Co-op Eligibility for the Winter recruitment has been determined and those individuals who (according to my records) have not met the criteria have been emailed.

If you received an email and feel this is in error, you need to see me personally immediately to seek a fix. I will not deal with this issue via email nor telephone.

FACEBOOK: Most companies have Facebook pages that you can follow!

LinkedIn: How to Use LinkedIn to Find a Job

• Create a Profile. Here are tips for creating a profile on LinkedIn.• Consider a Photo. You can add a photo (a headshot is recommended) to your

LinkedIn profile. • Keywords and Skills. Include all your resume keywords and skills in your

profile, so your profile will be found.• Build Your Network. Connect with other members and build your network.

The more connections you have, the more opportunities you • Search Jobs. Use the job search section to find job listings.• Join Relevant GROUPS…(like Institute of Power Engineers!)

3. Social Media

4. BROADEN your SEARCH to INCREASE your ODDS

“If you are only concentrating on SARNIA, you must realize that the odds of employment in your field will be greatly limited, and there is a high probability you will not be

successful”

5. Steam Time Issues VOLUNTEER???

This sluggish economy may require short term sacrifice for long term gain...

• For the right position, consider volunteering at a company

• Gets you excellent exposure to a company and demonstrates initiative and commitment to your chosen profession

• Could lead to future paid opportunities if you perform well

• Lambton College can provide WSIB insurance coverage & liability insurance for unpaid work terms with Ontario employers.

Reality Check!• We have maintained a 100% success rate in students securing co-

op in the PETC program (between the two opportunities); HOWEVER, it is important to note that approximately 80-90% of the PETC co-ops are volunteer and outside of the Sarnia/Lambton area

• To take part in the 3rd Class portion of the PETC program, the TSSA has said that only CERTIFIED 4TH CLASS POWER ENGINEERS will be allowed to continue into the 4th, 5th & 6th terms of the PETC program.

• You cannot become a certified 4th Class Power Engineer without the additional 3 months industry steam time therefore co-op is essential.

• You must do whatever you have to do to secure that steam time!!!

Page 25: PETC Co-op Getting Started & Active Job SearchWorkshop 2015S Co-op Term Presented by: Patti Helps

Reality Check!Be aware of your competition

• All Power Engineering programs across Ontario are searching for the same steam time opportunities as you. You need to beat them to the opportunity! – DO NOT DELAY!

• With the decrease in the price of the barrel of oil, CPET opportunities are scarce. Soon they will be trying to get a volunteer steam time opportunity. You need to secure yours before they flood the market. – DO NOT DELAY!
