ANNUAL REPORT July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016

Breaking the cycle of abuse, one family at a time

Message From the Executive Director

Child abuse is a tough subject to address. All too often, abuse appears to surface only when a family is in dire crisis. Our unique goal at the Child Abuse Prevention Center is to serve families on the brink of crisis—empowering them to break the generational cycle of child abuse and family violence. Our approach is to “go where the need is”—typically in homes—and connect with families where their risks are. While we are making great strides, we cannot meet the needs of the children and families in our community alone.

Fortunately, the community rallied around our kids and families in this past fiscal year to provide incredible value for our program participants. We were able to continue to innovate and grow to meet the critical need in our community. Here are just a few of the remarkable accomplishments that our community was able to achieve for the benefit of our children:

• Over 20,000 children and parents built a more stable home environment through our programs.

• Our Families Helping Families effort connected over 588 volunteers to 412 of our most at-risk families to bring calm, peace, and stability to their lives.

• Our partnership with the Ragnar Relay Series connected us with over 7,000 runners and raised much needed funds.

• Our speakers like Anika Ortiz and Vanessa Dixon inspired our community with their personal stories of overcoming abuse and creating brighter futures for their community.

• Our leadership in countywide collaboratives such as the Bridges Maternal Child Health Network, the WeCAN Coalitiion, Neighbor to Neighbor, and the Alliance for Children and Families is changing the way nonprofits provide direct services in Orange County.

While we have these and many other accomplishments to celebrate, we choose to place our focus on the next two generations—the years in which we will work together to end child abuse in Orange County. We cannot reach our goal without you. We are all part of the fight against child abuse, and we thank you for helping us break the cycle of abuse for the kids who need us most.

Sincerely,

Scott TrotterExecutive Director

Message From the Board ChairI am proud to be involved with the Child Abuse Prevention Center as we celebrate our 33rd year of preventing child abuse in Orange County. While we continue in our mission of breaking the generational cycle of abuse, we also continue to strengthen the quality and impact of our services to those in crisis. With more than 46,000 instances of child abuse in our community each year, the preventative services we offer to families are increasingly in demand. Now, more than ever, we must continue to impact the lives of children in need and advocate for the prevention of child abuse.

As Board Chair for the 2015-2016 fiscal year, I had the great fortune of witnessing the impact of our in-home and outreach-based prevention services on the community. There are countless stories of families whose lives have been changed and whose hope has been renewed as they build a better life for their children. These stories of hope—including the stories that you will see on the pages of this report—are only possible with the help of a caring community that shares our vision of eliminating child abuse.

Your continued investment in our mission allows our organization to be in a strong position of growth and advocacy. With 90 cents of every dollar going directly to our programs, your investment is the catalyst for powerful change in our families’—and children’s—lives. Thank you for your support and for joining us in giving Orange County’s children a bright future.

Sincerely,

Athena WongBoard Chair2015-2016 Fiscal Year

Success Story – Infant Program

Angie* enrolled in the Infant program

because she was concerned about the development of her eleven month old son Rudy*. Rather than crawling on his hands and legs, Rudy would drag himself on the ground with his hands. Angie was concerned that Rudy would not be able to walk by the time he turned one.

Our caseworker Sandy* came to Angie’s home and taught her about child development. In addition to parent education, Sandy was able to give Angie tips for encouraging Rudy to walk and explore. With the help of the Infant program curriculum, Angie became more knowledgeable about the different developmental stages and began engaging in activities that would help Rudy walk. After four weeks of working with Sandy and the Infant program, Rudy began to pull himself up on his own and crawl. Now, Rudy will be turning one soon and is enjoying beginning to walk with the help of his mother.

Mission The Child Abuse Prevention Center directly serves at-risk children and families in crisis to prevent and break the generational cycle of child abuse.

Values We value every child’s right to grow up in a safe and nurturing home environment.

At A Glance The Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center is the largest nonprofit organization in Orange County focused solely on the prevention of child abuse. We are an organization of 135 staff members, 800 volunteers, and 14 programs—all of which have a well-documented record of strengthening parent-child relationships and preventing abuse before it occurs.

Our programs bring parent education, mental health and counseling, and family support services directly to families at risk of child abuse and neglect. The single most distinguishing feature of our services is the emphasis on intensive in-home parent education and care. Our service model is based on research by the U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect that endorses in-home support as the most effective approach to successfully preventing child maltreatment. Prevention-focused services are proven to save our community $5.70 to $20 for every prevention dollar spent.

Collaborative Spotlight

UnMasking Child MolestersIn the past year, Mindy Uranga’s dream of fighting child abuse came to fruition.

