..Building Your Personal Brand

Tom Peters, who coined the phrase in his first company article "TheBrand Called You", had this to say:

"You're every bit as much a brand as Nike, Coke, Pepsi or the BodyShop. Thinking like your own favorite brand manager, ask yourself the samequestion the brand managers at Nike, Cole, Pepsi or the Body Shop askthemselves: What is it that my product or service does that makes it different?

• We are CEO's of our own companies: Me Inc. Create a message and a strategy topromote the brand called "You".

• Another personal branding pioneer William Arruda, founder of Reach PersonalBranding, says "Your brand resides in the hearts and minds of those around you."

Personal Branding II – Executive Presence

Page 12: Personal Branding II: Improve Your Presence to Stand-Out

“Many individuals are learning the importance of personal branding and creating a presence that they can take with them to any organization. Individuals with executive presence carry that ability to inspire others with them from one organization to another, regardless of their level or the structure of the organization. Additionally, current and emerging trends in the workforce, including mobile technology and virtual workplaces, are creating new spaces for leaders to be seen and heard. Leaders must now be able to communicate effectively via LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Skype, Google Hangout, and video conferencing in addition to traditional workplaces.”

..Can Anyone Have Executive Presence?

Colleen Douglass

“Those with a high level of confidence are empathetic, inclusive, and focused on others. They don’t come across as arrogant, empty, or full of themselves. They are simply confident in their ability to serve others and able to get out of their own way so that others shine. They don’t command attention; rather others are drawn to them.”

• Self Discovery can help you to better assess your strengths and your unique selling points.

• Here are some branding questions you can reflect on to begin to understand your current level of executive presence:

o What are you confident that you do really well?o What do you do differently than others?o What is your passion? Have you inspired others?o What do others say about you?

• After considering the current state, now consider where youstand on the Three P’s of Executive Presence: Personality,Positioning and Promotion.

Personality

• You can refine certain aspects of your personality to build your level ofexecutive presence. Think about areas that can be improved, including:

• Appearance & Style – Visual cues are the first things we take in, and first impressions count!

• Listening Skills – Hone your ability to actively listen and allow others to speak.

• Energy & Vibe –Your energy has to be authentic or others will not trust you.

• Empathy & Interest in Others – Show vulnerability. Pay attention to “soft people data” and rely on your intuition as well as facts.

• Public Speaking & Body Language – Practice to improve your voice, tone, and pitch and to make sure you are open, welcoming, and confident.

Positioning

• Are you positioning yourself as a leader with executive presence? Create a Personal Branding Statement = Elevator Speech

• Are you networking with both senior and junior connections? Are you mentoring and do you have a mentor?

• Are you volunteering? (See the book “Give and Take” by Adam Grant for more on this topic.)

• Do you have a personal website? Workfolio can be used to set up your own website quickly and easily.

• All of these things: your branding language and digital presence, mutually beneficial networking strategies, and giving back can all enhance your executive presence.

Promotion

How are you delivering on your positioning/branding statement and establishing yourself as a leader with high executive presence?

• Think about whom you are serving and what their needs are. Be outwardly focused.

• Write out your accomplishments in CAR (Challenge - Action - Result) stories. Knowing these CAR stories will allow you to efficiently demonstrate your value proposition and your unique selling points. CAR = SOAR

• Write your personal commercial (Elevator Speech) and refine your verbal messages.

• A good story has a beginning, middle, and an end. Weave your message into your stories and leave them wanting more.

• Executive Presence is more than branding, more than just a buzzword. It’s a concept that can be learned and leveraged to advance your career!
