$151,000 P !

T “F F ” C . Your support is necessary to complete this essen al repair. We already have

$151,000 in pledges to date and over half of that has already been fulfilled. For those who have already contributed, thank you. If you have already contributed by making a pledge please complete the form on page 8 in order to reserve your commemora ve brick for the Holy Angels Walkway of Remembrance.

I . Around the same me as the emergency repairs on the school building three years ago, I had hoped to be able to repair our parking lot. Regre ably, the cost of the es mates I obtained in 2015 has risen between 10%-15%. It will never get any cheaper to repair the parking lot – the cost, now, is well over $225,000.

There was a minor repair made to the parking lot for around $6,000 two years ago to address the most damaged part. I am embarrassed to tell you that was a bad decision on my part. T . The area near the elevator and the chapel now becomes like a lake when it rains and floods in the winter and freezes over. It is not safe.

But as vital as safety is, as essen al as the Banyan School and the rental of our property is to our future, that first impression that is made when people come to our parish is not incidental. Repairing a parking lot isn’t simply a construc on issue. I , .

A parking lot that has holes, cracks and is unsafe does not present a welcoming message to parishioners and visitors alike. We want and need our facili es to be an expression of happiness and joy and welcome to that family new to the neighborhood who is looking for a Church to join. B ,

C . W . Now, we need to address that final exterior piece – our parking lot.

With your help, the first impression that everyone will get the moment they pull into our Church grounds is that Our Lady of the Holy Angels is a thriving, ac ve and welcoming Catholic faith community and the jewel of Li le Falls and star of faith in the Diocese of Paterson that we know it is.

You will recall that when we prepared to renovate the church it was said, “It will never work.” You will remember that before we built the elevator, it was said, “Impossible.” Look around at this building. Look at that elevator – how many would find it impossible to get into this church building without it. You made it happen. We will meet this challenge as well.

I have no doubt that we will make this happen. No one can do everything but everyone can do something. I $1,200 – $200.00 . T

. I . I . B .

Every household that makes an investment in this campaign has the opportunity to have a brick engraved with their name, or in memory of a departed loved one, and placed at The Holy Angels Walkway of Remembrance that will be placed near our bell tower – which is, by the way, the Na onal Shrine of Our Lady of the Highway. Each brick is a symbol of our faith and the reality that we all form this community with the strength of our faith built on the founda on stone of Christ.

I . T ,

, H A W R . Each household that makes a pledge or a contribu on to the campaign will be able to designate a commemora ve brick or memorial brick to be inscribed with their name or the names of departed loved ones. Addi onal bricks may be reserved at $200.00 each. Please take advantage of this opportunity to become part of the permanent history of Our Lady of the Holy Angels Parish.

In our gospel reading from Saint Mark for the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus con nues to give his first followers a lesson in discipleship. During these summer months we are disciples at the feet of the Lord seeking to learn from him in order to be open to the will of the Father. We have the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts and the gi of the Eucharist to guide us in the way of discipleship.

From the very beginning of his public ministry Jesus is clear in communica ng to those who want to walk in his footsteps that the path of discipleship is arduous and that it takes steadfast devo on to follow him. Despite the discipline and sacrifice that is required to follow the Lord it should be a joyful experience because the disciples live in close friendship with the Lord and because they have the encouragement of one another as they do the Lord’s work. Faith o en calls us to heavy demands because it is a gi that challenges us to love and empty ourselves of our own wants in order to respond in love to others who need the love and compassion of the Lord. We are never bystanders as people of faith; we are always concerned with the good and the salva on of others.

In order for the disciples to be sure that they are doing the Lord’s work and not their own followers, Saint Mark tells us they report back to Jesus on the results of their first apostolic mission. The disciples are excited to tell the Lord about all that they had experienced and all that they were able to accomplish through the power of God’s word. But Jesus has other plans for them. Rather than listening at length to their stories Jesus has another direc ve for the disciples and it is immediate: “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). Just as there is urgency to the mission the disciples are given to preach the word and heal the sick so, too, the command to spend me in communion with the Lord and to rest in a deserted place is urgent.

