For years, the intersections of Military Road and Concert Boulevard with Prince George Drive have been listed as infamous smash-and-grab locations. Motorists, most often delivery truck driv- ers, have fallen prey to opportunistic thieves who allegedly track their vehicles from one intersection to the other. “They target motorists who are ignorant and negligent,” says Seawinds resident Abel Jephta. “When the motorists leave something val- uable in their view, they pounce. A sign alerting road-users that they are in a smash-and-grab hotspot was erected by the City of Cape Town’s roads department fol- lowing a request to ward 68 councillor, Mari- ta Petersen. Two greater Retreat intersections re-main notorious smash-and-grabhotspots along Prince George Drive.

And residents are threatening vigilanteaction if culprits continue terrorising tar-geting motorists at the crossings.

For years, the intersections of MilitaryRoad and Concert Boulevard with PrinceGeorge Drive have been listed as infamoussmash-and-grab locations.

Motorists, most often delivery truck driv-ers, have fallen prey to opportunistic thieveswho allegedly track their vehicles from oneintersection to the other.

“They target motorists who are ignorantand negligent,” says Seawinds resident AbelJephta.

“When the motorists leave something val-uable in their view, they pounce. It all hap-pens very quickly. I have seen it countlesstimes.”

The Military Road intersection, undoubt-edly the most notorious of the two, separatestwo municipal wards (67 and 68), as well asthe Steenberg and Muizenberg policing pre-cincts.

A sign alerting road-users that they are ina smash-and-grab hotspot was erected by theCity of Cape Town’s roads department fol-lowing a request to ward 68 councillor, Mari-ta Petersen.

But Steenberg resident Reginald Grantsays the signs are “a waste of time and mon-ey”.

“The thieves are still committing thecrimes and getting away with it,” he says.

“A sign is not going to stop a desperatedrug addict from committing a crime. Theywork in teams at the two intersections; theyneed to be stopped, if not by the authorities, then by the community.”

Lavender Hill community worker CliveJacobs suggests motorists use alternativeroutes to their destinations. “They shouldrather avoid the intersection. There are somany other routes for them to use,” he says.

“People need to be more vigilant as well.

All the warnings and safety tips provided byauthorities have fallen on deaf ears, becausethe incidents still occur.”

Similarly to Grant, Jacobs believes thesigns are futile.

“It’s useless; people can’t really see it. I do

not see why it was erected,” he says.“And residents have had enough of the

PROPERTY: POTENTIAL BUYERS SHOULD MAKE INFORMED CHOICES

House hunting? Know your rightsLAILA MAJIET

@laila_newsie

Buying or selling property through anestate agent? Here’s how to protect your interests

when doing so, andwhat you can do if thingsgo wrong.Investing your life savings to buy a prop-

erty is not an easy decision to make. But knowing you’re in the capable hands

of an upright estate agent may make the ex-perience a lot less daunting. While all estate agents are required to reg-

ister with the Estate Agency Affairs Board(EAAB), many have been found to be operat-ing without the required certification. The board is a body established by govern-

ment to protect your interests when you buyand sell property through an estate agent. The board’s marketing and publications

manager, Margie Campbell, says verifyingthe status of the estate agent is as easy aspicking up the phone.“They (potential buyers and sellers) can

phone our call centre on 087 285 3222 and pro-vide the estate agent’s name and ask themto verify or they can view our website andunder the agent search key type in the estateagents name,” she says.People’s Post recently reported on a princi-

pal estate agent plying her trade without therelevant certification (“Evicted familycharged with trespassing”, 15 May).Record of sale by a company which pro-

vides comprehensive data, analytics andsystems on property shows estate agentMishka Cassiem (Truter) bought a propertyon 23May 2012. It was purchased by the newowner on 26 June 2012 and transferred joint-ly to both the new owner and Cassiem on 12September 2012 by means of a simultaneoustransfer.A principal agent is required to have ob-

