Commodore’s Comments Welcome to our summer season! Since May 1, your membership committee has been hard at work signing up new summer members. At the time of this writing, we’ve signed up 21 families and we’re looking forward to signing up more in June. For Wednesday, the 4th of July, we look forward to seeing you poolside for frolicking fun, dancing to the DJ,

eating the delicious buffet prepared by Chef Josh, and for viewing the fireworks, either at the Club in the Sunset Room or on the beach, later in the evening. A long-time summer tradition for VYC is hosting the Venice Theatre Summer Stock for the July Ladies’ Luncheon. You don’t want to miss seeing the VT Summer Stock performing a vignette from “Into the Woods,” hosted by Doris Guba and Polly Skinner on Friday, July 13. Tammy and P/C Kerry Carper and Cora Wright have an exciting evening planned for the Light Up the Night Party on Saturday, July 21, featuring the Big Night Out dance band. Big Night Out is a six-piece tropical style dance band from Sarasota featuring Tropical, Latin, Motown and Funk dance music. Light up the night means lots of specialty lighting to enhance the look and feel of the evening. Plan to join us for an evening of delicious food, and lively entertainment with rockin' horns, a pulsating percussion and great vocals.

I would like to thank all of the members who came to the Club on Sunday, May 27, to take part in the Blessing of the Fleet at the Docks (officiated by our Fleet Chaplain Chris Gray) and the Retreat Ceremony held in the clubhouse. The International Order of the Blue Gavel (IOBG), led by P/C Melinda Short, held the retreat ceremony that recognized members who had passed this year. Our fellow member Tamara Graham sang a very moving rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.” I would also like to thank our Fleet Captain Team (Lloyd Abbot, Bill Gately, Bob Eppinger and Steve Johnson) for planning our Blessing of the Fleet Parade. Even though Alberto prevented us from having that event, many hours were spent in preparation. We now have a great plan put together, that can be used for years to come. On a final note, our Fleet Captain Team also put together an outstanding event focused on Boat Safety on May 16 with the Venice Fire Department. The program covered an introduction to CPR, proper steps in operating a fire extinguisher, man overboard rescue procedures and an introduction to the VFD fire boat. Unfortunately, the event was lightly attended by our membership. We’re looking at having this event in the fall so our snowbirds can attend. Keep your eyes open for future announcements on this wonderful event.See you at the Club. Gus Olson, Commodore

Manager’s Column Last month, I shared with you

the timeline for the various projects scheduled for this summer. At this point, we are still on schedule. I am now able to give you a date for the resurfacing of the parking lot. That work will begin on Thursday, September 13, and finish by Monday, the 17th. This is in time for our reopening on Wednesday, September 19. This is a big project involving the

removal of the old top surface and replacing it with new and then restriping, etc. Should look great when it is finished. The revised 2018 VYC Rosters should be finished and ready for pickup from Sue at the front desk. Sorry for the delay. The Fourth of July is one of our top five busiest days of the year. Hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative than it was with Memorial Day. We do ask that you please call ahead and make a reservation. This is NOT for the purpose of saving you a specific seat or table. It is simply to give us some idea of how many guests to expect so we can staff appropriately and purchase and prepare food adequately.

Also, we will not be accepting credit cards that day. Once again this year, we will be closing for two weeks starting the day after Labor Day. We will reopen for business as usual on Wednesday, September 19. This allows us to do some big projects we cannot do while the Club is open. This year, in addition to the resurfacing of the parking lot, we plan to replace the insulation around the duct work for the Main Dining Room and maybe the Main Bar and have the pavers professionally cleaned and resealed. We also clean every chair and all of the carpeting. We inventory flatware, china and glassware so we can order replacements to get ready for the coming season. While we are closed, please take advantage of the multiple other clubs that have reciprocal arrangements with us. If you need info on those clubs give us a call. Finally, please call ahead for reservations whenever you plan to dine at the Club. This simply allows us to be better prepared to take care of you when you arrive. Also, if you need to have a meeting at the Club...same thing, please call ahead. Fair winds and following seas.Jerry Clemens, Club Manager

Last month, the Currents featured the Cruising Fleet on the cover. Now it’s time to salute the VYC Wine Club, a group of 120 members who know how to have a good time sharing their love of wine. Locally, they enjoy wine tastings, winemaker events, and their signature “Sipping at Sunset” gatherings. Plus, they venture as a group to California for wine tours. Along with tasting fine wines, these oenophiles lend support to the VYC Charitable Foundation, and they contribute items to the Club such as glassware, dinnerware, wine coolers, and tiki tables and chairs. The Wine Club has devised its own burgee and recently unfurled it and the VYC burgee at some California wineries. When you see these members at the Club, be sure to ask them about their activities. Membership in the group opens each January. Contact P/C Bob Piel at 497-2719 for details.

