RAK FTZ RECORDS INCREASE IN NEW COMPANY REGISTRATIONS Ras Al Khaimah, October 2, 2012: Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone (RAK FTZ) – one of the fastest-growing and most cost-effective free trade zones in the UAE – today announced a 4% year-on-year increase in new company registrations in the first half of 2012, according to the audited reports by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

A total of 1,145 new companies registered with RAK FTZ in H1 2012, a significant increase from the 1,101 companies registered in the first half of 2011. Revenues from the registrations touched AED 123.55 million, a 10.21% increase compared to the AED 112.1 million generated during H1 2011, revealed PwC in the report.

This growth has far outstripped the budgeted revenue and registration targets for the free zone this year.

In addition, RAK FTZ’s growing reputation also received a major fillip as it was recently named as one of the Top 50 Free Zones in the fDi Global Free Zones of the Future 2012-2013

rankings, which recognised the free zone’s various attributes, including its cost-effectiveness and economic potential, on offer.

The top new companies at RAK FTZ that registered during H1 2012 came from India, the UK, Jordan and Pakistan, among others. A vast majority (62%) of the newly registered companies represent the commercial sector, followed by consulting (28%) and general trading (9%), as shown in the PwC report.

Maryam Al Murshedi Al Shehhi, Deputy Director General of RAK FTZ

In her comments, Maryam Al Murshedi Al Shehhi, Deputy Director General of RAK FTZ, said: “The

Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Resort & Spa was shortlisted by voters for the ‘Favourite Travel Escape’ award against fellow Ras Al Khaimah property; Banyan Tree Al Wadi Hotel and Oman’s Six Senses Zighy Bay. Winners of the 2012 awards were announced on Monday, October 22 in Dubai at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre where Hilton attendees Tuhina Rahman – Cluster Marketing & PR Executive and Igor Erkoff - Brazilian Speciality Chef of Ras Al Khaimah’s only South American restaurant Pura Vida collected the award on behalf of the winning resort.

RAK Free Trade Zone’s philosophy centres on attracting and maximising the growth of value-added, know-how based, and technologically advanced businesses in Ras Al Khaimah. This has seen us attracting some top companies to the region over the last 12 years. The tremendous and continuous growth in our new client portfolio reflects the investors’ confidence in our transparent and business-friendly environment.”

“RAK FTZ is a major contributor to the GDP growth of the emirate, and in turn the UAE. The reason we have seen amazing growth is that we not only offer unmatched benefits for our clients, but also extend a strategic hub-and-spoke destination for businesses, especially for those who wish to expand in the Middle East and Northern Africa. The fDi ranking allotted to us also sends out a clear message to the global business community that RAK FTZ is indeed ‘The Home of Business’ in the Middle East,” said Al Shehhi.

She further added: “We are quite confident that RAK FTZ will achieve unprecedented growth levels by the end of 2012.”

To reinforce its growth strategy, RAK FTZ powered up its key value-added services for customers through online and offline marketing initiatives. This

included a number of marketing outreach activities in the UAE and the GCC, as also reaching out to prospective investors in India, France, Turkey, Jordan, Nigeria, Russia, Pakistan, China, and other countries. In addition, RAK FTZ participated in several trade visits and conferences in India and China, organised by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade.

Emphasising its role as a good corporate citizen, RAK FTZ also undertook a number of Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives within the emirate and beyond in the first half of 2012. These included support to RAK Half Marathon, RAK Terry Fox Walk, RAK Traditional Rowing Regatta, Beat the Heat campaign and Iftar gatherings at labour camps.

RAK FTZ also played pivotal roles in some community initiatives in H1 2012, including the inauguration of a spa, support to the Ramadan volleyball tournament, a can collection drive, sponsorship of the Holy Quran competition and a football fiesta, among others. It also sponsored the 37th Arab Deaf Week activities, organised ‘healthy food day’ for the RAK FTZ staff and sponsored a charity Iftar, apart from extending donations to a number of charity establishments.

RAK TOURISM AUTHORITY LAUNCHES ELECTRONIC SYSTEM FOR LICENCES, PERMITSUnited Arab Emirates: Wednesday, November 07 - 2012 at 04:17

The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (TDA), in collaboration with the Electronic Government Authority (EGA), has launched a new system aimed at simplifying and facilitating registration procedures, Gulf News has reported. The Electronic Tourism Licences and Permits System will enhance customers’ experience and improve the operational capability for running the daily licences and permits, said the TDA. “The new system will allow applicants to know the initial approvals of the tourism licences and permits, inspection requests as well as updating on the status of receipts payment, the granting of licenses and permits as well as also allowing applicants the convenience of printing the documents accordingly,” the authority said.

KEYHOLE SURGERY FOR HERNIA DONE AT RAK HOSPITALA controversial surgical method for hernia repair was done by experts from RAK Hospital and telecast live to an audience of 200 doctors across the UAE.

By doing so, benefits of laparoscopic surgery over a more traditional open surgery were outlined.

The method still remains controversial among doctors. Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimally invasive surgery (MIS), bandaid surgery or keyhole surgery is a modern surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen are performed through small incisions (usually 0.5-1.5 cm) as opposed to the larger incisions needed in traditional open surgeries.

culture and environment and by clicking onto the Explore the Emirate icon, users can explore instantly the various touristic highlights and attractions.

The Hotels & Resorts icon offers information on the emirate’s range of accommodation and invites users to select their choice of hotel or resort by star rating or alphabetically by property name. The Events & Offers icon provides a list of current as well as forthcoming sports and social events, while the Wine & Dine icon gives users a guide to dining out in Ras Al Khaimah with a list of restaurants and cuisines.

The Media Centre icon allows one to discover the natural beauty of Ras Al Khaimah through an extensive image gallery, videos and latest news while the FAQ’s icon answers a wide range of frequently asked questions from dress code to interesting facts on Ras Al Khaimah.

The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism App was created by UAE based Unique Technologies, one of the fastest growing mobile software development firms in the region, in conjunction with Electronic Government Authority of Ras Al Khaimah (EGA), a Ras Al Khaimah Government facility providing residents of emirate with various residential and business e-services.

“This kind of surgery is not done frequently in the UAE because it is intricate and delicate; there is (more) scope of making mistakes,” said Dr Marc Gauer, CEO and Head of Surgery at Ras Al Khaimah Hospital that organised the event. “So, not all doctors prefer it.

“The laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair is an excellent alternative to the open hernia repair. The method is less painful and allows for shorter hospitalisation while patients are able to resume normal activities at an earlier stage,” said Dr Anup Panigrahi, Head of the Department of MIS. “Where traditional methods carry a five per cent recurrence rate, laparoscopic only amount to less than 1 per cent. All in all, it seems to be less painful and the recuperation time is 4-5 days.”