tained an NQ5 certificate as well as a Fideli-ty Fund Certificate, authorities confirm.Without these, a principal agent is fraudu-

lently selling property, according to theboard“Only licensed estate agents are supposed

to dealwith real estate transactions betweena buyer and seller or landlord and tenant,”Campbell says. Unlicensed estate agents canbe slapped with a fine of up to R25 000.A lack of knowledge and understanding

puts potential buyers at risk.Principal real estate agent Shereen Abra-

hams says the industry is tainted by “doggedagents”, these are agents who persist inmaking a sale to the point of annoyance.“I encourage potential buyers and sellers

to familiarise themselves with the process

of buying and sell-ing a propertythrough an estateagent before takingthe plunge,” shesays. “Doggedagents will easilytake advantage ofpeople’s lack ofknowledge.”Ask questions be-

fore signing offyour hard-earnedmoney, Abrahamsencourages.“Make sure you

are credit worthy.Prequalify yourselfat the bank to knowwhat you can buyfor,” she advises.“Look at what is

on the market inyour price rangeand view a numberof properties to getto know the value ofhouses on sale inthe area you arepurchasing.“Also inspect for defects as renovations

and repairs are costly. Compare what youlike on each property and follow your in-stincts.”In an attempt to buy a house, potential

buyer Chantelle Rooi (41), says she uncov-ered a handful of “dodgy estate agents whoare in it just to make a quick buck”.“I had the money to buy a house in my

neighbourhood. I had been living with mymother and decided Iwas ready tomake thatmove,” she says. But she was in for a shock when estate

agents drove her around the neighbourhoodto view potential homes from the window ofthe car.“They would never allow me to get out of

the car and view the inside of the property.

That is when I knew something is wrong,”she says. This has wavered her trust in estate

agents. “You just don’t knowwhomto trust.”Do you suspect your estate agent has vio-

lated the law or the code of conduct govern-ing the industry? Youmay lodge a complaintin writing with the EAAB. You are entitledto claim repayment from the board’s fidelityfund if an estate agent has stolen ormisman-aged your money. The complaintmust contain an exposition

(a comprehensive description and explana-tion) of the conduct andbedelivered byhandor by registered post. The EAABwas unableto confirm the number of unregistered es-tate agents reported to them.V Call the Estate Agency Affairs Board whistle-blowerhotline on 0800 223 225.

WARNING: Potential property buyers and sellers are urged to wise upon their rights when dealing with estate agents. PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES

Steenberg Community Police Forum(CPF) chairperson Kevin Southgate la-belled the incidents “a great concern”.“Although it has been brought to the

attention of the police and the Metro Po-lice atmonthlymeetings, the ongoing in-cidents highlights a number of con-cerns,” he says.“It appears law enforcement agencies

have not registered it as a priority andtherefore no sustainable plan of actionhas been implemented. It is this type ofaction that creates the perception au-thorities are not committed to the eradi-cation of crime.”Southgate further adds to the senti-

ment that the erection of signage with-out visible policing is a futile exercise.“Perpetrators have no regard for such

signage – this is evident by ongoingcriminal activities. If a survey is con-ducted in the area aroundMilitaryRoad, youwould find armed robberies are alsoregular occurrences,” he says.“A challenge is also the lack of cooper-

ation between Steenberg and Muizen-berg police in this regard, which is fur-ther exacerbated by the lack of coordina-tion between the police and MetroPolice. While these agencies fail to im-plement an integrated plan, the commu-nity and motorists continue to suffer.”Councillor Marita Petersen confirms

she requested the City of Cape Town’sroads department to erect the signs atthe Military Road and Prince GeorgeDrive intersection nearly a year ago.Steenberg police spokesperson Con-

stable Zodwa Kedama confirms the inci-

dents are still occurring.“We have stepped up visible police at

both intersections, especially duringpeak hours,” she says. However, she believes the erection of

the signs at Military Road has led to adecrease in reported incidents.“It seems motorists and their passen-