Jesus emphasizes the importance of his followers always being a en ve to being open to conversa on with God. The disciples may not place anything above their friendship with God; communion with God requires an effort, renewed over and over again throughout life, to make room in the quiet of our hearts for God to speak to us and guide us. What we do for the Lord is important and it is a gi that we make to the Lord but no ma er what we accomplish it is never as important as living in openness to the promp ng of the Holy Spirit.

While Jesus intends to lead the disciples to a place that is “deserted” so that they may “rest” that was not to be. No ma er where Jesus goes the crowds are drawn to him in the hope of hearing his word, experiencing his healing, and coming into the presence of God’s anointed who promises the fullness of life to all of those who seek a er him. And so while rest was the goal, it was not realized: “People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity to eat” (6:31). Even as we seek a quiet place to rest with the Lord the cares of this life always have a way of following us and demanding our a en on.

If those who first walked with Jesus experienced those kinds of cares and distrac ons we should not be surprised that we do as well. So o en people find that they are distracted in prayer or feel that they are not par cularly aware of God’s presence with them as they seek to pray. That is not unusual. We cannot always expect that our prayers will be answered as we hope or that we will experience God’s presence as we think that we should.

Prayer is a gi that we make to the Lord; it is me that we give to God for God’s purposes. We cannot always have immediate knowledge of what God’s plans are for us but we can be sure that if we are faithful to him that he will always be faithful to us and that he will never leave us without his love and the strength that comes through friendship with him. It is important that we do not become discouraged in our prayer life. We need con nually to seek out those moments, and they may only be moments, when we can raise our hearts and minds in thanksgiving to God and to pe on for God’s assistance.

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5)

In our gospel reading for this liturgy, the crowds con nued to press in upon Jesus and the first disciples even as they sought to find refuge in a deserted place: “So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them” (6:32-33). The crowds were insistent upon being close to the Lord and they were not at all re cent about seeking out his presence; we should not be either.

Each me that we draw close to the Lord to be strengthened with his Body and Blood in the Eucharist we are growing in our friendship with the Lord and growing in our life of prayer, our life of con nual conversa on with the Lord, so that we can be confident that we are always led to be his good and faithful disciples. Our life of prayer helps us to grow in holiness.

Jesus gives us the gi of his Body and Blood in the Eucharist in order to sustain us and to give us the strength that we require to be faithful disciples. The Eucharist is our source of peace and hope and is the summit of all prayer life in the Church.

Our prayer, par cularly our par cipa on in the Eucharist and moments that we might spend in quiet with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament help us to keep open to the signposts that God provides us and helps us to grow in our communion with God so that we are able to live in fidelity to God who gives us life and calls us to the fullness of life that is found in imita on of the Lord Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit.

In our second reading from the Le er to the Ephesians, Paul assures us that Jesus “. . . came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father” (Ephesians 2:17-18). No ma er where we are in life, what stage we feel that we are in our prayer life we can be certain that the Lord con nues to reach out to us and the Holy Spirit con nues to sustain us so that we can have access to the divine life that the Father promises us.

One of the most vital ministries in our parish, or any parish, is that of catechist. In order for our faith forma on program to work we are in need of catechists to help us in this vital work of handing on the faith to the young people of our parish. We are in need of more catechists so that our faith forma on program con nues to be effec ve. Please think about serving as a catechist. You don’t need to be an expert teacher; all that you need is a love for the faith and the Lord. Please contact Ms. Trish Filiaci if you would be able to give the gi of your service to the young people of our parish in this important ministry. If you are able to serve as a catechist please know that you will be given assistance to help in this work and that there are many to guide you along the way. Thank you for your willingness to be open to this invita on to take part in such an important work of our parish. Thank you!

Since the earliest days, the Church has made good use of catechisms to pass on the faith. In first century Syria, the cradle of Chris anity, the Didache (Doctrine of the Apostles) was used. It was a compendium of the apostolic teachings on doctrine, morality, and liturgy. In the fourth century, St. Cyril of Jerusalem gave twenty-four Cateche cal Lectures. In a clear and logical style, he provided the basics of the faith for new converts.

