Class Placement Procedures

The time of year has arrived when we consider placing students in classes for the next school year. As we begin assigning students to next year’s teachers, we gather information from various sources that help us get a more complete picture of the learning needs of each student. This year’s classroom teachers will supply a major part of this information. We also gather information from other specialists in the school such as general music, physical education and art. If appropriate, the special education teachers and/or literacy teacher will also provide input.

We would also like to incorporate input from parents, if they choose to complete our Class Placement Form. This optional input helps us see the child through the eyes of the parent. This view may be somewhat different than the classroom teacher. If you are interested in providing your input to this process, please stop by the office to obtain the form.

The form must be completed and returned to your child's classroom

teacher no later than Friday, April 6, 2018. No forms will be accepted

after this date. Also, as we have done in past years, we will not

acknowledge specific teacher requests.

Hello Flatirons Trip Trackers!

3/23 - $ distribution during lunch in the cafeteria.

Here’s a LINK to the list of participating businesses (where to spend the $)..

Color Me Mine pottery studio, in support of Trip Tracker, each month will

award a gift certificate for a Kids Night Out at Color Me Mine to a Flatirons

student whose name is drawn randomly from those reporting trips! Winners

will be notified.

Please support the Annual Trip Tracker Auction with an item donation. The

Auction (online) will open on April 2! Auction Donation LINK. The auction is

an important part of how we keep Trip Tracker happening each year.

If you haven't participated in Trip Tracker before, your student earns money

that they can spend at awesome businesses all over Boulder just by walking, riding,

carpooling or busing to school. If you haven't registered yet,

visit: bvsd.org/tracker. Please help us reduce traffic congestion on 7th Street

and help improve air quality. You can even earn $ by parking a few blocks away and

walking the last bit to school!

Introducing Parent Hosted Parties As A New Fundraising Opportunity!

At this year’s The Party, we will be offering parent Hosted Parties as a new way to drive revenue for Flatirons Elementary. Hosted Parties are essential to the success of the Auction. They are fun, extremely popular, and a great opportunity for community building! Whether you host a party or just sign up to come to a party, you are sure to have a fabulous time as you mix and mingle with other Flatirons families that you may have never met. What are Hosted Parties? They are “sign-up” events that parents, or a group of parents, agree to host for as many people as they find appropriate for the specific activity/party. Attendees can be adults, kids or a combination of the two. The hosts cover all expenses of the party, and 100% of the funds raised by the event benefit our school. Prices range from $20 to $50+ per person depending on the event, with most adult parties falling in the $25-$80 per person range and most kid parties in the $10-$40 range. Guests will then sign up for the parties when they attend The Party on April 28. Parties don’t need to be elaborate. They can be as simple as sharing a hobby or conducting an information session or as fancy as you wish. It is entirely up to you. An example of a party we have in the works:

College Keg Party – hosted by 3-4 1st and 2nd grade families – Saturday, August 25 Held in a private alley, guests will have the opportunity to socialize with fellow Flatirons parents while wearing their college colors, playing beer pong, eating pizza and more.

Other examples of parties may include (feel free to be as creative as you like – these are meant to help kick start the ideas):

Moms workout at local venue followed by appetizers & drinks post workout

Cinco de Mayo party

Indoor soccer party

Backyard bouncy house / sweet cow ice cream party

Salsa dancing demonstration and lessons

Back to school backyard BBQ

Bluegrass house concert

Wine/ dinner pairing party

Dads poker night party

Rock climbing party with pizza

Group road bike ride and end at local brewery for lunch/drinks

Guided hike up Bear Peak If you are interested in hosting a party, please send your party idea, the number of attendees (and whether adults, kids or both), the hosting family(ies) as well as date (if known) and location. Information can be sent to [email protected] (and Meg, Laura, Kelly, Artamis or Amy will get back to you to confirm details).

Please send us your Hosted Party ideas no later than Friday, April 6.

Thank you for your support! Let’s Party!

Flatirons Families: "Thank you for making the 2017-2018 Annual Giving Campaign a success! Please have a look at what you made possible."

Olympic minds at Flatirons Elementary are flexible, imaginative, and productive! See the kids and teachers use the iLab to engage all kinds of learners in a project-based learning unit. The kids draw on knowledge, critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and three-dimensional visualization and construction skills to design models inspired by Olympic events. Thank you, Annual Giving Campaign Committee

RESULTS ARE IN Flatirons raised $46,550 in regular donations! Then a special

one-time only surprise donation of $25,000 arrived to help us

greatly surpass our goal of $50,000.