gers are more cautious when approach-ing the intersections,” Kedama says.“They are ensuring that their valua-

bles are placed out of sight and they arevigilant when standing at the robot.”She further condemns threats of vigi-

lantism, urging the community to reportsuspects rather than taking the law intotheir own hands.Similarly, Muizenberg police spokes-

person Captain Stephen Knapp saysthey have increased daily patrols andstationary police vehicles in the area.“We would like to encourage all motor-ists to remain vigilant at any intersec-tion when stationary,” he says.“They should pay special heed to any-

one loitering in the vicinity and reportsuspicious behaviour to the police.”Ward 67 councillor Shaun August also

warns motorists.“Always put your bags in the car boot

and put any valuable items, especiallycellphones, out of sight. Do not stop di-rectly after the vehicle in front of you;always allow some room for you tomove.”He further encourages residents to not

get involved in acts of vigilantism, butrather make citizens’ arrests and con-tact law enforcement authorities.V Share your thoughts. Starting with the word“Post” SMS your comments to 32516. SMSes costR1.

man did not die.Police are searching for a man who wore

a black hooded top in connection with theshooting. At the time of going to press no arrests

have been made.A Vrygrond resident, who spoke on condi-

Preparingfor theBig ChillWinter is here, which means gloves, soup, electric blankets and precautionary meas-ures to stay extra warm on a rainy day. Pow-er outages are very common inwinter, so it’sprudent to be sparing with electricity andwater. Winter is not a favourite with manypeople, so People’s Post took to the streets tofind out what readers had to say.

ALBERTUS LOEDOLFF doesn’t really take anymeasures to save electricity for winter. “The onlything I did to save money this winter was not replace my pool pump.” PHOTOS: JODY FORTUIN

TASNEEM VAN DIENEL loves to hibernate in winter so she is preparing for the cold times by switching off her geyser. “I love spending time with family and friends on our movie nights.”

LUCKY ELDOM loves the outdoors, so he is nottoo worried about no electricity and warm waterin winter. “I jog a lot, because you don't get toohot and it’s better than just staying at home.”

EVA RAUSCH labels herself as a friend to the environment and is not really perturbed by the Capewinter. “I have solar heating, boreholes and isoboards to save electricity and to heat the house.”

CHRIS BRUINERS is a big fan of winter becausehe gets together with family and friends. “I switchoff the geyser and the TV when it’s not in useand I switch off the lights early.”

MIKE FINN finds it difficult to save electricity andwater in winter, but tries. “I use the washing machine less, but I use the tumble dryer more. I turnoff the geyser and only switch when needed.”

CARYN KOCK is prepared for the cold fronts. “Iuse my gas stove, the gas heater and I light upmy fire place. I also switch off my geyser and Iuse my geyser blanket, which works wonders.”

RESTITUTION: DEVELOPMENT ON THE CARDS

Family plans next stepMONIQUE DUVAL

@monique_duval

It was a day of reconnecting, story tellingand the revealing of big plans as the HadjiIsmail Solomon Family Trust gathered at

the Retreat Civic Centre to celebrate gettingtheir Constantia farm back. The trust is one of two that were recently

awarded a land restitution claim for the OldSillery Farm along Ladies Mile Road.Trustee Sharief Solomon said due to the

state of the land the family has ruled out the

possibility of using it as a farm. They have now approached developers

and are looking at the possibility of buildinga mixed-use development consisting of ashopping centre and upmarket apartments.“We are in talks but have not made any

decisions or applications yet,” he says.Solomon says the family will first have to

consider the current zoning of the land. The family –who is spreadacrossAthlone,

Retreat, Grassy Park, Wynberg and Manen-berg – have also not yet decided if they willlive in the planned residential complex.

