October 26, 2018 Principal’s Message -Mrs. Lenn Wow!!! It’s hard to believe that Halloween is almost here. Here are a few things you need to know regarding next week: Students may wear their Halloween costume over their clothes on October 31. Toy knives, guns, or weapons are not allowed. No masks, please. If students do not want to wear a costume, they may wear jeans and a Halloween shirt or their uniform. We are planning our Halloween costume parade, which will begin right after prayer. Students will be parading through the classrooms first, and then the parade will move outside (weather permitting- Parish Hall is our back up plan). Parents are invited to wait outside on the sidewalk to take pictures. The students will exit the building at the main doors near the office and proceed down the sidewalk to the end doors near the playground, where they will re-enter the building. Classes can pose for a class picture on the playground before heading back into the building. ALL SCHOOL MASS WILL NOT TAKE PLACE ON HALLOWEEN. INSTEAD, WE WILL ATTEND MASS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1 for the Feast of All Saints. Remember that November 1 is also a half day, with dismissal at 11:30, so there will be no afternoon latch key or bus service.

Auction tickets are running out!!! There are less than 15 left. They are available in the office for $40, which includes dinner, dessert, and open bar. Be sure to get your tickets before they are sold out!

Parent-teacher Conferences are next week on Thursday. The sign up genius link for parents to sign up for conferences was sent out on Tuesday morning. If you have not yet signed up, please do so right away by clicking here. Here are a few tips for productive conferences: Please prepare ahead of time. Since your time is limited to 10-15 minutes, make sure you know what you’d like to discuss with the teacher. It is helpful to make a small list and bring it to the conference. Teachers will be setting a timer, since they have a tight schedule to keep, so if you need to schedule another appointment to continue a discussion, please do so. If you are scheduled for an evening conference, please be aware that there is a 5:30 mass at the church that evening. The book fair will be set up for browsing during conferences. Students will visit the book fair during the following week, and it will be open every day Nov 5-9 from 9-3:30. Today was the final day of the first quarter; therefore, students start fresh on Monday.

It’s been a busy week! On Monday, our 8th grade class headed to Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School for “Shadow Day”. Students were paired with a CMC student ambassador to serve as their guide for the day. They had an opportunity to attend various classes, including biology, art, music, theater, P.E., math, and mock trial. They enjoyed lunch in the student lounge. It was a great day to learn about all that Cardinal Mooney has to offer.

This week our Tuesday Preschool friends and classes TK-5 enjoyed a fire safety presentation from the Richmond Fire Department. Some of the topics discussed with students were: what to do if you are sleeping and hear the smoke alarm, the importance of having a family meeting place, and how to stop, drop, cover your face, and roll in the case of a clothing fire. The firemen also showed students what they look like in full gear, so that students know not to be afraid of them. The highlight for many students was undoubtedly the fire truck! There are a few pictures included at the end of the Weekly for you to enjoy.

On Wednesday our 5th grade class went to General Dynamics Land Systems for a STEM tour. General Dynamics designs, engineers, and produces tracked and wheeled military vehicles. Students learned about tanks and various armored vehicles. They had an opportunity to use virtual reality to

experience the view from inside a tank. It was a great learning experience and they represented our school well!

On Thursday the middle school classes visited Blake’s Big Apple for a few hours. They enjoyed apple cider and doughnuts, explored a corn maze, and picked apples. It was a beautiful day for a visit to the orchard.

Today we had our October SASS card drawing. Ten names were drawn. Our SASS winners for October are: Lorenzo Giannone, Stella Grace, Christian Zyble, Cameron Cattivera, Daniel Redlawski, Alaina Raper, Giselle Graebert, Adam Dobrasko, Olivia Glynn, and Maximus Greenia (not pictured). Each got a Tiny Saint and a gatorade. Great job, Saints!

Here are a few easy ways to help our school: Clip and collect Box Tops for Education!

Information was sent home this week regarding box tops. There will be a collection container near the office for students to drop their box tops. Each box top earns our school 10 cents. If you use a collection sheet (one of these was sent home this week), each sheet with box tops attached is worth $1-$2, depending on the number of box tops. It is a great program, and is an easy way to support the school. Another way to support the school is to use Shoparoo Fundraising. First, search for Shoparoo in the App store, and download it to your phone. Then, search for St. Augustine Catholic

School. Next, take pictures of store receipts, and submit them to help earn money for our school. Both Box Tops and Shoparoo are easy ways to support your child’s school!

The girl’s basketball teams are starting to practice. The Varsity girls will practice tomorrow at Holy Family from 12:30-2:00. The JV girls will practice on Monday and Tuesday from 3:30-5 at St. Peter’s Gym. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Kauffman.

Mark your calendar! Our Advent Program has been scheduled for December 19 at 7:00 pm at the Richmond High School Auditorium. The students will present “Christmas in Reverse”. They have been learning and practicing the songs in music class, and students have auditioned for both singing and acting parts. Students are spending the majority of their time in music class preparing for this performance, so all children are expected to be there. They will need to arrive before the performance, around 6:30 or so. More details and information about tickets will be coming soon. If you know you have a schedule conflict with this date, and you know that your child will not be attending, please notify Miss Mantey by sending a note to school with your child right away.

This Sunday is Priesthood Sunday. It’s a day to express appreciation for our priests. Student Council officers have led the school in prayer for priests each day this week. All of the students made a bouquet of “hands” for Father Joe and Father John. Each student traced their hand and wrote a message of gratitude and appreciation for each of our priests. We presented them this morning.

The Library is highlighting eighth grader Maximus Greenia and some of his favorite books through the years. They’ve been on display for others to view and check out for reading! Keep posted for the next eighth grade student in the Library Spotlight!
