When reality bytes backWhen reality bytes backDear reader,

Like the thousands of hope-fuls who enter Idols each year, most of us believe we’re stars. And why not?

After all, each of us has an in-teresting life story to tell and ifmovies were made of these, wewould all be stars.

Real life tales aside, there’snothing more powerful thanhaving a dream, or in the caseof most Idols contestants whoclearly can’t carry a tune, moremisguided. Despite being told in the mostcandid manner by the show’s judges thatthey can’t sing, the delusional masses re-turn, year after year.

And suckers for punishment, such as I,allow them to assault my senses, year afteryear.

Idols is one of many reality shows fol-lowed by millions of voyeuristic TV view-ers, greedy for full-on glimpses into others’lives.

It’s hard to believe that with the adventof TV back in the 70s, riveting viewing wasprovided by the sedate likes of shows likeDallas and Kojak and truly innocent chil-dren’s programmes such as Heidi andBlack Beauty.

Back in District Six, my parents were

among the first to acquirea black-and-white Blau-punkt telly, for which mymom paid all of R450 cash;impressive! This meantthat on Dallas nights, rela-tives from as far as WalmerEstate traipsed to our hometo keep up with the doingsof the Ewings. It’s painful, but I still remember thetheme music to this andother 70s TV programmes;almost as well as I remem-ber my older cousin loudly

crunching his way through a bag of carrotswhile the rest of us strained to hear everyword coming out of this wonderful woodenbox.

Now we are spoilt for choice and consum-ers seem content with nothing short of afull menu of reality viewing, the full bou-quet served instantly. This is symptomaticof human behaviour, seldom satiated. Anddespite the endless options 21st centurytechnology has ushered in, we don’t stopwanting the next new cellphone or compu-ter.

The big old brick-of-a-block Nokia cell-phone everyone had to have when cell-phones were a novelty, is now sneered at.Facebook and other social network siteshave given truth to the term “imaginary

friends” as some people clock up thousandsof “www friends”; while at the same timeprofessing to leading very lonely (meaningreal) lives.

And when you’ve had enough of your vir-tual friends, after a virtual tiff, you simplyboot them off BB or FB - no questions asked.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge fan oftechnology and its many benefits such ascost-effective communication, access to in-formation and connection to others.

I have no desire to return to the days ofpenpals and handwritten letters, but wheredo we draw the line? Some people take so-cial networking to scary levels; broadcast-ing their painful experiences on a myriadof digital platforms.

Others cowardly end relationships viaemail. Then there are the inherent dangersthis exposure brings, to the impressionableand vulnerable.

But who am I to judge when I too havebecome enslaved to modern technologyand cannot imagine being without my niftygadgets and the endless possibilities itbrings?

School’s unwanted scaly charactersSchool’s unwanted scaly charactersLILLIAN AMOS

STAFF at Prince George Drive Primary Schoolgot the fright of their lives when they found aPuff adder on the premises.

One of the staff members was taking a strollaround the school when he spotted the two-meterlong slithery creature in their indigenous gardenand immediately ran to get help.

Principal Lameez Rabbaney says she got chillsdown her spine when she first saw the snake.

“It was an extremely scary experience. We didn’tknow what kind of snake it was at first. Then someconservation officers came along and informed usthat the snake was actually extremely dangerous.”

It isn’t the first time the school receives a visitfrom the scaly critters.

During the first term, a baby cobra was found insome bushes on the school grounds.

“We’ve seen a couple of snakes around, mostlymole snakes,”she says.

Rabbaney says she is relieved that it is school holi-days and the children weren’t around.

“We often take the children out to the exact areawhere the snake was found. I am so glad it’s holidaysbecause you never know what could’ve happened.”

Henry Pheiffer, a field ranger from the RondevleiNature Reserve believes the snake comes from thereserve.

“At the moment there is construction happeningat the nature reserve so the vegetation and some ani-mals’ territory is being disturbed. Because theschool is so close to the nature reserve, the snakeprobably thought it a safe place to hide,” he says.

