Traut adds that “we all live in a diverse community with different political, religious and cultural affiliations, but this must not be the cause for the disintegration of the com- munity as a whole”. He suggests the community must work “from the ground up and assist the youth first”. One of the solutions put forward for discus- sion is the establishment of CPF youth pro- grammes. This programme will give the youth a plat- form from which to voice their feelings and frustrations. The aim of the programme would be to as- sist the youth in feeling safe in their own com- munities. Traut said initiatives already in place as- sisting people are the Hobhouse and Mountview care programmes. These are re- habilitation centres which help people who “genuinely want to change”, according to Traut. He adds: “We are not only fighting people, (but) we are fighting the force which drives those people to steal and even murder for drugs or money.” Plans are afoot to create opportunities through which community upliftment pro- grammes can be operated. This includes the possibility of establish- ing a recycling facility at which employment will be created in Capricorn. Further, churches in the area will also join in initiatives to speak openly to the parents of children who have fallen prey to drug abuse and gangsterism. “An outreach programme will be (launched) soon,” Traut says. There will also be an opportunity for small businesses and informal traders to sell their products at the southern entrance in Capri- corn Park shopping centre. According to Traut these potential solu- tions will be discussed at follow-up meetings of the CPF. In the lap of dangerLAILA MAJIET

WHAT may seemlike harmless funcould end in yourchild’s death.

Parents drivingwith their babies ontheir laps have beenwarned.Motorists may be

slapped with a R300fine for not exercisingproper control of theirvehicle if a child, ani-mal or any other itemobstructs the driver inany way.It has been reported

that thepossibilities offatality among chil-dren sitting in thefront seat are 90%higher compared tochildren who havebeen strapped in witha seat belt on the backseat.Alida Jones, the

founder of Drive MoreSafely, lost her son ina car crash in 2007.Afterherhorrific or-

deal, she says she“cannot begin to de-scribe the agony a par-ent goes throughwhenthey have to say good-bye to their preciouschild”.She says a child of

22kg will weigh 450kgat a speed of 60kph.“The bodywillmove

at a speed 60kph until it collides withsomething. Trying to stop a child stand-ing between the front seats is the same astrying to stop a bull of 450kg.“This child becomes a missile and forc-

es through the windscreen. The organskeep on moving until they collide withsomething. The result is death,” Jones ex-plains.Childsafe, a campaign of the Child Ac-

cident Prevention Foundation of South-ern Africa and Safe Kids Worldwide, pro-motes keeping children free from harm. The organisation’s researcher, Chied-

za Mavengere, says parents travellingwith their child on their laps in the driv-er’s seat should never put a seat beltaround themselves and their baby.Mavengere says: “If there was a crash,

your baby or child could be crushed todeath. The force against your child willbe the same as 30 adults, each weighing50kg, to stand on top of the child. Theforce is tremendous.”Richard Bosman, executive director of

the City’s Safety and Security directo-rate, says: “This action is tantamount to

extreme negligence. Parents should bemore responsible.”Bosman urges motorists to at all times

refrain fromdrivingwith children or ani-mals on their laps.“If they are involved in a collision,

there is no protection for the child. If thedriver was wearing a seatbelt, then theairbag may cause further injuries to thechild on the lap. The driver also does nothave proper control of the vehicle,” hesays.Jones says: “A child on the lap of a driv-

er becomes that person’s airbag and iscrushed by the body of the person whoselap they are on.”Mavengere says the safest way for chil-

dren to travel in cars is in a child seat orbuckledupwith a seat belt that is suitablefor their weight and size.“A properly fitted child restraint keeps

the child in their seat, preventing themfrombeing thrownabout insideor ejectedfrom the vehicle.“This reduces the likelihood of your

child being killed or injured in a crash,”she explains.

