SERVICE REPORT

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• For many years, the Mission was cushioned against reductions in outside revenue because we derived approximately one-third of our funds from the salvage and resale of household items, furniture and clothing. As a result of the severe economic downturn, we have seen a substantial decline in clothing and furniture donations, as folks keep things longer. Likewise, sales in our Carroll Street store, which predominantly serves Trenton’s low-income residents, have declined. Fortunately, fundraising from the community at large, corporations, foundations, government, and our signature fundraising event, the Adam Shanks Memorial Mission Miniature Golf Tournament, has remained fairly constant.

• Through an innovative production program with Hutchinson Industries whereby residents are afforded the opportunity to provide work on-site, this year 44 residents participated in on-site production work at the Rescue Mission and secured funding towards their re-entry.

• Thanks to our many community partners and volunteers who provide the materials for the Mission’s Industrial Salvage program, this year 101 residents shared in the sales from the store operations through our work therapy incentive program.

• We are very proud that 22 residents secured employment while participating in the Rescue Mission’s residential treatment program during this period.

• It took many years but the Perry Street Permanent Supportive Housing Project, located at the corner of Perry and Carroll Street in Trenton, is almost a physical reality. Sometime in the next year, 15 individuals who were previously homeless will be moving into beautiful new studio apartments and receiving supportive housing services. In January of this year, the Mission received notification that it had been granted $2,736,000 in Special Needs Housing Trust Funds from the New Jersey Housing and Finance Mortgage Agency. This was the final piece of a complex funding puzzle that included external financing from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Federal Home Loan Authority, the City of Trenton, Hopewell Valley Community Bank and the Corporation for Supportive Housing. The project is truly a triumph of collaboration.

• On Wednesday, March 1, 2012, Governor Chris Christie held a press conference at the Mission to announce details of, and answer questions pertaining to, his mandatory drug treatment initiative for non-violent, drug addicted offenders. Prior to the press conference the Governor toured the Hutchinson Industry Project and talked to Mission clients. The Governor indicated that “what folks here at the Rescue Mission do … is they make miracles happen. And if you are privileged enough to watch a miracle happen, it affects your life. And it’s always affected me.”

• For the sixth time, the Mission has earned a coveted 4 star rating for fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency from Charity Navigator, the leading independent third-party evaluator of nonprofit agencies in the United States.