The field ranger advises anyone who comes acrossa snake to immediately call wildlife services.

“A snake won’t strike very easily. Most attackshappen when they are stepped on or when they feelthreatened.

The best thing to do is leave the snake and callwildlife services to remove it and take it to a safeplace.”

Shock after electricity price hikeLILLIAN AMOS

WITH the new financial year in fullswing, the City of Cape Town’s electrici-ty tariff increase has become a reality.

Since Sunday, consumers have to coughup, on average, 11% more for electricity.

The City says the tariff hike has been putin place to “construct and maintain” equip-ment that transforms the power supply sothat it meets customers’ needs, suppliespublic lighting and provides secondary sup-port services.

The City’s electricity services depart-ment is the linkbetween theElectricitySup-plier (Eskom) and consumers.

The City has two different tariff struc-tures for residential properties – Lifelineand Domestic.

The Lifeline tariffs which apply to house-holds where electricity usage amounts to450 kilowatt hours (kWh) or as is more com-monly referred to, 450 units on average amonth.

Residents who qualify for the lifeline tar-iff receive free basic electricity allocationsevery month. Those who use on average

more than 450kWh a month are charged thedomestic tariff.

In essence, the more electricity you use,the more you pay.

There is, however, also a sliding scale at-tached to the cost of electricity in the Life-line category, engineered to drive downelectricity consumption.

With the price increases, residents whofall into the lifeline tariff category will payjust under 65 cents a kWh/unit for the first150 units that they buy (although the Cityeffectively pays for the first 50 units whichare free under the lifeline tariff).

If you buy;. between 150 and 350 units, the price per

unit is just under 90 cents, which is an 11 %increase.

. between 350 and 600 units, there is a9.9 % increase

. more than 600 units it will cost 18.7 %more.

The City of Cape Town has urged consum-ers to buy only the amount of electricitythey anticipate to use in a particular month, because excess electricity will be charged ata higher rate.

It has also urged customers to try and

save electricity where possible, in order tominimise consumption.

Silvia Grove from Retreat says she can’tafford spending more on bills every month.

“Everything is becoming more expen-sive.” she says.

“Last time it was the petrol, then Metro-rail and now the electricity. It is becomingtoo much to keep up with, but I guess wedon’t have a choice anyway.

Gadieja Ismail from Parkwood makessoup for the area’s children everyweek. Shealso runs a catering business and says thenew price hike will definitely leave a holein her pocket.

“I have been cooking for many years, andnow it seems my passion has to be curbedbecause I already spend so much on electric-ity. Now I’m going to have to scale downdrastically.”

Here are a couple of ways you can saveelectricity:

. Turn geyser temperature down to 60oCelsius.

Maintaining the temperature at 60oC usesless electricity than maintaining a tempera-ture of 70oC. Don’t drop it below 60oC forhealth reasons.

. Use less hot water, for example; showerinstead of bath, and take shorter showers.Only fill the kettle for as much as you need.Wash a full load of dishes, rather than onedish at a time.

. Switch off equipment when not in useTurn appliances off at the wall plug, rath-

er than leaving them on standby as this canstill draw about 20 % or more of normalelectricity use.

. Install an efficient shower head. CapeTown water by-laws limit shower flow ratesto no more than 10 litres per minute. To testthis at home, hold a bucket under the show-er-head for 12 seconds.

Measure the amount of water within thebucket with a measuring jug. If there ismore than 2 litres then your shower-head isinefficient.

. Insulate the geyser.A geyser “blanket” maximises heat reten-

tion.. Install efficient lightingCompact fluorescent lamps use 75 % less

power than old incandescent bulbs, and lastmuch longer.

For more tips or information visit theCity’s website at www.capetown.gov.za.

Rail commuters to cough upNATHAN ADONIS

RAIL commuters are being hit hard in thepocket as monthly train fares have gone up.

Retreat commuters are among those to feelit the most. They have to fork out an extraR16 for MertroPlus monthly tickets to CapeTown. That means from this month to De-cember they will have paid a total of R96more to get to the city on first class.