For the cake 225g/8oz plain flour

350g/12½oz caster sugar

85g/3oz cocoa powder

1½ tsp baking powder

1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

2 free-range eggs

250ml/9fl oz milk

125ml/4½fl oz vegetable oil

2 tsp vanilla extract

250ml/9fl oz boiling water

EASY CHOCOLATE CAKE PERFECT FOR THE HOLIDAYS

For the chocolate icing 200g/7oz plain chocolate

200ml/7fl oz double cream

Preparation methodn Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Grease

and line two 20cm/8in sandwich tins.

Technique: Greasing and lining cake tins

nFor the cake, place all of the cake ingredients, except the boiling water, into a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon, or electric whisk, beat the mixture until smooth and well combined.

nAdd the boiling water to the mixture, a little at a time, until smooth. (The cake mixture will now be very liquid.)

nDivide the cake batter between the sandwich tins and bake in the oven for 25-35 minutes, or until the top is firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

nRemove the cakes from the oven and allow to cool completely, still in their tins, before icing.

nFor the chocolate icing, heat the chocolate and cream in a saucepan over a low heat until the chocolate melts. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk the mixture until smooth, glossy and thickened. Set aside to cool for 1-2 hours, or until thick enough to spread over the cake.

nTo assemble the cake, run a round-bladed knife around the inside of the cake tins to loosen the cakes. Carefully remove the cakes from the tins

Technique: Removing cakes from a cake tin

nSpread a little chocolate icing over the top of one of the chocolate cakes, then carefully top with the other cake.

nTransfer the cake to a serving plate and ice the cake all over with the chocolate icing, using a palette knife.

Technique: Icing a cake with chocolate ganache

According to Wikipedia, hypertension or high blood pressure is a cardiac chronic medical condition in which the systemic arterial blood pressure is elevated.

If you maintain prohibitive blood pressure, the basic gadget your doctor will commend is lifestyle changes. These changes may well include quitting smoking, losing weight, exercising frequently, dipping stress, and ingestion a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in fat and salt. “Many people can successfully lesser their blood pressure and risks of feeling disease by making lifestyle changes,” comments from Daniel Jones, MD, dean of the train of medicine by the side of the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, and ancient president of the American Heart Association.

For many people, however, lifestyle changes may well not be an adequate amount. Clothed in with the aim of legal action, your doctor may well prescribe medications. Current guidelines from the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure, famous as the JNC7, commend a quantity of diverse classes of drugs to reduce blood pressure in citizens with moderate to unembellished disease.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATIONThe classes of drugs to consider prohibitive blood pressure include:

n Diuretics: Also called “water pills,” diuretics flush water and salt from your body. With a smaller amount water or fluid, to last against, the pressure in your blood vessels decreases. Some commonly prescribed diuretics are: Hydrochlorothiazide (Hydrodiuril, Aquazide H, Microzide), indapamide (Lozol, Natrilix SR), furosemide (Lasix), metolazone (Zaroxolyn, Mykrox), chlorthalidone and chlorothiazide (Diuril).

n Beta-blockers: Beta blockers lesser blood pressure by slowing your feeling rate and dipping the force with which the feeling muscle contracts. They resolve this by preventing adrenaline (epinephrine) from stimulating special receptors in your feeling. Some commonly prescribed beta-blockers include metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), atenolol (Tenormin), carvedilol (Coreg, Dilatrend), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).

n Alpha-blockers: These medications relax muscular tissue inside your blood vessels, by this it means dipping your blood pressure. Commonly prescribed alpha-blockers include: Doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), and terazosin (Hytrin).

n Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs): These two classes of drugs works by interfering with the belongings of angiotensin II, a hormone with the aim of increasing blood pressure. Some commonly prescribed ACE inhibitors are: Benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), fosinopril (Monopril), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), quinapril (Accupril), and ramipril (Altace).

Losartan (Cozaar), candesartan (Atacand, Amias), valsartan (Diovan), irbesartan (Avapro, Karvea), and olmesartan (Olmetec, Benicar) are repeatedly used angiotensin II receptor blockers.

n Calcium channel blockers (CCBs): These medications decelerate the rate by the side of which calcium passes into your blood vessels, like so relaxing the vessels, higher blood pour through them, and lowering your blood pressure. Commonly prescribed CCBs include: Amlodipine (Norvasc), diltiazem (Cardizem LA, Dilacor, Tiazac), felodipine (Plendil), nicardipine (Cardene), nifedipine (Procardia, Procardia XL), and nisoldipine (Sular).

Some patients, especially folks with more unembellished hypertension, may well need a combination of single or more drugs from diverse classes, Jones says.

SIDE EFFECTS OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATIONSWhile with all medications, blood pressure drugs are associated with piece belongings in selected people. Common piece belongings of prohibitive blood pressure medications include lightheadedness (especially whilst you attitude up similar to duplicity down), fatigue, inconvenience sleeping, dry opening, dry cough, headaches, flushing, nausea, bloating, constipation, and depression. Some men may well face problems maintaining an erection whilst they take some prohibitive blood pressure medications. Some antihypertensive drugs can cause the amount of potassium in your blood to fall.

“You should talk to your doctor not far off from some changes you notice,” Jones advises. If single medicine causes piece belongings, your doctor ought to toil with you to unearth a diverse medication to control your blood pressure.

KEEPING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE UNDER CONTROLTo decrease your venture of feeling disease and stroke, it is of great consequence with the aim of you to take steps to keep your blood pressure under control. HEALTH&FITNESS

with a doc, follow these guidelines to healthfully pack on some pounds.

Keep a food diary. Chart what and when you eat every day for several weeks to learn about your eating habits and identify places to add calories. Online programs like MyFitnessPal and Fitday can make tracking easy-peasy. (They’re also good tools for keeping track of your actual weight.)

Add it up. Try adding an extra 200+ calories a day in the beginning, says Cassetty, and adjust up or down depending on results.

Focus on quality, not quantity. Even when you’re trying to gain weight, burgers, chips, and milkshakes all day (’err day) isn’t great for a body. Instead, choose nutrient-dense foods from all food groups, says Cassetty. Good options include whole grains like whole wheat pasta, fruits and vegetables, nuts, and lean protein.

Eat more frequently. And never skip meals! It’s easy to feel full fast when you start introducing more calories into each meal; changes in food intake might also bring on gastrointestinal issues and even acne. Make things easier on your belly by spreading calorie intake out over five to six smaller meals throughout the day.

Snack dense. Choose calorie-dense snacks like nuts, cheese, dried fruits, yogurt with granola, avocados, and pretzels or whole grain crackers with nut butters or hummus. If leaving the house for a while, pack snacks for calories-on-the-go.

