p 2 October 29, 2017

Very Proud There are so many things to bring up this week. I just don’t feel like there is enough space to do it all justice.

First, I want to say that it was 17 years ago on October 28th that my classmates and I were ordained transitional deacons. Three of us had been together for 5 years of our formation at the seminary, the other seven joined us along the way. Our class had kept a “perfect record” of all of us still ordained for our first 11 years. Since then, we have lost two. We have all had our trials along the way, but we are still really in a good way. Congrats to my classmates. Let’s keep it up and keep trying to make the Archdiocese of Chicago as strong as ever.

I also want to say how proud I am of our deacons. As I mentioned last week, I thought Deacons Ed and Bill did great jobs in their weekends for our homily series on Respect for Life. Deacon John was the one I had not heard up to the time of that article, but he didn’t disappoint. I think it speaks volumes to people when they can see that a homilist is passionate about his subject and the words and stories he chooses to use. I remember being criticized heavily while at my first assignment and writing out every homily and reading it word for word. It took time for me to be comfortable with preaching without a piece of paper in front of me. Then my worst nightmare came true – I began to just ramble. I simply wanted to be intelligible – no stuttering or stammering for words or losing my place or forgetting a point. Actually, I was even more self-conscious when I went to the Cathedral, yet, even there I became comfortable enough to move away from my notes. But, I digress. Kudos to Bill, Ed, and John on their preaching in support of human life, born and unborn from conception to natural death.

Another thanks goes out to so many people who are involved in so many different ministries around our fine Parish. Even though the school closed nearly two and a half years ago, so many people have stepped up to keep the good pieces of remaining ministries intact and even flourishing again in some cases. There have been many people who have remained involved in the same ministries for long periods of time; there have also been many people who have opened their hearts to get involved in newer initiatives. But there is a particular reason I bring up our ministries.

Sure we can always use more people to give of their time, talent, and treasure, but I want to congratulate Ms. Lyn Gray for being the recipient of our Christifidelis Award this year. Each year, the Archdiocese asks us, as pastors, to choose a person, couple or even a family who has given much of themselves. Lyn joined the parish in 2014 and hit the ground running with a lot of enthusiasm. She immediately began her volunteering in a variety of capacities – she has been a religious education teacher, the chairperson for the Taste of O’Toole and a few other social events, a co-chairperson for our monthly café, an altar server as often as needed, and a lector. Some of these areas slowed down briefly when her husband Bill was terminally ill, but Lyn’s smiling face has been and will continue to be important for us for years to come (God willing).

Past recipients from our parish have included Joan Abbott, George and Mary Louise Gingras, Mary Olney, and Sharon Twardowski. The ceremony this year is Sunday October 29th at Holy Name Cathedral. I know that none of our ministers in any ministries ever got involved in their ministry for the recognition. It’s good to know that there are still a lot of good people around here. I also know that there will people who will always try to help St. Lawrence O’Toole to grow, each using their gifts and God-given talents. God Bless, Fr. Mike

All Souls’ Day is Thursday, November 2. We will be having our All Souls’ Day Mass at 7:00 PM on November 2. In addition to Mass, our “Our Souls” banner will be out in the Church, and we will again be

having some touches from the Mexican celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). El Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), a Mexican

celebration, is a day to celebrate, remember, and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations, flowers, candy calaveras (skeletons and skulls), and parades. It is believed that the spirit of the dead visit their families on October 31 and leave on November 2. In order to celebrate, the families make altars and place offerings of food such as pan de muertos baked in shapes of skulls and figures, candles, incense, yellow marigolds known as cempazuchitl and most importantly a photo of the departed soul are placed on the altar. In honor of this tradition, we will be creating an ‘altar’ for you to bring pictures of your departed loved ones to display, and be prayed for, during the month of November. Please bring a framed picture of a departed loved one with your name and phone number on it to be placed on the "altar". We will collect these pictures in baskets starting next weekend, October 14 & 15 and will continue to collect them until this Sunday, October 29. All pictures may be picked up the weekend of November 25 & 26.

October 29, 2017 ~ Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time:

In this Sunday’s Gospel we find the truth that loving God isn’t merely a matter of fervor in our hearts, but that it must be expressed in doing good for the sake of others. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to show that we indeed love our neighbors by assisting families in need with food. Thank You!

Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL 60611-2030 312.534.8230 archchicago.org October 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On behalf of our brothers and sisters who have been severely affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, it is my wish to sincerely thank you for the tremendous outpouring of support you have shown them during this challeng-ing time. Banding together to answer the cry of those in need, the Archdiocese of Chicago community has seamlessly partnered with Catholic Charities USA, local parishes, and schools to bring financial, physical, and spiritual aid to those who have lost so much in the Gulf Coast. The September 9-10 collection raised more than $600,000 for these efforts, a true testament to the compassion of the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Now it is time once again to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters affected by natural disasters that have occurred over the last few weeks, including Hurricane Maria and the earthquakes in Mexico. As requested by the USCCB, all parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago are invited to take up a second collection at all Masses on the weekend October 28-29.