GRAFFITI artists. You either love theirwork or hate it.In a bid to prevent trigger-happy graffiti

artists from defacing private and publicproperty, the City of Cape Town has come upwith the idea of practice walls. The requesthasbeenmade for subcouncils

to identify designated public spaces – one ineach ward in each subcouncil – for this pur-pose.According to the subcouncil 20 agenda

these designated spaces will “serve as prac-tice grounds for graffiti artists – to minimisegraffiti tagging on private and public proper-ty”.Ward councillor Liz Brunette supports the

idea in principle, but adds she “would likea definition of practice ground and the impli-cations”Brunette says: “We don’t want a wall full

of random work. There should be a require-ment to do a drawing which should becomea six- to nine-month artwork.”Shepoints out there is also the issue ofwho

would pay for the materials. “I don’t want toaward money out of my ward budget. I needto discuss this with the community ward fo-rum first.”Subcouncil 20 chairperson Ian Iversen

says he wanted more clarity. He agrees with Brunette that there should

be a full public participationprogrammeandmore details: “My ward (59) won’t be happy.Whowill be responsible for themaintenanceof these practice grounds? We need a budgetfor the removal of the graffiti, there is noth-ing about the clean-up process in the reportfrom Province.”Penny East, ward 71 councillor, agrees

with Brunette: “I need more clarity, thereshould be a full public participation process, not just a ward committee consultation.”

East says she needs to know which areascan be considered suitable for practicewalls.“Should they be Council-owned property?Who will be responsible for maintenance? We need full public participation.“I am not using my ward budget to clean

up after some graffiti kids have sprayed onthe wall.”She questioned the size of the practice

walls as this was also important. “Councilneeds to advertise and give the public achance to comment on this suggestion. It

should be open to everyone.”Iversen suggests adverts be placed in com-

munity newspapers.“This should be a city-wide initiative

which is included in the municipal bills, soratepayers can get a contact number for re-sponse. I believe there will be a lot of publicinterest.”Brunette agrees and suggests press releas-

es be distributed to the media to gauge theresponse from the whole city so that the“message is consistent”.

Top award for Retreat schoolTASMIN CUPIDO

ARETREAT school is among the star per-formers of the Western Cape EducationDepartment’s annual Language andMathematics Awards.

The announcement of Thomas WildschuttSenior Primary School’s achievement wasannounced at a gala event at De Hoop Prima-ry School in Somerset West on Tuesday 19February.The ceremony honoured the excellent re-

sults and improvements of the 2012 grades 3,6 and 9 classes. Pupils went through a gruel-ling series of systematic tests in language andmathematics last year. The school was awarded a certificate and

R20 000 to purchase teaching and learningsupport aids, after the Grade 6 class of 2012improved its performance in language. Theresults were compared to the school’s resultsof 2011.Principal Charles Jansen attributes the

success to the dedication of pupils and teach-ers, as well as the involvement of parents.

“We are very proud of the achievement, es-pecially owing to the fact that 54% of our pu-pils are refugees. This means that EnglishandAfrikaans is not theirmother tongue, butwe managed to receive this award.”At the awards ceremony provincial educa-

tion minister Donald Grant said the system-atic tests are important for both schools andthe department. “It is important as it informsour language and mathematics interven-tions, and improves the management of edu-cation and pupil performance,” he said.“It also gives us the opportunity to assess

where our pupils’ abilities lie and if we areimproving the quality of education in theprovince.”He, however, conceded the department still

faces challenges in the literacyandnumeracycategories. “While the 2012 tests have result-ed in some pleasing improvements, we stillface some tough challenges,” Grant said.“There is still considerablework thatneeds

to be done to ensure that these improvementscontinue to happen as we move towards ac-ceptable outcomes for all our pupils in theprovince.”

UNINVITED guests made an appearanceat a birthday party of a Cafda Villageman.

The event was held at the Retreat CivicCentre. The so-called guests strolled into the kitch-

en of the City-owned facility once the foodfor the party had arrived.Speaking on condition that she not be

named, thedaughter of thebirthdayboy saysthe centre is “infested” with cockroaches. The StMontagueVillagewomandescribes

the experience as “embarrassing” and “dis-gusting”.“Wewereat theCivicCentre earlybecause

we had to put up the decorations,” she says.“When we arrived, we did not notice it, butonce the caterers camewith the food –whichthey put in the kitchen – (the cockroaches)just came walking out of the cupboards andrefrigerator. It was horrible.”She add they “had no other choice”, but to

continue with the party as they had paidclose to R3 000 to hire the facility. “The partycontinued, although we had to set up the ca-terers on another place and then had to hopeand pray the pests did not follow,” she says.