Drink calorically. Instead of diet soda and other low-cal drinks, choose filling, high-calorie beverages like smoothies, healthy shakes, or liquid meal replacements. Drink fluids in

between meals to add calories and to avoid filling up on beverages during meals (which might make people eat less solid food).

Eat before bed. Consider this your permission slip for the midnight munchies. A lot of healing and regeneration happens while we sleep, so eating before bed can give your body the nutrients it needs to do the work. Nom down on a PB & J or a wrap with avocado, vegetables, and lean meat or cheese.

Set attainable goals. And remember to be patient. Just like weight loss, weight gain is a process — and often a slow one, Cassetty says. Gaining might take years, so don’t give up hope if you don’t pack on immediate pounds. The rate at which a person needs to gain weight depends on their health goals and current health status, and a physician or nutritionist can help establish a reasonable goal weight. Signs of reaching an ideal weight include increased energy, stabilized hunger patterns, and overall good health.

Get support. It’s important to have a strong support system throughout the process of gaining weight, Cassetty says — both to help gainers achieve their goals and to cope with the emotional issues that might arise from bodily changes. One of the best ways to adjust to changing size is to spend time noticing and appreciating how your “new” body appears in the mirror, says Greatist Expert and psychologist Ellen Langer.

Dress nice. Don’t put off feeling good about your appearance. Talk nicely to yourself and choose outfits that make you feel good, no matter what you weigh.

HOW TO GAIN WEIGHT THE HEALTHY WAY

Back in college, I had a problem (one which I no longer have): I was too thin. People, especially my girlfriends, seemed to hate me for it — and they hated me even more for complaining that it was a problem. But it was: I was tired all the time. Anxious. Irritable. Barely strong enough to carry my groceries the 12 blocks home. Regardless of how well my skinny jeans fit, I knew that in order to improve my quality of life, I needed to gain weight.

I’ve maintained a healthier weight for several years now, but I’m hardly the first person to struggle with putting on some pounds. Whether a person wants to gain weight because they’re sick of being tired all the time or just wants to hit a healthier body weight (back included), Greatist has the info and advice on how to make it happen.

THE SKINNY ON BEING SKINNY — THE NEED-TO-KNOWThere are lots of theories about why naturally thin people have the bodies they do, from genetics to stronger satiety cues (some people can feel fuller faster, prompting them to eat less)[1][2]. Regardless, it’s important to note that if someone is underweight it’s not proof-positive that they have an eating disorder.

According to the Body Mass Index (BMI) scale (which uses a person’s weight and height to estimate their level of body fat), having a Body Mass Index of less than 18.5 qualifies as being underweight. Interestingly, of all the BMI calculators we sampled, every one of them included information on

how to lose weight. None of them recognized that some people might in fact be looking to gain weight. Perhaps this is because underweight people are an increasing minority. The number of Americans who are underweight is the lowest it’s been since 1988: Approximately two percent of adult women and one percent of adult men fell into the category of “underweight” between 2007 and 2010.

Whatever the reason for thinness, people sometimes invalidate the health concerns of those who need to gain weight. There’s a stereotype that nobody can be naturally underweight, says Greatist Expert and trainer Jen Cassetty, so, naturally thin people often face some kind of discrimination. Yet underweight people (particularly men) are just as much at risk for health concerns as overweight and obese people. Being significantly underweight is associated with negative health effects that include lack of energy, nutritional deficiencies, a weakened immune system, osteoporosis, and, in women, loss of menstrual function and complications with pregnancy. So Greatist decided to shine a light on this oft-overlooked version of weight maintenance.

THE BEEF ON BEEFING UP — YOUR ACTION PLANAs with any diet or exercise plan, it’s important to consult a physician or nutritionist before adopting any weight gain diet. A doctor can also help rule out other health issues that might be contributing to being underweight, such as thyroid problems, parasites, or disordered eating. After chatting

PARENTING

TEAMING UP WITH TEACHERSA successful school year begins with teamwork — between you, your child and your child’s teachers. As your child heads back to school, consider these suggestions for building a positive, collaborative relationship with his teachers:

Treat the teacher as an expert. Be positive in your attitude and approach, making it a habit to contact the teacher under positive circumstances. Showing up only when you want to discuss a problem can push a teacher into defensive mode as soon as you walk through the door.

When discussing your child, start many of your questions with, “What can I do? . . .” Let the teacher know you and your child are taking responsibility for learning.

Recognize that there are practical limitations on what the teacher can do. If your child needs to follow a certain system for keeping track of homework, create the paperwork yourself so that the teacher needs to only fill in a few blanks.

Don’t rely solely on the information you get from your child about a particular incident. Naturally, your personal loyalty rests with your child, but do your best to look at the situation objectively and see it through the eyes of the teacher.

Discuss the conversations you have with the teacher openly with your child. Emphasize the positive areas that you and the teacher discussed, and brainstorm how to use those strengths to improve in other areas.

Help your child understand and value a variety of teaching methods. Every teacher is a lesson in learning. By helping your child appreciate the unique styles of different teachers, you’ll prepare him to use his strengths to cope with life’s many other differences.

SOOTHE SEPARATION ANXIETY WITH SODASChildren often experience a mixture of emotions when they join a new sports team, start a new grade in school or are put into a situation that requires them to interact with new people. While some are excited, others may be fearful. Stomachaches are a common symptom of separation anxiety, which children may experience when they are afraid of leaving their parents for a new environment. If your child is struggling with separation anxiety, the SODAS method may help him or her overcome the fear and leave the anxiety behind.

The SODAS method of decision making gives families a structured process to go through together when facing challenges. Just as certain bubbly sodas can help calm an upset stomach, you can use SODAS to help a child who is afraid to start school, ride the bus or join a new sports team.

Situation - The first step to solving any problem is defining it. Talk through what is causing your child to feel afraid. Ask specific, open-ended questions like “What makes you feel afraid?”

Options - Come up with options for how your child can solve his or her problem. Let your child list good and bad options.

Disadvantages and Advantages - Work with your child to identify and list the disadvantages and advantages of each option you listed in the “Options” step.

Solution - Help your child choose a solution based on which option has the most advantages.

PARENTING

TEN BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GOOD PARENTINGAre you constantly searching the latest on parenting to make sure you are doing everything exactly right? It’s time to relax. Temple University psychologist, Laurence Steinberg, says that perfect parents just don’t exist.

“Most parents are pretty good parents,” says Steinberg, “But I’ve never met a parent who is perfect 100 percent of the time. We all can improve our batting average.”

Sports analogies are useful to Steinberg, the concept of the book came from his own desire to improve his golf game. “I was reading, probably for the 10th time, Harvey Penick’s Little Red Golf Book,” he says. “It is built around a series of very short essays that cover very basic principles.

