PDMSS CARING COMMUNITY NEWS Together we make a difference Dear Family and Friends of PDMSS, What an impressive storytelling assembly we had last week! Michael Katz came and told stories about the character traits of fairness, trustworthiness, and respect. Our students were shown what these traits look like in action, how important it is to show patience and to listen to those around us. Michael told the children that we listen using our eyes (looking at the person speaking), ears, mouth (not interrupting), bodies (sitting or standing facing the person), and our brains. Telling the truth and being fair with others is easy to make clear to young children. I think the hardest character trait to explain is respect. Michael’s stories did a great job giving concrete examples of what respectful behavior looks likes. For example, when you take the time to listen to one another you are showing respect. When a child follows the directions given to them by an adult, they are showing respect. The most important example was this: We all think things we shouldn’t say out loud and you show respect to others by not saying them! All these pearls of wisdom were delivered through stories that were quite entertaining. The staff enjoyed themselves as much the students did! Jump for Heart was in full swing this week. The students had a great time jumping during P.E. to keep their hearts strong. Alexia, from the Heart Association, explained to the students the three steps for keeping heart healthy: exercise for 60 minutes a day, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and don’t’ smoke. Cosimo and Tuesday participated in Jump for Heart to honor their grandfather who is in his mid nineties and recently had a heart procedure. He is now expected to live into the 100’s! Finn called over 80 people and raised more than $1,000 for the American Heart Association! I want to say thank you to everyone for participating in this great community service project. So what’s happening at PDMSS this coming week? I’m so happy you asked. We are participating in National Recycling Week! Your child can bring bottles, plastic only please, to their classrooms to be Jump for Heart in action!

PDMSS CARING COMMUNITY NEWS

Together we make a difference

Dear Family and Friends of PDMSS,

What an impressive storytelling assembly we had last week! Michael Katz

came and told stories about the character traits of fairness, trustworthiness, and

respect. Our students were shown what these traits look like in action, how

important it is to show patience and to listen to those around us. Michael told

the children that we listen using our eyes (looking at the person speaking), ears,

mouth (not interrupting), bodies (sitting or standing facing the person), and our

brains.

Telling the truth and being fair with others is easy to make clear to young

children. I think the hardest character trait to explain is respect. Michael’s stories

did a great job giving concrete examples of what respectful behavior looks likes. For example, when you

take the time to listen to one another you are showing respect. When a child follows the directions given

to them by an adult, they are showing respect. The most important example was this: We all think things

we shouldn’t say out loud and you show respect to others by not saying them! All these pearls of wisdom

were delivered through stories that were quite entertaining. The staff enjoyed themselves as much the

students did!

Jump for Heart was in full swing this week. The students had a great time jumping during P.E. to

keep their hearts strong. Alexia, from the Heart Association, explained to the students the three steps for

keeping heart healthy: exercise for 60 minutes a day, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and don’t’ smoke.

Cosimo and Tuesday participated in Jump for Heart to honor their grandfather who is in his mid nineties

and recently had a heart procedure. He is now expected to live into the 100’s! Finn called over 80 people

and raised more than $1,000 for the American Heart Association! I want to say thank you to everyone for

participating in this great community service project.

So what’s happening at PDMSS this coming week? I’m so happy you asked. We are participating in

National Recycling Week! Your child can bring bottles, plastic only please, to their classrooms to be

Jump for Heart in action!

PDMSScollected and recycled. Students can also place their plastic bottles in

the cardboard recycling boxes that will be placed around the school.

Part of the stewardship toward our planet that we hope to instill in our

students is the proper disposable of plastic and other waste.

Remember, we teach our students to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

There are three more things happening this week! Reflections

Art entries are due on Wednesday, November 13th. Please bring them

to the office. Our Parent Education opportunities being on the 13th as

well. Here’s a chance to meet with other parents to discuss parenting

issues and other topics. We are having a Holiday Boutique this Friday

so you can begin your holiday shopping and benefit PDMSS. There are

flyers included in this newsletter that give all the details for these

events.

Twin day is coming this Friday, November 15th! We call it twin

day but it’s really more of a dress alike day. You can get together with

as many friends as you want and dress the same. Be creative, have

fun, and show your school spirit this Friday!

I’ve included photos from the storytelling assembly. More

photos from Jump for Heart will be included in next weeks newsletter.

Have a great three day weekend and remember, my door is always

open.

With warm regards,

Rebecca Johnson

Dear PDMSS Families: To date, we have 102 families out of 182 who have generously contributed to our Direct Investment Campaign. We remain ever hopeful that your family will choose to invest in your child’s education as well. Please know that a contribution at any level is appreciated and will be fully utilized to continue the programs at PDMSS. District-wide fundraising is not yet in effect. Every dollar you donate stays here and will be utilized to fund the following programs for THIS SCHOOL YEAR: Our Marine Science Lab and Teacher, Technology and Tech Teacher, Library, Music Supplies, Art Supplies, Classroom Instructional Materials, Field Trips, and most importantly, the third trimester of salaries for all of our Instructional Aides and Reading Specialists. We have already raised almost $300,000; BUT $200,000 is still needed to continue with our programs. Programs and Staff will be cut if we can’t fully fund the budget. Your 100% tax-deductable investment in your child’s education is needed. Please take a moment to think about how much your family can afford to give, and give today. We have several options for payment so consider: a check, credit card or our very popular monthly payment plan, which allows you to extend your generous contribution over the 10 month period of the school year. Together, we can ensure that we provide our children with high quality educational programs that they deserve. Thank you in advance for helping the PDMSS PTA reach our aggressive goal of 100% participation. Sincerely, Your PDMSS PTA Executive Board Members Michelle Russo Ali Thonson Michele Tuturici Susan Booker Barbie Herron Marieka Kline Courtney Rayner Carolyn Martinez Roui Israel Trudy Perry-Datt Kristina Kell Lori Webster Kathryn Randall Berger Shapiro

Dear Parents/Guardians,

WorkAbility/Transition Partnership Program (TPP), key components of the School

to Career Program, are a joint effort among high schools, community agencies and local businesses that can help students make a successful transition from school to the world of work. The program benefits the participating students in a number of ways: students acquire entry-level job training and experience in an actual work environment while attending school; they gain personal satisfaction as a productive member of the community; receive exposure to a variety of career opportunities to guide their educational goals; and build interpersonal traits and self-confidence that will serve them well over the course of their personal and professional lives.

We need your help securing businesses that are able to provide hands-on job training for our students who are receiving special education services. The students will receive continuous support and follow-up from the job developers while completing these training opportunities. The program covers students’ worker’s compensation insurance as well as some salary support while they are training at the work site. The program’s goals are to create direct hire or job training opportunities that will support students in making a smooth transition to the world of work and that will help students choose an appropriate related educational program.

Please contact us if you or someone you know is interested in becoming a business partner that can give these students the opportunity to train and gain work experience.

We thank you in advance for joining us in educating our young adults and helping to make their transition to the adult world a little easier. Please use any of the following information to contact us:
