F S A “C , LORD’S ”
The new liturgical year of grace opens as we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent. Our first reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah prepares us for the season that we embark upon today: “Come, let us climb the LORD’S mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths” (Isaiah 2:3). As the new liturgical year begins with Advent, we are conscious that all through the year the liturgy makes present for us the great mysteries of our salva on that reach their highpoint in the person of Jesus Christ.
We also celebrate daily the many ways that we ourselves are incorporated into those sacred mysteries through our par cipa on in the liturgy. Advent starts the liturgical year because it tells us that we are not only passing days here on earth, we are in mately involved in God’s work and that we are responsible for taking seriously our role to cooperate with God’s ac on.
We generally think about Advent as prepara on for Christmas, which it is, but Advent also looks forward to the second coming of Christ at the end of me and also celebrates openness to God’s presence in the here and now. As this Sunday of Advent is celebrated, the scriptures do not turn our eyes toward the historical birth of Jesus in Bethlehem; rather the scriptures assure us that Christ will return in glory with salva on for his people and that we should be wide awake to meet Christ every day of our lives. Ma hew’s gospel gives us an admoni on: “Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come” (Ma hew 24:42). Advent is the season of vigilance and hope.
Advent is the season of wai ng, wai ng to celebrate the joy of Christmas with loved ones. But Advent is also the season when we are reminded of the important events that we wait for in life with joyful expecta on or with fearful hesita on. Each day God gives us the grace to meet the Lord Jesus in his word and sacraments and in one another. We like to understand what God’s will is for us and how that unfolds through our experience and our rela onships. But that takes me. Generally, we don’t like to wait. But in wai ng we learn to reflect on the meaning of our life and experience and to be a en ve to the presence of God in our lives.
Wai ng for events, or news about health, or for rela onships to be healed or reconciled generally leaves us feeling a li le bit on edge. And yet in the heightened sense of expecta on we can be more open to the presence of God. The presence of the Lord Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit give us the strength and the grace that we need to live in obedience to the will of the Father. Advent reminds us to keep our eyes open for the presence of God even in the midst of frustra on and anxiety.
We are called to be prepared to meet the presence of God, as Saint Ma hew’s gospel puts it: “So, too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come” (24:44). The me that God gives us here on earth is filled with daily moments of grace that

allow us to both meet the presence of Christ for others and to meet him in one another; somehow this me of year finds us more open to put aside cynicism, more willing to forgive, and generally more filled with the compassion that makes life more what God, who is love, intends for us. May Advent be a special me of grace for all of us.

Here we go again . . . a word about parking. Please be a en ve to the limited parking spaces that we have. Parishioners and visitors o en express astonishment at the way that parking spaces are wasted and the haphazard way that people park in our lot. Once again, it is important to note that we don’t have spaces to waste. When spaces are wasted because of a failure to pull all the way through the space, then there are people who cannot find a place to park, and those who have difficulty walking find it nearly impossible to make it to the elevator so that they can access the church. It just takes a few extra minutes to be though ul. Please take the me to be mindful of others.
