Dear Friends of Holy Angels:

This past year was dedicated to the preparation for signifi cant changes at Holy Angels. At the outset of the 2010-11 school year, Dr. Jill Reilly announced her intention to retire at the conclusion of the school year.As a result, the Board of Trustees bestowed on her the title of President Emeritus (the fi rst time that role has been given in the school’s history) and launched a diligent, national search to fi nd her successor. In the spring, we welcomed Tom Shipley as the new presidentof Holy Angels, and he quickly assumed leadership duties, beginning a new era at the Academy.

Additionally, we commenced in earnest a capital campaign and began a major renovation of the kitchen and food service area, which enabled us to offer meals with more variety and nutritional value for our students.

What has not changed, however, is the loyalty of our donors. In the fi scal year ending June 30, 2011, nearly 2,000 community members (alumni, current parents, past parents and other friends of the school) made philanthropic gifts to the school. Collectively, they contributed more than $930,000 to this year’s Annual Fund.

On behalf of all of us at the Academy of Holy Angels,I want to thank all of our donors for playing a vital role in the success of our students. They thrive because your generous gifts allow us to provide them with an outstanding academic education steeped in traditional Catholic principles and values, a commitment to community service, and opportunities to excel in co-curricular activities. You’ll fi nd examples of our commendable students throughout this report.

As we begin a new chapter in the Holy Angels story, the challenges before us are clear. It is imperative that we do everything we can to bolster enrollment, keep tuition as affordable as possible, provide a suffi cient amount of fi nancial aid to deserving students, and enhance our fi nancial resources to ensure operating costs are adequately covered.

Even though challenges exist, I fi rmly believe thatHoly Angels is well-positioned to continue making progress — in the advancement of its academic and co-curricular programs and in its ability to acquire the necessary resources to sustain the school.

here are many ways to describe the vision, values, and goals

that defi ne what AHA is all about. One of those ways is to

categorize our efforts in terms of the four cornerstones of an AHA

education:

• Catholic Faith • College Preparation

• Cocurricular Opportunities • Community Strength

In this report, you’ll fi nd a summary of the school’s 2010-11

accomplishments are they relate to the those cornerstones, and

you’ll meet students who exemplify each of them.

CATHOLIC FAITH

The Catholic faith, of course, is at the foundation of AHA’s

existence. During 2010-11 Holy Angels encouraged students to

develop their faith, spirituality, and values in the following ways:

Worship – Students had many opportunities to participate in

worship, during services and liturgies in school and at special

before-school prayer services and Masses throughout Advent and

Lent. The Campus Ministry Team (comprised of senior students)

helped to develop and lead most of these worship events.

Convocation – Holy Angels introduced the concept of short,

weekly convocations this year. These events were created to help

empower and strengthen an already strong and vibrant school

community. Each convocation allows the school to pray as a

community, and the weekly feature topic often focuses on aspects

of Christian values.

Faith in Action – Holy Angels completed the fi fth year of its

Faith in Action program designed to bring elements of faith into

all aspects of school life, including sports and activities. At the

beginning of the year, coaches and team captains gathered for

a commissioning service, which emphasized the importance of

living out the school’s mission. Plus, teams collectively performed

more than 1,100 hours of service to the community.

Cooperation with the Sisters of St. Joseph – During the winter,

members of the Sisters of St. Joseph (CSJ) came to talk with

students in the Christian Nonviolence theology class. The goal

was for students to learn more about the Sisters’ approach to the

concept of nonviolence, but the students also learned a great deal

about the CSJ mission as a whole and about the Sisters’ centuries-

old dedication to serving “the dear neighbor without distinction.”

Theology curriculum – Students at Holy Angels are enrolled in a

theology class every trimester throughout their entire high school

careers. The theology curriculum is broad and deep, ranging from

a survey of church history to a contemporary examination of

what it means to live as a Christian in the 21st century.

COLLEGE PREPARATION

Preparing students to succeed in college is an important focus of

AHA’s academic program.