“Weare still in discussionandwill see whether it will be bene-ficial to let the apartments. Wealso need to look at how Con-stantia has changed since weleft and what will be best for itscurrent residents,” he says.In 1902, the land located next

to the Ladies Mile Drop-off wasboughtbybrothersHadjiAbdul-lah and Hadji Ismail Solomonwho used the land for farmingpurposes. In 1969under theGroupAreas

Act, the familywas forced to sellthe land and move after Con-stantia was named a “white ar-ea”.In 1999, the Hadji Abdullah

Solomon Trust and Hadji IsmailSolomon Trust made applica-tion to the Land Claims Courtfor the restoration of their land.

Galema Solomon (72) the oldest daughterof Hadji Ismail reminisced about her moth-er’s flower garden and the days they spentworking on the farm. She explained the Solomon brothers

worked hard and were awarded a contractwith a shipping company to provide freshvegetables to the ships. She says becoming despondent was a

struggle, fearing the family would never getwhat was rightfully theirs.“But we fought until the end and today we

celebrate and reconnect with our family,”she said.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildrenwho didn’t know the Solomon brothers weretreated to avideodocumentary outlining thefarm’s history.Several elders spoke of their experiences

and how they longed to return.Galema sheds tears when asked to reflect

on the day they were removed.“The only thing I can say is that people

should fight forwhat is theirs andnever giveup,” she asserts. The family celebrated with prayer, a

lunch and reconnected with those they ha-ven’t seen.

Keeping your spending in checkAre you keen to make your money

stretch but unsure how?Make four simple changes to the

way you spend. It’s as easy as that, saysEu-nice Sibiya, the head of consumer educa-tion at a national banking group in a state-ment.Four of theworst spending habits result-

ing in colossal financial headaches areshoppingwithout a plan or budget, makingsmall daily purchases, not keeping track ofthe interest rate on money borrowed andlazy spending, Sibiya says.

Shopping without a planA quick trip to the stores is a major pit-

fall.Even if you go into a store with the best

of intentions, such as going to pay yourstore card, shoppers are often led astrayand end up buying something as you leave,Sibiya says.“How often do you decide to pop into a

mall or shop during your lunch hour or onthe weekend without intending on buyinganything and coming away with armfulsof new clothes, shoes or even a nice cakefrom a bakery?”The best thing to do is to avoid going to

the shops in the first place, she insists.“Unless there is a very specific thing that

you need and it is written down, don’t ven-ture into a store. And if you tend to spendyour weekends at malls, try finding anoth-er option that is healthier for your walletand your family, like a picnic in the parkor visiting friends. Try pay for your storecard through an electronic transfer, whichwill stop the temptation of unplanned buy-

ing.”

Small purchases make a big differenceA take-away cappuccino and lunch daily

might not seem like a big expense at thatmoment, costing around R50, but regularindulgence of this will be your ruin.

“These small daily purchases quickly ac-cumulate. An average working month has22 working days, so R50 for each of thesedays will amount to R1100, without youeven realising it,” she says. “If you aremore careful about spending on the every-day items, you will quickly find that you

have more cash at the end of the month, without even really trying.”

Debt interest rateDo you know the current interest rate on

each of the cards in your wallet? The an-swer is most likely not.“If you don’t know how much you are

paying to borrow money, how can you beexpected to keep control of it?” says Sibiya.“Once you understand how much yourdebt is costing you, you can start workingtowards paying off some of these debts fast-er.Once one card is paid off, don’t be tempt-ed to spend on it again.”

Lazy spendingThis is a huge financial curse.Almost everything that you spend onhas

an alternative that may be more cost effec-tive and just as good. Everything from dis-counts on school fees if youhavemore thanone child in school, to reviewing insurancepolicies, to what common household itemsyou purchase each week.“Spending wisely and saving is not

unachievable, but what it does require istime and patience. Most people end upmaking bad spending choices, just becausethey haven’t taken the time to consider analternative,” Sibiya adds. There are so many smarter spending al-

ternatives. But it requires time and disci-pline to go through the different options.“Lazy spending is one of the worst habitsto get into, and if not curbed, it may leadto debt spiral. B financially smart, take ac-tion and start spending sensibly.”

