The question was how many bones are there in the adult human body. The answer is 206. Additionally there is a network of other structures that connect the bones together, this system performs a number of vital functions such as giving the body its form, assisting with bodily movements and producing new blood cells. So this got me thinking what other interesting facts I could find about our skeletal system. The skeleton of a newborn baby has approximately 270 bones, which are a mixture of bones and cartilage. Over time, these additional bones in infants fuse in a process called ossification to form larger bones, reducing the overall number of bones to 206 by adulthood. Bones come in all shapes and sizes, and are not evenly distributed throughout the body. Each hand has 27 bones, and each foot has 26, which means that together the body's two hands and feet have 106 bones, which is more than half of the bones in your entire body. The hyoid, a horseshoe-shaped bone in the throat, is the only bone in the human body not connected to another bone. The hyoid works with the larynx and tongue to help create speech, interestingly Neanderthals are the only other species to have hyoids like humans, its presence has led scientists to speculate that the Neanderthals had complex speech patterns similar to modern humans. Bones are made of active, living cells. And like other cells in your body, the cells of your bones are susceptible to tumours. Modern humans and their

relatives have dealt with tumours for thousands of years. In 2013, scientists found a tumour in a Neanderthal rib bone dating back 120,000 years. It is the oldest human tumour ever discovered.Organisms with a bony skeleton, Vertebrates, account for only 2 percent of all animal species on the planet. As our skeleton is so amazing, its best to look after it as well as we can as we age, dont wait till a minor skeletal issue becomes a more severe problem, see a local CAA NT Chiro today.

I was proud to host Prime Minister Turnbull on his

recent visit to Darwin, his first to the Top End as

Prime Minister. Theres no doubt Prime Minister

Turnbull and Minister Frydenberg will be regular

    visitors to Darwin.

During his visit the Prime Minister noted "Darwin

really sits at this extremely important and historic

point between Australia and Asia.... We are living

in the most exciting time in the history of human

development. The pace of change is utterly

without precedent and it is most rapid here, in

our region". I couldn't agree more, the Top End

is certainly receiving national and international

attention because Darwin is well positioned as

a wonderful vibrant multicultural City to make

the most of the opportunities that are presented

    to us.

As Territorians we have an opportunity to grow

our exports in education, technology, and

    tourism. Providing world-class destinations for

the growing middle class across Asia to see some

of the best natural and cultural attractions.

I am proud to be part of the Turnbull

Government, a government that is focused on

creating investment opportunities and jobs, not

for just today, but for tomorrow. A government

    that recognises the enormous economic

potential of northern Australia, and is 100%

committed to seeing it reach its full potential.

Territorians can rest assured knowing that

with investment brings jobs. With jobs brings

opportunities. It would be great to see all

    Territorians embrace the opportunities that

will be presented as part of a joint Federal and

Territory Government drive to develop North

    Australia.

Carols by the Arafura Wind Ensemble, Palmerston Senior Songsters and the Palmerston Girl Guides. Join the City of Palmerston Mayor, Ian Abbott who will start the countdown with three lucky Palmerston children, brothers Jaxon, Jyles and Judd, who participated in our Childrens Week Art Competition and were drawn at random from art competition winners, officially lighting the Tree. The Goyder Christmas Tree is the creation of talented and well renowned local artist Techy Masero. She has cleverly designed the Tree to not only look beautiful but to withstand the extremes of climate here in the Top End. The Tree is elegant and traditional with thousands of lights, 250 garlands, dozens of hand crafted decorations and a 1 metre tall sparkling Christmas Star. The lights will be turned on every night from 6.30pm and will be on display until early January. We hope it will bring joy and Christmas spirit to the Palmerston community.

We often get angry with ourselves for the imbalances we feel in our relationships either with friends, family or lovers. We may find ourselves saying "Im sick and tired of him not paying me some attention. Im always giving out and getting nothing in return."We often look at our relationships as transactions: I give this to you (care, support, understanding, respect) and in return you will give back to me (loyalty, respect, support & reliability). The trouble with this is that it brings economics to the relationshipnot LOVE. You cant use real love as a transaction. This may come around from our childhood where our parents rewarded us for doing what they wanted us to do. We are subtly taught that we get recognition and acceptance for what we donot our uniqueness. We can often lack self-love and need someone to tell us we are loveable. We need to have a true relationship with ourselves. We must appreciate and care for ourselves first. Love isnt something you do or an emotion you feel, but it is something you "BE". Celebrate who YOU already are; what YOU already have and experienced - then SHARE this with another. You will then be sharing in someone elses greatness

too. You should now feel whole, so you dont need anything else from them. Just share life! We can be influenced by our partners, but we dont need to be reactive to whats going outside of you. You can understand your partners reality without losing your own.