Metro commuters from Heathfield, Mui-zenberg, Athlone and Mitchell’s Plain allhave to budget R12 more.

The price hike came into effect on Sunday.Sound engineering student Kenneth

Mokoatsi catches the train from Retreat tothe city each day.

This MetroPlus commuter paid R200 for amonthly ticket, but he now has to fork outan additional R16.

Mokoatsi says: “It puts more pressure onthe average working person. Travelling eve-ry day is something you can’t avoid. Peopleare struggling financially already and relyheavily on the trains.”

The option of using taxis, he says, wouldcome at a higher price.

“The average person earning a minimumwage, such as cashiers and petrol attend-ants, will be some of those hardest hit by the

end of the discount,” says Mokoatsi. He was referring to a 15% Metrorail dis-

count for monthly ticket holders from Aprilto June.

The price hike would have set in on 1April, but labour federations negotiated fora delay in the increase.

Mokoatsi says the increase will “cut intoother costs, such as food and clothing”.

Duncan Hanekom, an electrician, com-mutes daily from Retreat to Wynberg.

Hanekom says: “I am not happy with theMetrorail service and I know other peopleare not happy either.

“The train is always late or full becauseof carriages that are short.”

He believes commuters will be upset withthe increase. “I don’t know if they will usethis extra money to fix the trains,” saysHanekom. “We will have to wait and see.”

Hanekom added that people who earnweekly wages will feel the increase more.

Metrorailmarketingandcommunicationsmanager Riana Scott says: “Monthly ticketsvalid from July onwards will revert to theoriginal increase, irrespective of (the) datepurchased.”

For full information on the increases visitthe Metrorail website at http://www.capemetrorail.co.za.

Holiday programmes shot downLILLIAN AMOS

WITH the school holidays upon us, parentsfrom Lavender Hill and surrounds are in astate of panic over the safety of their chil-dren.

Daily gang-related shootings have parentsfearing for the lives of their children.

“I refuse to let my children play outside,”says Lavender Hill resident Natalie South.

Her sister looks after her children whileSouth is at work.

“I call home every 10 minutes just to checkup on them. In a split second I can lose mychildren because of these monsters runningaround with their guns killing innocent peo-ple.”

The mother of two says she has bought herseven- and nine-year-olds a TV game andboard games to keep them occupied and in-doors.

A Steenberg resident, who refuses to benamed, says he sent his six- and 14-year-oldsons to his sister’s for the holidays.

“My sons are already traumatised by allthe shootings. My youngest one doesn’t evenwant to sleep in his own bed anymore be-cause every night he hears the gunshots andhe starts crying and has nightmares.”

The man says he sent them away for theholidays because he knows they will be saferaway from home.

People’s Post last week reported (“Chil-dren caught in the crossfire”) that a holidayprogramme had had to be cancelled by or-ganisers as a result of the gang violence.

Clive Jacobs, who planned the holiday pro-gramme, said he was not willing to put chil-dren’s lives in danger.

Lucinda Evans, founder of Philisa AbafaziBethu in Lavender Hill, was also planningto run a two-week holiday programme.

Herprogrammehashad tobe cut short twodays in when a group of children walking toa nearby field for some sporting activitieshad to turn back at the sound of gunfireerupting.

“For the past four years we’ve been run-ning this holiday programme and not oncedid we cancel it,” says Evans. “But this timeI realised the children are truly in danger.”

She says most of the children come fromhigh-risk areas in Lavender Hill and dangerawaits during their walk home.

“Many parents have come to me beggingto continue the holiday programme, but Icannot guarantee the safety of the children. The children are vulnerable,” says Evans.

“Now the children have to stay in theirhouses the entire day. How fair is that tothem?”

An 11-year-old boy from Steenberg toldPeople’s Post the only time he is allowed outof the house this holiday is when he goes tomadressah.

“I can’t play outside with my friends; Ican’t go to the shop. I can’t even play in theyard because my parents say I could easilybe shot,” he says.