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT: HELPING FAMILIES COPE WITH DISABLED CHILDREN

Better living for childrenwith disabilitiesJODY FORTUIN

@JodyF13

Parents struggling to cope with provid-ing their disabled child with an im-provedquality of life, neednot despair.

There is help.Uhambo Foundation, founded in 2010, is

an NPO with the mission statement of sup-porting the rights and equal participationof people with disabilities in communities.

The NPO considers itself a fierce propo-nent of equality for all, and strives to createand assist in the social development of chil-dren with disabilities.

LorraineFrost is the foundation’s generalmanager and says that cutting through allthe stress of running the organisation andpromoting their message, the joy of a disa-bled child accessing its potential makes itworthwhile.

“We are helping 700 children from infor-mal settlements to learn how to speak, playand just be active,” she says.

“It is a blessing seeing a child not know-ing how to talk the one day, to counting andsinging songs after six months. I can’t de-scribe the feeling.”

UhamboFoundationhas establishedpart-nerships with the City of Cape Town, NPOsand private sectors to develop appropriateand safe wheelchair provision and commu-nity-based services and training.

“We try our best to create opportunitiesfor people with disabilities in less-re-sourced settings by building an inclusivesociety, without barriers for all,” saysFrost.

The foundation raises ongoing financialresources from local and internationalfunders to ensure sustainable outcomes of

the Uhambo Foundation’s objectives. They actively participate in local and in-

ternational policy development, policy im-plementation programmes and in advocacyand raising awareness.

Uhambo Foundation hosts disability fo-cus groups, therapy sessions and classesthat teach parents how to play with theirchildren with disabilities to stimulate thechildren’s development.

The foundation alsohasDayCareDisabil-itySupport programmesand theNdinogona“I can” stimulationprogramme for childrenwith disabilities.

The Ndinogona “I can” stimulation pro-gramme involves the use of play and it as-sists carers to play with and stimulate chil-drenwith disabilities, allowing them to par-ticipate in everyday activities.

The Ndinogona Stimulation Kit also im-proves the children’s responsiveness, re-duces sensory and behavioural problems.

There are only three permanent workersat Uhambo Foundation. Nobuntu Ngcoyi, who works in the community developmentsection of the foundation, takes care of allthe community outreach programmes in-cluding disability focus groups and supportgroups for families.

Ngcoyi says: “In my culture, disability isassociated with witchcraft, so parents areafraid of taking their children out of thehouse.

“We encourage them to meet other par-ents who suffer with the similar fear whichmakes it easy for them, because they don’tfeel alone and ashamed anymore,” she says.

The Uhambo Foundation helps childrenwith disabilities find schools that are moresuitable for their needs.

They also create job opportunities for the

older children. The training courses hosted by the foun-

dation comes in different forms. They train care givers tohelp the children

with physical treatment, they train the par-ents how to work with their children’s con-dition and they help find the cause and howto improve physically and mentally.

Rochelle van der Walt, the main facilita-tor and trainer, says: “Iworkon stimulatingthe children on a one-on-one basis, becauseit is important to give them your full atten-tion.

“I was a teacher at a mainstream school, but ever since I worked with children withdisabilities I gravitated to people with spe-cial needs and that’s what I do now.”

Themost important training the UhamboFoundation does is train the care givers, familymembers andhealthworkers regard-ing the care, management and rehabilita-tion of children with disabilities to ensurethe prevention of secondary health compli-cations.

“If a child does not have the right wheel-chair, then he/she can’t do the programme, that iswhyweuse theMadibaBuggy,”Frostsays.

The Madiba Modular Postural SeatingDevice (Madiba Buggy) is designed andmade by Shonaquip.

It provides full body support for peoplewith severe disabilities.