“As I was reading it, I was thinking that this might be a good way to teach people how to be better parents.” Steinberg, the Distinguished University Professor and the Laura Carnell Professor of Psychology at Temple, wrote the newly released The Ten Basic Principles of Good Parenting (Simon & Schuster). This easy to follow how-to book uses the formula that works for golf to improve parenting. He believes it is the perfect format for today’s busy parents.

Here is a quick overview of the Ten Basic Principles:

1. What you do matters.“Tell yourself that every day. How you treat and respond to your child should come from a knowledgeable, deliberate sense of what you want to accomplish. Always ask yourself: What effect will my decision have on my child?”

2. You cannot be too loving.“When it comes to genuine expressions of warmth and affection, you cannot love your child too much. It is simply not possible to spoil a child with love. What we often think of as the product of spoiling a child is never the result of showing a child too much love. It is usually the consequence of giving a child things in place of love—things like leniency, lowered expectations or material possessions.”

3. Be involved in your child’s life.“Being an involved parent takes time and is hard work, and it often means rethinking and rearranging your priorities. It frequently means sacrificing what you want to do for what your child needs you to do. Be there mentally as well as physically.”

4. Adapt your parenting to fit your child.“Make sure your parenting keeps pace with your child’s development. You may wish you could slow down or freeze-frame your child’s life, but this is the last thing he wants. You may be fighting getting older, but all he wants is to grow up. The same drive for independence that is making your three-year-old say ‘no’ all the time is what’s motivating him to be toilet trained. The same intellectual growth spurt that is making your 13-year-old curious and inquisitive in the classroom also is making her argumentative at the dinner table.”

5. Establish and set rules.“If you don’t manage your child’s behavior when he is young, he will have a hard time learning how to manage himself when he is older and you aren’t around. Any time of the day or night, you should always be able to answer these three questions: Where is my child? Who is with my child? What is my child doing? The rules your child has learned from you are going to shape the rules he applies to himself.”

6. Foster your child’s independence.“Setting limits helps your child develop a sense of self-control. Encouraging independence helps her develop a sense of self-direction. To be successful in life, she’s going to need both. Accepting that it is normal for children to push for autonomy is absolutely key to effective parenting. Many parents mistakenly equate their child’s independence with rebelliousness or disobedience. Children push for independence because it is part of human nature to want to feel in control rather than to feel controlled by someone else.”

7. Be consistent.“If your rules vary from day to day in an unpredictable fashion, or if you enforce them only intermittently, your child’s misbehavior is your fault, not his. Your most important disciplinary tool is consistency. Identify your non-negotiables. The more your authority is based on wisdom and not on power, the less your child will challenge it.”

8. Avoid harsh discipline.“Of all the forms of punishment that parents use, the one with the worst side effects is physical punishment. Children who are spanked, hit or slapped are more prone to fighting with other children. They are more likely to be bullies and more likely to use aggression to solve disputes with others.”

9. Explain your rules and decisions.“Good parents have expectations they want their child to live up to. Generally, parents overexplain to young children and underexplain to adolescents. What is obvious to you may not be evident to a 12-year-old. He doesn’t have the priorities, judgment or experience that you have.”

10. Treat your child with respect.“The best way to get respectful treatment from your child is to treat him respectfully. You should give your child the same courtesies you would give to anyone else. Speak to him politely. Respect his opinion. Pay attention when he is speaking to you. Treat him kindly. Try to please him when you can. Children treat others the way their parents treat them. Your relationship with your child is the foundation for her relationships with others.”

There is no guarantee that following these guidelines will result in perfect parents... remember, there is no such thing!

“Raising children is not something we think of as especially scientific,” says Steinberg. “But parenting is one of the most well-researched areas in the entire field of social science. It has been studied for 75 years, and the findings have remained remarkably consistent over time.”

“The advice in the book is based on what scientists who study parenting have learned from decades of systematic research involving hundreds of thousands of families. What I’ve done is to synthesize and communicate what the experts have learned in a language that non-experts can understand.”

Good parenting, says Steinberg, is “parenting that fosters psychological adjustment—elements like honesty, empathy, self-reliance, kindness, cooperation, self-control and cheerfulness.

“There is no more important job in any society than raising children, and there is no more important influence on how children develop than their parents.”

BIGGEST PARENTING MISTAKESBossy Child Laurie and Jim’s 10-year-old daughter, Haley, snooped into her mom’s Facebook account, didn’t like what she read, and became hypervigilant about her mother’s behavior. She reads her text messages, disapproves of her clothing and gets upset if she’s late coming home. Little Haley says she doesn’t trust her mother and needs to track her every move. Dr. Phil tells the parents, “You cannot abdicate control. That’s one of the biggest mistakes parents don’t know they’re making. You don’t want to abdicate control.” He tells Laurie, “You do want to secure your status as the mother. You do need to assert your authority, not just for your own sanity, but for hers.” Dr. Phil recommends Laurie put a password on her computer and phone, learn how to say no and put down clear boundaries for her daughter.

- Don’t abdicate control - Do secure your status - Do assert your authority

Picky Eater Angela says her 9-year-old son will only eat a small list of foods “candy, cookies and dessert, pasta, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Sloppy Joes, hot dogs, apples with peanut butter, grapes, flavored yogurt “and refuses to try anything new. She says family meals have become a battle, and he often goes to bed without eating. Angela worries about the effect his limited diet has on his health. Dr.

Sears says the short list of what her son is willing to eat is actually pretty nutritious. He explains that when his children didn’t like what was served, he didn’t take it personally. “I say, Well, this is what›s served. I›m not making you anything else, but feel free, if you want to go make yourself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Dr. Phil says Angela should pick her battles. He explains that kids control three things: what they take in, what they put out and what they say. They have a lot of choice in these matters. This is their power. Sometimes we have to fight those battles, but those are three that if you can avoid fighting those, you need to avoid fighting them. Dr. Phil explains that she can›t guilt-induce her son into liking something. What you don›t want to do is make this a battleground because it foretells an eating disorder. You don›t want to make this a huge issue. And I promise you, kids will eat the placemat when they get hungry enough, he says. This kid will start eating. He’ll find what he likes, and he’ll start eating, and he’ll go through this phase of being picky.

Dr. Sears says if Angela includes her son in preparing the meals, he can choose foods that he will eat. If he feels like he has control, there will be less anxiety, there will be less resistance. This had become a battle of wills. You don’t want that. You want to disengage from this, Dr. Phil says.