“It makes me sad to live like this becauseI like playing with my friends. Now I can’teven run to the shop to buy chips or sweets.”

Slaying ‘wasnot a robbery’LUKUZO ZINI

THE murder of community workerSoraya Nordeen on Friday has left along-time friend believing there is an-other motive for her death.

Fellow community worker Aysha Dav-ids believes Nordeen’s death was not a rob-bery as police had said.

Nordeen (48) was reportedly shot in thechest at her boyfriend’s house by two menwho robbed her boyfriend of his wallet andcellphone in St Montague’s Village, Laven-der Hill.

Nordeen’s boyfriend told police he wasstanding outside busy on the cellphonewhen he saw two men in the street.

He then decided to go into the wendyhouse where he was followed by thesemen.

When the two men entered the houseNordeen was lying on the bed. The twomen threatened the couple with a gun anddemanded money.

Captain Frederick van Wyk says the mo-tive is robbery.

Van Wyk says: “During the incident analtercation ensued and a shot went off hit-ting the victim where she was lying in herbed.”

He says she sustained one gunshotwound to her chest and died on the scene.

The suspects fled the scene on foot andone was arrested by police who were pa-trolling the area and responded to the com-plaint.

A murder case was opened for investiga-tion.

However, Davids does not believe it wasa robbery. She thinks it was a gang-relatedincident and Nordeen was targeted.

“The police say it was a robbery, but Idon’t think so. I think this is gang-relatedbecause she had received threats a weekbefore her death.”

According to Davids this was not thefirst time Nordeen had received a deaththreat and she was traumatised by thethreat. “She was threatened with a gun aweek ago, and she was traumatised. Shehas always encountered problems withgangsters because she would go up to themand ask them to stop what they were doingand even said she will pray for them.

“I think this is the reason she was target-ed by the gangs and that’s why I believeher death is because of gangs and not rob-bery.”

Nordeen was a member of the neigh-bourhood watch in Lavender Hill. She alsoserved as vice-chairperson for a women’sNGO for 18 years.

TRANSFORMED:Sebastino Nelson,a resident at theBeth Uriel Home inSalt River, is one ofthree men whowere given free coverups by a Muizenberg tattoo shopduring YouthMonth. LindsayHenley, a socialworker at the Christian facility foryoung men, says:“For some of ourfamily members, life before Beth Uriel included gang participation and other gangrelatedactivity. Most have left that lifestyle behind, but are left with the marks as tattoos area way of physically affiliating with groups,” she says. The coverups, done by Tattoo Muse, are a way for many of the home’s youth to make a symbolic change to represent thehard work they have put in to change their lives. ACHMAT EBRAHIMCITY MANAGER

City needs more cashto remove your trashYOU ARE now paying 7,06 %more for your refuse removal.

The City of Cape Town an-nounced the tariff increase lastweek and it was implemented onSunday 1 July.

The new tariffs has been put inplace to develop new landfillsites because the existing sitesare almost full.

Over three million WesternCape residents generate be-tween 5 000 and 6 000 tons of do-mestic and industrial waste perday. As older landfill sites reachcapacity, waste has to be trans-ported further away to new land-fill sites and refuse trucks haveto be replaced.

According to the City, theseneeds are driving up costs forboth the collection and disposalof waste.

The City is running a series ofwaste minimisation campaigns,

but still, it is becoming more ex-pensive.

While the City has increasedthe average charge for refuse re-moval, it is also putting moneyaside to assist those in need byproviding a rebate.

Subsidies worth almostR2 million have been allocatedfor the new financial year.

The rebate categories dependson the value of your property.

If your property is between R0and R100 000 you get a 100 per-cent rebate.

Between R100 000 and R150 000= 75 % rebate.

Between R150 000 and R350 000= 50 % rebate

Between R350 000 and R400 000= 25 % rebate.

For more information on anyof the new solid waste manage-ment tariffs, contact the City’scall centre on 0860 103 089.

