrial activities, all kept under State ownership. At the same time, the construction of La Fayette-type stealth frigates or the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier demonstrate the scope of France’s expertise.

In 2003, the transition into a public limited company marked the creation of the European naval-defence leader. The first landing helicopter dock, the Mistral, was delivered to the French Navy in 2006; in 2007, the group started the construction of the FREMM multimission frigates. The group confirmed its strategy: strengthening operational performance, forming a pillar of national sovereignty, developing on international markets and in marine renewable energy.

Today, Naval Group is proud of its rich heritage, shared

with its naval-sector partners. The group wants to extend

the reach of the expertise of its employees, who are

its guardians.

A crucial program for the group, delivering a sovereign submarine capability to Australia.

The SSBN, a masterpiece at the service of France’s sovereignty.

AUSTRALIAN FUTURE SUBMARINES SSBN

On 26 April 2016, following a 14-month Competitive Evaluation Process, the Australian Government selected Naval Group as its preferred international partner for the design of 12 future submarines for the Royal Australian Navy. The program, one of the largest defence programs in the country’s history, will provide Australia with a regionally superior submarine by bringing international experience and technology together with local capabilities to help Australia become an independent submarine nation.

The awarding of the contract was a result of a strong offering and teamwork between the French Authorities, Naval Group and industrial

partners. France and Australia have been allies for more than 100 years and Naval Group are committed to strengthening this time-honoured relationship and honouring the trust the Australian Commonwealth Government has placed in the organisation.

Naval Group is Australia’s international partner for the design and construction of Australia’s future submarines. Naval Group will work closely with Lockheed Martin Australia, the combat system’s integrator, and the Department of Defence to ensure the Future Submarines maintain Australia’s regional superiority.

Thanks to Naval Group, France belongs to the exclusive club of nations capable of designing ballistic missile nuclear submarines (SSBNs), the most complex system to build in the world. The group not only ensures the design and construction but also the maintenance and modernisation of SSBNs, one of the constituents of France’s strategic oceanic force. By renewing the credibility of the nuclear deterrent, the group bears the colours of French excellence far and wide. The secret? An infinite amount of expertise, probably unmatched anywhere else in the world, built up over four centuries.

Naval Group is the prime contractor of three generations of SSBNs. The group is performing the dismantling and deconstruction of first-generation SSBNs, the in-service support of

Triomphant-class SSBNs, and is already working on the detailed preliminary design of the third-generation SSBNs.

It is backed by a whole chain of excellent partners. Depending on the phase, the activity generates between 4,500 and 6,900 direct and indirect jobs per year.

Up to 2025, Naval Group will be responsible for over 50 Triomphant-class SSBN technical stops. The acceptance firing of the Triomphant, successfully passed in July 2016, represents a new step in the adaptation of the SSBNs to the M51 missile. The modernisation of the last of the three French SSBNs, Le Téméraire, was initiated in October 2016 at the Île Longue base.

50 YEARSOF PARTNERSHIPThe construction of the first submarine will commence from the early 2020s with the first of class due to enter into service in the early 2030s. Construction of the 12 submarines will extend into the late 2040s to early 2050s.

A major mid-life overhaul.

A new technological and industrial adventure at the service of the energy transition.

CHARLES DE GAULLE TIDAL TURBINES

The mid-life overhaul of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier represents a unique challenge for Naval Group: the availability and military effectiveness of the flagship of the French Navy depend on this work being carried out successfully.

In order to make this key vessel operational again and ensure it can meet the challenges of tomorrow’s aero-naval operations, Naval Group has only 18 months to complete its work. This involves modernising the combat system, the aviation installations and the platform but also carrying out more traditional maintenance of the ship. Meeting

these challenges will also benefit French industry, not only through the work generated – stimulating an entire job catchment area and sector of the economy – but also retaining key competencies, particularly in the nuclear and embarked aviation fields.

Naval Group has been preparing this project for over five years, in perfect synergy with the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA), Fleet Support (SSF) and the French Navy.

There is just one step between tidal currents and the generation of electrical power, and Naval Energies took this step in November 2016 with the connection to the grid of the first tidal turbine in the Bay of Fundy (Canada), providing power for several hundred residents of Nova Scotia.