Excellence in teaching – At Holy Angels, excellent teaching

is demonstrated through a defi ned and measured curriculum.

Teachers work together in Professional Learning Communities

(PLCs) to develop curriculum, help one another integrate top-

notch teaching methods in the classroom, create consistent

testing and assessment procedures, study student achievement,

and fi nd ways to improve instruction, learning, testing, and

analysis on a regular basis.

There are a lot of ways to determine whether this approach is

succeeding. Here are a couple of examples from 2010-11:

• Holy Angels received high marks from AdvancED in a

preliminary exit report after a site visit this winter. The visit

was part of AdvancED’s regular accreditation process for

secondary schools. The assessment team commended AHA

for its PLC process, its AHA Way program, its college-prep

emphasis, Project Laptop, and the College and Career Center.

• This spring AHA received a grant from the Minnesota

Independent School Forum (MISF) to develop a STEM

(Science Technology Engineering Math) program. The goal

is to enhance STEM instruction at Holy Angels by funding

an opportunity for two teachers to earn their graduate



engineering certifi cates at the University of St. Thomas.

In turn, those teachers will develop strategies for the

classroom to connect science and math instruction to what’s

happening in the “real world.” They will also train other

faculty members in integrated STEM activities appropriate to

their fi elds.

Academic rigor and student achievement – Here are a few

examples that demonstrate AHA’s continued dedication to

academic rigor and student achievement

• AP classes: AHA offered 15 college-level Advanced

Placement classes in 2010-11. Nearly 200 students enrolled

in one or more AP classes. Sixty-six percent of students who

took the AP exam at the end of the school year received a

score of 3 or higher, qualifying them for college credit or

advanced placement in college courses.

• ACT scores: AHA students consistently outpace state and

national averages on the ACT test. The AHA average score

is 24.9; the Minnesota average is 22.9; the national average

is 21.1.

• Merit Scholarship performance: In 2010-11 Melanie

Falk ’11 was named a National Merit Scholar, and six AHA

seniors received National Merit Scholarship Commended

Student awards.

• Academic Competition: AHA students deliver outstanding

performances in academic competitions throughout the

school year. Here are just a couple of 2010-11 examples:

The Knowledge Bowl team earned a berth in the state

tournament; Evan McNeil ’11 was one of fi ve high school

seniors nationwide to earn a Senior Travel Award from the

American Association of Teachers of German and the Federal

Republic of Germany; Charlie Haumersen ’11 was named a

Minnesota Scholar of Distinction in Theater Arts.

• College matriculation: 95 percent of the students in the

class of 2011 are enrolled in college this fall.

Return on Investment – A Holy Angels education continues to

be an excellent investment. This spring, AHA seniors accepted

more than $3.8 million in college scholarships.

Project Laptop – AHA completed the fourth year of its

Project Laptop program. Project Laptop is now fully integrated

throughout the school with all students using their own laptop

computers across the curriculum. Students are showing great

competence in their use of online tools. New this year was an

online class in health.

COCURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Opportunities for students – Holy Angels sees cocurricular

activities as an important part of the learning process. In 2010-11,

95 percent of all students participated in at least one cocurricular

activity. That is one of the highest participation rates in the state.

One of the reasons for such continued high participation each

year is the fact that the school is committed to providing a wide

range of excellent programs for students. In 2010-11, we offered

68 cocurricular sports and activities.

Achievement in cocurriculars – AHA students don’t just

participate in cocurricular activities, they excel. Here are some

examples:

• The competition cheer team and the table tennis team both

claimed State Championships. State appearances were also

made by the Starliners dance team, Knowledge Bowl team,

golf team and members of the cross country, alpine ski and

track teams.




• Five AHA students signed NCAA letters of intent to

compete in their sports at the college level. They include:

- Lucas Long – baseball, University of Arizona

- Joe LaBate – hockey, University of Wisconsin

(LaBate also was chosen in the fourth round by the

Vancouver Canucks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.)

