Dear Parishioners at
Our Lady of Grace,
Happy Third Sunday of Easter,
The Easter Season (Easter tide) or as it is
called in most languages, the Paschal Season,
is indeed the season of celebrating Christ’s
death and resurrection.
We tend to think of it as the resurrection time
exclusively, but it is not that. The mysteries
of Christ’s suffering and death can never be
separated from the mysteries of his rising
and rising to new life.
We see this so beautifully described in the
first reading. The Apostles were
proclaiming the good news and instead of it
and them being received with joy they were
made to suffer. But this caused them to
rejoice.
It is like the Gospel as well. The suffering of
the long night of fruitless searching for fish is
not disconnected from the great rejoicing at
the super catch directed by the risen Lord. It
is part of God’s plan for us every day that this
paschal rhythm work in us and in the world.
It is often the case that we are working at
things and they are not fruitful, or we are
proclaiming Christ by our words and our
deeds and we are outright rejected and made
to suffer for it.
However, we must encourage each other to
persevere, for these things will lead to the
rejoicing of the resurrection.
In our families and with friends,
neighbors and coworker groups, we are often
called to preach the Gospel, invite them to
Church or back to Church but we don’t
because we are afraid of the rejection or the
lack of results. We will never get to the joy of
the resurrection this way.
The truth is, that the rejection will cause a
rejoicing and the lack of results will be
followed by a super result.
It isn’t unlike an EMT. Imagine you were an
EMT and you had to do some gruesome work
after the carnage of an accident. It would be
something we might wish never happened or
needed to be done. But we, if we were a good
EMT, would show up and do our best. The
next day, driving down the street, we would
be rejoicing as we turned down that same
street, for it is not the even more horrible
scene it would have been had we not served
the dead and the community by suffering
through the work. The unattended accident
scene would be indeed, hell to behold should
it remain for the next day.
We need to encourage each other to go
through the darkness and suffering each
day. It has been revealed that it is God’s plan
that the fruitless and suffering times will lead
to dancing for joy and super fruitfulness.
PS. I got the number of people who were
brought into full communion wrong. Some
are still on their way during the Easter Sunday
Masses so we will have the full and accurate
report at Pentecost. God is gooooood.
In Christ,
Fr. Jeremy St. Martin
