Presidents Trumpet March 2018

Spring is in the air! The Dallas Autorama and Decatur Swap Meet mark the beginning of the auto event calendar for the year. It was great to see so many NTOC folks out enjoying and participating in these events. Upcoming events include:

• Goodguys 8th Spring Lone Star Nationals (Texas Motor Speedway) – 9 to 11 March• Greenville Swap Meet and Car Show – 5 April to 7 April• Big Country Swap Meet (Abilene, TX) – 30 March to 31 March• 11th Annual Heights Car Show (Richardson) – 7 April• Cars and Stars Car Show (Graham, TX) – 14 April• Pate Swap Meet (Texas Motor Speedway) – 27 to 30 April

Over the last year we have looked at the technological advances that have changed motoring and made technology more accessible to nearly all mankind. Sixty years ago it was unimaginable to envision a computer in one’s home. Today our smart phones have more computing power and memory than systems occupying large rooms back then. And yes they are indispensable! So put them to good use and add these events to your calendar.

We will be holding officer elections at our next meeting so if you are interested in serving, please let us know.

This year we are looking forward to our first Zone Show in Pottsboro and hoping to attract Olds owners from Oklahoma and beyond. See you at our 11 March meeting in Richardson at Sonny Bryan’s.

‘There’s a special feel in an Oldsmobile!’

February 2018 Monthly MeetingThe February 2018 NTOC monthly meeting was held February 11 at Sonny Bryans Bar-B-Q in Richardson. President Joe Munoz called the meeting to order at 2:03 and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. There were 29 members and no guests present. Joe welcomed everyone and said he is still working on articles for the OCA and NAOC magazines. He thanked Lois for the pictures she provided for his articles.

Club Membership Program The new business cards are available and were passed around during the meeting. John Bock took some to be handed out at AutoRama and several members took them so they could have cards available when they run into someone driving an Oldsmobile that might be interested in joining North Texas Olds Club.

Gary Thompson provided a summary of the calls he has made to previous NTOC members. Gary tried to contact 156 former NTOC members which covered a period of about 25 years. So far not many of the members Gary talked with have renewed their membership.

NTOC Member Dues IssuesGene reported that we have had 16 renewals based on the email reminders that were sent out. At the end of February Gene will send out reminder cards for all members whose membership expires at the end of March 2018. As of the end of February there are 63 members who will need to renew in March to remain on the roster.

There are 108 Family or Individual Memberships that renew in March 2018 or later.

79 of the 108 memberships expire in March of 2018.

Renewals are due by the first of April and the new “Active Member Roster” will be available at the May 2018 meeting. A copy of the new roster will be mailed to mem-bers who don’t attend the May 2018 meeting. Or you can request a soft copy to be emailed to you.

Dues beginning in March 2018 are $24.00 for one (1) year and $40.00 for two (2) years.

ALL MAILED MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS MUST GO TO CINDY PAYTON AT THE POST OFFICE BOX IN WAXAHACHIE.

Treasurer’s Report NTOC continues to be financially sound. The Helping Hands Fund currently is $270.00 that was raised through the 50/50 drawings at the December and January meetings. There was no 50/50 drawing at the February meeting.

Stewart also reported that he and Gayla have 9 more of the Oldsmobile Logo Throws to sell or use at upcoming fund raiser raffles. If you want to purchase one the price is $25.00.

NTOC Officers Policy ManualJoe reported that he would provide a copy of the Officer’s Policy Manual to the cur-rent officers for them to review. After their review is complete copies will be made available to the membership to determine if there are any recommended changes. Joe said that he didn’t think many changes were needed. Major item is deletion of OCA representative and addition of Activities Director. If there are recommended changes they will be presented to the membership for approval. Joe hopes to have the finished version available for the March meeting.