The disability equipment and training or-ganisation has expert therapy teams thatmake sure the individual is comfortable andcorrectly seated in wheelchairs and otherbody support devices.V For more information on Uhambo Foundation callLorraine Frost on (021) 797 8239 or go to www.uham-bofoundation.org.za

Added benefit to buckling upSeat belts and air bags are not only good

at protecting a person’s head and chestduring a car crash. They also help pro-

tect the kidneys, according to a news reportin Wheels24.

Researchers found that survivors of carcrashes who wore a seat belt and had a vehi-cle with air bags were less likely to have aserious kidney injury or to need one of theirkidneys removed than people who didn’ttake those precautions.

Dr Marc Bjurlin, a urologist at NYU Lang-one Medical Centre in New York, says: “Thisprovides additional evidence to support therole of these protective devices in motor ve-hicles.”

Soften the impactThe research was presented on Friday 16

May at the 109th Annual Scientific Meetingof the American Urological Association inOrlando, Florida.

Seat belts are designed to spread the forceof a vehicle crash across the pelvis and chestwhile an air bag is meant to soften the im-pact between the body and car.

For the new study, the researchers ana-lysed information on motor vehicle crash in-juries in 2010 and 2011 from the NationalTrauma Data Bank. Of the 287 174 accidents, there were 2 580 kidney injuries.

The researchers found that when air bagsand seat belts were used together, the riskof serious kidney injuries fell by about 23%.The risk of surgery to remove a kidney fellby more than half.

Bjurlin says there are likely multiple rea-sons why using seat belts and air bags pro-tects the kidneys.

For example, seat belts keep people frommoving around the vehicle while alsospreading out the impact of the crash.

Ironically, in some studies the seat belthas been found to be a cause of kidney inju-ries. While that may be true in some cases,he says, overall wearing seat belts and usingair bags is beneficial.

“It protects your kidneys and reduced therisk of them being taken out.” SAFETY FIRST: A study has found that using your seat belt is still the safer option. PHOTO: GOOGLE IMAGES

How to buy acar onlineA British fraud intelligence compa-

ny provides eight useful tips forbuying cars online.

According to figures released by theBritish National Fraud Intelligence Bu-reau, online vehicle fraud costs the UKthe equivalent of R296m each year, ac-cording to a report in Wheels24.About half of frauds involved used car

buyers losing part or full payment for avehicle and then loss of contact with the“seller”.HPI, a car history check company,

urges customers to be vigilant, especial-ly when it comes to buying online, asfraudsters have a whole range of tricksthey use to con people out of their mon-ey.

Crafty fraudstersHPI senior consumer cervices manag-

er Shane Teskey says: “The latest fig-ures show that toomanyused car buyersare being duped by crafty fraudsters outto make a quick profit.“Online car buying is fast and conven-

ient, but it also gives scammers some-where to hide. Some fraudsters evenmanage to take money for cars that areadvertised online, but don’t actually ex-ist.“Online sellers will often come across

as friendly, offering to make the sale aseasy as possible, while at the same timeoffering a bargain.”HPI’s tips of online used-car buying

are:. Shop around: compare prices on

other websites.. Sites will give you an idea of the

price on make and model.. Ask questions: be on your guard.. Check out the seller’s history.. Create a short list and do an HPI

Check on the cars you’re considering.. Arrange tomeet the seller inperson,

with some company, and test drive thecar.

. Remember to cross reference theVINwith theVRMto ensure theymatch.

. When paying online ensure that thewebsite is secure.

ONLINE SHOPPING: There are ways to ensure you get a good buy on the internetwhen shopping for vehicles. PHOTO: LAILA MAJIET

Violets wilt againstManenberg RangersLIAM MOSES

@LiamCPT

Violets RFC will look to return to win-ning ways on Saturday after suffer-ing their second loss of the season

last weekend. The Chucker Road club are second on

the Super League C table and already looklike contenders for the title.

However, if Violets are to take the leagueand earn promotion to Super League B,they will need to be more consistent.

