Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

PRAYER

“Almighty, ever-living God, you have given the human race Jesus Christ our Savior as a model of humility. Help us to bear witness to you by following his example. Amen.”

Courageously Living the Gospel

April is a month of promise and hope. Let our prayer for April be an active prayer to spread love daily by sharing smiles. To a friend, family member, neighbor or stranger, please smile and pray in your heart "Jesus, bless us and keep us this day to do your will. Amen" No matter who we are, what we have, or what time of day or night, remember that all of us serve each other and the Lord by our constant prayer. Amen.

Intro: Lent ends right before the celebration of the Last Supper Mass on Holy Thursday evening, the start of the Triduum (3 days) of his Passion, Death and Resurrection. But before all these, we celebrate Christ’s entry into Jerusalem for both the feast of Passover - and for his own Passover – from death to resurrected life. 1st Reading: Is 50: 4-7 The first reading is from Isaiah’s song of the suffering servant. In the face of trial and persecution it ends on a note of faith and hopefulness in God. Christians have always seen Isaiah’s suffering servant as prefiguring Christ. Like Christ, the suffering servant’s self-emptying sacrifice is rooted in his faith in God. 2nd Reading: Phi 2: 6-11 This letter of St Paul is one of the earliest hymns of praise to Christ. It sings of the self-emptying love of Christ and how the glory of God shone through him in his ultimate sacrifice. Gospel: Matt 26: 14 – 27:66 We hear the Passion narrative according to St Matthew. He tells us about the circumstances of the Christ’s Passion and his death on the cross for all mankind.

Baptism: Registered parishioners should contact the office to make arrangements. If possible, this should be done at least three months before the birth of your baby. Baptisms will be celebrated in April, August, and December.

Marriages: Registered parishioners should contact the office at least one year in advance of making marriage arrangements.

RCIA: This process is open to anyone interested in becoming a member of the Catholic Faith. Please contact the office.

Going into the Hospital: Please contact the office if you need a priest to come to your home to anoint you, or to be anointed at a weekday Mass.

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe for the Protection from Coronavirus

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliv-erance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Although public Masses have been suspended,

Fr. Erwin and Msgr. Cesar continue to celebrate Masses

privately for all of your intentions and the health and well being of

everyone.

Palm Sunday

The Gospel this Sunday is the reading of the Lord’s passion

from Mark’s Gospel as we celebrate Palm Sunday and enter into Holy Week. Palm Sunday is one of only two days when we, the congregation, actively participate in the proclamation of the Gospel. The other occasion is Good Friday.

As we read the account of the Lord’s passion – how Jesus was betrayed by Judas, one of His followers – how He was falsely accused – how Peter (the rock) denied Him three times – how He was brutally beaten and

scourged and made to carry His own cross – and finally how He was put to death by crucifixion, our hearts are naturally filled with sadness.

When you think about it, there are times in our lives when we betray Jesus through our actions, times when we deny our identity as Christians by not standing up for our faith, and times when we fail to love Christ by failing to love others. It takes courage to live as a Christian in today’s world, and to be true to the faith. It takes courage to stand up for the dignity of all human life from conception to natural death. It takes courage to promote and defend marriage as a union of one man and one woman for life. It takes courage to forgive someone who has hurt or offended us.

When we do so and face rejection or ridicule, we can unite our suffering with that of Jesus on the cross.

While we are sorry that Jesus had to die for the forgiveness of sin – for the forgiveness of our sins, we should also be filled with gratitude that He did so. As we reflect upon the Lord’s passion this Sunday, consider what the Lord has done for us – what the Lord has done for you, and how we will respond to Him by living lives of love and gratitude.

How is the rite of foot washing significant? The washing of the feet represents the service and charity of Christ, who came "not to be served, but to serve.

Many important events occurred on the original Holy Thursday.

These events are recorded in the gospels happening on Holy Thursday during that day and after midnight.