It represents an important milestone in the development of tidal turbines, and a recognition of the work conducted since 2006 by OpenHydro, a subsidiary of Naval Energies, to optimise its turbine. Now a mature technology, the OpenHydro tidal turbine is being tested under actual conditions simultaneously in the Bay of Fundy and France, on EDF’s experimental Paimpol-Bréhat site.

These two technology-demonstration projects, conducted in very different marine environments, will allow the validation of the performance and stability of the tidal turbine.

Naval Energies and OpenHydro are currently in pole position on the promising tidal-turbine market, with the most technologically-advanced solution and a portfolio of international projects under development representing 950 MW, and covering in particular France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Japan and Indonesia.

A win-win program with Indian industries.

THE INDIAN SCORPÈNE®

On 24 November 2016, the Kalvari, a Scorpène®-class submarine built entirely in India for the Indian Navy, successfully completed its first dive to its maximum operating depth. The first ever Scorpène® to be entirely built through technology transfer, it embodies Naval Group’s capacity to conduct an international program in partnership with other local actors.

Since 2009, Naval Group has been supporting Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for the construction of the six submarines. In the Mumbai shipyard, Naval Group provides its technical support for construction and trains the MDL personnel in its know-how.

In close cooperation with the Indian Navy, the role of our Indian subsidiary in the program has rapidly been extended to the construction of submarine equipment, in line with the government’s “Make in India” policy. Naval Group is thus supporting the development of a healthy industrial ecosystem which should allow the Indian Navy to become independent. Today, as the construction of the vessels is nearing completion, MDL has acquired the technological and industrial know-how for the construction of submarines. A great success!

The first digital frigate.

BELH@RRA®

Designed for the French Navy as well as foreign navies, the BELH@RRA® frigate is Naval Group’s response to the demand for a heavily-armed intermediate-size frigate. This compact frigate can operate over a wide range, alone or integrated into a naval force.

Expected by the French Navy within a very short lead time, this first digital vessel has numerous advantages. BELH@RRA® comprises major digital innovations, from the on-board data centre to cybersecurity and i-maintenance. The management of the considerable data flows will also be ensured by the connected objects present on board the vessel.

BELH@RRA® has high-level military capacities in all areas: anti-submarine, anti-aircraft and anti-ship warfare, the capacity to conduct special operations and defend itself in all situations to counter asymmetric threats.

Another advantage of the vessel, which takes over from La Fayette-class frigates: its versatility, aimed at promoting export. It has been designed so that options can be offered without changing the overall design, according to a basic architecture around which speed, crew size, etc., can be tailored.

Naval Group is the only industrial group in the sector that masters the entire design, construction and maintenance chain for complex programs.

NAVAL GROUPA SHOWCASE OF

FRENCH EXCELLENCE

We design, build and maintain submarines and surface ships throughout their lifecycle. We integrate the critical equipment necessary for their engagement in operation theatres.

The particularly exacting demands of our activities call for highly specific industrial infrastructures and competencies, listed in 70 technical fields such as naval architecture, sheet-metal forming, pressure hull steel welding, nuclear safety, diving safety, etc. Maintaining and passing on design and construction expertise represents a permanent challenge for Naval Group. The predictive management of jobs and skills is an essential tool for anticipating our needs and, consequently, a lever for the development of our competitiveness.

The French excellence illustrated by Naval Group is also the result of the recognition of the company’s traditions, such as the passing on of expertise through peer training. To manage skills and jobs that are sometimes unique in the world, a significant part of the training system is reserved for this type of direct transmission of experience.

Finally, Naval Group could not maintain its leadership without the integration of new competencies, such as naval cybersecurity, data management or eco-design. Naval Group is committed to reducing the environmental footprint of its products throughout their lifecycle. We have the responsibility to anticipate the evolution of today’s skills to be able to adapt to the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow.

400 COMPETENCIES WITHIN NAVAL GROUP, INCLUDING 30 “ORPHAN” SKILLS i.e., without any other application in the civil domains or on export markets. For example, the group has 18 employees specialised in aircraft-carrier catapults.

4 FAMILIES OF PROFESSIONS are essential for the long-term sustainability of Naval Group and are monitored even more closely: nuclear propulsion, diving safety, submarine architecture and aviation installations.
