Pastor’s Corner

“Me and my household…We will serve the Lord;

We will serve the Lord…Me and my household!” Last Sunday was a great day as we enjoyed our 4th Annual Parish Festival. The Festival committee, under the leadership of Jerry Vekteris, once again did a superb job in coordinating the day – the fruit of their sacrifice of time over several months. Our gratitude also goes to so many parishioners and parish staff who: volunteered their time to serve in a variety of capacities; shared their talent in cooking, singing, painting, dancing or emceeing (thank you Dennis Connelly); or donated food items, supplies, or their treasure for the success of the festival. Without all of you we could not have had such a fantastic day! We were also fortunate to have Bishop Sullivan join us once again to celebrate as a parish faith community! Though he had other things scheduled on Sunday he wanted to be with us for such a joyful occasion. And the Lord certainly answered our prayers! Not only didn’t it rain, it was bright and sunny with the temperature reaching close to 90º - unusual for mid September. Yes, God was truly good to us as we gathered, shared and enjoyed the experience of being with one another as a parish family. It was a perfect opportunity to kick-off the next phase of our Discipleship initiative: Family Discipleship – how we, who have grown in our personal Discipleship to Christ, can now be a catalyst in our natural family and parish family to help our spouses and relatives and neighbors ‘rediscover Jesus’. We have a rich history in our parish of families who have given so much to the Church community. They were Disciples of their time and we still experience the fruit of their service. The two pillars of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish (the former St. Nicholas and Assumption Parishes) are the foundation that we continue to build upon as modern day Disciples. At our Festival the Lord gave us a ‘Holy Spirit’ moment to remind us that He is with us; surprising us with His all-knowing power, so that we do not become discouraged but continue to trust in hope in His amazing grace! This God-incidence began on Saturday (September 17) when Dennis Niceler brought me a gift for the parish. It was a framed, original copy of the blueprint for the 1925 Assumption Church building that he was giving in memory of his parents Don and Margaret (Peg). This document recognized the Wiegand family, who donated the land for the Church building. There were other families, including John and Anna Guenther who also donated property for the rectory, school and shrine, but this blueprint was specific to only the Church. Then at our Festival on Sunday, when we opened the cornerstone of the 1925 Church, inside a small metal box we found 3 coins (a penny, nickel and dime) – perhaps a reference to the story of St. Nicholas giving 3 gold coins to the parents of 3 girls to be used as a dowry – along with a folded, faded piece of paper, that was bleached & blank from time and temperature except for a small vignette of a blue-colored field containing a few legible words. These words were identical to the boundary description on the blueprint donated by Dennis! Who would have imagined that the item presented on Saturday would be the very same item found in the 91 year old time capsule! Except God, of course.

Peace, Fr. Nick

Dear Friends,

On Friday, October 7th, at our 9:00 Liturgy, the 2016-201 Student Council will be installed. The Student Council of ARCS engages our students in a variety of community service, fundraising, school leadership and school spirit projects. This year’s leadership group includes Aidan Brandt- President, Haleigh Schafer- Vice- President, Sarah Reed- Secretary and Kathleen Walls- Treasurer with Erin Brennan and Christopher Finan as the 8th grade class representatives. The class representatives from 7th grade are Julianna Bobe, Rebecca Silipena, Emilia Fedasz and Samantha Keough. The sixth grade representatives are Molly Brennan, Melissa Ledwold, Lorena Saavedra and Riley Thomas. Newly elected 5th grade representatives include Abigail Reed, Jenna Petruzzi, Gracie Pierce and Hanna Watson.

We are very proud of the work that this group undertakes. They will begin the school year with a denim dress down for the entire school on Friday, October 14th. The donations will go to support the Christiana Rush Fund, a local breast cancer support group which aids families that require extra funds to meet their daily needs, as they move through their treatments.

All are invited to attend our opening liturgy. The school choir (students from grades four through eight) has begun practicing to lead the student body in song.

Thanks to all for your continued support. God bless you,

Mary Ellen Schurtz

House of Charity

DID YOU KNOW - the House of Charity is a donor choice for many employee giving campaigns?

Many businesses will begin their Employee Giving Campaigns this month and continue to solicit donations through the fall months. Employee Giving/United Way campaigns give us an opportunity to direct our donations to the charities that best represents our beliefs, interests and social concerns.

Ask your employer for a pledge card and be sure to:

In the Donor Choice Section, designate the “HOUSE of Charity“ Ask to be acknowledged! This ensures our parish will receive

credit toward our House of Charity goal. If the agency requests a code for your donor choice…these

codes may be found on the House of Charity website under “Employee Giving Campaign” and in the Catholic Star Herald.

Your donation to our House of Charity helps to build, support and maintain many programs, ministries and services throughout our parishes and communities. These programs save lives and build futures. Thank you so much for your past, present and future support of our House of Charity fundraising campaign.

CINDERELLA CHEESECAKE SALE – Time is getting closer to ordering your cheesecakes for Thanksgiving. Flyer should be out in two weeks. Cost went up $1 but it is well worth the price.

Our Annual Baby Shower will take place this year the weekend of October 29th & 30th. This year we are going to try and do something a little different. We will have a speaker with us that weekend. They are from the Good Counsel Homes who serve both the Camden and Trenton Diocese. They run 4 homes for unwed mothers and work with them even after they have their child. You will be giving a small baby bottle to take home and to put your loose change, check or dollars in. You will be asked to return the following weekend. By doing this, it gives you the opportunity to buy a gift or make a donation. It will be your decision. Some people like to buy gifts and they are in need of those items as well. Items needed: clothing, diapers, winter onesies 3-9 months old, crib sheets, blankets and any items for infants will be greatly appreciated. Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the parish office. Their website: Goodcounselhomes.org if you would like to review.