“The party went off without a glitch, butwe really feel aggrieved. We have not hiredthe facility for a while, so when we decidedtohire it,we thoughtwewould get a top-classfacility.Wehopeother residents consideringhiring the facilitywill be carefulwhendecid-ed to hire it. They should do a thorough in-spection before the event.”Local ward councillor Jan Burger, whose

office is based at the facility, was not awareof the problem when People’s Post contactedhim. After an inspection of the entire facility

he, however, confirmed the kitchen wasfilled with cockroaches. “The cockroachesare relatively small and they hide in the cup-boards and the drains,” he says.“The inspection of the entire facility

showed cockroaches in thekitchenonly. Therest of the centre is not infested.”When asked about the safety and hygiene

for the children of an educare, which is cur-rently housed in the facility, Burger says:“The principal was also not aware of theproblem. Both the principal and the caretak-er of the facility accompanied me on the in-spection.Wewere shocked to see the infesta-tion.”Burger says the City’s district Sports and

Amenities office will fumigate the facility.

‘No drugs, money at our house’TASMIN CUPIDO

THE daughter of the owner of an allegeddrug house in Sharedon Park has hitback, slamming all allegations as false.

Last week People’s Post reported on resi-dents’ claims that the Diamond Drive homewas a drug den and place for drug users togather (“Fear over ‘drug’ house”, People’sPost, 19 February). Muizenberg police alsoconfirmed the property to be a known drugoutlet, saying the property had previouslybeen raided.

But Charlene Jonkers (34) says the lives ofher family has been placed in danger after a

group of armed men entered the house lastTuesday, demanding that all drugs and mon-ey be handed over. She says there are nodrugs or money on the premises, but con-cedes that “two of my siblings are drug ad-dicts”.

Muizenberg police spokesperson CaptainStephen Knapp confirms theywere alerted tothe incident. “The complainant, however, re-fused to open a case and, therefore, we cannotspeculate on the matter,” he says.

The house is currently occupied by Jonk-ers’ five younger siblings, their cousin andher children. The property, previouslyowned by her mother who passed away amonth ago, is now owned by their father. “I

was so disappointed when I heard about thearticle (from neighbours),” she says.

“And I amangered that the lives ofmy fami-ly, especially the lives of the children, hasbeen put in danger and that those complain-ing did not see a need to tell me about theirconcerns. I am at the house every day andhave taken it uponmyself to dealwith all aris-ing issues. I am looking after my family.”

Jonkers, who lives in Grassy Park, admitsthe family home has previously been raidedby police, but says: “This has not happenedin the last two months. There are no drugsor money there. I am in contact with theneighbours, who inform me when problemsarise at the house.”

Asked about the illegal structure erected inthe backyard of the home, Jonkers confirmedan illegal structure had been constructed.“My cousin and her children were evictedfrom their home two years ago. My motherdecided that she should live with us and thestructure was erected,” she says.

“But when we received complaints fromneighbours, we moved them into the houseand broke down the structure.”

She encourages residents with complaintsto approachher. “Since thedeathof ourmoth-er, we have had a very tough time. I just wantpeople to leave us alone, as I can assure themthat nothing illegal is happening at the prop-erty.”

to wonderful Chinese fare.Chinese New Year, also referred to as Spring Festi

val, is based on the Lunar calendar year and fallsaround February.Within China, regional customs and traditions con

cerning the celebration of the Chinese New Year varywidely.Often, the evening preceding Chinese New Year’s

Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather forthe annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every

family to thoroughly cleanse the house to sweep awayany ill fortune and to make way for good incoming luck.Windows and doors will be decorated with red colourpapercuts and couplets with popular themes of “goodfortune”, “happiness”, “wealth” and “longevity”. Otheractivities include lighting firecrackers and givingmoneyin red paper envelopes.Although the Chinese calendar traditionally does not

use continuously numbered years, outside China itsyears are often numbered from the reign of the YellowEmperor. At least three different years numbered 1 are now

used by various scholars, making the year beginningin 2013 AD the “Chinese Year” 4711, 4710 or 4650(Source: Wikipedia).