Yes the rains make cooking the turkey in the outdoor BBQ just that little bit more challenging but I think most of us love living in the tropics because of these quirky hurdles to overcome. The competing chorus of frogs with Christmas carols make a Territory touch to a traditional day steeped in the gathering of family, the warmth of love and the counting of our blessings.Christmas in Darwin, for us Cyclone Tracy survivors, means memories of loss come flooding back, despite our best attempts to keep them at bay. We remember the horror of the night and the hellish aftermath with families torn apart, a city plunged into homelessness where we had nothing but the support of each other. But with this memory comes a flood of thanks for the family and friends we have around us. Knowing we survived and can survive anything. Knowing our city can rebuild and be beautiful once again. Knowing

our children can love the gifts of Christmas with a naivety that fills our hearts with joy and hope.Yes, Christmas in Darwin is a little different. It starts now, with the school Christmas concerts, work Christmas parties any opportunity to celebrate our lives in this tropical treasure.I use Christmas as a treasure hunt, fossicking through our local Darwin shops for little gifts that speak to me of the family and friends I love. Christmas in Darwin is an adventure embrace it.

    IN BUSINESS GOVERNANCE

Darwin: Fourteen students from 11 different Aboriginal corporations from across Australia have just graduated with a Diploma of Business (Governance). You could feel the pride and sense of achievement at the graduation ceremony hosted by the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, Anthony Beven, at Darwins DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. In his address Mr Beven said, I would like to congratulate our 14 new graduates. I know that the Diploma of Business (Governance) is a demanding course and you should each feel proud that you stayed with it, even when the going was tough. You can now take what you have learned to benefit your communities and corporations. The course which is offered through the Registrars office (ORIC) is a nationally recognised qualification designed especially for corporation directors, potential directors and key staff. Those who complete the course

improve their corporate governance knowledge, management skills and go on to help build capacity within their corporations.Ms Susan Betts, a director of Warna-Manda Aboriginal Corporation based in Port Lincoln, South Australia, and who also runs her own business, said, Our corporation is about connecting and healing our people back to country and with non-Aboriginal people. I feel fantastic that I have completed the Diploma of Business (Governance). Before presenting the graduates with their diplomas, Mr Beven said, You now join a large group of other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are working hard to make their corporations and communities stronger.Entertainment was provided by the ever popular One Mob Different Country dance troupe and Ms Ali Mills who sang Arafura Darwin and Waltjim Bat Matilda to the audiences great delight.

Growing hibiscus is an easy way to add a tropical flair to your garden. When you know how to care for hibiscus plants, you will be rewarded with many years of lovely flowers. Lets look at some tips on how to care for hibiscus.

How fortunate are we to have some of the most beautiful hibiscus growing here in the tropics. Many many varieties to choose from..They can be grown in many different areas of your garden and for various reasons.Looking to block out the neighbours down a fence line? Perfect for that.Looking are adding gorgeous coloured flowers to your garden?. Perfect for that..Need a shrub to be able to hedge?? Perfect for that..

Many people who are growing a hibiscus plant choose to do so in a container. This allows them to move the hibiscus plant to ideal locations, depending on the time of year. Hibiscus plants prefer a cozy fit when growing in a container. This means that they should be slightly root bound in the pot and when you do decide to repot, give the hibiscus only a little bit more room. Always make sure that your growing hibiscus plant has excellent drainage.

When you care for a hibiscus, you should remember that hibiscus flower best in temperatures between16-32 perfect for our top end conditions. They love to grow in the full sun, regular fertilizer. When hibiscus are in their blooming stage, they require more water than the cooler climate in our dry season. The trick is not to over water it...

    HIBISCUS IN YOUR GARDEN

FERTILIZING HIBISCUSA growing hibiscus plant needs lots of nutrients to bloom well. You can either use a diluted liquid fertilizer once a week, a slow release Osmocote fertilizer twice a year or you can add a high potassium compost to the soil.
