TASK 1Idea Generation and Research

Research & Idea GenerationNever miss a beat- Kassier Chiefs (2008)Idea one:Instillation styleUse colour and lighting Use of angles Fit the song rhythm to the motion of the video Occasionally have a silhouette band to create a playing illusion to keep the band concept and performance look Idea two:Have an endless storylineUse colour and lighting to create moods and atmosphere Low angles and pans will create dimension and shape to the video Fit the storyline to the beat and try match to some lyrics

Idea three:Have performance in black and white to give an indie look have the band playing in different locations in colour Using close ups on the artist to show their importance

Video 1 Circa Waves- T-shirt weather https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9z_cyIgE9s\- The artistic look of the video (the way the videos are projected onto the band) - close ups of the band and different angles of them playing - The use of the walls gives a split dimension to the video and almost gives it a sense of definition and organisation.- close-ups of the instruments been played- black and white with a colour look overlay

Video 2Circa Waves- T-shirt weatherhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBp8QwT4_R0&list=RDS9z_cyIgE9sMix between band performing and home style footage Different gradients and colour effects Still has the close ups of the artists and instruments Artistic style Camera angels still varied

Video 3 The Cranberries - Lingerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6Kspj3OO0s- very minimal and simple - a range of camera angles and movement - focused points throughout - very strong performances making it more powerful- All in Black and white, only different lighting to create emotion and depth -Smooth transitions between clips (looks overlay like)-Slight storyline but very self interpreting

Video 4The Crookes Afterglowhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-5-PVeWgIM- Uses a projection onto a blank screen -Very empty looking environment - Black and white minimalistic - Range of camera angels to show dynamic- Boy band video (close ups of artists and a lot of focus on the band, positioning of a boy band) - Story plays in the background whilst the band performs (different way of split viewing) -studio layout and style

Video 5 Holly Throsbys worldwide collaborative music video shot on Super 8 film spanning 37 years in 11 countrieshttp://www.thisiscolossal.com/2011/02/holly-throsby-what-i-thought-of-you/- filmed on a Super 8 Film (grainy and a lot of block colours, not a sharp look but more soft and a gentle finish)-Mix between artist singing and a montage look of different film footage -Random footage that does link together but is down to a lot of self interpretation rather then a chronic story - Different angles and camera work to give dimension to the video

Songs- The Las/ there she goes-The Lumineers - Ho Hey -The Crookes Afterglow-The Vaccines - If You Wanna-Citizen - The Night I Drove Alone

techniques- Different angels and camera movements - Close-ups of artists and instrument playing -Different types of filming -Long shots/ establishing shots - Different lighting situations for different parts

conventions- Film style - Low contrast (narrow tones, flat, dull) - Natural and Artificial lighting- Use of shadowing to create more shape- Very handheld looking -Mix between studio sharp look and the film style

Mind map of ideas [summary of ideas]Film footage Black and white/ minimalistic performance footage Projection onto the band performing Split/ montage of performance and footagePerformance in black and white Performance minimal (clothing, scene)Studio or big scale projection Low tones, block colours, simple, artistic glare

Summary

5 opportunities of your ideas:- Use different filming styles - Minimal but effective (self interpretation) - Can be really expressive - Stories through moving image - If done correctly it could have a really strong and well linked final piece

Summary

5 restrictions to your ideas:- Projection my not work on a large scale - Band members are not always reliable / available - Could look flat if it isnt done right (lighting and projection style, colours) - The short parts of film that I make might not fit together well - The style of video could be lost if not done right

Final idea artist/title/info- The Vaccines - If You Wanna - The Vaccines are a well known band who are an English indie rock band. They are from west London and they formed in 2010, since they have become a platinum selling band.Genre info- Indie rock is an alternative style band which originated in the 1980s They have the typical rock style but with an alternative independent twist with it making it its own genreIndie rock has a lot of sub genres within it which make the genre really diverse

Final idea track summaryThe vaccines if you wannahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQKjI6395iUThis song is a very upbeat song which is ranged between fast and slow pace, it is more medium- fast pace but there are points in which it is significantly faster and slower. The song duration is 2:54 in which 4 minutes at the end is just faded silence The style of the song is an alternative rock song which is very buoyant. The content of the song is very repetitive and the lyrics are very simple and minimal, a lot of the song is just repetitive. The meaning is very romance related, talking about how the person is saying that its alright if (the figure theyre singing about) comes back. It is an upbeat alternative love song.

