. Your support is necessary to complete this essen al repair. We already have $171,698 in pledges to date and over half of that has already been fulfilled. For those who have already contributed, thank you. If you have already contributed by making a pledge please complete the form on page 8 in order to reserve your commemora ve brick for the Holy Angels Walkway of Remembrance. Thanks to your generosity, we will be able to begin work on the project as soon as the contractor can schedule it. The work will take place in two phases: 1) The immediate church area and then 2) the rear parking lot when we raise the rest of the funds. This is an exci ng project that will greatly enhance our parish grounds in appearance and, more importantly, in safety. I . Around the same me as the emergency repairs on the school building three years ago, I had hoped to be able to repair our parking lot. Regre ably, the cost of the es mates I obtained in 2015 has risen between 10%-15%. It will never get any cheaper to repair the parking lot – the cost, now, is well over $225,000. There was a minor repair made to the parking lot for around $6,000 two years ago to address the most damaged part. I am embarrassed to tell you that was a bad decision on my part. T
. The area near the elevator and the chapel now becomes like a lake when it rains and floods in the winter and freezes over. It is not safe. But as vital as safety is, as essen al as the Banyan School and the rental of our property is to our future, that first impression that is made when people come to our parish is not incidental. Repairing a parking lot isn’t simply a construc on issue. I , . A parking lot that has holes, cracks and is unsafe does not present a welcoming message to parishioners and visitors alike. We want and need our facili es to be an expression of happiness and joy and welcome to that family new to the neighborhood who is looking for a Church to join. B ,
C . W . Now, we need to address that final exterior piece – our parking lot.
With your help, the first impression that everyone will get the moment they pull into our Church grounds is that Our Lady of the Holy Angels is a thriving, ac ve and welcoming Catholic faith community and the jewel of Li le Falls and star of faith in the Diocese of Paterson that we know it is. You will recall that when we prepared to renovate the church it was said, “It will never work.” You will remember that before we built the elevator, it was said, “Impossible.” Look around at this building. Look at that elevator – how many would find it impossible to get into this church building without it. You made it happen. We will meet this challenge as well. I have no doubt that we will make this happen. No one can do everything but everyone can do something. I

We con nue our reading from the sixth chapter of Saint John’s Gospel on this Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Jesus tells the disciples and the crowd that had followed him in boats across the sea: “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). The crowd is only looking to see more of the signs that Jesus is working but Jesus tells them that they should be seeking something more than perishable food: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled” (John 6:26). The crowd makes a connec on between Jesus feeding the crowd of more than five thousand that we heard in last week’s gospel with the feeding of the people of Israel in the desert with manna from heaven: “Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is wri en: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat’” (John 6:31). Jesus is intent on helping the crowd to understand that they have the opportunity to do more than relive history, they are being drawn into rela onship, friendship with God, through his own Son: “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of man will give you. For on him the Father, God has set his seal” (John 6:27); in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ, God is doing something new and marvelous for his people. We are strengthened by the Eucharist to accompany others along the way helping them to enter into the promise of salva on that Jesus Christ promises. As our Holy Father, Pope Francis, noted in his Apostolic Exhorta on, Evangelii Gaudium:
The Church’s closeness to Jesus is part of a common journey; ‘communion and mission are profoundly interconnected.’ In fidelity to the example of the Master, it is vitally important for the Church today to go forth and preach the Gospel to all: to all places, on all occasions, without hesita on, reluctance or fear. The joy of the Gospel is for all people: no one can be excluded. That is what the angel proclaimed to the shepherds in Bethlehem: ‘Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people’ (Lk 2:10). The Book of Revela on speaks of ‘an eternal Gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every na on and tongue and tribe and people’ (Rev 14:6) [n.23].