2018 NTOC Zone Show — Dates May 4, 5, 6, 2018 — !!! SEND IN YOUR ENTRY NOW !!!

Joe asked for an update on the 2018 NTOC Zone Show activities. Vince reported that the Judging Rules are complete and there are some changes in the classifications based on recommendations during the January meeting. There was a sample judging form in the February Rocket. Also in the February Rocket was a copy of the revised registration form that included the new judging classes. Vince said if you had used the original form to register he will work with you to be sure you are entered in the correct judging class. A copy of the Registration Form is in this Rocket. A full size form is avail-able to download from the website. Registrations are to be sent to Gene Crowdis, 404 Georgetown Dr. Richardson, TX 75081. Checks made out to NTOC.

Vince explained the new judging sheets. Each unmodified car will be judged as it would have been delivered off of the showroom floor with factory options. Cars will only be judged according to the options that are actually on the car on the day of judging. Modified cars will be judged on the quality of the modifications.

Cars will be judged against Judging Sheet listing: Values 1 – 4 points, per item. Cars are not compared to any other car, only the car and options as they are during judging. Basically the quality of the entry. Owner determines preferred entry category. Head Judge may reassign to another category based on his observations on day of judging. A revised version of the Registration Form is in this Rocket. All entries submitted using the previous form may submit a new form now or on the day of the show if they want to be reclassified.

1. “Factory Restored Concours”,” Factory unrestored Concours” and Modified Con-cours” categories – Entries judged for high level of restoration and preservation Driven or not driven

2. “Factory Restored Show”,” Factory unrestored Show” and Modified Show” cat-egories - Entries judged for their restoration and preservation but do not meet the requirement of driven 1000 miles or more in the previous 12 months.

Meeting Minutes (continued) Car ShowsHere is info on a local car show in April that was received at Autorama. I know a couple folks are already planning to go because the charity could use some support. I will be mentioning it at the next meeting. There is no full flyer on the web page and they handed out bookmark size ones.

2019 NAOC Joint event with NTOC Zone Show - June 2019 Joe asked for an update on the 2019 NAOC nationals planning. Harat and Troy were not at the meeting, but sent the update with Gene. Gene said we are keeping our options open regarding a tour of a historic or other Car Collection. Other tour op-tions under consideration are the Cavanaugh Flight Museum, the Frontiers of Flight Museum, and the School Book Depository, the Dallas Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, and Streetside Classics, Ft. Worth. If you have any information about a Car Museum or personal collection that might be a candidate please contact Harat with that informa-tion. Harat is also open to other suggestions for activities during the event. She is planning a committee meeting on March 17 to try to finalize the options so the Con-vention Planner we are working with can develop some costs and schedules. There is a committee scheduled to review and finalize the options.

Harat will be looking for NTOC members to participate in the organization, promo-tion, and support of the 2019 event, so if you are interested in participating be sure to let her know. Committee chairpersons will be meeting to work on details for each part of the combined event.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY – March

Leon Isbell — Ricardo Valenzuela — John Liconte

Ken’s CornerJoe discussed the advantages of making your restoration parts purchases from reli-able sources and planning parts purchases to avoid various shipping charges when you can buy at one time and have a single shipment. He also suggested that you plan your parts ordering around the time of year when companies are giving discounts or use Rock Auto who has a discount code to be used most of the time.

If you can’t find Oldsmobile parts that may be common to other GM A-Body parts check those sources for direct replacement versions.

Ken Freeman contacted me to let me know he has some ’70 to ’72 442/Cutlass parts to sell. Ken plans to attend the March meeting with some of the parts to see if there is any interest. He told me some parts are NOS and others are in very good “used” condition. If you are looking for spare parts for ’70 – ’72 you may want to attend the March meeting. If the parts don’t sell Ken will put them on eBay.

Meeting InfoMarch meeting will be March 11, 2:00 at Sonny Bryan’s Bar-B-Q on Campbell Road in Richardson. Come early for great food and social hour. We will elect officers for the next year at this meeting.

Meeting was adjourned by Joe at 3:20.

Respectfully submitted
