Developing leadership skills and social responsibility

ANZAC PARADE

Wednesday 29 April Borambola Excursion Year 5/6 – Due home at 3:00 pm K-2 - GYMNASTICS

Friday 1 May ASSEMBLIES: K/Stage 1 - Kangaroo Paw at 11:25am to 11:55am Stage 2/3 - Acacia at 12:00 to 12:30 pm

Thurgoona Public School Many thanks to parents and students who participated in the Anzac Day march on Saturday. It was wonderful to see so many students involved in the march. Thanks also go to staff who assisted in the supervision of students. It is a credit to our students who waited ever so patiently to participate – being second last in the march. Their behaviour whilst waiting was excellent. Stage 3 are at present at Borambola enjoying the challenges of leadership activities. They are due back tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm. If running late a note will be placed on the glass doors at the office with anticipated arrival time. Again thanks to the staff for their participation and to Mrs Ward for her organisation of such a huge event. Congratulations to Liam Rule who this week is representing our school in the NSW PSSA Riverina Basketball team. Liam is trying out for the state team as we speak. Best wishes to him for the week. Congratulations to Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 on their wonderful ‘Fun Day’ at Oddies Creek last week. Everyone had a wonderful time and the day turned out to be perfect after a dubious start – weatherwise. Thanks to Mr Clark and Miss Davis for their organisation of the day and parents who supported the event. These children are also participating in weekly gymnastic lessons – I am sure we will see some photos soon of them in action. Although PSSA is a way off starting, please check with your child to see if they are in a team. They will require correct sports uniform to be able to participate – socks are available at the canteen for soccer and AFL. Reminder: Children whose parents require them to bring a mobile phone to school for safety purposes before or after school are required to hand them in at the office on arrival to school and collect them at 3:00pm. They are kept there for safety purposes and security, clearly named, during 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Students do not need to access their phones during the school day. Should these procedures not be followed the student’s phone will be confiscated and returned on either receipt of a note from the student's parent or in person to the student's parent. Students are not to bring any electronic devices to school. If brought to school, they will be confiscated and returned to parents as per the procedures above. Please remember that if your child brings personal property to the school they do so at their own risk – schools will not accept any responsibility for loss or damage to personal property. Kind Regards Joan Courtney Relieving Principal

BUILDING RESILIENCE IN OUR CHILDREN.

Over the next few weeks I will include some thoughts from Dr Tim Elmore about building resilience in our children. This week the focus is on letting your children experience risk. This can be tricky for us parents – keeping our children safe is engrained from before they were born, which is generally a good thing! The problem comes when we are reluctant to let go and let them learn hard lessons for themselves – falling off the swings hurts and while it’s not good for a young baby, for a three year old being able to jump on the swing solo and run the risk of falling off is necessary in order to let them grow and learn. Dr Elmore explains that taking risks teaches children to make informed choices about behaviour when they are older. By not letting them take age appropriate risks, there is a good chance they won’t know how to determine good risks from bad when they are older, or they will lack confidence in themselves to try. Allowing your children to take some risks also shows them you believe in their ability to not only make choices, but recover when they fall. How do we get the balance right? How do we know when it is okay for them, to take climb to the top of the playground, walk to school alone or skateboard down the hill? The trick is to look around and let them take risks that are age appropriate. Factor in their nature – some are more cautious than others and inherently ‘look before they leap’.

HEAD LICE

Please be diligent in checking your child’s head for head lice over the coming term. By following the steps below we can minimise the impact they have on your child and their learning. The facts Head lice infestations are a common occurrence, particularly in primary schools. • about 23% of primary students have head lice at any one time • anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is • head lice move from one person's head to another via hair • head lice do not survive long when they are off a human head • head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding or carpet • head lice have built up some resistance to head lice treatments

Treatment • daily combing of white hair conditioner using a fine tooth comb is effective in getting rid of head lice

and eggs (nits) • school communities may need to hold 'check and treat' or Nitbuster days where everyone learns about

and starts treatment on the same day.

Tips for parents in reducing the spread of head lice As infestations are particularly common in primary schools, it is best to choose a treatment that can be used over time. There is no single solution to eradication, only persistence. • regularly check your children's hair • teach older children to check their own hair • tie back and braid long hair • keep a fine tooth head lice comb in the bathroom and encourage all family members to use it when

they wash their hair.
