Holy Week

The above digital images were “artwork” that I did on the basic “Paint” accessory on my computer. From palms on the left to the Cross on the right, it’s my interpretation of the depth of the week. The grey things in between are supposed to be stone. They just represent the “road.” And yes, I am aware that I left out Holy Thursday and the Eucharist (including the Mandatum – the Washing of Feet). I think it’s important for me to keep the bigger picture in mind.

I’ve brought up Mel Gibson’s movie “The Passion of the Christ” several times in the last several years. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is at the time Jesus is being crucified; bystanders (I think a couple of the apostles) are recalling the happenings from just hours earlier at the First Eucharist. The power of Jesus teaching the apostles “This is my body” while He is being hoisted on the Cross is just stunning. Anyone who would try to tell me with a straight face that they were not touched by it when they saw it, I would be sure to tell them they needed to go to confession.

Now, it’s too late to try and put something together in the immediate weeks, and I apologize to the person who made the suggestion, but I’d like to know if people might be interested in having movie nights. Some parishes that have done movie nights have only shown movies with religious themes or the like. I like some of those as well, but I tend to prefer a good comedy. Now, that is not saying that we wouldn’t show some of the religious-themed movies, but it would not necessarily be the case. On those days there might even be time for some discussion. However, I watch movies for their entertainment value. Years ago, while still in the seminary, two of my friends went to see “The Devil’s Advocate” with Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. Two of us really enjoyed it. The other guy simply said “I counted 22 heresies in the movie.” That is just not me. Realistically, I know not every movie director is Catholic.

I’d like to hear from you to see what sort of interest there might be. Maybe it could be a weeknight, or maybe Saturday evening after Mass. It could be interesting.

Peace,

Fr. Mike

Palm Sunday

Cycle B MK 14:1—15:47 Today’s word from the Word is “palm”. This is quite appropriate seeing how it is we celebrate Palm Sunday this Sunday. Of course, palms play a prominent role in today’s celebration. But, there is greater significance to why the people were waving palm branches as Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem. We ought to know what was going on with the grand procession. Jesus had been preaching and teaching and traveling extensively now, having done these things for three years. People have come to know Jesus and have seen the wonderful miracles that he performed. There was high hope for Jesus to be the great and powerful political Messiah everyone had been waiting for. This, of course, was the sentiment only of the

common person of Jerusalem. There were many Jews and Romans who despised Jesus. But, for now, he is enjoying the popularity. The tradition of waving palm branches on Palm Sunday actually originates with the Jewish festival of Sukkoth, also called the Festival of the Tabernacles or Booths. In the observance of Sukkoth, worshippers processed through Jerusalem and in the Temple, waving bunches of leafy branches made of willow, myrtle and palm. As they waved these branches in that procession, the people recited words from Psalm 118. Among these words were "Save us, we beseech you, O Lord." Save us in Hebrew is “hosanna”. This is typically followed by “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. (Ps 118:25-6). This applies beautifully to Jesus who enters the city for the last time, knowing he will be arrested and crucified by the end of the week. Jesus does come in the name of the Lord to complete his mission to bring salvation to the world. Also, in ancient times, palm branches symbolized goodness, well-being, and victory. They

were often depicted on coins and important buildings. King Solomon, for instance, had palm branches carved into the walls and doors of the temple. We must also keep in mind that the roads were not paved in those days. They were dusty and dirty. As a sign of respect and honor the streets would be covered with palm branches to protect the feet of someone important from the dust and dirt. One might say that Jesus was receiving the royal carpet treatment only the carpet was a bed of palm branches. Customarily, Palm Sunday observances include the waving of palm branches in procession, the blessing of palms, and the making of small crosses with palm fronds. Palm Sunday also marks the beginning of Holy Week, a solemn week focusing on the final days of Jesus' life. Holy Week culminates on Easter Sunday, the most important holy day in Christianity. From Reverend David Green is the pastor of St. Martha’s Catholic Church in East Providence, Rhode Island. He is also the Northeast regional moderator of the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

We will take up our Easter Flower Collection this weekend. Envelopes for this collection are in your monthly packets. Thank you for your generosity.

WE NEED PEOPLE TO HELP CLEANING OUR CHURCH! We are in need of 2 volunteers to help clean the Church on Thursday mornings

after the 8:30 AM Mass. We start at 9:00 AM, and it usually only takes about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. Our cleaning involves simple cleaning of the pews, changing of the Holy Water, and cleaning the altar area. We are also in need of one volunteer to help with our Mass lines used at Mass. Each person takes the linens home and washes them once every six weeks. We also need 2 volunteers to wash and iron the Altar Servers’ albs, approximately every 2 months. The albs wash beautifully, and only need a little ironing. At this time, we have 7 to 8 albs being used. For more information, please contact Jean Seitz at (708) 748-4554. We would be glad to answer any and all of your questions.

March 25, 2018 - Palm Sunday: Today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of the

holiest of Christian weeks. Let us pray for the grace to take up our own cross and to follow Jesus through death to new life. During Lent, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring the mercy of Jesus into the hearts of the poor, by assisting families, providing food.

Black Catholic Saints Blacks in Catholic Christianity have a long and vibrant history. Much of that history is generally unknown to Black Catholics as well as to the rest of the faithful.

Mother Henriette Delille (1813–1862) was an American Créole woman from New Orleans, Louisiana, who founded the Roman Catholic order of the Sisters of the Holy Family in that city. Composed of free women of color, the order provided nursing care and a home for orphans, later establishing schools as well. They taught slave children when such education was prohibited by law.[1] The order grew in number in the late 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries, reaching a peak of 400 sisters in 1950. They taught numerous students in black parochial schools. Since the turn of the century, African Americans in Louisiana, including

Creoles, had been disenfranchised by the state legislature and subject to Jim Crow laws. In the 21st century, the order operates facilities for the poor in four states and Washington, DC, in the United States, and has a mission in Belize. In 1988 the order formally opened the cause with the Holy See of the canonizationof Henriette Delille. In 2010 Pope Benedict XVI declared DeLille to be Venerable. A miracle attributed to her intercession was approved by a medical board in 2013, advancing her cause. If canonized, Henriette Delille will be the first native-born Black American saint.

Reflecting on God’s Word Someone once told me that people come to church on Palm Sunday because they get something. But I like to think that palm says something they recognize as true. “He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness,” writes Paul, quoting the words of an early Christian hymn. “He humbled himself, becoming obedient to

the point of death, even death on a cross,” follow soon after (Philippians 2:7, 8). Emptying and humbling are the two key words embracing the trajectory of the life of Jesus Christ, the Son of God: from incarnation to passion and death. He poured himself out for us and for our salvation, certainly suffering physically—from the beating, the scourging, the crowning with thorns, being struck with a reed, spat upon, prodded, pushed, and stumbling up the hill to Golgotha. Then he was stretched out on a crossbeam, nailed to it, and lifted up, his body suspended between heaven and earth. Finally, he suffocated, unable to raise himself to take in more air. There was also the inner suffering of abandonment, of seeing his disciples run off, of realizing that all those who had cried “Hosanna” a few days earlier had either been silent or had cried out, “Crucify him.” Only the women had remained with him. Today, when we take home a piece of palm, it invites us to prepare to renew our baptismal promises on Easter. Then we can add our voices to that solitary voice almost two millennia ago, saying, “Truly, this is the Son of God!” (Mark 15:39).

A Prayer for “Renew My Church”

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us

May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations.
