Principal’s Message Dear Family and Friends of PDMSS, When you think of -ield trips what comes to mind? Do you envision museums, parks, maybe the arts? Well over the past few weeks our -ifth grade students have participated in a unique type of -ield trip. One aimed at changing attitudes and offering a unique experience. It’s entitled Shane’s Inspiration. Shane’s Inspiration is an interactive experience where a typically able class is paired with a special‐needs class for a day of integrated play. Our students traveled to a playground with equipment that has been specially designed to be accessible to children with a variety of disabilities. When they arrived they were introduced to their buddy for the day. They played, had lunch together, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. When they returned the students were asked to write essays about their experiences. All of them said they enjoyed themselves and that it felt good to spend time with their new friends. Here are some wonderful quotes from a few of those essays. “We had a lot in common. We both liked to play, we both liked to play music, we both liked to have a great time and we both liked to laugh.” Max “Kids with disabilities are judged because they are in wheelchairs, walking, sticks, or have crutches but I have learned from this that we should treat them with equal respect as you would treat your friends.” Ryan “It let me know that when we are around people like that we don’t have to feel awkward or strange around them. They are not really different in any way.” Olivia “I learned so much, like kids with disabilities aren’t so different than us.” Katie “I think that the experience has changed me by seeing that everyone is unique.” Emilia “They are all one of us, they are no different from us, and we are all one.” Juliette Wise words. This was a wonderful -ield trip! We are hoping that Shane’s continued on page 2 Shane’s Inspiration! TOGETHER WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE FEBRUARY 16, 2013 PDMSS CARING COMMUNITY NEWS

     January 29, 2013

We are writing to you on behalf of the students and faculty of Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School. On March 2, 2013, we will be having our sixteenth annual Marine Science Dinner, which benefits our PTA funded programs and Marine Science Lab. The event will be held at Duke’s Restaurant in Malibu.

We are seeking donations for both our silent and live auctions. A large portion of the revenue raised at this event each year is from the auctions. We would also appreciate your consideration of the various advertisement and sponsorship opportunities that are available. We are a 501(c)(3) non‐profit organization (Tax ID #23‐7010618). Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

In these days of ever decreasing, and extremely limited funding for public education, our PTA must look to its business neighbors, families, and friends to support the programs which heavily supplement school curriculum. Malibu is a small and tightly knit community. Our families support local businesses on a daily basis. Your name associated with this event will demonstrate your support of our school and commitment to our children. Your donation will help to fund all of the programs that our PTA now pays for including art, music, science, library books, classroom instructional aides, field trips, assemblies, and so much more. The Marine Science Dinner is our largest fundraising event of the year and we sincerely hope that you will join us in supporting educational opportunities for the children of our community.

Thank you for your consideration, commitment, and generosity. Please don’t hesitate to contact any of us with questions or if you’d like additional information.  Warmly,   2013 Marine Science Dinner Chairpersons,