- Don’t pick wrong battles - Do consider child’s desires

Picky Dresser Vicki says her 7-year-old daughter, Raelee, is very selective about what clothes she wears and the way she looks. She changes her clothes repeatedly and throws a temper tantrum every morning if her outfits don’t perfectly match and her shoes aren’t just right. Is this a sign of something more serious? “I just want her to be happy. I don’t want her to worry about the way she looks at 7,” the mom says. Dr. Phil tells Vicki, “I think this is a little girl who, on the upside, is taking pride in how she looks. She pays attention to it. It matters to her if she has a spot on her shirt.” Dr. Phil tells Vicki to consider letting Raelee have an impact on what clothing is bought for her and maybe having fewer clothing choices would help. Dr. Sears says, “She has some anxiety about how she dresses, and I think you’re treating that with more anxiety. You’re yelling at her, her brothers are yelling at her, and she’s kind of getting the message that I’m not good at dressing myself, so I›m going to have to really obsess about how I look. He recommends that Vicki ask her daughter for fashion advice and opinion when she gets dressed, to take the focus off herself. Dr. Phil says he and Robin let their son, Jay, wear his Hawaiian Jams shorts and red high-top sneakers without laces every day when he was young, because it made him happy.

You go with it, and they’ll move through it. She has a fashion sense and a desire. Embrace that. Embrace her nuances, but you don›t want to fight her individuality here. You›re picking the wrong battle.

- Don’t fight individuality - Do embrace a child’s nuances

Animal Phobia Susan says her 6-year-old daughter is scared of all animals and bugs. She refuses to walk from the car to the house if she sees any creature in the yard. Susan says the phobia has been going on for five years, and she worries her daughter is missing out on life because of her fears. Dr. Phil says all phobias come down to a fear of losing control. It’s important for parents not to ignore their child’s fears but to empower him or her with skills for mastery. A therapist can help, using systematic desensitization. “That is where you teach the child to call up a relaxed and calm state and then maintain that in the presence of ever-increasing stimuli. So, first it might just be the thought of an animal, then maybe the picture of the animal, then maybe an animal 30 or 40 feet away, and then 10 feet away, and then you get in what’s called in vivo, where you’re actually in the presence of an animal in the world. Now the good news is this: This is not a serious mental disorder or mental illness. It responds very well to treatment in a very short period of time. This is something that could very well be resolved in a couple of weeks.”

- Don’t ignore an issue that matters to your child - Do empower with skills for mastery

Kissing Curiosity Laura says her 6-year-old son came home from school singing the song, “I Kissed a Girl.” What started out as a few smooches on the playground has escalated. A teacher informed Laurie and her husband that their son and some classmates gathered in a circle, pulled their pants down and exposed their privates to each other. Her son cried when they asked him about it. Later, he was caught kissing more girls. She wants to know if this is normal behavior. Pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears says it’s nothing to worry about. “At 6 years old, when it’s with kids the same age, not an older child or a younger child, generally, we just consider it curiosity,” he says. “In your mind, it’s the same as if he was picking all the other kids’ noses: inappropriate. He’s violating boundaries.” Dr. Phil agrees. “I think this is exploratory behavior. The big mistake parents make here is to either overreact or under react to this.” He says the child needs to be taught where boundaries are, that it’s inappropriate and rude behavior. “You don’t want to shame a child about this. And if they have curiosity, then satisfy the curiosity at home with discussions, with books, whatever.”

- Don’t label the child - Do teach personal boundaries

PARENTING

PARENTING

HOW TO PARENT BASED ON YOUR CHILD’S PERSONALITYWhat is your definition of success as a parent? Most parents have career goals or relationship goals, but fail to set goals for parenting. You need to have a clear definition of success as a parent, and the steps you’ll take to get there. One guest’s definition is seeing her children growing up happy and secure and feeling good about themselves. Dr. Phil says this is a great goal, but adds that all parents should “help their children discover their authentic self — discovering that which is truly, uniquely theirs.” Find your children’s strengths and then go with them.

Do what works. Some parents yell at their children or spank them repeatedly, only to have them disobey.

Dr. Phil advises against this type of parenting. “If you’re doing something that works, then you shouldn’t have to do it over and over again,” he says. If you are parenting effectively, it should change the honor, respect, and obedience in your children. If it doesn’t, you may need to change your style to meet the needs of your kids.

Different children need to be parented differently. “You’ve got to be a chameleon,” Dr. Phil says. “You’ve got to change styles with different children.” For example, if you’re an authoritarian parent, you may want to take a less direct approach with a rebellious child. Allow them to decide some things, and come up with some ideas and solutions.

Spend time with children individually. Celebrate you children’s differences. “I think it’s very important that children feel special at home so they feel special when they go out into the world,” Dr. Phil says. “One of the best ways to do that is for you to have a unique relationship with each one of them.” While Dr. Phil thinks family rituals are important, seperate activities with children can also help them appreciate their individuality.

Modeling is important. Children learn what they live. Are you asking your kids to clean their rooms when they see that your room is a mess? This does not create accountability in children, Dr. Phil says. Do what you say you’re going to do and step up your own game!

Children should predict the consequences of their actions. “When you determine a consequence, it has to be determined on whether it works or not,” Dr. Phil says. One guest would take away her children’s video games if they didn’t clean their rooms, but they would still be able to watch videos. “Personally, I would go home and say, ‘I want the room cleaned, and anything that isn’t in its proper place in one hour is gone. It’s going to the shelter,’” Dr. Phil suggests. By making her children predict the consequences of their behavior with 100 percent accuracy, they will learn to keep their rooms clean, and they will learn the lesson of accountability in life.

BEST NAIL COLOURS FOR WINTER 2012Painting nails is like killing two birds with one stone. On one hand, this is a great way to take care of yourself, a number one step of beauty regime. Since men are not familiar with paining nails (I mean, regular men, not EMOs), polished nails distinguish women from men and make it the easiest way to attract the opposite sex. It’s also a great way of spending your free time at ease. Imagine painting your nails while being completly gassed – definitely not possible.

As we all know, not only clothes are affected with seasons. Nails get seasonal too. In Winter 2012, there are quite a few remarkable nail trends to follow. Colours always play the first fiddle so why don’t you take advantage of winter weather and stay home to try new nail colours? Here they are!

Number one, burgundy. This colour nods to the trendy wine hue palette and it’s a winter classic that never goes out of style. Rich, deep, and sophisticated, it shines with a polished perfection. Wear it with a deep burgundy lip for a classic evening look as seen in Salvatore Ferragamo. Guess who is sporting burgundy nails? Selena Gomez herself!

Number two, silver and gold. Of course not at one go. This season

presents a new take on these classic hues. Silver is more reminiscent of a gunmetal gray whereas gold plays with green undertones. Keep the polish short and square to avoid looking too vampy (Fergie sports the trend impeccably). Search for inspiration in runway as the trend was seen in Chanel fashion show.

Number three, emerald green. You’ll love this shimmering and electrifying colour just like Rihanna does. The rock star-worthy colour extends a huge nail polish trend of last seasons, jade green (aka mint) invented by Karl Lagerfeld himself. Ready to amplify any holiday ensemble? Paint your long round talons in emerald green for an instant effect!

