Pastor’s Corner

“Me and my household…We will serve the Lord; We will serve the Lord…Me and my household!”

In last Sunday’s Gospel the Samaritan woman said to Jesus, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ; when he comes, he will tell us everything." Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one speaking with you."

This week, John the Evangelist presents to us the account of Jesus curing the blind beggar, who was subsequently interrogated by the Pharisees and thrown out of the synagogue. On finding the man Jesus asks him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" The blind man responds, "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" Jesus said to him, "You have seen him, the one speaking with you is he."

Imagine seeing, hearing, touching Jesus, the Christ; true God and true man! Picture that encounter: you and Jesus. Put yourself in the Gospel setting. Where does the meeting take place; in Jerusalem, by the Sea of Galilee, at Nazareth? How does he look, what is he wearing, what type of voice does he have? Is it daytime, nighttime, summer or winter? What does He say to you? Take a moment to think about that – seriously, close your eyes for a moment and think about what he says to you and what you say to him. (Close your eyes!)

Ok, if you are reading this sentence it means your eyes are now open (just like the blind man in the Gospel) and you have just finished a type of prayer called imaginative prayer – a key component in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola.

During Lent we are instructed by the Church to enhance and embrace 3 particular disciplines: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. How has your Lenten prayer experience been going? Have you increased your prayer life in the last 3 weeks? Taken time for God? – or better yet – for yourself; since prayer doesn’t assist God in anyway because He’s already perfect! Prayer helps us!

I think one of the challenges to increasing our praying (either in quantity or quality) is that we may know only one prayer form (the way we pray). There are many types of praying that can benefit us in our faith journey. I found a good online resource that presents an outline of different prayer forms and provides links to further your understanding. It is entitled “Methods of Praying with the Scriptures” by Rev. Felix Just, S.J. (http://catholic-resources.org/Bible/Prayer-Methods.htm).

I hope this website can help you in developing a better way to communicate with our Loving and merciful God and strength your relationship with Him. In time, perhaps during this scared season of Lent (or maybe it happened a few minutes ago), I’m sure you – like our sister and brother in the Gospel – will here Jesus say, “I am he, the one speaking with you.”

Peace, Fr. Nick
