Pastor’s Corner

“Me and my household…We will serve the Lord; We will serve the Lord…Me and my household!”

In the dioceses of the United States, Monday (January 23) is designated as a “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”. Normally, this would also be the day for the annual March for Life in Washington D.C.; however, every four years this date coincides with the days surrounding the Presidential Inauguration so the March will be held on Friday, January 27 this year. It is sad that we have to assign a day to pray to protect the life of unborn children. But it is not surprising that we have reached this point; for our fallen human nature will continue to spiral into the dark depths of sin if we remain closed to the redemptive mercy of Christ, offered to all who conform (surrender) their will to His. How a person who has been blessed, not only with the gift of life, but with the ability to “live and move and have being” can rationalize the destruction of life in the womb as a positive choice or as a right of another to decide is difficult to fathom. Similarly, what does it say about our government when the extermination of the innocent is deemed permissible and legal. Our society defines prejudice as “prejudgment or forming an opinion before becoming aware of the relevant facts of a case” or “any unreasonable attitude that is unusually resistant to rational influence” or as a “feeling, favorable or unfavorable, toward a person or thing, prior to, or not based on, actual experience” (c.f. Wikipedia). Is it not prejudicial, then, to reject a child before seeing, hearing, touching, cuddling or knowing them? How can we decry other forms of prejudice (sexism, racism, religious persecution, or discrimination based on age, nationality, or gender) if the most simple, inculpable and vulnerable among us are discarded as waste or used for experimentation? There are memorials built to remind us of such atrocities from our past and to warn of how cooperative with evil any of us can become. Less than a month ago the world celebrated Christmas – when the almighty, unlimited God humbled Himself to take on our humanity in the womb of Mary, His mother. In the encounter between Mary and Elizabeth, the Gospel gives powerful testimony to the presences of life in the womb as John the Baptist ‘encounters’ Christ. The hidden presence of God in the form of a child gives great weight to the understanding of the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Maybe there is a correlation between the lack of acceptance of life in the womb and the disbelief of the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist? On Monday and throughout the week I encourage us all to pray for Life to be respected at all levels, but in particular for the protection of the unborn. Each Wednesday we offer Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM in the Chapel at our Assumption site. Taking an hour, or half-hour, or 15 minutes to stop by and pray for this cause would be a good way to join the Church in seeking Divine assistance to change the hearts and minds of those who are misguided and allow God’s children to experience what we hold on to and defend in so many ways – “the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Peace, Fr. Nick

BREVE COMENTARIO A LA LITURGIA DE HOY

BUENA HARINA HACE BUEN PAN.

A MESSAGE FROM

DR. JOHN WOOD, COMING TO

DO A MISSION DURING LENT

AT OUR PARISH

To my brothers and sisters in Christ, This is John Wood, author of “Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Mission: 5 Steps to Winning the War Within”. I am honored to team up with Matthew Kelly’s Dynamic Catholic Institute to bring the message of the universal call to holiness to your diocese. I will be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Galloway, NJ on March 25, 2017 and I am beyond excited for this day. I am an eye doctor by profession. It is my vocation to help people see the world more clearly, but since the release of my book in 2012 I have had many opportunities to help people see the truth more clearly. The truth is this: we have an amazing gift in our Catholic faith! We are all called to be saints, and everything we need to accomplish this mission is in the Catholic Church! But the Catholic Church is a sleeping giant. Together we can wake her up. Please consider joining us on March 25th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. I promise it will be an experience that will help all of us encounter the Holy Spirit in a life changing way so we can “set the world ablaze” as St. Catherine of Siena said we are called to do. Rediscover your faith, learn how to spread the faith, and win the battle raging inside each one of us. Please come and invite your friends and family. You won’t regret it. See you on March 25th! Become a saint. Nothing else matters.