A whole lot of Spark packed into Fab FiveLES STEPHENSON

CHEVROLET’S little Spark, thespunky 1.2 hatch that’s zoomedinto the South African automar-ket over the past couple of years,is now not only being assembledhere (in Port Elizabeth), but hasalso morphed into some newmodels.

There are now five ranging inprice from R101 500 for the ProntoVan to R136 500 for the top-end,leather-upholstered, air-connedand metal-trimmed LT Sport withits full house of luxury featuresthat, Chev claims, its competitorsjust can’t match at the price. The five were introduced by six

(fairly) well-known stars of Safri-can stage, screen and TV in a run-ning dialogue of a show at theWaveHouse in uMhlanga, near Durban, that eventually stripped the blackcloth cover off each of the five newmodels.GM SA has for the 2013 model

year Spark adopted its latest globalstyling treatment, but combinedwith that some local enhancementsfor interior and exterior trim andan extension of the model range up-wards to include the top-level Chev-rolet Spark LT specification anddownwards (in a nice way!) to add“auniqueurbandelivery solution”,the Spark Pronto. The result is a range of five budg-

et-priced, but very well-speccedsmall cars with an unmistakeableprofile almost identical to theirpredecessors.“Cosmetic improvements and en-

hanced specification aside,” GMadds, “the Spark continues to offeradvanced vehicle dynamics withtaut and responsive handling. At itsheart is a body structure with a

high level of torsional rigidity thatprovides a platform to mount thedrive-line and suspension in a waythat allows handling, stability andcomfort to be optimised.”And talking of drive-lines, the en-

gine in the 2013 cars – all of them– is still the quad-valve,60kW/108Nm fuel-injected fourthat’s done the business in theSpark since 2010, though it’s nowcalled S-TEC II and GM claims4.5litres/100km is possible, 7/100more reasonable around town. The block is good old cast-iron,

the cylinder-head is an aluminiumhome for its high-tech trimmings

and the whole lot drives through afive-on-the-floor manual transmis-sion that, on the LT Sport I drove, had a very nice action indeed. So, the underpinnings, anti-lock

brakes, steering, chassis and basicbody are common to each modelthough the head and tail lights havebeen re-styled and there’s a compre-hensive mix of steels up front tocushion any on-road unpleasant-ries. Two or four air bags are sup-plied, depending on model.GM happily admits to a 13.3sec

stroll to 100km/h (at the coast) anda top speed of 164km/h with CO²emissions at 129g/km, nine above

the tax threshold. Frankly, I’d pre-fer higher gearing through the cogs– but then I suppose GM is cateringfor the mass market that humsaround like bees in a pot-holed hiveup in Gauteng.Wouldn’t it be nice if the Gauties

and the Coasties could have achoice...? So, that’s what the Fabu-lous Five have in common; what’sthe difference between the modelsinside their 3.64m long, 1.597mwideand 1.522m tall shells?Starting with the Pronto van,

(R101 500) the rear seats have beenremoved, protection and securitybars fitted across the rear windows

andbehind the twoseats, and the re-sulting space lined. The drive trainis the sameas theother fourmodels, aircon and anti-lock brakes arestandard, but you’ll need to hook upyour own radio (or have the dealerdo it for you). No power windows orother luxuries, but you canhave thePronto for onlyR89 000 if you’re reg-istered for VAT business benefits. The Spark Campus is the basic

four-passenger model at R106 100and is minus rear wiper, roof railsand radio; like the Pronto it runs on14” steel rims shod with 165/65 rub-ber (only the LT Sport has 15” alloyrims and 165/60 tyres). The standard Spark (R113 600)

adds central locking and an alarmaswell as a radio andCD front-load-er with MP3/aux/RDS/USB.The Spark LS (R123 000) adds al-

loy rims, front fog lights, LED lightsand rear red reflectors, remote-con-trolled central locking, adjustablesteering wheel, power (and heata-ble) external mirrors, power frontwindows, steering-wheel radio con-trols and a digital data display rightof the steering wheel. The Spark LT (R136 500 and a lo-

cal development) is perhaps thebest deal of the lot at the price: withit come rear power windows, rearparking radar, side air bags, singletrapezoidal exhaust pokingthrough a stylish skirt, black alloyrims, mirror turn repeaters, blackpanels on the roof and bonnet, met-al trim around the front fog lightsand a redesigned front bumper as-sembly with a deeper lip.Oh, yes, and three different com-

binations of really cool leather andcabin finishes. Does that make fora smart small car, or what? The LT Sport pack adds four air

bags and the black roof and boot de-cals at a cost of R3100. – Wheels24

New Citroën DS ups the anteWHEELS24

THE Citroën DS range has been en-hanced with the addition of its latestmember, the DS3 VTi 82 Design.