- Alex Elvidge – soccer, Embry Riddle Aeronautical

University in Prescott, Arizona

- Charlie Haben – football, Winona State University

- Olivia Schultz – soccer, University of San Diego

• Laura Margarit, AHA’s Athena award winner for 2011,

scored her 1,000th point as a member of the Holy Angels

girls basketball team during the 2010-11 season.

• Joe LaBate was nominated for Minnesota Mr. Hockey

honors, and Lucas Long was nominated for Minnesota

Mr. Baseball honors.

• The following students were named “all state” in their sports:

Laura Margarit — girls basketball; Alexander Elvidge — boys

soccer; Anne Marie Baregi, Rebecca DeNio, Natalie Kerber,

and Ellyn Kuehne — dance.

COMMUNITY STRENGTH

At Holy Angels, our sense of community is indeed our strength,

and we work to build and support community every day. Here

are some of the things we did in 2010-11:

Service – You’ll fi nd service everywhere at AHA — in classroom

projects, in Student Government efforts, in the Campus Ministry

Team’s year-long schedule of outreach, and in the work of the

Faith in Action program. New in 2010-11 was a Senior Service

Day in late May when members of the senior class logged 528

hours of service in one afternoon at various sites throughout

the community.

The AHA Way and social leadership – Holy Angels has

completed the second year of its AHA Way effort. This year, the

focus was on seeing, owning, and solving problems. Through the

AHA Way, students are learning the concepts of social leadership,

and they’re coming to understand that they have the power to

strengthen community by respecting and supporting one another

and by taking the initiative to change things that need changing.

Convocations – You’ll fi nd a description of our weekly

convocations in the Catholic Faith section of this report. These

brief convocations serve many purposes, and they have been

signifi cant in building the school community, increasing school

spirit, and giving everyone a sense that they belong here.

Student organizations – Holy Angels student organizations like

SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), SAS (Students

Assisting Students), Diversity Team, and Student Government

work throughout the year on projects that build community —

within AHA itself and beyond our walls.

Sharing our expertise with others – During 2010-11 AHA

expanded its services to young musicians in nearby Catholic

elementary schools. AHA Band Director Pete Dysart offered

an elementary school band program at Blessed Trinity in

Richfi eld, St. John the Baptist in Savage, and Our Lady of Peace

in Minneapolis.

Legacy SocietyThe Legacy Society provides lasting support for the students of Holy Angels through wills and bequests.

Individuals become members of the Legacy Society by including Holy Angels in a will, creating a charitable trust that names Holy Angels as a benefi ciary, establishing a charitable gift annuity for the school, designating Holy Angels as a benefi ciary in a retirement plan, or naming Holy Angels as a benefi ciary in a life insurance policy.

Presently, 57 donors have joined the Holy Angels Legacy Society.

We Can : The Campaign for � e Academy of Holy Angels

The We Can campaign — which has a $3 million goal — will help

Holy Angels take the necessary and practical steps required to

address current needs while moving the school to its next level of

excellence. The funding components fall into four categories:

FACILITY UPGRADES

• Provide needed renovations (roof, electrical and plumbing)

• Remodel the kitchen

• Update and renew existing classrooms and hallways

• Complete existing Convocation Center space, creating six

new classrooms (replacing the need to use and renovate

current fourth fl oor classrooms)

PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTS

• Support increased demand for need-based fi nancial aid

• Provide funds for teacher needs

• Make targeted investments in technology and other

cross-discipline programs (such as the College and Career

Center, faith formation and service, and leadership and

character development)

MARKETING HOLY ANGELSAND THE CAMPAIGN

• Provide resources to tell the Holy Angels story

• Cover all campaign costs associated with planning,

marketing and completing the campaign

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

• Our longer-term vision for Holy Angels includes a

substantial endowment to ensure the academic excellence

and accessibility of a Holy Angels education

• Planned gifts, through will or estate commitments in support

of Holy Angels, are encouraged as another important way to

participate in We Can: The Campaign for Holy Angels

We are gratifi ed by the early response of our donors. We

have secured more than $2 million in commitments to the

campaign — $1.4 million in cash pledges and $600,000 in estate

commitments.* This support has affi rmed the Board’s decision to

move ahead with the initial roof project in the summer of 2010

and helped us complete the kitchen renovation in the summer

of 2011.

