Queen’s Law, Together with the help of the LSS Core, LSS Council, and countless volunteers, we have accomplished quite a bit this year to improve the student life here at Queen’s! HIGHLIGHTS (THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS)

• Fall Reading Week! • First-Year Curriculum Review • Diversity Project • Ratified the LSSO! • Walk a Day In Her Shoes • Expanded Enrollment Consultation • Happyness Project now a province-wide ‘best practices’ model! • Course reviews available on-line • On-line Voting for LSS Elections

FULL LIST OF 2013-2014 INITIATIVES Mental Health Initiative: Represented Queen’s at a province-wide mental health conference to create new mental health resources for law students. I’m happy to report that Queen’s Law’s Happyness Project is the ‘best practices’ model to be used province-wide for a new inter-school peer support program! A website and a peer hotline are also being examined as potential options. Fall Reading Week: To be held during the week of Toronto in-firm interviews (usually the first week of November), as is standard practice at Osgoode and UofT. Policy on Re-Use of Exam Questions: Passed a policy at Faculty Board strongly discouraging verbatim re-use of exam questions, in response to an incident in the fall semester. This policy will be made available to all new sessional and faculty to be hired alongside the coming enrollment expansion. Walk a Day In Her Shoes: New yearly fundraiser run in conjunction with other Ontario Law Schools and the Women in Law Club here at Queen’s! Raised over $7000 for the White Ribbon Campaign and the Kingston Sexual Assault Centre. Course Reviews: The quantitative / multiple choice section of teaching reviews are now made available on QShare. However, professors have to opt-in to make this information public. REPORT OF THE LSS PRESIDENT | MARCH 25, 2014

LSS Elections: Implemented online voting through Moodle for most elections – still a few hiccups to be worked out with joint program reps and year council elections. Special thanks to Arielle Kaplan and Patti Evans for saving us a lot of money and time. Coffee in the Lounge: Free coffee, tea, bottled water, filtered water. We ran out of bottled water so that won’t be carried forward to next year. A schedule will be established next year to clean the fridge monthly and update the supplies. Organizational Rebranding: The LSS has a new logo and document template for both internal and external documents. We’re becoming more strict about documents that leave the organization as well as our branding on events that we sponsor, in order to have students know what we do. Smoker Policy: Amended the Smoker Policy to include equity and diversity considerations for clubs to take into account when planning locations, themes and marketing. Decided upon a process to rectify potential complaints that includes the feedback of the wronged parties in rectifying the issue. LSS Office & Institutional Memory: Repainted, threw out about 20 garbage bags worth (not exaggeration), cleaned out and purchased new furniture for the office. Ensured library had updated list of all those who had access to office (although at times, not implemented by library staff). Reviewed documents in office for tax auditing purposes and purged what we are no longer required to keep. Ensured website was up-to-date for clubs, student representatives, and Council minutes and documents. Equity Committee: Rename the Equity Committee the “Equity & Diversity Committee” for students to more broadly understand it’s mandate. Expanded Enrollment Consultation: Extensive consultation on expanded enrollment, with weekly Strategic Planning meetings (final Strategic Plan to come to Faculty Board on March 28th). Chaired Faculty Board Student Caucus meetings to discuss voting alongside the student body. Created report on student opinion to be circulated among students, faculty and staff. Diversity Project: Tasked the Equity Committee with a Diversity Project to examine how students from diverse backgrounds experience student life at Queen’s. They were to review a previously-conducted survey and suggest ideas for implementation during the next school year. Thanks to the Equity & Diversity Committee, Giovanna and Stephanie for making this happen.

First-Year Curriculum Review Committee: Struck an ad-hoc committee at Maxwell Radway’s initiative to review the first-year curriculum, with the results being used to affect changes in the Faculty’s strategic plan. Undergoing, but will hopefully have the result of standardizing the first-year small section & skills experience. Law Students Society of Ontario: Final ratification of an advocacy body I had an idea for in 2011! This year, many schools ratified, including ours. We struck an ad-hoc LSSO Committee to review the Law Students Society of Ontario prior to a referendum. Upon passing the referendum, the organization’s first conference was had at Queen’s. Special thanks to Ian Moore, Sean Coughlin and Allison Medjuck for their help in planning the conference, and congratulations to Allison for her election as Vice-President Internal (VPI) of the LSSO. Exam Massages: Collaborated with Trillium College to provide free massages during exams, and the Equity Committee to provide snacks during and after these massages! Faculty Board Grading Policy Review: Tasked the Faculty Board Academic Policies and Review Committee to discuss the grading of clinics and moots in relation to the grading of small seminars, with changes to be implemented in the fall semester. 2014-2015 CARRY-FORWARD

• Bring forward a LSSO Bylaw to develop our relationship with the organization. • Conduct a campaign to get professors to opt-in to publishing course reviews. • Ensure results of Diversity Project and 1L Curriculum Review are implemented. • Scan and store digital copies of all prior LSS documents to build on institutional

memory. All in all, I want to thank the LSS Core, LSS Council and LSS Committees for their help and assistance in all of the above. Queen’s student leaders are uniquely engaged in a culture that encourages volunteerism and dedication to the school. It was fantastic getting to know everyone, and thank you for the many opportunities that this position has given me. It has been my pleasure to serve as your President. Don’t stop believing,

Naheed Yaqubian President, Queen’s Law Students’ Society