Launched with the latest PureTech pet-rol engine, the car comes ina 1.2litre, three-cylinder model and brings the DS entry-point down to R199 900. The VTi 82 nomen-clature alludes to a power output of 82hp(61kW).

The car’s fuel consumption is at4.6litres/100km and with emissions of107g/km it doesn’t incur any CO² penalty.

The new addition to the DS3 line bringsthe engine offerings to four for 2013: the 1.6-litre petrol models continue unchanged inboth the VTi120 and THP155 (115 kW) guis-es while turbodiesel fans can opt for the e-

HDi Airdream 90 engine – introduced latein 2012 and featuring fuel-saving stop/starttechnology.

The DS3 has been the main contributorin steering the overall DS line’s sales toover 300 000 units in three years since itslaunch. Local sales have played their rolein attaining this figure with sales of thethree-door hatch exceeding more than1000. A wider colour palette is being of-fered, with metallic grey and blue as newadditions to the roof colours over andabove the black and white roof options.

A three-dimensional effect for the diodelighting of the rear clusters are akeydiffer-entiator for 2013.

Citroën’s general manager, marketing,Grant Bowring said: “The DS3 is a highlydesirable car, with unrivalled emotionalappeal and now it is far more attainable

thanks to the introduction of the 1.2 VTiDesign. It is a worthy bearer of the DSbadge, and combines style, innovation andtechnology in equal measure.”

Colour and texturing of leather trim canbe customised and the car comes with afour-year/60 000km service plan as stand-ard. An optional Freedrive programme isavailable, in terms of which the serviceplancanbe converted to a fullmaintenanceplan at point of sale.

Citroën managing director Didier Ger-ard said: “The DS Line and the DS3 in par-ticular have been amassive hit worldwide. With the arrival of the DS3 Cabrio in duecourse, we will present South African con-sumerswith a range of carswhich offer un-rivalled panache and style with high levelsof comfort, control and safety whilst beinga pleasure to own and drive.”

NIFTY: The new Citroën DS3 VTi 82.

Counting costof adaptingWHEELS24

MANY drivers think that running a car onnatural or fossil fuel instead of petrol or dieselwill pay off in terms of lower fuel costs. Ac-cording to a leading German car magazine, however, the switchover only generates sav-ings if a motorist covers at least 13 000km.

Which, of course, most drivers do.There are two types of fuel available: com-

pressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petro-leum gas (LPG). Generally CNG is more ex-pensive at the pumps than LPG although itburns more efficiently and is, therefore, moreeconomical overall.

Many cars can be adapted to run on LPGwhereasmostCNG-poweredcars aredesignedand built from new to run on said fuel. Thecost to convert to LPG varies widely betweenmodels.

CNG cars are considerably more expensivethan their petrol or diesel counterparts.Auto Strassenverkehr magazine calculated

that in some cases a car owner would have toclock up a hefty 150 000km annually in a natu-ral fuel-powered car to recoup the outlay.

The magazine compared 16 LPG-convertedand CNG models and assumed a yearly use of15 000km and 30 000km for each. In each casethe cost of conversion or loan finance in thecase of the new cars was weighed up againstthe fuel savings.

Of the LPG models, the Opel Zafira 1.4 LPGhad the best results, allowing the driver to ful-ly cover the extra costs from 13 000km a yearon. The Dacia Logan MCV 1.6 MPI LPG startsto pay for itself from 19 000km and its Duster1.6 sister from 20 000km.

Among the more expensive CNG cars, theZafira Tourer begins to recoup the higher out-lay provided the driver covers at least24 000km a year.

