THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
We have a unique episode in the Acts of the Apostles today. A whole roomful of people are baptized with the Holy Spirit before they are baptized with water! The verb used—“the Holy Spirit ‘fell’ on them” (Acts 10:44)—is characteristic of the way the Spirit works throughout the book of Acts: powerful and surprising. Though this “baptism” is not the normative way the New Testament describes baptism, it is still a good reminder today that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by whether or not we pour water, but rather that our sacramental signs reveal the presence of the Spirit at work among us. And we have a double reinforcement of how this work is accomplished from a Letter and a Gospel bearing John’s name. It is love, self-sacrificing and self-giving love, that manifests the Spirit of Jesus in our midst. It is love that is the greatest of commandments. The Spirit is manifested equally through those who live in that love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - The gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also (Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48). Psalm - The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power (Psalm 98). Second Reading - God is love (1 John 4:7-10) or 1 John 4:11-16. Gospel - No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (John 15:9-17) or John 17:11b-19.

Jesus’ commandment is that His disciples love one another, even to the point of laying down their lives, if necessary. What gifts of myself – my skills and talents, my time and resources—will demonstrate my love for Gods people?

Love one another
“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love.’” – John 15:9
Sometimes loving one another is easier said than done. In our use of words today we often describe people or events to the extreme. “He’s the greatest ever!!” or “I hate this or that.” Same with the word “love,” such as “I LOVE Football!” or, “I love pizza” or “I just loved that movie.” The word, “Love” is a powerful word. When you tell someone you love them it can evoke an emotional response. You are sharing your deepest feelings and opening your soul to them. In today’s Gospel from St. John, Jesus tells His disciples, “As the Father loves me, so I love you. Remain in my love.” Jesus goes on to talk about the depth of His love, and that He would lay down His life for them. He later gives them a three-word command: “Love one another.” Our world today seems to be in constant turmoil and we see this on social media. We hear cases of road rage and see violence on the news all the time. This is a contradiction of Jesus’s command to us to love one another. It’s easy to love your parent, relatives, and even a pet. Sure, you might become angry or upset with something they say or do, but you still love them. But what about the stranger—those in other vehicles, on social media, or on the other side of the political aisle? What about those on the side of the road asking for help? What about those of different skin color, faith traditions or sexual orientation? Jesus commanded us to love all, not just a few. That means showing compassion, mercy, and forgiveness, while sacrificing your personal feelings for the good of your brother or sister, friend or stranger. We are taught to hate the sin, but love the sinner. Have the courage to show love to someone who has offended you by forgiving them. And strive to love those who are difficult to love. Bishop Gregory Parkes
Imagine what visitors to the Catholic Church must think when they attend Mass for the first time. They probably notice there are times when we sit, stand, and kneel. The most reverent part is during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, when we kneel in awe at Jesus’s presence in the Eucharist. After receiving Christ in the Eucharist is it appropriate to return to our seat, kneel and thank God for allowing us to be in his presence. A priest once described these actions by saying, “We stand to pray, we sit to listen, and we kneel to worship.” It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been away. You are always invited to the Mass to encounter Jesus, who welcomes you with open arms. To learn more, visit WelcomingYou.org.

May 1st is the last market for the season. We close for the summer and reopen Labor Day weekend. Drop off your donations between 1:30 to 3:00 PM on Wed. & Thurs. at the
garage. Call the office when leaving home and we will be ready for you. Sell your goods for $10 a space. Reserve by calling Rose Mary 527-6459.
Attention Snowbirds; the Food Pantry needs your help! During the winter months your generous donations keep our pantry fully stocked. However while you are away taking a break from the summer heat the need here continues and the shelves at the Food Pantry get a little bare. Here is a great idea in how you could help. Before you depart for your journey north just empty your pantry of any unopened items and bring them to the office. That way nothing expires while you are gone! Or you could just drop an extra donation in the collection basket marked “OLOG Food Pantry” before you leave. Either way we thank you for your ongoing generous support.
If you have had a change of Address & phone number, please contact the parish office at 746-2144 so we could update our records. Thank you so much for your kind assistance.