UNFAIR:Terence Masamuna believes itwould beunfair tothe learners. “I canunderstandlearners aredropping outand the schoolsdon’t have enough learners, but a lot of them still want tobe there and to learn so they can’tclose the schools down. That’snot fair.”

CONCERNED:Lindsay Collings, a mother, is worriedabout thesituation.“The reasons forwanting toclose theseschools arenot legitimate. Theyneed to work onfixing the schools and not justshutting them down when theyaren’t doing well. They will destroythose children’s lives by closingtheir schools.”

ON THE STREETS:HeinrichBarendse saysnot having aneducation canlead to a badfuture. “Ifthese childrenhave nowhereto learn they willend up on thestreets doingdrugs. I dropped out ofschool when I was younger and realised my life was heading in a baddirection so I did everything Icould to get a proper education.”

SURVIVAL:JaylanJafthafeelsstronglyaboutthe issue. Hehas manycousinswhodropped outof school andare now struggling tomake a living. “Children need aneducation to survive in the world. Not having an education in thiscountry especially can put youstraight on the streets.”

SCHOOLA NEED:JoanneMaasdorpsays:“Something likethis isvery closeto myheart. WhenI was a child Iwanted tostudy, but my family didn’thave the money. These childrenhave a right to go to school; theyneed to go to school.”

OVERCROWDED: FaidahAbrahamsfeels closing downtheschoolswill resultin thelearnersturning tocrime. “Theyneed to beopening moreschools – not closing it. Most ofthese schools are overcrowdedand if they close then all thoselearners have no choice but toturn to crime for money.”

BASIC RIGHT:James Worsluy says closing theschoolscloses thedoor on thefutures ofthousands ofchildren.“This is probably the lastchance for a lot of children. Education is a basic humanright and if they take that awaythey are taking away any chanceof a future for the children.”

BAD TEACHERS: NerissaBerry saysthe level ofeducationsimply isn’tgoodenough. “TheDepartmentof Educationneeds to educate the teachersbefore they can educate the pupils. The teachersaren’t qualified enough and that’swhy all these children are dropping out. What’s the point of goingto school if you aren’t going tolearn?” Photos: David Mann

THE threat ofclosure hangingover 27 schoolshas caused up-roar among Peo-ple’s Post read-ers.

A high drop-out rate, poorquality of teach-ing and failure toincrease pupilnumbers areamong the rea-sons given by theprovincial educa-tion departmentto close schools.A decision will bemade later thisyear.

Some readersfeel pupils mayturn to crime, while others saythe education de-partment shouldaddress the is-sues rather thanclosing schools.Teachers alsohave to shouldersome of the re-sponsibility, saysanother reader.

The pen is mightier than the swordLILLIAN AMOS

LAVENDER Hill residents now havethe opportunity to tell the world theirlife stories.

The Women Strategy, a project runthrough New World Foundation, is aimedat equipping women who have beenabused. The organisation plans to publisha book on the women next year.

Last year women penned their dailystruggles and it was published in a bro-chure during the 16 Days of Activism. Thebrochure was handed out free of charge.

This book, which will be a compilationof stories, is a stepping stone from thisidea.

According to New World Foundation’sKim Pillay, the idea was first brain-stormed by three New World Foundationmembers to give women a platform to air

their past struggles. “We did not want toexploit marginalised women by takingtheir stories to make money for the organ-isation. So we decided to take a maximum‘empowerment’ approach,” she says.

Pillay says they then decided to do awriting course to allow the women towrite their own story in their own stylethrough a supportive and unrushed proc-ess.

The writing course offered to the wom-

en will run for a year and if it is a successit will be open for other community mem-bers. “We have enormous faith and beliefin thepeople fromLavenderHill, especial-ly women that we work with and meeteveryday,” says Pillay.

“Writing is a powerful tool and we be-lieve that many will successfully com-plete this project as part of their life’s jour-ney. Writing about ones pain and sharingit is considered to be a part of the healing.”

The true meaningof a public holidaySOUTH AFRICA has nine religiousholidays. Of these, seven are secularhumanistic in nature. Ironically, thehumanists feel quite strongly thatthey lack two more.

