Fellow Members,

So much to do this month. I may just hide away. Our meeting on the 8th, with Autorama the next weekend and Sweethearts & Orphans in Granbury the third weekend just about eats up poor little February.

We continue to attract new members and welcome Terry Hitch, who happends to have a 1949 88 Deluxe Club Sedan. He and I may have some notes to share.

Please keep in mind our upcoming Zone Show, and that we need raffle items for that event. Any help is always highly appreciated.

We have a lot going on, and I’m looking forward to everything as more opportunities to spend time with beautiful pieces of history and my friends that own them and share them with us all.

Our February meeting is at El Fenix on Skillman. Come early so we can visit longer.

See you there, Mike

I bought these parts last fall for my ’70 442 project before my engine build took a different turn. All parts are new and unused. Call/email if interested. Silver thermal coating applied by Mondello.

January 2014 Monthly MeetingSunday, January 18, after a one week delay because the previous Sunday was pretty full, NTOC held the monthly meeting at Sonny Bryan’s Bar-B-Q on Campbell Rd. in Richardson. Presi-dent Mike Payton called the meeting to order at 2:00 and observed that there were no visitors, however there were 34 Club members present. Mike welcomed everyone and asked for the Treasurer’s report.

Treasurer’s Report Cindy gave an update on the club’s financial position and we continue to be financially sound.

Cindy announced that the current Helping Hands Fund is $1968.92 and all of the 2014 contribu-tions have been made and acknowledged.

Cindy then said that the D/FW Marriott had contacted her to thank NTOC for selecting them as the location for our Christmas Party in 2014 and said they would like for NTOC to return in December 2015. Discussion was held about selecting another location for 2015. Comments that the facility was very nice and the hotel staff responded to any requests, as well as provid-ing a separate meeting room for our business meeting before the dinner/party activity. Others thought the food served at dinner could be improved.

It was noted that the D/FW Marriott did provide rooms for anyone who wanted to stay overnight at a much reduced rate from their normal rate.

After the discussion it was decided that anyone who wanted to could search for a location that would provide the same features as the D/FW Marriott and propose a different location for the 2015 Christmas Party. Anyone who wanted to could present an alternative to the D/FW Marriott location at the February 8, 2015 monthly meeting. After any alternate presentations and discus-sion the members will vote to select a location.

Club Spirit ItemsDenim Shirts -Members requested that we get information about purchase of denim shirts with the NTOC logo on them. Only shirts that have been pre-paid will be ordered. The club will not stock an inventory of these shirts so if you are considering the purchase of a Denim Club Shirt you need to order them through Lois Liconte. The February meeting will be the last meeting before shirts are ordered. If you want to order a denim Club Shirt, but will not be able to make the Feb. 8 meeting contact Lois or one of the Club Officers to place your order. The denim shirt prices are as follows: $28.00 for Small thru XL and $30 for 2XL & 3XL prepay Lois or Cindy when you order.

Dallas AutoramaThis year NTOC will have six member cars representing the Oldsmobile Marque and NTOC. Entered in the Autorama are: Mike Payton, ’49 Olds, Matt Snyder, ’55 Super 88 Hardtop, Larry Florer, ’67 Delta Custom, John Bock, ’69 Toronado, Joe Munoz, ’72 442 convertible, and John Liconte, ’83 Hurst Olds. We do have two alternate hotels within ½ mile where the Hilton Gardens has helped to arrange for additional rooms for the April 17 & 18 weekend. They are the Best Western quoted prices of $84.99 and Holiday Inn Express quoted $89.99 & $99.99.

Plans are coming together for the weekend of April 17 & 18. Many from our group will drive down together on Friday arriving in the early afternoon, then after getting settled in join friends for social time and dinner. The Hospitality Room will be open Friday evening and there will probably be the usual group hanging out in the parking lot, just enjoying the evening. Security pairs start at 10:00 on Friday evening and again on Saturday evening at 10:00. If you can do a two hour security shift on one of the evenings contact Mike Payton.