Message from the Fleet Captain Sail We are on Cape Cod now, June 1, 2018, after a very moving Memorial Ceremony last Sunday at the Yacht Club. We lost a sailing buddy this past year, who was appropriately commemorated. However, others lost so much more. I was happy to learn that Commodore Olson had rescheduled for the following

weekend the on-the-water Wreath Ceremony in honor of our departed Yacht Club members. I was there in spirit while my boat, S/V Fruition, participated under the very able command of her crew.

On the sunny drive home from that Memorial Ceremony, as I worried what I would write about this month, there appeared a rainbow in the clouds off to the east. I could see that there were only seven colors in that rainbow, but look at what else God has done with them (left).

After seeing that rainbow and discovering the above photo, I realized there is nothing important that I could say this month, so I decided to let others say it for me:

☺Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud. ~ Maya Angelou☺Don't be yourself — be someone nicer.☺Never miss an opportunity to make others happy, even if you must leave them alone in order to do it.☺Today I bent the truth to be kind, and I have no regret, for I

am far surer of what is kind than I am of what is true. ~ Robert Brault☺Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the

only sunshine he or she sees all day.☺Love your enemies. It will confuse them greatly.☺Never look down on anyone unless you are helping them up.☺By swallowing evil words unsaid, no one has ever harmed

his stomach. ~ Winston Churchill☺Don't wait for people to be friendly. Show them how. ~ Henry James☺It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.☺We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice

as much as we speak. ~ Epictetus☺You are not judged by the height you have risen, but from the

depth you have climbed. ~ Frederick Douglass

And in case the scurvy crew of Fruition thinks that I may be losing my touch, let me add the following quote:

☺Beer is God’s way of letting us know that He loves us and He wants us to be happy. ~ Benjamin Franklin

Happy Fourth of July!Bill Gately, Fleet Captain Sail

Message from the Fleet Captain PowerBoating Safety – Our inaugural Boating Safety Field Day was conducted in May by the Venice Fire Department, and provided a rare and valuable opportunity to experience “hands on” training in fighting boat fires, retrieving a person from the water, administering “hands only” CPR, and taking a ride in the

Department’s magnificent new fire boat, complete with a demonstration of its firefighting capabilities. Photos of all activities may be viewed at the Cruisers’ Corner of the VYC website. A survey will be conducted to gauge interest in offering another safety field day in the fall. Look for details in upcoming editions of the Currents.Summer Cruising – As you know, the summer months afford a great opportunity for “freestyle” cruises to destinations near and far. The process is simple: decide on an itinerary, invite friends if you so desire, and go for it!! The Fleet Captain Team would appreciate receiving a short trip report and a few photos which will be posted on the Cruisers’ Corner for the benefit and enjoyment of your fellow cruisers.Nautical Trivia – Congratulations to Joan Bowen, who provided an excellent description of “Roapyarn Sunday,” (the summary displayed in the left column of this page).Question for July: Name the masts of a seven masted ship from bow to stern.E-mail responses to me at [email protected] by July 4. Names of members providing the best responses will be announced in the August edition of the Currents.Be safe out there, and we’ll see you on the water!!Lloyd Abbot, Fleet Captain Power

South Seas Island Resort

Nautical Trivia Answer Congratulations to Joan Bowen, who provided the following outstanding, slightly edited response for June’s term, "Ropeyarn Sunday.” It was the day the tailor boarded the sailing ship in port and the crew knocked off early, broke out rope yarn, and mended clothes and hammocks. It usually occurred on Wednesday, and was much like a current day Sunday, allowing an afternoon of rest from usual chores, thus dubbed "rope yarn Sunday.” Today the uniforms require less attention and rope yarn Sunday has been changed to liberty or time to catch up on sleep.

Summer 2018… For the VYCCF there is no “time off”-- just another season to chart a course to a better community!