Jesus: -Sent Peter and John to arrange for them to use the Upper Room to hold the Passover meal. -Washed the apostles' feet. -Held the first Mass. -Instituted the priesthood. -Announced that Judas would betray him. -Gave "new commandment" to love one another. -Indicated that Peter had a special pastoral role among the apostles. -Announced that Peter would deny him. -Prayed for the unity of his followers. -Held all the discourses recorded across five chapters of John (Jn 13-18). -Sang a hymn. -Went to the Mount of Olives. -Prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. -Was betrayed by Judas. -Stopped disciples from continuing violent resistance -Healed the ear of Malchus, the high priest's servant, after Peter cut it off with a sword. -Was taken before high priests Annas and Caiaphas. -Was denied by Peter. -Was taken to Pilate.

Holy Thursday is sometimes called "Maundy Thursday". The word "Maundy" is derived from the Latin word mandatum/"mandate." In English: "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you." Holy Thursday is sometimes called Maundy Thursday because it was on this day that Christ gave us the new commandment--the new mandate--to love one another as he loves us.

The Mass of the Lord's Supper Careful attention should be given to the mysteries which are commemorated in this Mass: the institution of the Eucharist, the institution of the priesthood, and Christ's command of brotherly love.

After the Mass of the Lord’s supper. After Mass the altar should be stripped. Any crosses in the church be covered with a red or purple veil.

The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum—from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday.

Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery. The liturgical services that take place during the Triduum are: Mass of the Lord's Supper, Good Friday of the Lord's Passion and Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord.

Why is this day called "Good Friday"?

The origin of the term Good is not clear. Some say it is from "God's Friday" (Gottes Freitag); others maintain that the name is based on a Medieval use of the word good where it meant "holy." Thus "Good Friday" would have come from "Holy Friday," the same way we have Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday.

Are the sacraments celebrated on Good Friday? For the most part, no. Good Friday is the only day of the year on which the celebration of Mass is forbidden. On this day, in accordance with ancient tradition, the Church does not celebrate the Eucharist.

What happened on the first Holy Saturday? Here on earth, Jesus' disciples mourned his death and, since it was a sabbath day, they rested.

Luke notes that the women returned home "and prepared spices and ointments. On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment" (Luke 23:56). At the tomb, the guards that had been stationed there kept watch over the place to make sure that the disciples did not steal Jesus' body.

Good Friday is the most solemn day of the Christian year. It is the day our Savior died for and the day we were redeemed from our sins by the voluntary death of

God Himself at the hands of man.

How do we celebrate Good Friday today? On this day, when "Christ our passover was sacrificed," the Church: -meditates on the passion of her Lord and Spouse, -adores the cross, -commemorates her origin from the side of Christ asleep on the cross, and intercedes for the salvation of the whole world.

Events on the first Good Friday: During the night, Jesus had been arrested and taken before the high priests Annas and Caiaphas. It was during this time that Peter denied him. According to the gospels, Jesus: -Was taken before Pilate in the morning -Sent to Herod -Returned to Pilate -Was mocked and beaten -Saw Barabbas released in his stead -Was crowned with thorns -Was condemned to death -Carried the crushing burden of his cross -Told the weeping women what would happen in the future -Was crucified between two thieves -Forgave those who crucified him -Entrusted the Virgin Mary to the beloved disciple -Assured the good thief of his salvation -Said his famous seven last words -Cried out and died

The service of light In so far as possible, a suitable place should be prepared outside the church for the blessing of the new fire, whose flames should be such that they genuinely dispel the darkness and light up the night. The paschal candle should be

prepared so that it may evoke the truth that Christ is the light of the world. The procession, by which the people enter the church, should be led by the light of the paschal candle alone. Just as the children of Israel were guided at night by a pillar of fire, so similarly, Christians follow the risen Christ. The light from the paschal candle should be gradually passed to the candles which it is fitting that all present should hold in their hands, the electric lighting being switched off.

Are the sacraments celebrated? No, on this day the Church abstains strictly from the celebration of the sacrifice of the Mass.

The Easter Vigil The order for the Easter Vigil is arranged so that: after the Service of Light

and the Easter Proclamation (which is the first part of the Vigil),

Holy Church meditates on the wonderful works which the Lord God wrought for his people from the earliest times (the second part or Liturgy of the Word),

to the moment when, together with those new members reborn in Baptism (third part),

she is called to the table prepared by the Lord for his Church—the commemoration of his death and resurrection—until he comes (fourth part).