Registration will end at 10:30 Saturday morning (exceptions can be for entrants who have a problem arriving by 10:30). Call to let us know you will be arriving late so we can hold a spot for you and so the judges will know you want your car judged.

Saturday morning Chris Dreiling will hold a judges training meeting. He will go over the judging rules with all judges and then begin judging as soon as registration closes. We always have some members who had never judged before and they will be assigned to a group with experienced judges. This provides an opportunity for new members to learn some of the judging methods that are used at the OCA Nationals. Take a little time at the Zone Show to get an up close and personal look at the cars that are on display. You won’t have to judge the entire car, just one or two specific features of the cars in the class you are assigned to.

After the judging is finished we will have the drawings for the raffle items, then another afternoon cruise through the back roads of the area led by Keith Sauls.

For Saturday evening Bob and Carol Ann have offered their hanger for the Dinner and Awards again. Note: We will need someone to help set up the tables and chairs on Saturday afternoon.

This dinner is $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for kids. When you pre-register please pay for the dinners at that time if you are going to eat. We will be accepting dinner reservations up through the end of registration on Saturday morning. Bob has the tables and chairs reserved.

Mark your calendars now to attend. April 17 & 18, 2015. Make your reservations at one of the alternate hotels soon.

Also, this year please consider joining in to help with Registration, the Raffle, Judging, Helping in the Hospitality Room, or taking a couple of hours Security on Friday or Saturday evening. Let one of the club officers know where you can help. The event is much more fun if you get involved.

RAFFLE ITEMS - Do you have any items that we can use in our Zone Show Raffle? They don’t have to be Oldsmobile, or even car related. Ladies gifts, something that one of your local busi-nesses will donate. Perhaps a dinner for two at a restaurant, an oil change, something from an

Bastrop Veterans Day Show is Return Option Bill Szelag contacted us and said the Bastrop Car Show went very well this past year. The Bastrop Area Cruisers again did much of the organization of the event. Bill hopes that NTOC members will again return to Bastrop to help make the event successful and for the Oldsmobile to be the most represented group. The 2015 event will be on the weekend of November 7 & 8 just before Veteran’s Day.

At the January meeting we discussed going to Bastrop or going to Fredericksburg again. The pros and cons of the events are that Fredericksburg is mostly free time and no effort to prepare the cars for judging. Friday night provides an opportunity to go to the Rock Box or just hang out. Mention was made that the Fredericksburg Inn needs major updating, however it is within walk-ing distance to downtown, has restricted parking area, and we can have the Saturday dinner and raffle in the clubhouse.

Bastrop offers a different location, a car show where everything is already organized for us. Bill is working with the hotels in the area to get good rates and secure parking. Also, this year there was a Friday evening cruise with traffic restricted to the cruise participants. We will have more discussion at the February meeting.

National Antique Olds Club (Reminder)Several NTOC members have expressed an interest in the National Antique Olds Club conven-tion in 2015. The event will be in Peoria, Illinois July 15 through July 19, 2015. Hotel reservations can be made by calling 309 698-3333 use reservation code is “AOC” (not NAOC.) Room rates are $109 but for only $10 more per night you can reserve a suite. Contact information and loca-tion. Holiday Inn & Suites 101 Holiday Dr. East Peoria, Il 61611 309-698-3333

I talked with Phil Fischer, who might have the best collection of 1929 Oldsmobiles in the coun-try. He has indicated that he is willing to provide a tour of his collection. Anyone who has seen his 1929 Phaeton will want to see the rest of his cars.

Member InformationJuju Nance has been having serious problems with her back. After some trips to the doctor and tests (MRI) she will be receiving a treatment that will hopefully relieve the serious pain she has been experiencing.

Lawrence Dagate has been having health problems and spent time in the hospital in December. After getting out of the hospital Lawrence hurt his back and now is battling back pain along with sciatic nerve problems. We are looking for Lawrence to be able to attend the February meeting.

