Eyeglasses, Cell Phones And Lots Of Bikes – They’re All At Metro’s Lost And Found

You might be surprised to learn what kinds of items passengers leave behind on buses and trains, but not the customer service agents who receive them at Metro’s Lost and Found department in the Wilshire Customer Center.

Computers, stuffed animals, umbrellas, dentures and even an oxygen tank have been left by patrons and ended up on the shelves of the unclaimed items being held in Lost and Found for 45 days.

Two of the most forgotten items: cell phones and bicycles. The Lost and Found usually collects about 60 cell phones during a 45-day holding period. And although the center’s bicycle holding room was recently expanded, it’ s usually filled to its capacity of 90 bikes. The center receives about 10-12 bikes per day.

If an item left behind has some type of identification, the center will notify the owner by mail and they have 45 days to claim it. After 45 days the items are either donated to charity or auctioned off.

The Lost and Found is located at the Wilshire Customer Center, 5301 Wilshire Boulevard, LA (at the intersection of La Brea Avenue). The window hours are 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday.

The station is still at the site awaiting restoration at what is now the North Hollywood Station of the Metro Orange Line. Don’t Leave The Bus Without Your Bike With a bus full of passengers and heavy tra;c to negotiate, it’s di;cult for a bus operator to remember who put that bicycle in the rack.

Help yourself from being left on foot while your bike motors down the road attached to the front of a Metro Bus: be prepared for your stop ahead of time; move to the front of the bus; tell the operator you’re getting off and are going to get your bike from the rack.

If your bike does get away from you, be sure and check with Metro Lost and Found.

The bicycle holding room at Lost and Found receives 10 to 12 bikes per day.

North Hollywood Station 1950 The North Hollywood Station of the Paci>c Electric Railway near the intersection of Lankershim Boulevard and Chandler Avenue is shown in this historic photo taken in 1950. The station is still at the site awaiting restoration at what is now the North Hollywood Station of the Metro Orange Line. A U.S. Post O;ce branch is still located across the street from the station, but the cost of parking in the area has increased slightly in the last 50 years.

Photo and caption material supplied by Jim Walker, an archivist in Metro’s Dorothy Payton Gray Transportation Library, from his recent book “Images of Rail – Paci>c Electric Red Cars” available at the Metro Store online at metro.net.

Bike to work May 17 and ride Metro for free.