Working under CAPC’s umbrella, Mindy was able to launch her own standalone non-profit aimed at teaching parents about the presence of child molesters. UnMasking Child Molesters provides seminars to groups like PTAs, shelter moms, and church groups about risks faced by children and what parents can do about them.

Alliance for Children and FamiliesThe Child Abuse Prevention Center is a founding member of the Alliance for Children and Families. This new organization aims to be a strategic leader in bringing Orange County’s nonprofits together to more effectively collaborate for the benefit of the children facing dire need in our community.

Bridges for Newborns(Infant/Toddler Program)

A partnership between community hospitals and providers like MOMS Orange County, this collaborative brings in-home support to new moms in high-risk situations.

Success Story – Well Program

Summer,* a single mom from Coto de

Caza, grew concerned when her 10-year-old son Ryan began to consistently wet the bed at night. She first noticed the problem when Ryan, whose father had full custody, stayed with her for the summer. Summer connected with a Mental Health Educator in our Well program, who linked Ryan to free psychiatric counseling at the Prevention Center with a pro bono psychiatrist, Dr. Stevens.

After two sessions with Dr. Stevens, Ryan confessed that he suffered through years of mental, verbal and physical abuse at the hands of his father. In addition to kicking and slapping him, Ryan’s father dressed him in clothes that were two sizes too small. As a result of enduring years of abuse, Ryan became defiant and angry with those around him, often getting into fights at school.

After Ryan’s visits with Dr. Stevens, Summer took action to gain full custody of her son. She also enrolled in parenting classes through our new Parent to Parent program to improve her parenting skills. While Ryan still has a long road ahead of him to recover from the trauma of abuse, he is now keeping dry throughout the night and able to talk more openly with those around him. With the help of a caring mom and our Well program, Ryan has a much brighter future.

“Teach” programs provided vital education to over 5,818 people.

“Reach” programs provided outreach and support to over 8,557 people.

The 2015-2016 fiscal year brought a record number of people together to rally around our cause. From dedicated volunteers and heartfelt advocates to special events that were a smashing success, we created awareness for our mission in exciting new ways that will lead the fight for child abuse prevention for years to come.

Under the leadership of dedicated volunteer committees, our fundraising events soared to new heights in fiscal year 2016.

Champions of Children

Bill and Bonnie Barrington are a significant and consistent force of good in the Newport Beach area, and have been for the past 40 years. Bill served as CAPC’s Board President during our very formative years, and has continued to serve by volunteering at summer picnics, adopting families, leading fundraising committees, and mentoring our staff. Few people have the breadth of positive influence that Bill has had. He typifies the ultimate volunteer and servant of our cause. For this reason, we acknowledge him as our Champion of Children Lifetime Legacy honoree.

Nithin Jilla is a young passionate educator, adventurer and social entrepreneur. His journey started in high school when he co-led Kenya Dream, an organization dedicated to supporting students in Kenya with scholarships and enhancing the quality of education, and continues onto AppJam+, a STEM education program which teaches underserved and low-income middle school kids how to make mobile apps and exposes them to careers in STEM fields. Nithin’s commitment to empowering the next generation of innovators in our community is why we are recognizing him as our Champion of Children.

Mark Thompson, star of “Mark In The Morning” on 100.3 The Sound, Los Angeles’ #1 FM rock station, has been working in radio for 45 years and hosting morning radio for 35 years. Mark’s greatest achievement—and top priority—is his close knit family, regularly appearing at public events together. His youngest daughter, Katie, is following directly in her dad’s footsteps as a regular contributor to Mark’s radio program, billed as his “Chick on the Street.” Mark’s exemplary dedication to being a great father has earned him our Champion of Children award.

To kick off our fiscal year, we had our annual Charity Golf Classic at the El Niguel Country Club in August, followed by our diamond-themed Bright Futures Celebration at the beautiful St. Regis Resort in Dana Point. Our Not So Serious Golf Outing ended the year in May with a hot air balloon themed Up, Up and Away with Child Abuse at the Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton.

Festival of Children invited us to be part of their annual Carousel of Possible Dreams in November. Our ten volunteer “riders” were able to raise over $20,000 while on King Arthur’s Carrousel at the Disneyland Resort. Our partnership with Ragnar Relay So Cal was also a huge success—all 7,000 runners stopped by Prevention Village at Exchange Six to learn about and celebrate our cause.