Number four, nude. The contemporary fashion staple: there were pumps, bags and now we have nails. The perfect beige is the modern way to wear a nude nail. Choose the rounder tips to elongate the fingers just like Lady Gaga. Spice it up a bit with a half-moon manicure consisting of black and beige, as in Phillip Lim.

Always keep in mind that good nude nail polish can go from casual to dressy.

The weather outside may be unsightly, but your skin doesn’t have to be. How to banish dry skin and give your winter skin care regimen a boost.

For many people, the cold clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands, and feet. For some people, the problem is worse than just a general tight, dry feeling: They get skin so dry it results in flaking, cracking, even eczema (in which the skin becomes inflamed).

1. Seek a SpecialistIf you go to your local drugstore, you’ll be hard put to find a salesperson who can give you good advice. That’s why going to an esthetician or dermatologist even once is a good investment. Such a specialist can analyze your skin type, troubleshoot your current skin care regimen, and give you advice on the skin care products you should be using.

But that doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck buying high-end products. “Inexpensive products work just as well as high-end ones,” says David Voron, MD, a dermatologist in Arcadia, Calif. “In fact, the extra price you pay for the expensive stuff is often just for packaging and marketing. What’s most important is how your skin responds to the product -- and how you like its feel, not how much money you paid for it.”

2. Moisturize MoreYou may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in spring and summer. But as weather conditions change, so, too, should your skin care routine. Find an “ointment” moisturizer that’s oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. (Hint: Many lotions labeled as “night creams” are oil-based.)

3. Slather on the SunscreenNo, sunscreen isn’t just for summertime. Winter sun -- combined with snow glare -- can still damage your skin. Try applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.

4. Give Your Hands a HandThe skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Wear gloves when you go outside; if you need to wear wool to keep your hands warm, slip on a thin cotton glove first, to avoid any irritation the wool might cause.

5. Avoid Wet Gloves and Socks

Wet socks and gloves can irritate your skin and cause itching, cracking, sores, or even a flare-up of eczema.

6. Hook Up the HumidifierCentral heating systems (as well as space heaters) blast hot dry air

throughout our homes and offices. Humidifiers get more moisture in the air, which helps prevent your skin from drying out. Place several small humidifiers throughout your home; they help disperse the moisture more evenly.

7. Hydrate for Your Health, Not for Your SkinIf you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times: Drinking water helps your skin stay young looking. In fact, it’s a myth. Water is good for your overall health and “the skin of someone who is severely dehydrated will benefit from fluids. But the average person’s skin does not reflect the amount of water being drunk,” Kenneth Bielinski, MD, a dermatologist in Oak Lawn, Ill., tells WebMD “It’s a very common misconception.”

LaPlante agrees. “I see clients at the spa who drink their 10 to 12 glasses of water a day and still have superdry skin. It just doesn’t do that much.”

8. Grease Up Your FeetYes, those minty foot lotions are lovely in the hot summer months, but during the winter, your feet need stronger stuff. Try finding lotions that contain petroleum jelly or glycerine instead. And use exfoliants to get the dead skin off periodically; that helps any moisturizers you use to sink in faster and deeper.

9. Pace the PeelsIf your facial skin is uncomfortably dry, avoid using harsh peels, masks, and alcohol-based toners or astringents, all of which can strip vital oil from your skin. Instead, find a cleansing milk or mild foaming cleanser, a toner with no alcohol, and masks that are “deeply hydrating,” rather than clay-based, which tends to draw moisture out of the face. And use them a little less often.

10. Ban Superhot BathsSure, soaking in a burning-hot bath feels great after frolicking out in the cold. But the intense heat of a hot shower or bath actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture. “You’re better off with just warm water,” LaPlante advises, “and staying in the water a shorter amount of time.”

A lukewarm bath with oatmeal or baking soda, can help relieve skin that is so dry it has become itchy, Bielinski notes. So, too, can periodically reapplying your moisturizer. If those techniques don’t work, go see a dermatologist. “You may need a prescription lotion to combat the dry skin,” Bielinski says. “Or you may have a condition that isn’t simply dry skin and that requires different treatment.”

BEAUTY TIPS FOR WINTER

24 NortherNlifE DECEMBER 2012

SKINCARE&WELLNESS

Winter comes and brings the message of buying peanuts that would be cracked beside the fireplace. Getting cloaked in loads of pullovers, snuggling in quilts and all such cozy thoughts, captures the mind as soon as winter season arrives. But those comfy feelings take a break when your skin gets flawed by the cold winds of winters. Never mind. All such problems can be kept away by taking a little care of your skin during the season. Healthy and flawless skin attracts the attention of everyone with its beauty.

The texture of our skin depends on the external treatments over and above the diet, we are taking. The skin rejuvenates and revitalizes from within, if we take a proper nutritious diet. Moisture can be retained to the skin by drinking good amount of water. Moreover, water also helps to keep skin problems at a distance. A diet comprised of fruits and vegetables also provides water to our body. For softening the skin, primrose syrup and olive oil should be added to the diet. Following natural beauty tips / home remedies can do wonders to your skin.

To clean your skin, make use of green gram powder paste instead of soap. Its regular use would leave you with soft and supple skin.

Before taking a bath, apply a little coconut oil on your body to get rid off dryness and chaps. If you’re using soap, then use a creamy one which will provide extra suppleness to your skin.

In winter, moisturize your skin with good moisturizers and cold creams. It should be applied to your face as well as the body, and at least thrice a day, especially before going to bed.

To retain the lost moisture from bathing, add a few drops of oil to the water that would be used in bathing. Avoid bathing with very hot water during winter because it can lessen the skin’s natural oils.

To treat your legs, add a few oil drops in the water and soak your legs. For hands, use rubber gloves while exposing them to water. Always cover your nails by applying a base coat on them.

Use a good petroleum jelly as a weather shield for your lips. At times, butter can also be used to get extra softness and to cure chapped lips.

SECRETS FOR FLAWLESS SKIN – EvEN DURING WINTER MONTHS

We all know one baby-faced person with perfect skin. No blemishes, no dry spots – just a smooth, clear, radiant complexion. How do they achieve and maintain such a perfect complexion year-round? Here are some secrets.

1.Science and Medicine. The main thing women use to achieve the baby-face complexion are pills. There are several different kinds of pills that can control acne; birth control, hormones, antibiotics or pills specifically made for controlling acne. If you want to go this route, talk with your doctor and find out which would best be suited for you. If you are nature-oriented and do not want to mess around with pills, keep on reading. There are more beauty care secrets!