Undoubtedly, the most famous catechism with far-reaching effects was The Roman Catechism. At the me of the Protestant Reforma on, it became necessary to help Catholics understand their faith and respond to the challenges of their day. Thus, under the authority of the Council of Trent, The Roman Catechism was published. Using the four pillars of the Creed, the Sacraments, Morality and Spirituality, this catechism became the doctrinal and methodological paradigm for all catechisms for years to come.

In the United States, up un l the second half of the twen eth century, millions of Catholics were raised in the faith with

The Bal more Catechism. This catechism contained 421 ques ons and answers in thirty-seven chapters. It presented a unified and clear teaching and understanding of the faith. Children memorized the catechism and had, at a minimum, the basic language of our faith.

In our own day, Pope John Paul II published the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This was the first new edi on of the catechism in four hundred years. Using the same four pillars as The Roman Catechism, this new text explains the Creed, the Sacraments, the moral life and prayer. With Scripture, the Fathers of the Church, Liturgy and the magisterium, the catechism not only presents the truths that Catholics believe, but explains why we hold to these truths.

This monumental and much needed work has served as the basis for other catechisms, such as the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults and the catechism Youcat. Individuals and small groups can use the adult catechism to deepen their faith. Young people can use Youcat (Youth Catechism) for an age-appropriate understanding of the faith. Youcat is graphic and easy to read. It gives defini ons of key terms used to express Catholic doctrine; and, it includes a ques on-and-answer format. This catechism draws deeply on Sacred Scripture and the Saints. It has the advantage of being keyed to the Catechism of the Catholic Church so that the user can study the faith more deeply.

The word “catechism” comes from the verb “to catechize,” which literally means “to echo back.” Good catechesis is the handing on of the faith from the one teaching, who can “echo back” what he or she has learned, to the one learning, who can also “echo back,” that is, repeat the teaching. It is worth no ng, therefore, that the very idea of a catechism includes the impera ve of memoriza on.

Already within the Sacred Scriptures, this use of memory is extolled. Immediately a er giving Israel the Ten Commandments, Moses gives a long exhorta on. In laying down the founda on for Israel’s loyalty to the covenant, he does not fail to emphasize the role of memory. He says, “You shall lay up these words in your heart and in your soul” (Deuteronomy 11:18). A basic element of religious life in the Old Testament is remembering God’s words and his ac ons. Thus, with a certain sense of sa sfac on, the psalmist can say, “Your word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).

In the New Testament, the word of Jesus is alive with power in the disciples through their recollec on or remembering (cf. Mk 14:72; Mt 26:75; Lk 22:61). The Church makes her important decisions by remembering the sayings of Jesus (cf. Acts 11:16). The believer remains faithful to the apostolic tradi on by remembering them (cf. 2 Pt 3:1-3). Thus, the essen al facts of the faith are truly passed on in as much as they are remembered (cf. 1 Cor 11:2).

The catechism is a most useful resource in the faithful transmission of the Catholic faith. However, it is not, in and of itself, the answer to the growing lack of knowledge of the faith among Catholics. No catechism, no ma er how well wri en, can ever replace the use of memory in appropria ng the faith that comes to us from the apostles.

Many Catholics never completed the process of their full ini a on into the Church by receiving the Sacrament of Confirma on. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.

Confirmation Program OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Please see the following list for possible ministry opportunities that all students can become involved with:

Fr. English Food Pans Please support the Fr. English Center and support a family or two by making a meal for them to enjoy. Food pans and recipes are available during each confirmation session. All pans should be clearly marked with the meal that it contains and they should be brought back to the next month’s confirmation session FROZEN.

Altar Servers This is an important ministry for our parish and your support and involvement once per month is needed! We are in need of servers at all weekend masses. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming an altar server.

Lectors Readers Wanted! We are in need of lectors to read once per month during one of our liturgies. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming a lector.

Our Music Ministry Needs You! Join us in our Adult and Children’s Choirs as we share our love for the Lord and praise Him through music. For more information, contact Stella at 973-256-5200 x-23 or talk to her after mass.