Goliath skatesfor gold gloryLIAM MOSES

IT IS the adrenaline that Michaila Go-liath loves about figure skating – thefeelingof freedomwhileglidingacrossthe ice and the rush of perfecting ajump.

Goliath has been skating since the ageof five and recently achieved the biggestaccomplishment of her fledgling career. She was selected to both the national nov-ice (under-15) and junior (under-19)teams.

The Athlone teenager will travel to Hel-sinki, Finland, to compete in the JuniorSynchronised Skating World Champion-ships from Thursday 7 to Saturday 9March. She will also compete in the Tro-phy d’ Ecosse in Dumphries, Scotland, from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 March withthe novice team.

Goliath is looking forward to testingherself against her counterparts fromsome the top skating countries in theworld. “I’m excited to skate against thebest teams in the world. It’s also nerve-wracking, because you don’t want to messup, so you have to concentrate,” she says.

“We are going to do our best, but (I can-not predict) whether we will do good orbad, because we don’t know the (skills, strengths and weaknesses of the) otherteams.”

Goliath started skating as a hobby, butstarted taking the sport seriously when

she joined a club. She has represented Western Province

at several national events, receiving herSouth African colours at an internationalcompetition in France in 2011.

The 13-year-old has had to make severalsacrifices since taking the sport serious-ly. She is home-schooled to allow hermore training time, while she says thesport has also taken its toll on her physi-cally.

“I have had many injuries – I brokeboth my ankles and my arm, I have tornboth my Achilles tendons, my groin anda shoulder ligament, and hurt my wrist,”says Goliath.

“I split my chin, on the same place, twice. Your hands get sore from fallingand hit your head and face. I broke oneof my ankles twice.”

She adds many people would be sur-prised by the level of skill and fitnessneeded to be a figure skater.

“My coach says it encompasses allsports. You need be flexible like gymnast, you have to be super fit, you have to bean actress and you need to interpret mu-sic. Figure skating is everything, exceptswimming.”

This will be the first time a South Afri-can junior synchronised skating teamwill compete internationally.

All the skaters will have to carry thecost of the trip. Anyone interested insponsoring Goliath can phone her moth-er, Charmaine Goliath, on 082 978 8923.

don’t have much information on the opposi-tion, so you have to shift the focus to yourgame,” he says.“In theWPSuper LeagueA you have video

footage of every team, so you can follow themand see what they are doing. In this competi-tion you have new teams and you don’t knowthem, so you come on the day and you carryout your plan. If your carry out your planwell enough then things are going to go theway they did for us today.”

Walmers showed clear signs of rustinessin the opening minutes of the fixture and al-lowed the visitors to open the scoring aroundthe ninth minute. However, they soon found their feet and

went into the half-time break leading 20-12after two converted tries and two penalties. The SK Walmers pack gained ascendancy

in the second-half, building a platform fromwhich their dangerous backline could at-tack. The visitors managed to cross thewhitewash twice, but also conceded fourtries in the second-half.Labeeb Levy, SKW director of coaching,

was pleased with his team’s defensive per-formance despite conceding twice.“I’m actually quite happy because their

tries came from our mistakes. They kickedtwo balls through and then came to score. Itwas two long range tries,” says Levy.“There were a few line-breaks and a few

errors initially, but I can’t fault the team forthe tries. They didn’t get their tries by gain-ing momentum and applying pressure –that’s how we scored.”The bonus-point victory leaves SK Walm-

ers with five points and in second place onthe Pool A table, behind Jonsson CollegeRovers – who won both of their matches.Walmers will next play Aveng Moolmans

Sishen in the Northern Cape town of Kathuat 16:00 on Saturday 2 March.

