Principal’s Message School Resumes for Students on January 4th: Welcome back!!! School will resume for all students on Wednesday, January 4, at 7:50 a.m. We will look forward to seeing everyone back in 2017! Report Cards: Second quarter report cards will be sent home with students on January 6th. We will send a

ParentLink message reminding you to look for your student’s report card. Please take time to review your child’s report card and set goals for the second semester. Middle school matters! Eligibility to play sports and participate in activities such as cheerleading, dance team, NAL, etc… is determined by the previous semester’s grades. This is especially im-portant for 8th graders to remember as they prepare to transition to high school! 6th Grade Family Night: The 6th Grade Sizzlin’ Sixlets team will be hosting Family Night on Thursday, January 12, at Rob-inson beginning at 6:00 p.m. Join us for an evening of fun and learning! PTSO, Site Council, and Foundation: PTSO, Site Council, and Foundation do not have scheduled meetings for January…enjoy the break! Our next meeting will be a combined meeting on Monday, February 13, at 6:00 in the Robinson cafete-ria. Please join us! Conferences: Winter conferences will be held on February 7th, 9th, and 10th. You will be receiving a preference sheet from your child’s conference teacher this month to choose conference dates and times. Please be on the lookout for that sheet! Robinson Middle School participates in a recycling program. The program helps Youth Sports here in Wichita. Rob-

inson has been so successful with our program we won $200 for our Science Department! You are welcome to help

us out The recycle poly carts are red and green; located on the south side of the courtyard off Bleckley under the

windows beyond the ramp. Cardboard only in the green recycle bin in the NE corner of the south parking lot.

We can collect:

Sizzlin’ Sixlets Math—The students have done an amazing job with our last unit on Rational Numbers. Students reviewed placing ra-tional numbers on a number line, comparing and ordering, and converting to various forms. The students have current-ly stated their unit on Fraction Computation. Students will start with reviewing multiplication of fractions including mixed numbers. Next, they will learn a new 6th grade standard which is fraction division. Students will continue this unit after the break with addition and subtraction of mixed numbers with regrouping. In Enrichment the students have been faced with some very challenging problems. Students have done a great job of applying past concepts to new skills. Everyone has earned a restful break and should keep up the great work!

Social Studies—We will be exploring ancient Egypt. Kids will be learning TONS of Egyptian facts and uncovering many hidden secrets of this ancient civilization such as mummifica-tion to pharaohs. Also, students will have fun with hieroglyphs. They will get the oppor-tunity to create their own hieroglyphic key (A-Z) and then write a personal letter using their own hieroglyphic alphabet.

Language Arts—Welcome Back! We’re ready to start our New Year off in in Language Arts, with a new unit called, “Success!” Students will be chal-lenged to think about different measures of success and what it means to be successful. They will also identify the role that cause and effect has on attaining success and then use evidence from the text to support their thinking. We will have the 25 Book Campaign Celebration on January 13th. Students must have read 12 books to participate! Keep Reading!

Robinson Foundation for Educational Excellence

BLEACHER BUCKS Fundraising Campaign Continues! To help provide for the addition of the schools’ new gymnasium and auditorium, the Robinson Foundation for Educa-tional Excellence has launched its largest fundraising campaign to raise $25,000 for bleachers. As of December 15, gifts given total $750.00. Every gift helps us get closer to our $25,000 goal, and every gift shows that We Believe in the fu-ture of Robinson Middle School! Thank you for your generosity (and thank you if we've crossed in the mail school was out so early in December)! As the Foundation Board strives to raise funds for new bleachers, we are still committed to providing funds to enhance learning in the classrooms. In December, the Foundation Board allocated funds to purchase 30 subscriptions to Grades 6-9 of Scholastic Math. One of the benefits of having Scholastic Math is that it gives students an opportunity to apply math to real world situations and see how math is important outside of the classroom. This adds value on to what stu-dents are learning. THANKS TO THESE FAMILIES who have committed to the foundations fundraising efforts for the 2016-2017 school year!! BLEACHER BUCKS IS A FUNDRAISER dedicated to purchasing new bleachers for Robinson Middle School gymnasi-

um/FEMA shelter. You may donate any dollar amount; no contribution is too small. Our goal is to raise $25,000 in

order to have bleachers in the new space.

As Robinson Middle School continues to develop its athletic environment, the bleachers play a key role in providing

needed seating for games, activities and assemblies. This aids in the future success of our school. The fundraiser is a

collaboration of community citizens and Robinson Middle School. All funds will be raised through donations and

grants.

Math Intervention Classes Students will be finishing up their current units in January. All Tier 2 and Tier 3 students will take the I Ready Diag-nostic for the 2nd time after January 16th. Intervention groupings may change at that time after reviewing students’ scores. Please continue to have your child work on math facts. Sixth grade students have learned some games to practice math skills with a deck of cards, so ask them to show you how to play one of the games. For January, we will be studying the concept of We Need Change. We will be learning about Compromise; (1) Conflict and War;(2) The American Revolu-tion; (3) The Civil War; (4) World War I; (5) Keeping the Peace; and (6) The War on Terror. The Life Skills lessons will include: (1) Conflict Decision Tree; (2) A Classroom Flag; (3) Change the World; (4) My Education Needs; (5) Keeping the Peace and (6) In Case of Emergency. The Science Experiment for the month is We Need Water and the Time Line activity is Conflict and Com-promise Created our Country. We will also discuss why we need rules. Technology Class First Semesters Technology class race cars! These cars were designed in an auto cad program and then cut out of a block of wood on a scroll saw. Students had to drill the axel holes out with the drill press. After that, they had to hand sand it to meet Mr. Burrell’s specs! They did a fantastic job! The girls showed the boys how to do it this year!

Elizabeth Snyder took first place for speed.