Final idea your ideaThe idea of my music video is to create a indie style music video which is also quite instillation looking. The music video is going to have a performance look as well as a instillation video look to go with it. The performance is going to be in black and white in a studio, the look of the studio as well as the black and white creates a very simple but dynamic look that will contrast well with the other footage. This is also very indie and follows the style that I plan to make. I didnt want a narrative, clich story line in my music video and I didnt really want any style of narrative. This is just because I want the piece to have an independent vibe to it that the audience can digest and interpretive the piece however they want. I plan on filming this on a DSLR camera but knock all the settings to make the camera have a much lower quality (my camera HATES me for this) I then plan on filming it and editing in post production to finalise the look. I may download filters to add over it to give it a scratched look, but I will not download sound (unless its right at the end where there is silence) as it will just mix with the track too much. I will also have a section of my music video which will be the band playing and the c8 footage projecting onto them, again this will be in the studio and will bring the video together and will link the song more. As my genre is indie all of these ways and ideas really do back up the conventions and style of an indie music video.

TASK 2Pre-production Assessment

Title of production/production outlineI intend to make an indie style music video which uses the conventions of a indie music video as well as providing an original take on it. I plan to have a cut between an instillation style video of super 8 style footage which is typically low quality and then cutting to a sharp well recorded black and white performance of an indie band. The outcome is intended to be very old style with the cross of a sharp visual. The track that I have chose is very upbeat and has a happy feeling to it even though if you listen to the actual lyrics then you can hear that the song is not actually but it has such a strong happy pace to it. The song is very repetitive within the rhythm and the lyrics of the song. To produce this music video I will need a studio lighting set up for the performance part as well as a projector. I will also need a DSLR camera and a decent lenses that will focus well and give a good quality outcome. For the super8 footage I am using a Nixon DSLR and changing all of the settings on the camera so that I dont have to fix it in post production.

LocationsThe only location where the band will be performing/ presence is in a studio. I looked at a lot of different options for a studio as some of them just didnt look like they could work and didnt fit for what I wanted. I need a studio with lighting and a large white background. The studio I found is York Photography Studio. As I will be filming in a week day it will be 90 for a full day and if I film for two days it would be 180 for both days. The studio will be the recee as it will be the only location where the band is needed all at once so this will be the recce point for convenience. The risks with the studio work is the distance could be un- ideal for the actors and crew and could potentially become costly to get them there and back, this is something I would have to negotiate with them and clarify before any final decisions. The rest of the filming I will be doing is very random so it is not in a set location and the band are not needed for this footage. The risks with this footage is the weather, as some of the shots will be done outside and if it rains then there will be a set back in the filming. There is another risk within this as well, because it is just spontaneous footage there might be parts where I cant film due to permission issues. As I am just filming these alone there wont be an issue in distance and cost as it wont really require anything that I wouldnt be doing anyway.

EquipmentThe equipment I need is very simple and basic as a lot of my shots will be done in a studio. The studio that I have looked at to rent provides lighting facilities and this is the only time I will need lighting as it is for my professional shots. So I looked at https://www.hireacamera.com/en-gb/search/?categories=9&keyword=&startdate=&enddate which is a hire site so that I could hire the appropriate equipment to take with me to the studio to get the best look that I want. I firstly looked at cameras and looked at the Cannon EOS C300 (110 a day) and the Cannon EOS 5D MKII (64.00 a day) The 3C is a high performing camera which makes the footage really good and strong quality before editing starts to take place. The camera is very cinematic and makes a very clear outcome. This camera is very good for getting rid of additional noise and makes the image very sharp and clear. The only drawback with this camera is how the camera is a lot more bulky and heavy; however for the quality it is worth it and if the budget reaches then it will be a good option. The 5D has an ability to perform well in filming so that post production is much easier. The quality of the 5D is very strong and creates a very cinematic clear image. The 5D is a lot smaller then the C3 so makes it a lot more portable but still giving a very strong quality. The device is like a normal DSLR but provides much more then that, the only draw back is you have to add a small screen to it to make the filming between, meaning there will be a lot of wires which could be an issue other then that it is a good camera. Making it a really good option for film producing.

