I need to say thank you!!! There are a few things that need to be said, 98% that are of the best way – thanking! Over the last month so many people really have gone out of their way to help make St. Lawrence O’Toole a place where people want to be. The St. Patrick’s Day Dinner was a splendid success once again, headed by Lyn Gray. Her team was so good that one of my uncles, my aunt, her brother and his wife (all of whom were first time attendees) have already told us to make their reservation for next year. The Weber Irish dancers were excellent as usual, too. No one should have left hungry. I don’t think anyone left drunk either (BONUS!). Holy Week will always be a great week, as busy as it is, for the ordained especially. Many people, though, were not only making their homes ready, many gave of their time and talents to help the liturgical celebrations in the church as good as ever. I tend to receive most of the kudos, but it should be obvious that I don’t do all of that decorating myself. I don’t put together all of the liturgies on my own either. The Arts and Environment team, under the direction of Luz Elena Klotz, outdid themselves again. The flowers and the fabrics are great. Another area that deserves praise is the Music Ministry under Michael Tan. The choir has done a lot over this past year or so, again losing some members for various reasons. Michael has done a very good job in making the ministry the best it can be. I think it’s safe to say that Michael would still love to have a few new voices, too. Someone out there has the talent. I can hear it. And we won’t make you be good enough such that you need to audition for American Idol. I also want to thank my deacons, the Lectors, the Extraordinary Ministers, Altar Servers, the Greeters, and the Ushers for doing their part to help make people feel welcome, hear the Word, receive the Lord, and teach us how to give back to God for everything He does. I need to say thanks to everyone who graced our doors, too. We didn’t have the best attendance ever around here, but many people really stepped up financially. It doesn’t mean we are out of the woods. I just have to say that as of the time I am typing this article, the Easter Collection is up over $17,000. That just shows that our community still takes sacrificial giving seriously. Like I said, it doesn’t take us out of debt, but you needed to know how I feel. GRACIAS! There is nothing but thanks for all who contributed to the success of these past few weeks. Just a reminder to keep inviting! Fr. Mike

  • 3rd Sunday of Easter Cycle B ~ LK 24:35-48 Today’s word from the Word is “understand”. When the Risen Jesus comes to visit the Apostles in the upper room He brings with Him much knowledge which He would like them to know and to “understand” with certainty. This passage tells us that perhaps there was still some uncertainty among the Apostles as to Jesus’ resurrection. When the Risen Lord appears to them we are told that “they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost.” Jesus often spoke to them about the necessity of His death upon the Cross. Not only did Jesus die to free He us from sin but also to reveal the Resurrection and the promise of eternal life which He brings to all those who believe. It would seem that the Apostles were aware and “understood” that Jesus had died.

They just couldn’t grasp that Jesus had risen from the dead. The two men who are referred to as the ones who “were still speaking” when the Risen Jesus stood before them, were the two men who encountered the Risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus. We recall how they had met Jesus as they were trudging home in sadness on the road and how they invited Jesus in to their home without knowing or “understanding” that Jesus had risen and that it was He with whom they dined that evening. They finally recognize Him in the breaking of the bread. They had run back to Jerusalem and were telling the Apostles of their encounter with Jesus. They just could not fully grasp or “understand” that Jesus was indeed risen. His visit to them would bring them to know and “understand” the truth about His Resurrection. That “understanding” is essential for them to have if they were to truly believe in Jesus as risen. This knowledge and “understanding” would lead them to faith. That faith would lead them to

the peace Jesus wants to give them. So, what was it that Jesus wanted them to know and “understand” in order to have faith and peace? Their encounter with the Risen Lord taught them the reality of the Resurrection. Jesus did rise and was with them; even eating a piece of baked fish in front of them. It taught them the necessity of the cross. Jesus had to die and rise. It taught them the urgency of the mission on which would send them. It was urgent that all people should repent and receive forgiveness. It taught them what Jesus meant when He said He would send an Advocate. Last week’s Gospel reminded us that Jesus breathed on them and told them “to receive the Holy Spirit”. It all comes together for them in this upper room encounter with the Risen Lord.

From Reverend David Green. Rev. Green is the pastor of St. Martha’s Catholic Church in East Providence, Rhode Island. He is also the Northeast regional moderator of the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

April 15, 2018 - Third Sunday of Easter: In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus explains the

meaning of the scriptures. Like the disciples, when we offer and receive forgiveness our hearts burn because we encounter the risen Christ within us.

Have you considered answering the call to “help the poor find forgiveness and healing in their life” by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

Living Stewardship April 15, 2018 3rd Sunday of Easter “Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with

you.’ But they were startled and frightened…” - LUKE 24:36-37 Throughout the day we have many opportunities to “see the face of Jesus” in others and to “be the face of Jesus” to others. Do we take that opportunity to provide “peace” to those we encounter or are we afraid of what others will think of us and do nothing? Pray for the strength to live a “God-centered” life and not a “self-centered” life. STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Good Stewards Loving Father, you alone are the source of every good gift. We praise you for all your gifts to us, and we thank you for your generosity. Everything we have, and all that we are, comes from you. Help us to be grateful and responsible. You have called us to follow your son, Jesus, without counting the cost. Send us your Holy Spirit to give us courage and wisdom to be faithful disciples. We commit ourselves to being good stewards. Help us to be grateful, accountable, generous, and willing to give back with increase. Help us to make stewardship a way of life.

We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. AMEN PLANNED GIVING Remember St. Lawrence O’Toole in your estate plans. St. Lawrence O’Toole has been blessed over the years to have received some generous gifts from parishioners and friends who have included our parish in their estate plans. If you would like to include SLOT in your plans, please contact the Parish Office.

Reflecting on God’s Word Some vaccinations only last so long. After a predictable amount of time the immunity wears off and people are susceptible to the same old disease again. That’s when it’s time for a booster shot. It seems that we also need booster shots for faith. Baptism alone is not enough. The joy and peace that filled our communities two weeks ago are probably starting to flag and our old selves may be

starting to re-emerge. We need a weekly dose of Resurrection appearances, in the Eucharist we share. All three of this week’s readings as well as the psalm point out the weakness of our human faith. Yet they emphasize the forgiveness and blessing that are always available to those who turn to “Jesus Christ the righteous one.” Can we recognize ourselves in Luke’s Gospel today? Do we realize how deeply we depend on our weekly “booster shot” of the Eucharist to remember and reclaim the saving presence of the risen Lord? —Virginia Stillwell Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. Living God’s Word The Eucharist is meant to energize us to take Christ’s presence out into the world. It may be easy to see ourselves in today’s scriptures as the weak sinners, but we should also envision ourselves in the roles of Peter, John, and Luke. In the Eucharist Jesus feeds us and sends us to “preach in His name to all the nations” (Luke 24:47). We are His witnesses. Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO The Cross of San Damiano ~~ St. Francis of Assisi prayed before the cross and heard the Lord say to him “Renew My Church”

A Prayer for “Renew My Church”

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us

May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations.