While most of us think about summer in Venice as a slower and quieter time on the Gulf Coast, I would ask you to “think again.” At the halfway point of 2018, your generosity and our Foundation Grants are swinging into action to ensure there is no “down time” in caring. Here are some examples:• In our Spring Grant Cycle, we provided a grant to the All Faiths Food Bank Summer Lunch Program. The local goal is to feed 40,000 young people who lose their school lunch programs the last day of school. Much of this food will be delivered in the Sprout Truck that our Foundation helped to fund three years ago. • A Spring Grant to the SKY Family YMCA provides scholarships to young families as the Y embarks on the Sunshine Education Academy. Approximately 250 children of working families that are financially at risk will receive safe day care, educational enrichment to improve their readiness for the new school year, and nutritious breakfasts and lunches so that hunger is not an inhibitor to learning and thriving. Without this ground-breaking program, young working parents would be unable to afford a safe, nurturing environment while they work. • Working with the Boys and Girls Club of Venice we are providing 10 youth sailing scholarships for use at the VYBA. Without these scholarships, the valuable lessons of teamwork, leadership, and sailing life-skills would be out of their reach financially. We often lament the loss of character building moments for our youth, but with opportunities like this, we take a positive step forward.

• Teaming with the Venice Art Center, young people nominated by the Venice area schools will attend art classes this summer. Our scholarship grant removes financial barriers to the visual arts and who knows, we may be sponsoring the next Monet. This is just a sample of the never-ending impact your generosity provides through our Foundation. I hope you all have a wonderfully rewarding summer.Respectfully submitted, Don Healy, Chair

Venice Theatre will perform a short preview of its 2018 Summer Stock production of Stephen Sondheim’s INTO THE WOODS. Summer Stock is a musical theatre “boot camp” geared to high school and college students planning to move into the professional world of theatre.

From Director/Choreographer Brad Wages: "And they all lived happily ever after!"

Or, did they?

INTO THE WOODS, by Stephen Sondheim, introduces the audience to some of the most beloved fairy tale characters of all time including Cinderella, the Prince, Little Red Riding Hood, the Wolf, Jack and the Giant, and many more. Throughout the first act, we witness their innermost dreams and aspirations as their lives are entangled in the woods. Each seems to get their wish for happiness. However, in the brilliant second act, reality hits. Lies, deceit, infidelity, murder, and self-preservation are some of the themes and events that our fairy tale characters encounter. True life lessons are explored and evaluated in both the humorous and haunting melodies of Sondheim's music. Winner of numerous Tony Awards and made into a hit movie, INTO THE WOODS is a playful, colorful, and thought-provoking look at the price of "Happily Ever After.”

The May meeting at Harbour Ridge

Yacht and Country Club was called to order by Commodore George O’Malley. March meeting minutes were approved. Roll call was taken and 34 of 36 Clubs were in attendance.

Committee Reports: Government Affairs—There has been substantial media attention and concern regarding recent Florida East Coast Railway and Brightline high-speed railway deaths. However, it was concluded that more than 23% were due to suicide. The E15 regulations moving through EPA, based upon the Clean Air Act legislation, cite concerns over the negative impact on smaller engines as ethanol has a corrosive effect. Two-stroke engines also run hotter with ethanol. Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel now conduct safety inspections; decals are now valid for five years. Fleet Captain East/West--Numerous clubs are now requiring proof of insurance for transient vessels, so best practice is to carry proof, always have your member club ID card available, and call ahead. Hurricane Preparedness Manuals were given out to all Directors. Speaker David Wilbur, Jr., CPCU, of InsurPro and P/C of Pelican YC, addressed the unique insurance exposures for yacht clubs. If you are interested, I can provide additional copies. The second speaker was Mark Perry from the Florida Oceanographic Society. He gave an interesting presentation about Florida waters, restoration, and flow. Additional information is available at www.floridaocean.org Club Updates:• St. Charles YC- Construction of Floating Docks is finished.• Eau Gallie YC- Outdoor Facility will be rebuilt in August.• Smyrna YC- Clubhouse and Tiki have been completed, 27 outer docks will be rebuilt in August.

Next Meeting is at Carlouel YC, Clearwater, on July 20-22.

Capt. "Turk" Hemseri, FCYC Director Phone: 445-2050

On behalf of the International Order of the Blue Gavel (IOBG), I would like to thank the VYC membership for supporting our 50/50 raffle at the Derby de Mayo party. The winner of the raffle was Nancy Zinn. Nancy has been a member for 31 years and has the honor of being 100 years old. The dollar amount she received was $722.50. Standing next to Nancy is her caregiver, Clare.

A total of $722.50, the balance of the proceeds, was awarded to Chef Josh and the Venice Yacht Club to be used to purchase new serving plates for use at the Club. Respectfully submitted: P/C Melinda Short, President of IOBG, Venice Chapter

Hints from the Hostess:

July 4th Celebration is near. We are not reserving tables for the 4th, but we do want folks to call to tell us they're coming. It helps Chef Josh estimate food requirements and ensures we have staff to provide you the best service.