Proceeds from this special collection will support humanitarian and recovery efforts in Mexico and Puerto Rico. There is also an option for your parish to donate directly to these efforts. To donate, please visit http://pvm.archchicago.org/hurricane or mail contributions to the following address. Please make all checks payable to the Natural Disaster Emergency Appeal.

ATTN: Natural Disaster Emergency Appeal 3525 South Lake Park Avenue Chicago, IL 60653

It is my prayer that we continue to support those affected by these natural disasters through both prayer and action. With every good wish, I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

We will take up this Special Second Collection this weekend, October 28 & 29. Thank you for your generosity to our fellow brothers and sisters that have been affected by the many natural

disasters in Mexico and Puerto Rico. There are not envelopes for this Collection.

It’s A GuyThingYou are invited to join other

Catholic men to learn how we apply our faith at work, withfamily & everyday lifeexperiences, through prayer, faith sharing the Word of God, & Church teaching. We meet every 1st & 3rd Wednesdays @ 7:00 PM, in the Parish Office . DUE TO THE ALL SAINTS’ HOLY DAY THIS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, WE WILL NOT MEET . Café O’Toole

is next weekend—November 4 & 5.

November’s hospitality is hosted by

The St. Lawrence

O’Toole Parish Staff.

Thank you for your generous support on World Mission Sunday. While only some are called to visit mission dioceses, all of us are called by Baptism to support the Church’s missionary work through prayer, action and sacrifice. In this way we build bonds among each other sustaining our life in Christ, and we are transformed through solidarity as Christ's

missionary disciples.

1st FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION is this Friday, November 3 “only in adoration can a profound and genuine reception mature. And it is precisely this personal encounter with the

Lord that then strengthens the social mission contained in the Eucharist, which seeks to break down not only the walls that separate the Lord and ourselves, but also and especially the walls that separate us from one another." - Pope Benedict XVI (Sacramentum Caritatis) Next Eucharistic Adoration is Friday, November 3, from 9:15 AM-5:00 PM

Living Stewardship October 29, 2017 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all

your soul and with all your mind.” – MATTHEW 22:37 Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you have and everything you are is a gift from God? The good news – it’s not too late to put God first in your life in all things. STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Discipleship Lord Jesus Christ, you call us to follow you as disciples. Help us to respond wholeheartedly without counting the cost. Lord Jesus Christ, you invite us to proclaim your gospel of hope and salvation here at home and to all nationals and peoples. Teach us to be faithful evangelists in word and in action Lord Jesus Christ, you have given us every spiritual and material blessing. Show us how to share our gifts with others, and inspire us always to follow your example of generous self-giving.

Gracious Lord, teach us to give with a joyous and grateful heart that we may provide hope, consolation, and pastoral care to your people and thus give glory and honor to your holy name. AMEN PLANNED GIVING Remember St. Lawrence O’Toole in your estate plans. St. Lawrence O’Toole has been blessed over the years to have received some generous gifts from parishioners and friends who have included our parish in their estate plans. If you would like to include SLOT in your plans, please contact the Parish Office.

A Prayer for Those Serving in the Military

Please contact the Parish Office @ 748-6090 x100 or [email protected], and let us know the name of your dear one and they will be remembered in the prayers of our community and the name posted in the bulletin. Reflecting on God’s Word In an article on “successful aging” (New Theology Review, November, 2010), Dr. Lawrence M. Lenoir proposes that the art of giving and receiving love is at the heart of growing old gracefully. Research shows that being in a loving relationship quiets the demons of depression and despair. So, if you want to be healthy, be loving. Jesus would agree.

The rabbis of Jesus’ day argued about which was the greatest commandment of the six hundred thirteen in the Torah. When the Pharisees asked Jesus, he answered that what God wanted most from the chosen people who had been liberated from slavery and called to live in a covenantal relationship was a return of the love God showed to them. This love has two faces: loving God totally and loving one another as one loves oneself. Loving is a contagious activity. If you are loved, you tend to be loving. Paul is sounding this note when he writes to the Thessalonians about how they became imitators of him and his fellow evangelizers Timothy and Silvanus, and of the Lord himself, receiving the word and living in faith, joy, and love for each other, because they believed in God’s love for them, revealed in Christ. Our love must flow outward in compassionate generosity. The Lord called on Israel to show its love by not oppressing aliens, not wronging weak orphans and defenseless widows, and not extorting the poor by demanding interest on loans. No less is asked of those who have received the Holy Spirit and live in community with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That’s us. Love one another.

Living God’s Word It is difficult to love, especially when we have been hurt by others. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring you the “fire of God’s love.” Call on the Spirit to deepen your awareness of God’s love for you, shown by giving us life and the gifts of faith, hope, and love.

A Prayer for “Renew My Church”

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us