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5)
Strengthened by the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ, we are freed from fear and given the privilege of serving him and announcing the gi of life that he offers to all people.
In our first reading for this liturgy from the Book of Exodus we hear that the Israelite community just recently liberated, led by God out of slavery in Egypt are now weary of their journey and so they; “grumbled against Moses and Aaron” (Exodus 16:2). The Israelite people are weary and they need food to con nue their Exodus journey and so the L promises: “I will now rain down bread from heaven for you” (Exodus 16:4). The L ’ con nuing presence with his people assures them that they will never be without what they need to walk the path that he himself sets out for them. But the people will need to learn to trust in God’s providen al care for them: “Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily por on; thus I will test them, to see whether they follow my instruc ons or not” (Exodus 16:4). The gospel reading tells us that the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ, gives us full access to the gi of eternal life. The Bread of Life is food that will not perish and that opens us to fullness of life by con nually living in God’s presence. In our second reading we hear Saint Paul’s Le er to the Ephesians in which he reminds the people of Ephesus that because of the freedom that Christ has won for them they are called to a new way of life: “be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth” (Ephesians 4:24). In the gospel the large crowd that is following Jesus is determined to get close to him to see the signs he works and to hear the words of life with which he feeds the crowd. The crowd receives the good news that Jesus is not like the manna of old that would quickly pass away but rather he is the enduring presence of God that will never leave his people. By ea ng and drinking the Body and Blood of Christ we become part of him. Jesus iden fies himself with living bread that is food for eternal life: “For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:33). Jesus tells the crowd that the bread that the Father now gives will do much more than the manna that he had sent to the hungry crowd of Israelites in the desert: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst” (John 6:25). This is the promise of the Lord Jesus to us; the Bread of Life, his presence, gives us access to divine life, to eternal life, and is our food for the journey all through this life. In his 2005 encyclical le er on Chris an love, Deus Caritas Est, Benedict XVI wrote:
Jesus an cipated his death and resurrec on by giving his disciples, in the bread and wine, his very self, his body and blood as the new manna (cf. Jn 6:31-33). The ancient world had dimly perceived that man's real food—what truly nourishes him as man—is ul mately the Logos, eternal wisdom: this same Logos now truly becomes food for us—as love. The Eucharist draws us into Jesus' act of self-obla on. More than just sta cally receiving the incarnate Logos, we enter into the very dynamic of his self-giving. The imagery of marriage between God and Israel is now realized in a way previously inconceivable: it had meant standing in God's presence, but now it becomes union with God through sharing in Jesus' self-gi , sharing in his body and blood. The sacramental ‘mys cism,’ grounded in God's condescension towards us, operates at a radically different level and li s us to far greater heights than anything that any human mys cal eleva on could ever accomplish.
As we eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist, we receive Jesus who is the Bread of Life and we experience in the here and now the pledge of eternal life that our Eucharis c Lord promises us. As we become one with the Lord in the Eucharist we become one with his way of life that calls us to sacrifice and give of ourselves for others out of love.

their children for the Faith Forma on year that begins in September. The deadline has already passed for registra on but you may s ll register if you s ll wish to do so. If you have not already done so, please register your sons and daughters for our Fall Faith Forma on Programs. Registra on packets are available at the parish office. In order to adequately plan and prepare for our Fall Programs, it is very important that all students are registered as soon as possible. Thank you for giving us the privilege in assis ng you in handing on the faith to your children.
C N One of the most vital ministries in our parish, or any parish, is that of catechist. In order for our faith forma on program to work we are in need of catechists to help us in this vital work of handing on the faith to the young people of our parish. We are in need of more catechists so that our faith forma on program con nues to be effec ve. Please think about serving as a catechist. You don’t need to be an expert teacher; all that you need is a love for the faith and the Lord. Please contact Ms. Trish Filiaci if you would be able to give the gi of your service to the young people of our parish in this important ministry. If you are able to serve as a catechist please know that you will be given assistance to help in this work and that there are many to guide you along the way. Thank you for your willingness to be open to this invita on to take part in such an important work of our parish. Thank you!
C A Many Catholics never completed the process of their full ini a on into the Church by receiving the Sacrament of Confirma on. If you are an adult bap zed Catholic and have not been confirmed but would like to be, please contact me at the parish office or via e-mail and we can talk about the program that will begin in the fall that will lead to receiving the gi s of the Holy Spirit in Confirma on at Easter.
A S Amazon Smile is a program offered by Amazon that allows for a percentage of dollars spent on purchases to be donated to designated charitable ins tu ons. Please see the informa on on page 2 of the bulle n that provides more informa on on how you can designate Our Lady of the Holy Angels to receive a rebate from Amazon for purchases you make on line. Thank you, as always, for your constant generosity and support!
S S Thank you for your never failing generosity in support of our parish. Please remember that during the summer months we s ll con nue to rely on your support to meet our budget for the fiscal year. You are so generous but the decrease in summer collec ons takes a heavy toll. We are just three weeks into the new fiscal year and already almost ten thousand dollars short in what is budgeted. Please don’t forget your parish! Thank you and God bless you for your generosity.