This year, 65% of our families participated in the Annual Giving

Campaign. Widespread participation means we have a strong base

of support for our school year in and year out. We appreciate every

effort big and small in funds or time and talent. Thank you so very

much all donors. Every single one counts!

Now the focus will be shifting to The Party - a fun, adults-only

evening for staff, teachers, and parents to get together, eat, drink,

and socialize. As in previous years, there will be fundraising

activities, but you do not need to bid on anything at The Party.

The focus will be on a fun evening for everyone to get together

and celebrate another wonderful year at Flatirons and the friends

we have all made here.

Just in case, the donation link remains here.

Dear Flatirons Families:

After hearing the recent health news about our long-time PE teacher, Loren Tillotson Duggan, many of you have approached the school and PTO asking for how you can help support her. The answer is that yes, there are ways you can help! First, we have created a sign-up sheet on Help at School if you would like to volunteer to bring meals to the school for Ms. T and her family. Soups, salads, pastas and lasagnas are all good choices. Please click here see the complete list or go to https://helpatschool.org/schools/9/events/1444. In addition to meals, donating funds for a house cleaning service would be much appreciated because it is important for chemotherapy patients to have as sterile an environment as possible during their treatment. Gift cards to Whole Foods and Alfalfa’s and take-out restaurants in Boulder as well as your own personal notes of encouragement and support for Ms. T are also wonderful donation ideas! All of these cards, donations and meals can be dropped off at the Flatirons front desk. If you have any questions or other suggestions for help, please contact parent volunteer, Michele Pottratz [email protected] or Rhonda Simpson [email protected] in the school office. Thank you for your support and concern on behalf of Ms. T. Bridget Carlin & Bob Kanick, PTO Co-Chairs (Parents of Chessa [5th] & Tucker [2nd]) Email: [email protected] / Home Phone: 303-443-9880

Dear Flatirons parents,

At February’s PTO meeting this past week, Bob and I announced that we would be stepping down as your Flatirons PTO Co-Chairs at the end of this school year. Although the normal nominations process for PTO officers takes place in April and is finalized in May, we wanted to notify parents now of our intention to retire so that a new Chair could be nominated early to ease the transition at year-end.

In the recent past, this job has been run by husband and wife Co-Chairs. However, there is no reason that it needs to continue in that way. Before our two predecessors, there was an individual parent as Chair of the PTO in addition to the other officers. Our by-laws state that the PTO Board shall be comprised of a Chair, Co-Chair and Treasurer.

If you have questions about the position of PTO Chair or Co-Chair (aka Vice Chair), an interest in the role, or an idea of someone to nominate, we would love to talk with you. Feel free to engage in discussions with us even if you ultimately decide not to run for the job. You can contact us at: [email protected] or call our home number: 303-443-9880.

It has been a great experience and an honor to serve in this leadership position on behalf of the school’s parents these past two years. Thank you for the support you all have given us in this role and for everyone’s efforts in making Flatirons all it can be every day.

Sincerely,

Bridget Carlin & Bob Kanick, PTO Co-Chairs (Parents of Chessa [5th] & Tucker [2nd]) Email: [email protected] / Home Phone: 303-443-9880

Dear Families,

Did you know that cartons for milk, juice, soup, soy milk, cream and more are recyclable at home and at school? Your school is partnering with Eco-Cycle, Boulder Valley School District and the Carton Council to raise awareness about recycling all drink containers—from milk cartons and juice boxes to plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

Help your family recycle as much as possible by following the newest guidelines for recycling in

Boulder County (attached). The Carton Council has provided funding to help purchase new optical

sorting equipment, making it possible for the Boulder County Recycling Center to accept more items

(such as lids and berry containers) and recycle cartons more efficiently.

Want to know more about what happens at the factories where cartons are recycled? Watch this fun

video and visit the Carton Council website to learn all about it. In addition, check out the just-for-fun

carton recycling activities for kids following this letter.

Funded by:

Cool Carton Recycling Facts:

Recycling the paper fiber in cartons results in 74% less air pollution and 35%

less water pollution than producing new paper from trees.

The company ReWall recycles cartons into ceiling tiles, wall panels and

other materials without using glue, chemicals or water. Each truckload of

ReWall building products represents about 300,000 recycled cartons.

Cartons that contain a layer of aluminum are shelf stable, meaning the food

or drink inside doesn’t need to be refrigerated, saving energy during

transportation and storage.

Recyclable Cartons Include:

Make sure cartons are empty and rinsed.

Please don’t flatten!