Which ultimately begs two ques-tions: if they represent a mere 15% ofthe SA population, why are theirvoices heard above everyone else –above the 85%? And shall we igno-miniously bear the irony of theirchildish “tantrumic” rants that theoverwhelming 75% Christian blockin South Africa be blatantly ignored?

How telling that George Jacob Ho-lyoake, who coined the term ‘secular-ism’, displayed the same deliberatehostility toward religion in general –and Christianity in particular. Ironicsurname, too.

The majority of countries aroundthe globe celebrate and commemo-rate these two amazing, world-chang-ing moments in history. Why shoul-dn’t we? Do we really wish to emulatethe few who don’t? To what end, andfor whose benefit?

The authors of our great Constitu-tion, and the immediate guardiansand administrators of our fledglingdemocracy never had any misgivingsabout the important place these two‘Holy Days’ had and the critical roleit would serve to play in sustainingthe new South Africa. Thereby, to mymind, settling the issue of “cui bono”.Were all these honourable men andwomen wrong? As far as defining‘public holiday’ in the SA context, theclosest to an official (but also note-worthy) definition I could find is, thatwhich “celebrates a South Africanidentity, fostering reconciliation andpromoting the notion that variety isa national asset, and acknowledgesthose whose selfless efforts and tal-ents were dedicated to this goal…”,taken from a 1996 speech by then-President Nelson Mandela. In meet-ing the above criteria, and measuredcomparatively on every significance, number of adherents, universality,GDP contributive, nation-building,R&R, neighbourliness and philan-thropy scale, theChristmasandGoodFriday public holidays comprehen-sively outshines the rest!

Also, in terms of ‘public holiday’defined, if most of the general ‘public’celebrating or commemorating a par-ticular ‘holiday’ is Christian, thequestion of observing such a day (re-ligious or otherwise) is rather aca-demic, and becomes a mere matter ofsemantics.

These public hearings alarminglyremind me of Ernest Benn who fa-mously said: “Politics is the art oflooking for trouble, finding it wheth-er it exists or not, diagnosing it incor-rectly, and applying the wrong reme-dy.” We are sincere in our hopes thatthis Commission avoids said culpa-bility.VERNON WAGNERCafda Village

The Dave Spence Memorial 10 km race presented bythe RCS Gugulethu Athletic Club which forms part ofWestern Province Athletics PowerAde League serieswill take place will take place on Sunday at the NY49stadium in Gugulethu.

According to organiser Marshall Moiloa, the popu-lar township race was started three years after theircelebrated coach Dave Spence passed away in 2009.

“Dave used to be a coach and mentor not only forme, but many talented young athletes from the town-ships. He was the one who urged me to start up theclub. He put in a lot of time and effort and played akey role in the establishment of theGugulethuAthleticclub. It’s great that his legacy can live on with a racethat is held in his memory,” Moila said proudly.

“A lot of people were previously scared to come intothe townships. But I think that kind of stereotypicalthinking has changed drastically in recent times. Weare expectingahuge turnout this yearbecause the raceforms part of WPA’s PowerAde League series.

“The race starts at 07:30 and the 4.2 km fun run atO7:35 about 150m from the NY49 Stadium next to theGugulethu Mall. It’s run over a fast and flat course andis perfect for runners aiming for a personal best time.

“ At Manenberg Police Station the runners will turnleft at Duinefontein Road past the Nyanga JunctionShopping Center. The route then takes at left turn atLansdowne road over the bridge through the townshipand back to the finish atthe NY49 stadium. Wehave decided to make thecut-off time for the 10kmis two and a half hours toaccommodate the walkerswho are also welcome,”explained Moila.

Registration will takeplace from 05:45 - 07:00.Entry for the 10km is R35for licensed athletes. Tem-porary licences cost R20.The first 1 000 finisherswill get medals.

Sailing centreaims for the topGRADUATES of development sailing in CapeTown’s Southern Peninsula are gearing up totake on the most prestigious sailing competitionin Southern Africa – the Lipton Challenge Cup2012.