Equipment

Following on from the same site I looked into tripods and other accessories. I looked at a lot of lenses to try find one that would work as I just needed something very simple that can do the basics. I wont have a lot of zooming in to do or anything too complicated so this lens is ideal for the video. The lens is 26.00 a day. I also needed a memory card so I found a standard 32GB SD card so I looked to hire them and they are 11 a day which is quite a lot compared to a buying price and you can buy one for 9.98 so that would make more sense. The final accessory that I need is a tripod, this is something that is a necessity so I looked at two which are both of the same quality and will do what I need them to do the first one is an 6.00 a day one which is the Manfrotto tripod and the other one is 8.00 a day is a Velbon Basic Tripod.

26.00 per day

FacilitiesAfter producing a video you need to edit the video. To do this I looked at two different editing suite hires that I could use to edit the video. The first one I looked at is an AVID which is 175 per day or 700 per week as I would need to suit for four days so it would be the same price to hire for a week (175x4=700) this would be a good suite because it has what I need in it and it just a very basic suite. The other suite that I looked at is TANGRAM which is 200 a day or 800 a week which is 100 difference to the other suite, however this suite has a lot more equipment and provides a lot more software. This suite is still basic but it does seem to provide a lot more meaning the outcome could be a lot better. So if it is within the budget and do able then it will be a lot better then the other option.

PersonnelCREW: For my crew I could do with a camera worker to help whilst I direct. By doing this it will allow me to direct better and the filming to be more efficient. There are two ways I could do this. Professional: I could hire a professional camera crew/ member who could work the cameras for me. By doing this I would get a good professional job and also a good finish on the piece. The work will be a lot better if I get a professional in however it will be a lot more expensive doing it this way so if the budget and this is doable then it will be a very good thing to have. There are different people who have different rates by using https://www.peopleperhour.com/freelance/freelance+cameraman+rate I was able to find two options of people. The only other issue with hiring is having to pay transport and their other expenses. Friends: Another way of getting the crew is by using my friends who have some minimal experience with cameras. This would be much cheaper and I would only have to pay for their expenses and maybe bribe them a bit. This would be much more cost efficient if the budget was tight. However the quality will not be as good and it could go a lot worse if they are in charge of the camera. CAST: Professional: Again like the crew I could hire professional actors which could conduct the video well and give me a professional act which would look a lot better as they are trained to do what they have to do so they will be able to do the job well. However again it would be a lot more money and you have to pay for transport and expenditure. Amateur: A good option is Amateurs which are people who are at the same level and want to gain experience in what they do. These people are talented in what they do and have good experience so will give a professional outcome. However they wont have to be paid as much so you will only really pay for their expenses and give them credit and publicity. Friends: You could also use friends for casting. This may not look as professional as it will be the cheapest option. This could look really bad in a music video if they dont know how to play instruments or act as its key in the production.

Props/Costume/etc

Costumes: As for the costumes the cast will be wearing very casual and basic outfits. They can wear their jeans and shoes; however I will provide the T-shirts. This is because as the filming is over two days if someone doesnt wear the same shirt the next day then the shoot will need re-doing which will obviously cause issues. As the filming is in black and white the bottom half wont matter as much if they change jeans or something I will also get two actors to wear jackets and then get them to bring them back the next filming day I looked at http://www2.hm.com/en_gb/index.html for t-shirts and found a variety of options. As there is 4 band members I will need 4 shirts. I could use different styles like a long sleeve, a slouch fit and two regulars which would total 20.97 I could buy 4 individual regulars for 15.96 Or I could buy a 3 pack of mixed shirts and one different style 18.98 If it works with in the budget then I will probably go for the first combination as this way the styles will all be different but still basic meaning that there will be difference but minimal

Props/Costume/etcProps:

Buy:I could buy some really basic and cheap (second hand) this could be good as I could re use them and keep them as props. However it is very excessive and will probably be more expensive and there is no guarantee for re-using them so it is a bit excessive in the long run however still an expectable option. Borrow: I could also borrow the equipment from friends, and the people I use in the band. If they are apertures then they will have the instruments and a lot of my friends and contacts have instruments that I could borrow. This is a good method as it is free and doesnt need much, however people can often let you down and this is not a reliable method for something so large scale.Rent: Another option is I could rent them from a shop like http://www.bigfishrentals.co.uk/drums/ which is a rental site for music instruments. You can rent the instruments for 1-3 days which would be enough time making the method useable. This method is also really reliable as they are a company meaning they have a reputation. I feel like this is the best idea because they are good quality and they are a reliable source.