In February 2011, the AHA Board of Trustees launched the Leadership Phase of We Can: The Campaign for Holy Angels. This eff ort was informed by feedback from our broader community regarding the state of Holy Angels today as well as emerging priorities for the future. Nearly 1,000 people completed our planning survey and 80 students, teachers, alumni, parents and friends participated in focus group discussions.

Students honor Alisha Anderson and Eric Mayerfor their examples of character and faithAlisha Anderson ’11 and Eric Mayer ’11 are students who lead with

compassion, generosity, concern for others, and a deep appreciation for the

importance of our faith community. And their peers took notice, selecting

them as the 2011 winners of the AHA Mary Medal and Thomas More Medal.

The Mary Medal (established in 1954) and the Thomas More Medal

(established in 1974) both honor students who best exemplify the

characteristics of the Christian life.

“Alisha is a young woman blest with many talents and graces,” said AHA

English teacher Kathy Hanley. “She supports her classmates with her

enthusiasm, her hard work, and her generous nature. She volunteers; she

tutors; she plans; she organizes; she off ers help wherever it is needed.

She is a true friend. And she’s wicked smart.”

“Eric was a great example of faithfulness and commitment to his peers as

well as the rest of our Holy Angels community,” AHA’s Director of Faith

Formation Michael Kautzman said. “He consistently volunteered to serve

Mass for our all-school liturgies as well as Advent and Lenten morning

liturgies. He conscientiously carried out this ministry with great reverence.”

Madden Zappa helps Dorothy Day Centerclients stay warmMadden Zappa ’12 has a heart for the clients of the Dorothy Day Center,

which provides meals and medical care for the homeless in the Twin Cities

metro area.

While talking with some of the homeless men and women as she served

them breakfast one October morning, she was struck by how many of them

commented that they were cold. She was determined to do something that

would help them stay a bit warmer throughout the winter.

She organized the help of 30 volunteers to make more than 200 blankets,

which were delivered to the Dorothy Day Center in time for Christmas.

“This project was the perfect example of how giving feels better than

receiving,” said Madden. “Seeing everyone’s smiling face and how much

one blanket meant to them was amazing.”

As a guard on the AHA girls basketball team this past year, she made

Holy Angels history by scoring her 1,000th career point during a game

against Burnsville.

“Laura is an invaluable part of our team,” said AHA girls basketball coach

Nathan McGuire. “Scoring is only one facet of her complete game. She is

among the leaders on the team in rebounding and assists as well.”

“It takes a special player to reach such a level in her career,” continued

McGuire. “This milestone represents a lot of hard work and year-round

eff ort for many years on Laura’s part.”

Wealth of opportunities prepare Evan McNeilfor life after high schoolIf you wanted to defi ne the phrase Renaissance Man in today’s terms,

you’d probably look to Evan McNeil ’11.

As an athlete, he won the 2010 Missota Conference championship in pole

vault and qualifi ed for the state track meet. As a student, he achieved a

High Honors designation every trimester of his high school career, received

two academic letters, and earned AP Scholar honors. As an actor, he

portrayed Belle’s father in AHA’s 2010 production of Beauty and the Beast.

As a musician, he plays the cello, bass clarinet, clarinet, and the bagpipes.

As a volunteer, he’s especially active with the PACER Center, a national

nonprofi t supporting families who have children with disabilities.

Evan gives a lot of credit to his teachers at Holy Angels for helping him

to develop and explore his passions. “Without exception,” he said, “my

teachers at Holy Angels have given me the confi dence to succeed.” Evan

took that confi dence with him as he began his fi rst year at Carleton College

in Northfi eld this fall.