2.Use Cool Water. Many of us have long been taught that drying out your skin is the best way to control acne. We have news! It’s not. Drying out your skin will cause it to produce more oil to gain back its ‘protective layer’. Washing your face with a mild gel, such as Cetaphil or Spectrojel, and rinsing with cool-lukewarm water will keep your skin clean and clear without drying it out.

3.Keep Hydrated – Inside and Out. Aside from drinking plenty of water each day, fill your sink with lukewarm

or cool water and add a few drops of oil. Coconut oil and Almond Oil are great choices. Hold your breath and soak your face for as long as you can. Come up for air and keep soaking for about 3-5 minutes. Your skin loves to soak up water, and you probably know that after having a long bath your skin feels the most soft and smooth. Finish your soak by immediately applying a light, unscented facial moisturizer and either let your skin air-dry or gently pat dry with a towel.

4.Blot Excess Oil. If your skin is constantly oily and shiny, blot with oil absorbing sheets. There are many different brands and they all have one main goal; to remove excess oil without the need for adding more pore-clogging powder to your face. Keeping as less stuff off your face as possible will keep it looking fresh and healthy.

5.Keep it Clean! The number one rule of maintaining healthy looking and flawless skin is to keep your hands off it. Your hands and fingertips are crawling with bacteria. You don’t want this on your face and seeping into your pores. This is the number one way breakouts occur! Try to keep as much away from your face as possible and always remember to wash off your makeup at the end of each day.

COMMUNITYAWARENESS

Jali was a pretty puppy that lived with a family in Ras Al Khaimah … until they grew tired of her … and threw her onto the streets to take her chances at survival on her own. She ate out of the garbage, drank water that irrigated the plants and was tormented by people, she was literally running scared! Luckily someone noticed what was happening and called the RAK Animal Welfare Centre and we came and got her. We spoke to her owners who were happy for us to take her, they definitely didn’t want her, so we brought her back to the shelter! Poor Jali was in a bad way. She was thin and under-nourished, her coat was full of fleas and ticks and totally matted. There was no option but to shave her completely and it was then that it was discovered the damage that the fleas and ticks had caused. She was bleeding and had skin infections.

Although Jali didn’t look very pretty, one of our volunteers, Tracey, fell in love with her and took her home to live with her family. Tracey’s son gave

Jali a new name to go with her new start to life, he called her ‘Sunny’ …and life for this poor puppy certainly got a lot brighter from then on! Sunny has now regained her health and good looks, and is now a valued member of a family with two children who adore her. As a bonus she has another dog to play with, an older brother, Jimmi, who was himself an ex shelter dog many years ago. Sunny’s story is a common one and something we see over and over again at the shelter. These abandoned dogs blossom with love and care and we do our very best to find them good homes with people who will commit to loving and keeping them safe and giving them a forever home! It always amazes us how forgiving of people they are, even though they have often been treated very badly.

DOGS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE ITEMS!

Left: Jali when she came in to the shelter, badly matted. Right: Jali after her shave. Better, but still far from perfectly healthy and happy.

Jali (now Sunny!) months later in her new family, with her new best friend.

What makes people think dogs and cats are disposable items? They are living and breathing animals that feel fear, pain and hunger just like us. Like our children they are reliant on us for love, care and protection. What message does it give children that see their parents casually discard their pet animals? Dogs are pack animals and they identify closely with the family they live with, bonding closely with them. They are totally confused when the people, who are meant to care for them, abandon them. When a dog or cat joins your family it is meant to be ‘forever’ for the rest of their natural lives…not until you tire of them, or abandon them because they dig holes in your garden or chew your shoes. They are part of your family and don’t deserve to be cast aside when you move house … or countries! If you can’t make a commitment to an animal for the course of its life…please don’t get one. They are not toys and do not deserve to be short term entertainment just to amuse you for a while. If you get a pet it should be with the understanding that this is a commitment to provide that pet a home for the rest of its life, which could be 10-12 years or more.

RAK Animal Welfare Centre is dedicated to improving the welfare of animals in the Ras Al Khaimah area. We have a multi-tiered approach which includes adopting out suitable cats, dogs and occasionally rabbits and hamsters to good homes. Each of our animals available for adoption is healthy and vaccinated, wormed, micro-chipped and de-sexed. They are also behaviour tested to ensure they are suitable to live with families. As an added bonus our dogs also receive basic training in obedience and learn to sit, drop, stay and listen to commands, they are also well socialised with other dogs and people. Just like us, some learn quickly and others take a little longer! We are fortunate to have an enthusiastic staff of young Nepalese men who really care for our animals and under the guidance of our dog trainer, have learnt to train the dogs themselves. If you adopt one of our dogs you can chose to attend our monthly socialisation classes and continue the basic training, as well as giving your dog the opportunity to interact and play with other dogs. As part of every socialisation class you can have your dog checked by our resident veterinarian Dr. Chenjerai Sigauke to ensure your dog is progressing well and remaining healthy. As a gift, when you adopt a dog from us your first three socialisation classes are free, after that there is a 100 dhs fee per class.

1. So as an animal lover how can you help us look after our lovely dogs and cats at the shelter? There are many ways!

2. If you have any free time you can volunteer at the shelter and help us socialise and exercise our dogs and cats. We understand that not everyone has the time to volunteer but there are still lots of other ways you can support the shelter.

3. Our Vet clinic is open to all pet owners in Ras Al Khaimah each work day between 2pm-4pm as well as the first Saturday of every month from 9am until midday. Our Clinic also offers house calls every Thursday afternoon to Mina Al Arab and Al Hamra Village on alternate weeks, you can call our office to make a booking. Our vet, Dr. Chenjerai Sigauke, is not only friendly and approachable, but very experienced and compassionate. By using our veterinary clinic for your pets vaccinations, neutering and health checks you are helping to support the animals in our shelter. Whilst you are there you might like to have a browse in our well stocked pet shop where you can buy quality pet food such as Eukanuba and Royal Canin for your dog or cat, dog chews, pet toys, dog and cat beds, pet shampoos, brushes, combs etc. We

are competitively priced and buying from us ensures the profits go back into the shelter so we are able to save more lives as well as making our shelter animals lives more comfortable.

4. We also provide a boarding service for both dogs and cats. They are both housed in comfortable, air-conditioned rooms and dogs have access to an outside kennel and are exercised twice daily. Places are limited, and over summer we fill up quickly, so it is good to book early. You can rest assured your pets will be well looked after by caring and competent staff. Take a look at the photos of our boarding dogs at play on our Facebook page which can be accessed from the home page of our website www.rakawc.com to see how much fun they have. Information about boarding and rates are also available on our website.

5. You can bring your puppy or dog to our monthly socialisation classes where you can get help with specific behaviours you want to address direct from our dog trainer.

6. We have just set up a lovely grooming room and are in the process of finding a qualified grooming specialist, so in the near future we will be able to offer washing, brushing and clipping services.