Please keep both Juju and Lawrence in your payers.

gray color within a few years, as the coating ages, with the protective coating remaining in-tact. Cosmoline, especially, interacting with Parkerizing, can cause the greenish-gray patina to develop on firearms that are stored in armories.

Manganese and iron phosphating coatings are usually the thickest electrochemical conver-sion coatings, being thicker than electrochemical conversion coatings such as zinc phos-phating and bluing.

As for all electrochemical conversion coatings, the Parkerized surface must be completely covered with a light coating of oil to maximize corrosion and wear resistance, primarily through reducing wetting action and galvanic action. A heavy oil coating is unnecessary and undesirable for achieving a positive grip on Parkerized metal parts.

Alternatively, the Parkerized surface may be painted over with an epoxy or molybdenum finish for added wear resistance and self-lubricating properties.

Check it out. Gene

This article is about the historical phosphating process. For modern phosphating, see phosphate conversion coating. For the wine term, see Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Parkerizing, bonderizing, phosphating, or phosphatizing is a method of protecting a steel surface from corrosion and increasing its resistance to wear through the application of an electrochemical phosphate conversion coating. Parkerizing is usually considered to be an improved zinc or manganese phosphating process, and not to be an improved iron phos-phating process, although some use the term parkerizing as a generic term for applying phosphating (or phosphatizing) coatings that does include the iron phosphating process.

Parkerizing is commonly used on firearms as a more effective alternative to bluing, which is another electrochemical conversion coating that was developed earlier. It is also used extensively on automobiles to protect unfinished metal parts from corrosion.

The Parkerizing process cannot be used on non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, brass, or copper. It similarly cannot be applied to steels containing a large amount of nickel, or on stainless steel. Passivation can be used for protecting other metals.

Application

The process involves submerging the metal part into a phosphoric acid solution whose key ingredient is often zinc or manganese, with varying additional amounts of nitrates, chlo-rates, and copper. In one of the many processes that have been developed, the solution is heated to a temperature of 88–99°C (190–210°F) for a period ranging between 5 and 45 minutes. A stream of small bubbles is emitted from the metal part as the process takes place; when the bubbling stops, the process is complete. In addition to this particular pro-cessing temperature, there have also been various similar Parkerizing processes developed and patented that permit using either lower temperatures (for energy efficiency) or higher temperatures (for faster processing).

The Parkerizing reaction equation in a metal-phosphate-solution is as follows:

2 Fe(s) + Fe3+(aq) + 3 H3PO4-(aq) → 3 FePO4(s) + 3 H2(g)

Appearance and use

Zinc phosphating results in a non-reflective, light- to medium-gray finish. Manganese phos-phating produces a medium- to dark-gray or black finish. Iron phosphating produces a black or dark gray finish similar to manganese phosphating. The grain size of the zinc phosphating is usually the smallest among the three processes, providing a more appealing cosmetic appearance in many applications. Many firearms that are Parkerized turn to a light greenish-

NTOC Zone Show Judging InfoThis year’s zone show as with previous years will incorporate OCA style judging based on the 1000 point system. Cars will not be judged as stringent like a national event. This show is about having fun! Some rules still apply like a fire extinguisher, 3 items that promote the club OCA, or your local chapter (newsletters, OCA win-dow stickers, License plate frames, etc.) and 3 literature items pertaining to the car (sales brochures, owner’s manuals, etc).

This is a modified format from the national event and only 1st & 2nd place plaques will be handed out. There are special awards given too. To make the event a suc-cess we need volunteer judges to help Git’ er done! Please sign up and help.

Tech Talk:Do you have a project car that you can’t get started on? Is it developing some surface or even serious rust? I ran across some information that sounds like it might be the way to preserve what you have for future restoration. The product is Rust Mort and the process is Parkerizing. The Article below is from Wikipedia and there are more references to articles that address the types of materials where Rust Mort will work effectively. I have not tried this product, bur members of an on-line group I monitor swears by the process. I offer it for your information and investigation.