Codes of practice and regulationsDo you have performers external to your group performing? They will need release forms that declare you can use footage of them in the production. This needs to be planned for. I have a range of performers in my video who will all need declaration forms which I will provide before hand and they can return before filming. In the form it will include the right to film them and then use to footage. By doing this I will be able to have a guarantee with the rights of the performers. Do you have any actors under the age of 18? You will need parental permission forms.I will have two actors under the age of 18 so they will need parental permission forms. I will write up some parental forms for the actors so that they can get them signed so that they can feature in the video. Are you filming on private property? You will need written consent PRIOR to filming. Plan in advance. This needs to be considered.I will not be filming on private property however when I go out into the city to film footage I may end up wanting to film somewhere in which I will carry forms around and ask permission on the spot. This is very unlikely but if I have them anyway then I will have them just Incase. I am not planning on filming in any private locations. Consider where you may need specific risk assessments and health and safety documentationI will need a lot of risk assessments as I am using both a studio and also filming in public so there is a range of risks that could happen on both days which need to be assessed. An example is in the studio there is a lot of electrical hazards and a lot of risks regarding equipment and performers and in public there is risks of members of the public and the equipment and risks within the safety of performers.

Finance/Production CostsThe likely cost of my production to cover equipment, cast, crew, edit suites, locations and facilities is 1,509.95 In this video there is a range of costs that need to be covered such as equipment renting, locations, props (instrument) hiring, performers expenditure, costumes and the post production. The overall budget of this project is 2,000 which is to cover the whole of the expenditure. I put 200 of that to side money so that if anything went wrong then I would have budget to fix it. That then left me with 1,920. I ended up spending 1,509.95 leaving me with 290.00 left over and then the 200 side money so 490.00 total left over. With the left over money it means that I have something to fall back on if anything happens during production. Things like cast and location can not always be guaranteed on the day and could cause an issue within the production so if these happen I will overcome them by using the side money and fixing up the production.

Final budget breakdown and explanation I decided to come up with two options, one with a higher cost and one with a lower so that I could have an optional then I could finalize it in the middle if I went over budget, however I ended up not going over budget and I still had additional money as well as my side money. The first option was my most expensive version which means all of the equiptment

Equipment is a lot more higher class and better quality so will give me a better opportunity to produce a much higher level production. This option uses the best options I found within the budget range that are not only budget friendly but good quality. This was by far the best option as the use of the budget as it uses a lot of the budget but still has side money and the purchases have been good quality equipment meaning the best can be produced from the cost.

Production SchedulePre production week 1- Plan out ideas and concepts of the video, this is the brainstorm part of the process where I explore ideas and concepts which I can transform into my own thoughts and creativity. Pre production week 2-In week two of the pre production is when I started to pull it together. Having a plan of what I want to produce and how I want to produce it. So things like the safety forms, call sheets and casting so that you can produce the video (organizational planning)Day one of filming 22nd - Filming the instillation shots for the video Day two of filming 24th - Filming the studio shots in the studio Day 1 editing-Uploading and cutting footage Day 2 editing- Editing to the song Day 3 editing- Colour correcting Day 4 editing Final run through

Clearance and Permissions

As a lot of my footage is only In college and I already have permission for that I dont need to fill the form out for that.My other footage is pretty spontaneous footage and is not taken in a set location so what I will do is print some forms out and end up wanting to film somewhere I will ask the people to sign one before I proceed to film.

Permissions forms

Each actor will sign an agreement saying that they give me full permission on filming them and then using the footage. This means that I wont end up in a situation where people dont want me to film or use the footage .