Violets kicked off the season with a 14-20loss away to Observatory’s Silvertree, beatStrand 21-15 at home, thrashed Van derStel 52-21 away, beat Northerns 19-3 athome, thumped Eerste River 51-15 at homeand slumped to a 6-8 loss away to Manen-berg Rangers last Saturday.

Victory against Rangers would haveseen Violets on top of the standings, butLanga currently lead the standings, onepoint ahead on 21. They will travel to facefifth-placed Strand United in Strand thisweekend and, with Langa on a bye, a victo-ry will see Violets top the table temporari-ly. Meanwhile, Manenberg Rangers willtravel to Somerset West to face RaithbyUniversals buoyed by their victory againstone of the front runners.

The narrow win against Violets wasRangers’ first in five attempts this season, having suffered defeats to Franschoek

United, Silvertree, Langa and Strand in pre-vious games.

In Raithby, the Manenberg side face one ofjust two sides in the tournament with a per-fect record.

Universals racked up large scores in victo-ries against Van der Stel, Strand United, El-sies River and Stellenbosch Coronations, and currently hold third place on the tablewith 19 points in the bag.

Rangers will have put in another massiveperformance to turn over this Super LeagueC heavyweight.

Seventh-placed Silvertree have a mucheasier fixture in store and should be expectedto win. After the win against Violets, Silver-tree went on to beat Manenberg Rangers, loseto Stellenbosch Coronations, lose to StrandUnited, beat Bonteheuwel’s Silverleaf andlose to Elsies River United last Saturday.

This weekend they host Eerste River RFC,who are 13th on the table after a solitary winin five matches.

Silvertree should heap more misery on thevisitors and win the game comfortably.

The match will take place at Malta Park inObservatory at 15:30.

In other club rugby fixtures on Saturday,UCT will host Durbanville-Belville at theGreen Mile in Super League A, while in Su-per League B Collegians will host Hands andHeart in Lentegeur and Villager welcomeSurrey Estate Rangers to Brookside in Clare-mont.

Log leaders slip up, but remain topLIAM MOSES

@LiamCPT

The Mr Price High Schools’ League topthree are rueing their missed opportu-nities after dropping points in last

weekend’s fixtures.Beacon Hill High School went into Satur-

day’s matches leading the log on nine points, ahead of second-placed Portland High ongoal difference and with defending champi-ons Mondale in third on six points.

All three sides played to draws on Satur-day, with the top two missing the chance toopen a gap at the top of the standings andMondale butchering an opportunity to closethe gap on the leaders. Beacon Hill drew 1-1

with Oval North High, while Portland’smatch against Belgravia was deadlocked at2-2 and Mondale drew 1-1 against Aloe High.

The results mean all three sides maintaintheir log positions, with Beacon Hill andPortland on 10 points and Mondale on seven.

Saturday’s results had a larger impact onthe middle of the table, with several sidesshifting upwards and Cloetesville, Tafelsigand Cedar now level on points with Mon-dale. Cloetesville beat Strandfontein 4-1 toclimb from fifth to fourth and Tafelsig leaptfrom 10th to fifth with a 3-1 win over Glen-dale, who dropped to seventh. Cedar now oc-cupy sixth place thanks to a 1-0 win overSpine Road. The other results had little ef-fect on the table, with Lentegeur dropping

from sixth to ninth and Rocklands main-taining 13th place after a the sides drew1-all.

Westridge and Princeton stayed in 14thand 15th places respectively after drawing2-2. The league will continue on Saturday, but the status quo at the top of the tablewill likely be unchanged with the topteams all expected to pick up wins againstlesser opposition. However, the scrap forthird place will heat up as Mondale playsfifth-placed Tafelsig and fourth-placedCloetesville play sixth-placed Cedar.V Fixtures for Saturday 24 May: (09:00) Tafelsigvs Mondale; Portland vs Westridge; Princeton Highvs Strandfontein High; Belgravia High vs LentegeurHigh; (10:15) Cloetesville High vs Cedar High; Spine
