The image, although animated, still has its own characteristics. The image looks like some kind of art work which is appealing to the eye; it denotes as mosaics art work or sequin art work evoking a sense of class within the advert. The new album is called Day and Age which is ironic considering the image is what I assume to be night time as the moon is high in the sky with the Stars around. Age is represented in the album advert as The Killers usually have a young adult/teen audience and will engage them if they just heard the band name but the artist type style cover would appeal to an older audience because it appears to be more sophisticated. However the anonymity of the image suggests that the music is of a dance/club genre.

Guttenberg design principle

The advert is symmetrical as all the writing is in the middle, each sentence on each line gets smaller as it goes down the page. The primary optical area and the strong fallow area are the areas that draws the audience to the advert. They will see the bands name which is in big letters and a bright colour so it will appeal to fans. The weak fallow area and the terminal area are more darker with the words decreasing in size as it's just the general information which many people don't bother with. However the bigger typography is much more important informing audiences that the album is brand new peaking their interest.

The Killers Day and Age Album advert Analysis

Narrative Events and technical codes

There is narrative enigma as we don't know what the storyline is. We can assume from the day and age title that it is about maturity and life as their new single is ‘Human’ which questions life and us as humans. The words are all in caps apart from the band name which is also mosaic art like the background. The title day and age is ironic to the colour of the word as you associate day with light and brightness rather than the black colour it is. The word decrease in sizes as it goes down the page showing the decline in significance as you go down the page.

Setting

The setting is suggestive of glamour, the image looks almost crystallised because of therapy out of the tiles. However you see there is palm trees in the corner and make the assumption that it is a skyline view of desert at night time, which is ironic because the title of the album is ‘Day and age’. This could link to the desert because days are longer in the desert and the ageing recess could feel longer. The fact that it is a desert for a picture juxtaposes to the title as day and age don't really link to the desert; when you think of a desert you think of heat and death which differs to day and age. However one could link age to death because as you age your one step closer to dying.

Characters

Olly Murs is dressed casually but yet quite formal; he is wearing a white long sleeved t-shirt and formal grey pants with red suspenders. This could connote he is dressed to go out maybe dancing which would relate to his song 'dance with me tonight' which is on the album. A stereotypical representation of a male pop singer is represented as male singer usually dresses like this if they intend to impress a female. Most of this singer's songs are about him trying to get and/or impress a girl. He is stood quite relaxed with his hands in his pockets and has direct address as if he were trying to impress a female which is why he attracts more of female audience than a male one.

Guttenberg design principle

The advert is quite symmetrical as all the words are on one side cornering around the image of the artist. Your eyes are directed to the strong fallow area where the text starts so you know who the artist is and when their album is out. If the person is already a fan their eyes would be taken to the primary optical area where the image of the artist starts and they will immediately be enticed. The terminal optical area include all the information about what number one singles by the artist are in their and the convergent media address.

Narrative Events

The advert has narrative enigma, this is because you have no idea what he is going to do. The background is plain and his stood doing nothing but directly addressing the audience; which raises questions from the audience about what he is doing and where is he. The way he is stood just makes him look like a ‘typical guy’; hands in pockets back straight you could only assume he is doing nothing. If he were to dress differently in a tracksuit or a hoodie you would automatically suspect he is up to know good. However behave of the typography ne can assume by the 'Right Place, Right Time" title and the way he is dressed, that the narrative will be about love which is stereotypically what male pop singer's songs are about. The way he is stood could connote he is tracking his prey which would be a girl; he's stood trying to look confident trying to appeal the female eye.

Setting and Technical Codes

There is no actual setting to the image as it is just a pale blue background however there is high key lighting making him stand out as the lighting reflects of his shirt. The typography looks like it's been hand written adding to the love story effect making seem like a love letter. The image is a mid-long shot showing him standing in a casual stance making him look like he is trying to attract a mate trying to look good effortlessly so he can appeal to his target audience.

Characters

The woman has indirect mode of address and is looking down making her seem quite submissive. The way she is lay or stood looks quite promiscuous like she is trying to attract a suitor especially with the see through clothing she is wearing. Her stance can also be seen as peaceful or relaxing as when you think of lungs you think breathing and breathing is not just something that keeps people alive but if can be used to calm. You could say she is vulnerable as her lungs are exposed and in a normal human body the ribs would protect the lungs but the ribs are absent leaving her lungs exposed inferring vulnerability.

Iconography

The most conic thing on the advert is the fact her lungs are outside of her body. This was done to be ironic as the new album is called lungs and to actually show lungs outside of the body is quite facetious. The flowers could connote romance as that's what you would expect from this artist however it could just imply nature as the band is of an indie rock genre and they usually sing songs in a forest type area as well as studios. The advert itself is a pastiche of the medieval era as the way she is dressed and her hair style is almost folk like however it's a parody because of the way the lungs are out of her body and her clothes help all due to that.

Narrative Events and technical codes

Again we have narrative enigma as it is unclear what the album will be about. From the lungs you can assume it will be a bout living or breathing trying to stay calm as that's what lungs connote.

The low key lighting could suggest the narrative could be a dream type narrative as the image almost looks like a dream with the dim lighting and the sort of sepia look.

The typography is all in Caps apart from the band name which brands the band and emphasises the title of ‘lungs’. This informs the audience that the album is brand new engaging them as they would want to buy the new album.

Setting and Guttenberg design principle

It looks to be set in a Forrest type area which is where indie rock band tend to perform; usually on a field or grassy area. It makes sense for the woman to be in a forest type area as flowers are also seen as peaceful and are nice to breath in which links to lungs as you breath in the scents which would calm one down. The terminal area and the strong fallow area draw you in by presenting the bands name at the top in big letters and the weak fallow area and the terminal area present the information fans will want to know about the new album. The page is quite symmetrical because the word Lungs is central under image and then the word underneath are central too which is parallel to her body as they alone with her torso. The fact her head tilts to the side breaks the symmetry as everything was in aligned but her head.