7. You can come along to one of our monthly coffee mornings and meet our staff, cuddle a few puppies and get a tour around our facilities to see what goes on here. The delicious cakes and pastries at some of these mornings are very kindly donated by ‘The Cove Rotana’

In an ideal world we would find a home for each stray or abandoned animal, but with the size of the problem and limited resources sadly this is not possible. So what happens to these animals? We conduct a Trap-Neuter-Release programme that is a humane method of population control for the significant over-population problem of cats and dogs in our area. Staff from our centre alongside staff from RAK public works has been trained by WSPA to humanely trap stray dogs and cats. These animals are then brought to our vet clinic where they are vaccinated and neutered and given time to recover from their surgery. The cats are then returned to where they were caught. We will only neuter and return dogs if we are confident that there is someone around to feed them in the long term.

We have also initiated a new programme of Cat Cafes. These are feeding stations that are placed in labour camps and near coffee shops/cafes where stray cats gather. The cats are fed twice a day and all the cats visiting the station are trapped, vet checked, de-sexed, vaccinated and returned. This ensures the cats feeding from the cat cafes are healthy and cannot breed. Stray cat populations can grow at an alarming rate if cats are not de-sexed. It is estimated that two breeding cats and their offspring can produce 420,000 kittens over a seven year period. This is why it is absolutely essential to de-sex cats.

We can only do so much at the shelter, the support of the community is absolutely vital if we are to establish permanent and positive change in the lives of abandoned, surrendered and stray animals in Ras Al Khaimah. There is no overnight solution, this is a slow and steady process that we know will effect change in the long term. We offer an educational programme and welcome visits to our shelter by school children and their teachers. We want to educate the next generation about the importance of animal welfare and instill in them compassion for animals.

We love the saying by Mahatma Gandhi at our shelter. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. Please help us to help the stray cats and dogs of Ras Al Khaimah…they are counting on us …and we just can’t let them down!

See our website for more detailed information on our veterinary surgery, boarding facilities, educational programmes, contact details and to see our dogs and cats that are available for adoption. www.rakawc.com

I once made the statement that I would NEVER drive a mini-van, and with options like the Audi Q7 I feel confident in being able to fulfill that commitment! The Q7 is Audi’s large SUV, boasting a NHTSA 5-star crash rating and an IIHS “Top Safety Pick” status. Seating 7 passengers comfortably, the Q7 TDI clean diesel engine also provides 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. This efficient fuel alternative helps provide the Q7 with an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle certification. Paired with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission, the Q7 can travel more than 600 miles of highway driving on a single tank. The Q7 truly provides the power of a V8 with the efficiency of a V6. The

impressive TDI also pumps out an impressive 225hp and 406ft-lbs of torque, meaning you can easily tow up to 6,000lbs.

On the outside, its aggressive stance, paired with Audi’s family of sporty lines, it clearly carries the Audi badge. It’s extremely cargo-friendly wrap-around liftgate makes loading and unloading a breeze, and allows you to pack appropriately for any adventure. Audi’s intuitive Servotronic steering system offers the driver and passenger a complete piece of mind through the toughest of life’s curves, while the Q7’s adaptive air suspension allows you to adjust ride height and damping settings for optimal on and off-road performance.

Once you step inside of the Q7 you will instantly begin to revel in the impeccably designed lap of luxury. The Q7 provides the most modern and non-cluttered interior and the flexibility of 28 different interior design configurations. Overtop, you will experience breath-taking views from the Q7’s three-panel panoramic sunroof with power sunshade. With a simple touch of the finger, the Audi Q7’s power tailgate opens and closes to a programmable opening height that best suits your needs. The Q7’s flat-fold rear seats provide a convenient 72.5 cu. ft. of carrying space, and the 12-way adjustable power front seats are heated and contain 4-way power lumbar adjustments and adjustable head restraints for maximum comfort.

Topping it all off is the Q7’s prestigious safety features. The available Audi side assist monitors the vehicle’s rear and side blind spots. Warning the driver of any vehicles in the monitored zones with LED warning lights in the side mirrors, the monitor system then begins to flash if a turn-signal is activated while a car is in the warning zone. The optional Audi adaptive cruise control utilizes advanced radar sensors to detect distance to vehicles ahead and maintains a driver-selected safe distance, which can even bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

SAY GOODBYE TO THE MINI-vAN AND HELLO TO FAMILY LUXURY AND SAFETY

Not only kid’s friendly applications give kids a good lesson in technological literacy, but they also help kids stay entertained.

FANTASTIC AND FUN iPhone aPP for kids

This application is a great interactive application that can help toddlers learn their alphabet and their animals. It is full of bright colors, funny images and animations, and entertaining interactions. Alphabet Animals has interactive flash cards with both an animal and a letter on them. The application also speaks the name of the animal and the letter with three different vocal inflections. If your child is learning their alphabet or is a budding reader, Alphabet Animals will keep them very entertained.

Memory Match is a version of the classic memory tile game, but for the iPhone or iPod touch. It helps kids build short and long term memory while helping them focus on manual dexterity. The point of the game is very simple. Kids flip tiles over to reveal a picture or a number. They try to match it to another picture or number. The game is never the same twice, so it helps to keep little ones endlessly entertained.

If you have played the board game Othello, then you have played Reversi. Reversi on the iPhone is a great application for the older kids because it keeps them busy, entertained, and really develops problem solving and critical thinking skills. The point of the game is to place black and white tiles down on a game board and “capture” your opponent’s pieces. The winner is the person who has the most pieces in his/her color. The computer opponent can be tough, so kids will need to develop some perseverance in addition to their problem solving skills.

Math Drills Lite is not the most exciting or playful app, but for a parent or a child that really enjoys math, it is a blessing. Math Drills Lite is a fully customizable math drill game that has a very calculator-like UI. The math problems are fully customizable and you can use it to focus on a set of math concepts that a child might have problems with. The Lite version is free, but the full version costs $1.99 and is well worth it. The full blown app will track the progress of 10 users and adapt automatically to focus on your child’s math weaknesses.

Another vocabulary and writing puzzler that will keep kids occupied is WordSearch Kids. WordSearch kids has hundreds of word searches with child friendly themes and rich vocabulary words. Highlighting words is very easy; all students need to do is touch the first letter and the last letter of a word and the word is “circled”. Progress on a puzzle can be saved which makes WordSearch Kids the perfect casual word game for families on the run.

Brain Toot is the perfect game for fans of the Brain Age and Big Brain Academy games for the Nintendo DS. Brain Toot for the iPhone contains 16 brain training puzzles and games that help kids (and adults) sharpen their thinking skills and problem solving ability. The games revolve around math problems, visual puzzles, and thinking puzzles. This game can be challenging, so it might be best for older kids or even young teens.