Two sailors from the Zeekoevlei Sailing Cen-tre, Marco Tobin and Le-roy Rudolf, will be head-ing up their team of sailors from various CapeTown sailing schools at the Lipton Challenge inAugust.

This is not the first time that sailors from thecentre have competed this level– the likes of Ash-ton Sampson was part of Team Shosholoza in the2007 America’s Cup campaign; Ryan Pentolfeand Roscoe Cupido won the 2010 J22 Nationals;David Jacobs competed in the 2011 RS TeraWorld Championship in Denmark; and 16-year-old JP Roberts qualified for the 2012 RS TeraWorld Championships which will take place inItaly in August.

The centre was started in 1996 by the WynbergRotary Club with extensive and ongoing spon-sorship from Metropolitan Health. The missionof the centre is to contribute to communitydevel-opment in the predominantly low-income areasaround Zeekoevlei.

Marco Tobin joined the Zeekoevlei SailingCentre in 1998 while still a learner at GrassyPark High. The sailing centre has grown signifi-cantly since then, with school children from sixlocal schools taking turns to train every after-noon.

Says Tobin: “Since 2008 about 100 childrenhave been taught to sail every year. The childrenlearn valuable lifeskills and leadership lessonsand are also exposed to the option of sailing orboat-building and design as a career.”

A youngster who has benefited from the sail-ing centre is 20-year-old Morne Hardinge. Hestarted sailing at the age of 13 and is now em-ployed full time by the centre. “Being a part ofZeekoevlei Sailing Centre has changed my life,”says Hardinge. “It’s kept me out of gangs anddrugs and all the other problems so common inthe area where I grew up. Having been given thiswonderful opportunity, I find it very rewardingto give back to the community.”

Tobin and the Lipton Cup team are followinga strict training regimen and have their sightsset at a finish in the top five.

Schools interested in joining the ZeekoevleiSailing Centre can call (021) 689 1954. Organisa-tions interested in helping with sponsorship forthe Lipton Cup team can contact Tobin on082 706 2444.

Relegation shatters SantosTASMIN CUPIDO

NO announcements of terminations ofcontracts has been made at Engen Santosafter they were relegated from the Pre-mier Soccer League (PSL) the weekend.

This according to team manager YusufGester, who stressed that the club will hon-our all contracts of players and staffers.

The People’s Team find themselves in theNational First Division (NFD) after a 4-3 lossto fellow Cape side Chippa United in the finalrelegation-promotion playoff match at Philip-pi Stadium on Saturday. It is the first timeSantos will play in this league after enteringthe PSL in the 1996/1997 season.

Santos has had a tough season for the Ath-

lone-based side, after only winning sevenfrom a total of 30 league matches – they lost17 and drew six. Former coach Boebie Solo-mons was also sacked December.

Gester tells People’s Post that the mood – inboth the change rooms and the office – afterthe loss was “tough”. “It was very quiet andwe didn’t speak to them about the perform-ance – everyone was obviously dejected,” hesays.

“Werespected the silence of theplayers andlet it be. We really wanted to win; going intothe match we knew what was at stake, In theend the match was really close.”

Rumours that coach Mart Nooij will leavethe club has also been dispelled. “All playersand staffers are contracted with the club andwe will honour these contracts,” Gester says.

“We however cannot determine whetherthe players and coaching staff will be ap-proached by other clubs. It’s football, its thenature of the game.”

The squad and most office staffers havebeen given a break before they re-group forpre-season training and plans.

Meanwhile, Chippa United has been wel-comed into the PSL by CEO Stan Matthews.

“This is a great achievement by ChippaUnited following what has been an impres-sive run both in the NFD and subsequentlyin the playoffs. They have earned their place.I would like to take this opportunity to con-gratulate the club management, the coachingstaff, the players and their fans for achievingthis remarkable feat,” Matthews says.

“Judging from the excitement and passion

that I saw from their fans in Philippi today, there is no doubt in my mind that ChippaUnited will enjoy great support from the foot-ball family.”
