But now, that meal program is in danger, said Dining Room director Ann Budde. She is also treasurer for the local Saint Vincent de Paul Society, which runs the program. Budde said a grant paying for the five or six part-time workers who keep the meal program running five days a week expires today. That grant amounted to roughly $35,000 to $38,000 a year, she estimat- ed, and was administered through Tri- County Community Action Partnership. The source of the grant — whether federal, state or other — was unclear as of Wednesday. According to Budde, the fiscal con- cerns plaguing virtually every enterprise — public, private or charitable — are the culprits. She explained that volunteers also help run the dining room, located in the Saint Teresa basement. It serves meals Monday through Fri- day, from noon to 1 p.m. Budde said the program has recently averaged 124 meals a day. The proposed seven-tenths increase will be introduced as an amendment to the budget at the City Commis- sioners meeting on Oct. 19, according to Vice Mayor Joe Derella. The public hearing on the budget will be held the same night. The increase comes out to about $9 on every home assessed at $127,000, which is the average in Millville. “All of us are definitely disappointed,” Derella said. “There was a lot of debate, sacrifice and emotion, and to have this change come at beyond the last minute is disappointing and frustrating.” The five city commissioners went to great lengths to ensure there would be no tax increase for the 2011 budget, including furloughs, reduced work weeks for city employees and virtually no city-sponsored recreation this past summer. At first, it seemed they would be able to follow through with their pledge; then came the announcement from the state on Friday concerning pensions. The city had prepared itself for what it was told would be the worst case scenario: An 18 percent increase for police and fire, and a 14 percent increase for public employees. Instead, it was hit with a 22 percent increase for both, leaving it with an unofficial number of $132,000 to Millville is hit with 7/10 of a cent tax increase (See MILLVILLE, Page A-8) By Jason Laday [email protected] BRIDGETON — Authori- ties are searching for one of two South Woods State Prison inmates who escaped from their minimum-security units over the weekend.