The future of cycling is brightLIAM MOSES

THE president of Cycling South Africa(CSA) believes the next national cyclingchampion could come from a disadvantagedbackground.William Newman, CSA president, said

this when he attended an event hosted atPhoenix High School in Manenberg on Fri-day, where 165 cycling kits and 60 bicycleswhere donated, by the Sports Trust, toschools fromhistorically disadvantaged are-as.The Trust, in partnership with Nedbank,

has donated 656 bicycles to similar schoolssince its cycling development programmewas established in 2005.Newman, who became involved in cycling

while growing up in Lansdowne, believesthe programme could help to redress the cur-rent imbalance in cycling.“We still need to do a lot ofwork to get com-

munities from disadvantaged areas partici-pate in the sport,” he says.“CSA has a focus on transformation and

development, and aims to break down thosebarriers to get more people involved in thesport. That’s why these programmes are soimportant to us, because it takes the sportto the communities and provides those op-portunities to youths from those communi-ties.”Newmanadds that cyclinghadabigger fol-

lowing in disadvantaged communities dur-ing apartheid than it currently does. The bicycles and cycling equipment were

donated to 13 schools, including Beacon Hilland Oval North high schools in Mitchell’sPlain, Crystal High in Hanover Park, Laven-der Hill High and host school Phoenix High.Phoenix first benefited from the pro-

gramme in July last year, when they re-ceived their first bicycles and equipmentfrom the Trust and formed a cycling club.Chadwin Jutzen (17), a Manenberg resi-

dent and Phoenix High pupil, is one of thebeneficiaries of the programme.“I like cycling and it keeps me away from

trouble. Before I started cycling I was in-volved in a lot of bad things. Not really badthings, but I used to be the cause of a lot oftrouble at home,” says Jutzen.

“When I joined the cycling club I saw eve-rythingwent away and therewas no trouble.I saw that I was enjoyingmy life and cycling.Gangsterism is rife inManenberg, so cyclingkeeps me away from that.”Jutzen is currently training three to four

times a week for his first Pick n Pay CapeArgus Cycle Tour and hopes to cycle profes-sionally in the future.Newman says he shares Jutzen’s desire

and believes it is a possibility.“I would like to see a national or world

champion come through this system in thefuture,” he says.“That’s the roleCSAneeds toplay;weneed

to ensure that we give these youngsters theopportunity to go through to provincial, na-tional and international level. I think it is atangible goal.“I definitely believe that, looking around

this room, here must be champions – young-sterswhowill go on to represent our countryon the international stage and be Olympicchampions. The talent is here – we just needto nurture it.”

Funding planfor youngbaseball playersLIAM MOSES

A NEW initiative by the hostsof the 2013 South AfricanBaseball Union Inter Region-al Tournament (IRT) couldease the financial burden onjunior baseball players acrossthe Peninsula.

The tournament’s local organ-ising committee (LOC) has initi-ated plans to start a fund, usingthe profits made from entry feesat the tournament, to supportthe participation of junior West-ern Province teams at futuretournaments.LOC chairperson Darrel

Jones says: “When you were se-lected for aprovincial sideprevi-ously, you had to pay your ownway.Nowweare trying to gener-ate money at the gate or fromvendor sales at the field to startan IRT fund,” he says.“The idea is to generate funds

for juniors and, if it’s successful,we want to see if we can supportthe other age groups as well.”Jones adds the LOC will re-

main in operation for four years,to manage and grow the fund onbehalf of the Baseball Associa-tion of the Western Province(BAWP). He says the idea couldbe replicated by other host prov-inces should it be is successful. This year’s IRT will be hosted

by VOB Baseball Club at the

Chucker Road Sports Complexfrom Saturday 30 March to Sat-urday 6 April. Players from oth-er provinces will still have topay for their own transport andaccommodation. Two other baseball clubs also

based at Chucker Road,Lansdowne Eagles and Batts-wood, will host the tournamentalongside VOB.TheLOCestimates the tourna-

ment cost for the three clubswillamount to R300 000, but Jonessays it’s up to the clubs to ensurethey recoup their investment.“The idea is for the three clubs

to generate a profit with salesand activities at their clubhous-es. They will be running foodstalls and selling beverages,” hesays.“From a club perspective, we

will try andensure that the clubsgenerate a profit. Then, withprofits from the gates and thevendors, we will try ensure thatthe funds is channelled in toBAWP IRT fund.”The LOC will also have to pay

theCity of CapeTown for the useof the fields and cover the cost ofother expenses, such as wastemanagement and security serv-ices.There is currently no tourna-

ment sponsors. Anyone interest-ed in sponsoring the tournamentcan phone Maritha Williams on073 490 9291.