The 2015 holiday season brought 206 donors together to provide clothing, basic necessities, and gifts to 312 of our neediest families. Over 1,300 people received desperately needed items for the holidays, including 26 families adopted by the LA Kings who enjoyed a day of ice skating, family fun, and a post-game meet and greet with the players. The connections our families made with the “Santas” who adopted them created stability, hope, and positive change for a brighter future.

SAVE A CHILD$1,000,000 can save a child in need. Bringing help at the early

stages of a child’s development is our best chance to break a cycle of abuse. Help change in a child’s life through your support.

Last year, in Orange County, 46,000 reports of abuse were made. Protecting children from violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect is essential for our children and community. When children are protected, their health, education and well-being contribute to a thriving society. Your financial contributions can make a huge difference.

• Provide critical screenings for ADHD, developmental delays, and early mental health challenges

• Bring medical care to an isolated child by supporting in-home nurse visits

• Reach teens to prevent dating violence and pregnancy

*from kidsdata.org9

Page 11: to see our FY16 Annual Report!

BUILD A FAMILY$1,000,000 can help bring a family together. The Child Abuse Prevention Center aims to bring positive parenting into the

home to create a bright future for the children.

At-risk families typically face mental health challenges, substance abuse, and histories of family violence that limit their potential to be great parents. Help us to continue to build strong families – one family at a time.

• Provide a prevention-focused outreach to at-risk families

• Bring basic needs items and home safety items to an unstable home

• Reach isolated families who need a trusted coach to get them connected to help

10

Page 12: to see our FY16 Annual Report!

BUILD GREAT STAFF LEGACY$1,000,000 can provide our staff with the training and tools they need to help our

clients. People are at the core of our cause and the better equipped they are to lead, serve and support, the more effectively our children’s lives will be improved.

Our team has been successful because it retains our best staff, and trains them to be better. But the needs of children far exceed our current capacity. To continue to grow our staff into strong leaders, we must invest in their knowledge of child abuse prevention. Your financial contribution will create a strong staff legacy.

• Provide quality training for our management to give them the tools they need to lead and empower their team

• Create a tuition fund for higher education reimbursement to advance our staff

• Upgraded technology will allow our staff, interns, and core volunteers to connect and develop skills relevant to the new economy

11

Page 13: to see our FY16 Annual Report!

ENGAGE VOLUNTEERS$1,000,000 can engage our community in support of one another

and our children. Ultimately, the greatest form of prevention comes from neighboring families caring for families in need.

So many families practice great parenting, and yet so little of that knowledge and experience is shared with struggling families. Your financial support can help us link great volunteer families, interns and community members to families in need.

• Allow us to give better shape and structure to the valuable work that volunteer families do for our mission

• Create internships and practical applications of university knowledge that will bring talent and passion to the problem of child abuse

12

Page 14: to see our FY16 Annual Report!

LAUNCH NEW SERVICES$1,000,000 can help fund new services that connect with the unmet needs

of at-risk families. With new programs, we can reach more families and advance our fight against the generational cycle of child abuse.

So many families are isolated by their situations—poverty, depression, violence, and substance dependencies—yet can be reached with innovative use of volunteers, information and outreach practices. Donor support makes it possible to launch new programs that respond to families in crisis.

• Bring neighborhood-focused workshops to reduce isolation

• Create a sustained connection to an at-risk child all the way through their first five years

• Provide long-term, on-going mentorship to families isolated by abuse

• Connect working professionals and retirees with at-risk teens through a “letters” program

• Give life to services using new media, such as professional help through teleconference

13

Page 15: to see our FY16 Annual Report!

END CHILD ABUSE BY 2050$1,000,000 can help break the cycle of abuse within two generations. By focusing

intensely on this generation’s challenges and the gap between what is knownand what is practiced, we can realize a significant change in our families.

What seem like lofty goals become achievable when a group of committed leaders bring focus, intensity and resources to take on a challenge. Edison led us to the lightbulb. JFK lead us to the moon. It’s time to bring our vision back down to earth and to our most vital resource:

our children.

“I learned that behavior is [affected] not just by environment but it’s also genetic. That really helped me understand [my son]. I learned how to be more patient and more understanding.”

“I learned a lot and my [case]worker was great. She coached me throughout the program and motivated me. She gave me hope when I thought I couldn’t do anything to manage my child’s behavior. Thank you.”

“Being [part of a] program, I have learned how to dedicate my time to each of my children. My children are very different from each other and I have learned how to negotiate and communicate with them both. Being in the program was great.”

“I learned a lot being in the program. I have learned to better observe my kids. I know what to do when they don’t want to share and how to negotiate with them. I have also learned to be more consistent with them.”
